The death of a loved one is never easy news to process. Whether we are dealing with adults or children, the pain and grief cannot be substantiated based on age. However, unlike adults, children are yet to learn about the concept of loss and absorb the ramifications of the same.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Perhaps this is why it is more complicated for parents to talk to children about death and grief.&nbsp;However, there are ways that you can ease the conversation without sabotaging the truth.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Take it slowly&nbsp;
Children need to understand the concept of death. Therefore, take a step-by-step approach to explaining how the situation works. It is important that parents also pause while speaking to their child, allowing the child the time to understand the situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Do not shield your child from the truth&nbsp;
For children, understanding that they might never see the people they are with is not easy. However, it is important that they understand the point of no return that comes with death. Tell them the truth, answer whatever questions they might have, and ensure that they are very clear about the passing of a loved one.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Do not engage in euphemisms&nbsp;
Instead of telling them directly, engaging in death euphemisms might confuse the child. As a replacement for saying, &ldquo;your loved one has gone to a special place&rdquo;, empathetically say, &ldquo;we have sad news but your loved one has died&rdquo;. Answer questions they might have.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Keep your emotions in check&nbsp;
It is difficult to be the bearer of bad news, especially if they were your loved ones as well. Watching their parents accept death and deal with it slowly will help the child accept the passing of their loved ones as well. However, it is also all right to be vulnerable and display sadness in front of your child as that will help her be more empathetic and understand her emotions well.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Death is a course of life and ensuring that your child understands it in a healthy way is the best way to teach them about the concept of loss.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The rise of the pink and blue gender myth
Around the turn of the 20th century, toys were rarely marketed to different genders. By the 1940s, manufacturers quickly caught on to the idea that wealthier families would buy an entirely new set of clothing, toys and other gadgets if the products were marketed differently for both genders. And so the idea of pink for girls and blue for boys was born.
Today, gendered toy marketing is stark. Walk down any toy aisle and you can clearly see who the audience is. The girl aisle is almost exclusively pink, showcasing mostly Barbie dolls, kitchen sets and princesses. Conversely, the boy aisle is mostly blue and features trucks and superheroes. Toys marketed to boys tend to be more aggressive and involve action and excitement. Girl toys, on the other hand, are usually pink and passive, laying more emphasis on beauty and nurturing.
Why can&rsquo;t boys play with barbies and girls play with fire trucks?
This is a question for the toy industry where clich&eacute;d views have become the norm. From the moment a child is born, friends and family innocently buy gendered baby products.
But do kids really want their toys dictated by gender norms? There is no such thing as boy stuff and girl stuff. Toys don&rsquo;t have a gender and let&rsquo;s not assign them one. The idea is to encourage children to pursue their interests, without being burdened by societal expectations based on gender. Gendered toys can be harmful to children in the long run, limiting their growth &amp; career choices and discouraging them from trying out different things.
Moving beyond pink and blue: A gender-neutral environment
Our views and opinions on what children should and shouldn&rsquo;t play with are a product of hidden social rules many of us feel should be followed. But it&rsquo;s time we were made to see that toys should be universal.
The good news is that many have started to move away from this ideology by making simple changes. California became the first state in the U.S. to require large retailers to display toys and childcare items in gender-neutral ways.
Similarly, a campaign group in the U.K. &lsquo;Let Toys Be Toys' has been lobbying the toy industries to stop limiting children&rsquo;s interests along gender lines.
Apart from that, many organisations including Lego are working towards bringing about the change. Lego has also announced that it will work to remove gender stereotypes from its toys after a global survey. While Lego has vowed to end gender disparity in its toys by 2022, another organisation, Mattel, launched a line of gender-inclusive dolls for kids in September 2019.
Creating a gender&nbsp;neutral play space
Times are changing, but are we ready to let go of our gendered lens? There&rsquo;s more to gender equality than allowing girls to study and boys to choose feminine pursuits like baking. Perhaps, taking away the lens of gender from parenting will pave the way for a more equal world, where young boys won&rsquo;t be ridiculed for wanting to be a princess.

New research shows that using Instagram or Snapchat before the age of 11 is heavily associated with more problematic digital behaviours.&nbsp;

According to new research, using Instagram or Snapchat before the age of 11 is linked to more problematic digital behaviours compared to those who join these platforms at an older age. The study published in Computers in Human Behaviour also found that parental restrictions on phone use and checking social media improved some of the negative effects.

Researchers surveyed around 1,000 middle schoolers in the northeast U.S. regarding social media use, digital behaviours and parental restrictions on phone usage. During the study, the team found that early adolescents engaged in more negative digital behaviours such as online bullying or harassment.
As per the findings, the minimum age to use social media should be at least 13 years. Children and teens may also benefit from a strategy that involves tracking and limiting the use of social media and setting rules about screen time, researchers concluded.

An international expert panel led by University College London&nbsp;looked at 69 studies worldwide that followed children over time and analysed data on physical punishment, like slapping or smacking, and a range of different outcomes.

All&nbsp;the studies confirmed&nbsp;that physical punishment&nbsp;is ineffective and harmful and has no benefits for children and their families. In fact, it may even lead to&nbsp;behavioural problems such as aggression and antisocial behaviour, finds the team.&nbsp;Moreover,&nbsp;these detrimental outcomes from physical punishment occurred irrespective of the child&rsquo;s sex, ethnicity, or the overall parenting styles of the caregivers.&nbsp;
The team also noted that even today, 63 per cent of children between the ages of two and four, approximately 250 million children globally, are regularly subjected to physical punishment by their caregivers.&nbsp;
As per UNICEF data,&nbsp;children living in 73 countries do not have legal protection from this form of violence while at school, including India where corporal punishment is only partially&nbsp;prohibited.&nbsp;
