Buried diamonds at under-construction dam in Madhya Pradesh? People rush to dig after viral claims

The 'diamond rush' erupted after claims of a contractor finding 'diamond gravel' in the area, according to a news report.

A 'diamond rush' is gripping Madhya Pradesh&rsquo;s Panna district with hundreds of people reportedly digging the soil near an under-construction dam to look for gems.
People thronged the dam site after a viral claim that a contractor had found 'diamond gravel' in the area, according to a Hindustan Times report.
Officials say that anybody can dig a pit of up to 2.5 feet near the dam because the land belongs to the state&rsquo;s water resources department.
Meanwhile, police were worried about potential law-and-order problems due to a huge influx of people, even from neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh. Police said hundreds of people had reached the Vishramganj dam site with digging equipment.

As many as 15 diamonds were mined by people in the last two days in the shallow mines of Panna in Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh, an official said on Friday.
The stones collectively weigh a total of 35.86 carat and will fetch around Rs 1 crore during the official auction, he said.
Prakash Majumdar, a labourer, found a diamond weighing 3.64 carat at Jaruapar mines on Wednesday, mining department inspector Anupam Singh said.
Similarly, Kallu Sonkar extracted a 6.81 carat diamond, Rajesh Jain 2.28 carats, Rahul Agrawal 4.32 carats and Rajabai Raikwar 1.77 carat stones from the mines in Krishnakalyanpur Pati, he said.
At least 10 diamonds of varying weights were extracted from the shallow mines of Krishnakalyanpur Pati on Thursday, the official said.
Dukman Ahirwar became the luckiest miner, as he found six diamonds weighing about 2.46 carats, he said.
Similarly, Ashok Khare extracted two diamonds of 6.37 carats, while Jagan Jadia found a stone weighing 4.74 carats and Lakhan Kevat 3.47 carats, the official said.
The precious stones were deposited with the Diamond Office and will be auctioned from October 18 onwards, he said.
The raw diamonds will be auctioned and the proceeds after deduction of the government royalty and taxes will go to the people who found the stones, the official said.

The farmer, Prakash Majumdar, found this diamond from a mine in Jaruapur village in the district on Friday, officials said.
Officials said that the raw diamond would be auctioned and the proceeds would be given to the farmer after deduction of government royalty and taxes.
As per the private estimates, the 6.47 carat diamond is likely to fetch around ₹ 30 lakh in the auction.
Majumdar said that he will share the amount received from the auction with his four partners engaged in quarrying the mine.
He said that he had found a 7.44 carat diamond last year. Besides, he had also mined four other precious stones weighing 2 to 2.5 carat in the past two years.
Panna district is estimated to have diamond reserves of 12 lakh carats. The state government gives small patches of land on lease in Panna diamond reserve area to local farmers and labourers to mine diamonds and deposit them with the district mining officer.
