Italian football club Lazio have been ordered to close a part of their stadium after their fans hurled racist chants at two opponent players during a Serie A game.
Lecce defender Samuel Umtiti and winger Lameck Banda were subjected to racist chants from the Curva Nord section of Stadio Olimpico which will remain closed for Lazio's game against Empoli on Sunday.
"Lazio fans are not racist and cannot be associated with a few individuals who seriously harm the club's image," the club said.
"Lazio has always opposed all forms of racism and discrimination with all the means available. The club will, as always, offer the maximum collaboration to the authorities to identify those responsible." they further added.

"But what I'm pleased to say is that some of the things that I experienced when I was a kid and a young person, I don't think would happen today," he told Sky News.
The 42-year-old Conservative leader hailed the country's "incredible progress in tackling racism", while adding "the job is never done".

An Indian-American family was recently kidnapped, and murdered in USA's California. On the day that the family's bodies were found, the news of an Indian-origin student being brutally murdered at a university in Indiana emerged.

The gang behind all this called itself 'Dotbusters', a threatening reference to the 'bindi' sported by Indian women. Forty years later, are Indian-Americans under serious threat again?
An <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/vedant-patel-becomes-first-indian-american-to-hold-daily-state-dept-press-conference-1662527536686">Indian-American</a> family was recently kidnapped, and murdered in USA's California. On the day that the family's bodies were found, the news of an Indian-origin student being brutally murdered at a university in Indiana emerged.
Were these crimes driven by racial hatred? What is the US government doing to address this problem? And how can the Indian government make Washington take stronger action?
<h3>RECENT INCIDENTS</h3>
An Indian-American family of four was kidnapped and murdered in Merced, California. Their bodies were later found in a farm. The victims included an 8-month-old girl, her parents, and her uncle. Jasleen Kaur, Jasdeep Singh, Amandeep Singh, and baby Aroohi Dheri were reportedly kidnapped from the office of a trucking company on 3 October 2022, and their bodies were found two days later. Police arrested 48-yr-old Jesus Manuel Selgado, and his family claimed that he had confessed to the crime. Selgado allegedly tried to kill himself, and is now recovering in a hospital. The motive behind the crime is not yet clear.

Around the same time, tragic news regarding an Indian-American student emerged.
20-yr-old Varun Manish Chheda was killed on 5 October 2022 in his dorm at Purdue University in Indiana. His South Korean roommate Ji Min Sha is the prime suspect. Sha had called the police and informed them about Varun's death. Police said that the murder appeared 'unprovoked and senseless', after they took 22-yr-old Sha into custody. Varun was studying data science at the university, while Sha was a cybersecurity student. Again, the motive is yet to be established.
<h3>HATE CRIMES IN USA</h3>
What is certain is that racist attacks have been on the rise in America.
According to the FBI - America's top investigation agency - 161 anti-Asian hate crimes took place in 2019, which rose to 279 in 2020. Giving a religious break-up, FBI said that 54 anti-Sikh crimes occurred in 2019, which rose to 89 in 2020. 2019 saw 5 anti-Hindu hate crimes, which rose to 11 in 2020. The tally of anti-Buddhist crimes stood at 4 in 2019, and 15 in 2020. Anti-Muslim hate crimes saw a decline - from 180 in 2019 to 110 in 2020.
Over the years, many physical attacks on Indian-Americans have grabbed headlines. Some of them were even deadly.
In August 2022, four Indian women were allegedly assaulted and abused by a Mexican-American woman. The video of the incident had gone viral. In March 2017, Harnish Patel, a store owner in Lancaster County, South Carolina was shot dead outside his home. The same month, Deep Rai was shot in his arm while he was working on his vehicle outside his home in Kent, Washington.
A month earlier, Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla had been shot dead in a bar by a man shouting racist insults. The incident took place in Kansas City. In 2001, Balbir Singh Sodhi had been shot dead at his gas station in Mesa, Arizona, by a man who said he wanted revenge for the 9/11 terrorist attack.
<h3>'DOTBUSTER' TERROR</h3>
However, the most organised and distressing period of attacks on Indian-Americans remains the Dotbuster era.
It involved violence against Indian-origin residents of New Jersey. The hate crimes took place in late 1980s. The name of the Dotbusters gang was a reference to the 'bindi' sported by Indian women on their foreheads. Dotbusters threatened Indians to leave the Jersey City area or face violence. Over a dozen attacks, and even a few deaths were reported in 1987-88.
In response, the Indian-origin community in the city rallied and began staging public protests. The protests forced US authorities to focus on security and arrest the culprits. The attacks reportedly stopped by 1989 following the demonstrations.
The list of Dotbusters' victims was long. In August 1987, Bhered Patel was beaten up with a metal pipe inside his apartment in Jersey City. A month later, Kaushal Saran was thrashed with a baseball bat in Jersey City Heights. The same month, Navroze Mody was beaten up with bricks, and he died four days later. In June 1988, Jakariya Kirit was called a "dirty Hindu" and beaten up in Jersey City Heights. The same month, Malkiat Singh was shot dead in Jersey.
<h3>THE SOLUTION</h3>
At a recent event against racism, called United We Stand, <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/our-country-hurts-us-president-joe-biden-after-hurricane-ian-slams-florida-1664513753457">US President Joe Biden</a> had spoken strongly against hate crimes. He had blamed politics, media, and the internet for giving "too much oxygen" to hatred. While Biden speaks out against racism, the fracture in American politics, including over anti-migrant sentiments, is still boiling.
Indian-Americans form the second-largest immigrant community in USA. In such a situation, it might be time for the Indian government to take up the cause at the highest level to push American authorities to stem this hatred at the source.

Sethi further alleged that the person who checked his wife's shopping bags, even sniggered at the fact that she had bought everything and didn't even care to reply when asked about why she was singled out.
"Racist treatment at @IKEAIndia store in Hyderabad. Only my wife, from Manipur got frisked for goods she bought. No one else before us. And then all supervisory staff came to defend the racism. Great show from an 'international store'.
Cheers to another usual day," Sethi tweeted on Sunday. "And the supervisors said, yeah call police if you want, we will deal. And it didn't end there. Daily racism that our people face," he said in another tweet.
Responding to Sethi's allegation, Ikea India in a tweet said it believes that equality is a human right and condemns all forms of racism.
"At IKEA, we believe that equality is a human right, and we condemn all forms of racism and prejudice. We regret the inconvenience caused to you while following the mandatory billing protocol," the Swedish furniture maker said.
As a process, customers who self-checkout are requested for a final check before leaving the store to ensure the billing is correct and customers do not face any problems regarding double charging, repeat scanning of products etc, Ikea further said in another tweet.
Senior Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao on Monday described the incident as "appalling" and asked IKEA to issue an apology. He also asked the international brand to educate, sensitise & train its staff to respect all customers graciously.
"This is appalling and absolutely unacceptable @IKEAIndia. Please ensure a proper apology is issued & more importantly educate, sensitise & train your staff to respect all your customers graciously. Hope you will make amends asap," Rama Rao tweeted.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has urged the Dallas police to prosecute to the full extent of law a woman seen harassing and assaulting four Indian descent women in Texas last week.
"Such bigoted attacks motivated by racism, xenophobia, and other forms of hate victimise not only those directly targeted by them, but also broader communities through creating an atmosphere of fear and danger," Krishnamoorthi said.
Esmeralda Upton from Plano in Texas was arrested for the racially-motivated physical and verbal assault of the four women at a parking lot last Wednesday.
Upton identifies herself in the video as a Mexican-American.
"I hate you Indian. All these Indians come to America because they want a better life," she is seen saying in the video.
The video shows her telling the group of women to "go back to India".
"You… people are ruining this country," she says in the video which has now gone viral, sending shockwaves among the Indian-American community across the United States.
"I'm appalled by the footage of the hate-motivated harassment and assault on four women of Indian descent and urge police to prosecute the woman responsible to the full extent of the law," the Indian-American Congressman said in a statement. "As our country continues to combat the surge in anti-Asian hate since the beginning of the pandemic, I urge all Americans to come together and prove that our country and our people are better than this," he said.
In a separate statement, representatives of Indian-American organisations in New England on Sunday strongly condemn the recent act of anti-Asian violence in Plano, Texas.
"We are very disturbed by this and recently increased acts of violence and hate crimes against Indians, South Asians, and Asian Americans in general. We do commend the Plano Police department for responding to the incident with urgency and understanding," they said.
Asian-Americans, like all other immigrants, have made significant contributions to this great land despite facing ongoing prejudice based on accents, colour, religion, or perceptions of leadership or other abilities, they said.
"We believe in the fair treatment of all human beings regardless of age, education level, race, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, nationality, national origin, creed, accent, physical and mental ability, political and religious stance, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, socioeconomic status, veteran status, profession, or any other human differences,” the organisations said.
"We unequivocally and unapologetically condemn the divisive forces of hate, inequity, and injustice. We stand united in love and peace and stand against racist, discriminatory, violent acts against any community," they said.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has urged the Dallas police to prosecute to the full extent of law a woman seen harassing and assaulting four Indian descent women in Texas last week.
"Such bigoted attacks motivated by racism, xenophobia, and other forms of hate victimise not only those directly targeted by them, but also broader communities through creating an atmosphere of fear and danger," Krishnamoorthi said.
Esmeralda Upton from Plano in Texas was arrested for the racially-motivated physical and verbal assault of the four women at a parking lot last Wednesday.
Upton identifies herself in the video as a Mexican-American.
"I hate you Indian. All these Indians come to America because they want a better life," she is seen saying in the video.
The video shows her telling the group of women to "go back to India".
"You&hellip; people are ruining this country," she says in the video which has now gone viral, sending shockwaves among the Indian-American community across the United States.
"I'm appalled by the footage of the hate-motivated harassment and assault on four women of Indian descent and urge police to prosecute the woman responsible to the full extent of the law," the Indian-American Congressman said in a statement. "As our country continues to combat the surge in anti-Asian hate since the beginning of the pandemic, I urge all Americans to come together and prove that our country and our people are better than this," he said.
In a separate statement, representatives of Indian-American organisations in New England on Sunday strongly condemn the recent act of anti-Asian violence in Plano, Texas.
"We are very disturbed by this and recently increased acts of violence and hate crimes against Indians, South Asians, and Asian Americans in general. We do commend the Plano Police department for responding to the incident with urgency and understanding," they said.
Asian-Americans, like all other immigrants, have made significant contributions to this great land despite facing ongoing prejudice based on accents, colour, religion, or perceptions of leadership or other abilities, they said.
"We believe in the fair treatment of all human beings regardless of age, education level, race, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, nationality, national origin, creed, accent, physical and mental ability, political and religious stance, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, socioeconomic status, veteran status, profession, or any other human differences,&rdquo; the organisations said.
"We unequivocally and unapologetically condemn the divisive forces of hate, inequity, and injustice. We stand united in love and peace and stand against racist, discriminatory, violent acts against any community," they said.

India on Thursday condemned the desecration of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at a Vishnu temple in the Richmond Hill city of Ontario in Canada, which police said is being investigated as a hate crime.&nbsp; &nbsp; "We are distressed at the desecration of Mahatma Gandhi statue at Vishnu temple in Richmond Hill. This criminal, hateful act of vandalism has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada. We are in contact with Canadian authorities to investigate this hate crime," the Indian Consulate General in Toronto said in a tweet.&nbsp;
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa also expressed 'deep anguish' over what it called a 'hate crime' aimed at 'terrorising' the Indian diaspora and demanded a probe into the incident.
"We are deeply anguished by this hate crime that seeks to terrorize the Indian community. It has led to increased concern and insecurity in the Indian community here. We have approached the Canadian government to investigate and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly," tweeted the high commission.&nbsp; &nbsp; The local police reportedly described this as a 'hate and bias-motivated incident'. "Someone defaced the statue with graphic words, including rapist' and Khalistan," Constable Amy Boudreau, spokesperson for York Regional Police, was quoted as saying by ANI.

A fresh conviction was handed out in the George Floyd murder case which sparked widespread Black Lives Matter protests in USA.
On 7 July, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years in prison for violating Floyd's civil rights. Chauvin had earlier been sentenced to 22 and a half years in jail for murder and manslaughter.
On May 25, 2020, Chauvin had killed African-American Floyd by pinning him to the ground for over 9 minutes even as the latter said that he was unable to breathe. During the July 7 hearing, Chauvin said that he wishes the best for George Floyd's children but did not issue a direct apology.
Chauvin had earlier signed a plea deal which allows the two jail sentences to run concurrently. He will also be transferred from a Minnesota state prison to a federal incarceration facility where he would be safer and under less-restrictive conditions, as per experts.

In a shocking incident, a South African cricketer Mondli Khumalo has been admitted to a hospital in Bristol after being assaulted outside a pub in Bridgwater, the UK on Saturday.
The 20-year old bowler was given emergency treatment at Southmead Hospital.
Khumalo is in an induced coma and has had two operations as he suffered bleeding in the brain. A man aged 27 was arrested on suspicion and was released under investigation.

Boucher was among a number of CSA employees against whom allegations of racism were implicated last month by the Social Justice and Nation Building commision. CSA in its statement said that his 'gross misconduct could lead to his dismissal as well. However, currently, he will continue to lead his team in the ongoing ODI series against India. The coach will face a disciplinary hearing headed by senior counsel advocate Terry Motau on 26th Jan. As per the allegations, abusive and racist words were used to address former spinner Paul Adams in a South African team song which was used when he and Boucher both were a part of the Playing XI from 1995 to 2004. Boucher has however apologised for the use of foul language.
