Congress&rsquo; UP-incharge is on a visit to do the spadework for the Assembly elections in the state next year. She has held several meetings with party functionaries and leaders. She will also meet former MPs, ex-MLAs, heads of frontal organisations, departments, members of zila panchayats and block heads.
She also met two Samajwadi Party workers who were allegedly attacked by BJP activists during the panchayat polls. Calling it a &lsquo;fight for democracy&rsquo;, the Congress General Secretary has demanded that the election held be cancelled and at all those places where there were incidents of violence, re-polling be held.

In a first major dissent in the archipelago in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep residents are on a 12-hour hunger strike on Monday to protest against three proposed rules governing tourism, cattle and panchayat elections. The Save Lakshadweep Forum, a body floated to channelise mounting protests against the rules, said local residents will fast in their homes and all shops and establishments, except emergency services, will stay closed from 6am to 6pm during the first major protest. The locals fear the new rules will destroy the unique culture and tradition of the island. The forum alleged that though they were assured repeatedly that local sentiments will be heard and addressed, the administrator, Praful&nbsp;Patel 'is going ahead with his partisan and retrograde decisions&rsquo;
