Just hours ahead of the Paris Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on the 26th of July, parts of its high-speed rail network were left paralysed, affecting more than 800,000 passengers.&nbsp;
Then on the 28th of July, France's telecoms network suffered isolated outages, affecting mobile and internet services.
Though it might be perceived as mere isolated incidents, there was every intention to create chaos and anarchy ahead of the marquee event.&nbsp;
While France has largely been targeted by Islamist extremists in the past, the senior authorities believe that this time, the far-left extremists might have been behind these incidents.
Four days after the attack, France&rsquo;s interior minister G&eacute;rald Darmanin suggested that members of far-left or ultra-left groups were behind the sabotage of the high-speed rail network last week.&nbsp;
"The attacks were deliberate, very precise, extremely well-targeted...This is the traditional type of action of the ultra-left," Darmanin told France 2 TV.&nbsp;
With regards to the telecom outage, a police source involved in the probe told Reuters news agency that it "was too soon to tell" if there was a link with acts of vandalism.
So far, there has been no public claim of responsibility but several media outlets received messages in support of the attacks on the 27th of July.
Several media outlets reported on the 29th of July that a far-left activist had been arrested in Normandy.
The suspect was said to have had keys to the railway authority premises, cutting pliers, and a set of universal keys in his vehicle, as well as &ldquo;literature related to the far left&rdquo;.
Security services have been increasingly concerned about far-left or anarchist groups, which typically oppose the state and capitalism.
The concerns expressed by security services have also been well documented. &nbsp;According to a European Commission report, there has been a rise in left-wing extremism and anarchist attacks across the European Union since 2006. &nbsp;
Till 2020, there have been more than 400 reported incidents of left-wing attacks. &nbsp;
While Germany, Italy, Spain, and Greece have been the worst victims of left extremism, of late, France has also been seeing an uptick in such cases.&nbsp;
A 2023 report by European police agency Europol has described left-wing and anarchist extremists as those who take advantage of lawful demonstrations to launch violent attacks against governmental property and law enforcement.&nbsp;
These groups typically attach "critical infrastructure, such as repeaters and antennas, government institutions and private companies" with their "most common modus operandi" being arson and explosive devices.
In response to these incidents, the French authorities have further tightened security. Interior Minister Darmanin said that 50 drones, 250 rail security agents, and 1,000 maintenance workers have been deployed to tighten security along the 28,000-kilometer high-speed train network.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took a long-awaited swim in the murky waters of the Seine on Wednesday amid joy and relief that the river is finally clean enough for outdoor Olympic swimming events later this month.
Wearing goggles and a wet suit, the 65-year-old city leader swam breaststroke under bright sunshine before immersing her face and switching to front crawl, covering around 100 metres (yards) downstream.
"It's wonderful, very, very pleasant," Hidalgo told reporters of the greenish water. "It's fresh but not cold."
She was joined by senior local officials and chief organiser of the Paris Games, Tony Estanguet, a gold medal-winning canoeist who has been sweating on the state of the Seine ahead of the opening ceremony next week.
"Today is a confirmation that we are exactly where we are meant to be," Estanguet said. "We are now ready to organise the Games in the Seine."
The swimming leg of the Olympics triathlon is set to take place in its waters on July 30-31 and August 5, followed by the open-water swimming on August 8-9.
Despite an investment of 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) to prevent sewage leaks into the waterway, the river had been continually failing water quality tests until the start of this month.
Wednesday's dip in front of more than 150 journalists was intended to demonstrate that the river was ready, but also to underline what is meant to be one of the key legacy achievements of Paris 2024.
Hidalgo plans to create three public bathing areas in the Seine for the city's residents next year -- a century after swimming was banned -- while fish and other organisms are also returning to the waterway in greater numbers.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, French police said they had arrested an 18-year-old suspected far-right extremist in the east of the country after he made threats against the Games in a Telegram group.
Security forces are on their highest alert ahead of the Games, with an alleged plot by a teenage Chechan to attack an Olympic football match thwarted in May.
Hidalgo had originally planned to swim last month, but had to delay because water tests showed that E.Coli bacteria -- a key indicator of faecal matter -- were sometimes up to 10 times higher than authorised limits.
Her swim had sparked jokes and memes on social media, with one viral AI-generated image showing her looking like the wrinkled Gollum character from the "Lord of the Rings" movies after emerging from the water.
A short-lived protest group posting under the hashtag #jechiedanslaSeine (#IshitintheSeine) had also encouraged people to empty their bowels in the river upstream.
President Emmanuel Macron, who had promised to join the Seine bathers, was a notable absentee on Wednesday as he is occupied by a political crisis caused by his decision to call snap parliamentary elections last month.
The locations chosen for outdoor swimming at the Olympics have caused difficulties in the past, notably ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and those in Tokyo in 2021.
French authorities have invested in new water treatment and storage facilities in and around Paris, as well as ensuring that thousands of homes and canal boats without waste water connections are linked up to the sewerage system.
"If it hadn't been for the Games and Tony Estanguet, we wouldn't have been able to do all this work, because the Games were an accelerator," Hidalgo explained.
Marc Valmassoni from campaign group Surfrider said cleaning up urban rivers was essential for the future when higher temperatures due to global warming mean city-dwellers will need swimming areas to cool off in.
"If the water courses are unsafe, it will put them in danger," he told AFP.
Major storms still overwhelm the Paris underground waste-water network, leading to emergency discharges of untreated sewage into the Seine.
The Olympic events remain weather-dependent and heavy rain on the eve of the triathlon or open-water swimming could lead to problems.
In the worst-case scenario, the swimming for the triathlon would be cancelled, while the open-water swimming could be moved from the Seine to a water course east of Paris.
Heavy rain in May and June have also disrupted preparations for the Seine-based opening ceremony, during which thousands of athletes are set to sail down the river.
Organisers have had to postpone rehearsals repeatedly because of the strength of the currents.
The Seine's flow is currently around 400 m3/second -- many times above the usual level for this time of year of around 100-150 m3/s.

Paris which is also known as the city of light is facing a pooping problem ahead of Olympics. Paris's river Seine is going to play a crucial role in the Summer Olympics as the triathlon-race, which consists of a 1500m swim will take place in this very river.&nbsp;
River Seine is still not safe for swimming on most days due to high levels of E. Coli bacteria in the water, potentially exposing athletes to serious health risks. Notably, swimming in Seine has been illegal for more than 100 years due to the river's pollution levels.&nbsp;
But, what is contributing to Seine's river pollution? Well, one of the major factor is sewage. Earlier, in the 80s, the sewage system in Paris used to dump the the sewage into the Seine. Later on, Paris had a combined sewer system, which is underground and operates well.&nbsp;
However, it has some flaws which can affect the Olympics as the pipes that carry sewage away from homes and businesses are the same ones used for stormwater. The system is big enough &nbsp;to effectively transport wastewater to treatment plants, where it&rsquo;s cleaned. But during heavy rains, sewage and stormwater overwhelm the system and then the excess sewage and water flows into the Seine.&nbsp;
The open water swimming, which is a part of the triathlon is set to take place on 30, 31st of July and on 5th of August. In order for this triathlon to take place in the river, water tests should be submitted no more than 48 hours prior to the competition.&nbsp;
And, in the water sample, the E. coli cannot exceed more than 1000 cfu.&nbsp;
What is E. coli?
E. coli is a bacteria that is found in intestines of people and warm-blooded animals. The presence of E. coli in a drinking water sample almost always indicates recent fecal contamination, which can make a person sick, like quite sick!
Tests of the river water that was taken four months ahead of the Olympics showed that the Seine was unsafe for the triathlon because of the E.coli levels.&nbsp;
Paris is now banking on warm, dry weather to keep the river clean. Paris' Mayor Anne Hidalgo even said that she would swim in Seine right before the Olympics, in a bid to show its suitability for the upcoming game amid the ongoing cleanliness concerns.&nbsp;

In a statement on Tuesday, DGCA said the incidents of passenger misbehaviour occurred on the AI-142 flight from Paris to New Delhi on December 6, 2022.

Aviation regulator DGCA on Tuesday imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Air India for not reporting two incidents of unruly passenger behaviour onboard a Paris-New Delhi flight in December last year.
This is the second time in less than a week that the watchdog has taken enforcement action against the airline in connection with unruly passenger behaviour.
In a statement on Tuesday, DGCA said the incidents of passenger misbehaviour occurred on the AI-142 flight from Paris to New Delhi on December 6, 2022.
One drunk passenger was caught smoking in the lavatory and not adhering to the crew instructions, and another passenger allegedly relieved himself on a vacant seat and blanket of a fellow female passenger when she went to the lavatory, it said.
"Enforcement action in the form of a financial penalty of Rs 10,00,000 has been imposed on Air India for not reporting the incident to DGCA and delaying in referring the matter to its Internal Committee, which is a violation of applicable DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements," the statement said.

A 69-year-old gunman opened fire at a Kurdish cultural centre and hairdressing salon in central Paris on Friday, killing two people and injuring four others, witnesses and prosecutors said.
The shots shortly before midday (1100 GMT) caused panic in rue d'Enghien in the trendy 10th district of the capital, a bustling area of shops, restaurants and bars that is home to a large Kurdish population.
Witnesses told AFP that the gunman, described by police as white and known for two previous attempted murders, initially targeted the Kurdish cultural centre before entering a nearby hairdressing salon where he was arrested by police.
"We saw an old white man enter then start shooting in the Kurdish cultural centre, then he went to the hairdresser's next door," Romain, who works in a nearby restaurant, told AFP by telephone.
Resident Emmanuel Boujenan told AFP: "There were people panicking, shouting to the police and pointing to the salon 'he's in there, he's in there, go in'."
He said he saw two people on the floor of the salon with leg wounds.
The Kurdish community centre, called Centre Ahmet Kaya, is used by a charity that works to integrate the Kurdish population in the Paris region.

A shopkeeper in the area told AFP on condition of anonymity that she heard seven or eight shots, saying "it was total panic. We locked ourselves inside."
The Paris prosecutor's office said an investigation had been opened and that "a man aged between 60 and 70 has been arrested and is in custody".
"His identity is in the process of being checked," it added.
