Two people have died after a small plane attempted to make an emergency landing on Interstate 75 in southwest Florida on Friday afternoon, colliding with a vehicle and bringing traffic to a halt as a massive plume of black smoke rose into the air.
The crash landing happened near the Pine Ridge Road exit in Collier County, just north of where the interstate heads east toward Fort Lauderdale along what is known as Alligator Alley.
Brianna Walker, 26, witnessed as the wing of the plane dragged the car in front of hers and slammed into the wall.
&ldquo;It's seconds that separated us from the car in front of us,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;The wing pulverized this one car.&rdquo; Walker and her friend saw the plane moments before it hit the highway, allowing her friend to pull over before the crash.
&ldquo;The plane was over our heads by inches,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It took a hard right and skid across the highway.&rdquo; Walker said an explosion of flames then burst from the plane with a loud boom. Pieces of the plane littered the highway.
&ldquo;It feels unreal like a movie,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;It was seconds between us dying.&rdquo; The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Bombardier Challenger 600 jet and said the crash happened about 3:15 p.m.
Collier County Sheriff's Office spokesman Adam Fisher confirmed two deaths, but said he didn't immediately know whether the victims had been passengers are the plane or on the ground.
According to the FlightAware aircraft tracker, the plane was operated by Hop-a-Jet Worldwide Charter based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It took off from an airport at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, at about 1:02 p.m. and was scheduled to land in Naples at 3:12 p.m. After that, the aircraft was scheduled to fly to Fort Lauderdale. Hop-a-Jet did not immediately respond to an email and phone message seeking comment.
A spokesperson for Ohio State University said the aircraft is not affiliated with the university, and they have no further information about it.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, with the NTSB leading the investigation.
The Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that the southbound lanes of the interstate were closed and advised motorists to seek alternate routes. A photo captured by the Florida Department of Transportation showed a huge plume of black smoke rising from the plane.

Eight people were injured as a Myanmar military plane crashed at the Lengpui airport on the outskirts of Aizawl on Tuesday, officials said.
The small plane had arrived to take back the Myanmarese soldiers who crossed over to India last week, following gunfights with an ethnic insurgent group, they said.
There were 14 people on the plane, including the pilot, and eight of them were injured in the accident, which happened around 10.20 am, officials said.
While landing, it overshot the tabletop runway of the Mizoram government-run airport and crashed. The impact of the accident was such that the plane split into two, they said.
The injured persons were taken to the Lengpui primary health centre for treatment, they added.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an investigation into the crash, a state government official said.
"All incoming flights have been diverted. When flight services, incoming and outgoing, will resume is yet to be known. Hoping all passengers would be able to either fly in or fly out as soon as possible, especially people with medical emergency," she said.
The airport was immediately shut after the accident, another official said.
A total of 276 Myanmarese soldiers had entered Mizoram last week, and of them, 184 were sent back on Monday, officials said.
The remaining 92 soldiers were to be repatriated on Tuesday, they said.
The plane was supposed to take them to Sittwe in Myanmar's Rakhine state.
The 276 Myanmarese soldiers entered Bandukbanga village, located at the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh trijunction, in southernmost Mizoram's Lawngtlai district with arms and ammunition on 17 January and approached the Assam Rifles.
They fled to Mizoram after their camp was overrun and captured by 'Arakan Army' fighters.
The Myanmarese soldiers were taken to the nearby Assam Rifles camp at Parva, and later the majority of them were shifted to Lunglei, the official said.
They have been under the supervision of the Assam Rifles since then, the official said.
These 276 soldiers were brought to Aizawl over Saturday and Sunday, for their transport to Myanmar from the Lengpui airport.
The group, headed by a colonel, has 36 officers and 240 lower-rank personnel, officials said.
With the 276 soldiers who entered last week, as many as 635 Myanmar soldiers have fled to Mizoram after their camps were overrun and captured by ethnic armed organisations and pro-democratic forces over the last few months, officials said.
In November, 104 Myanmar army personnel were sent to the border town of Moreh in Manipur from different places in Mizoram by Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters, and then repatriated. Earlier this month, 255 soldiers were sent back via the Lengpui airport by Myanmar air force planes.
Mizoram shares a 510-km-long border with Myanmar.&nbsp;

Russian media said that the plane disappeared from radar screens on Saturday evening while in the airspace of Afghanistan near the border with Tajikistan. The plane had crashed overnight in a remote, mountainous region of Badakhshan in Afghanistan's far north Badakhshan province.
The spokesperson for Badakhshan's provincial government, Zabihullah Amiri, told Reuters that a team had been sent to the accident site of the crash, but added that it might take them more than 12 hours to reach as it is a remote area, lying more than 200 km from the provincial capital Fayzabad.
He said there were no confirmed details on the type of plane, cause of the crash or casualties.
Initially, it was reported that the plane was an Indian chartered flight, but it was refuted by Indian authorities. &nbsp;

In a tragic incident, Indian billionaire and Mining tycoon Harpal Randhawa, his 21 year old son Amer and four others were killed in a plane crash in Zimbabwe along with four others on Friday. According to media reports, their private flight crashed near a diamond mine in Southwestern Zimbabwe.&nbsp;
The plane crashed in the Zvamahande area of Mashava, reported news media website, iHarare. The report further states that the crash happened due to a technical fault that might have led to mid-air explosion.

 Meanwhile, the police are yet to release the names of the deceased. As per the Herald, the police have only confirmed that two Zimbabweans and four foreigners were killed in the crash.
&ldquo;The Zimbabwe Republic Police reports a plane crash which occurred on September 29 between 7.30 am and 8 am, where six people are confirmed dead,&rdquo; police said.
Harpal Randhawa's company RioZim also confirmed the plane crash said it was working with relevant authorities to gather more information.

Neil Diwan, the co-pilot of a private jet that skidded off the runway at Mumbai airport suffered a spinal injury and has been moved to another hospital for surgery, Dr Deepak Namjoshi, the director of Criticare Asia hospital said on Friday.
He said seven others admitted to Criticare Asia's Andheri East hospital are stable and being monitored.
A private jet veered off the runway while landing at the Mumbai airport on Thursday amid heavy rains and all the eight people onboard have been hospitalised with injuries.
The Learjet 45 aircraft VT-DBL belonging to VSR Ventures, had flown from Visakhapatnam.
"Neil Diwan (in his early twenties) has a spinal fracture and paraplegia (a condition where both the legs have no sensation). He expressed the desire to get operated by a doctor known to him, so he was moved to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on Thursday night," Namjoshi said.
Sunil Kanjarbhat (46), the captain of the flight, sustained multiple abrasions with trauma to the chest wall and spine.
There is also a "wedge compression to L1 vertebra", he said.
Namjoshi said passenger Dhruv Kotak (40) sustained injuries to his right arm with a small abrasion on the head.
His vitals are stable.
A tear is suspected in his biceps muscle, Namjoshi said.
A Danish citizen onboard, Lars Henrik Ostergaard Sorensen (58), suffered an injury to the chest wall and upper back.
There is also a mild bilateral pleural haemorrhage and a few rib fractures; he has been advised conservative management and is currently stable, Namjoshi said.
