A group of three masked men allegedly beat to death a 30-year-old cleric of a mosque in Rajasthan's Ajmer, police said on Sunday.
A case has been lodged in the matter and efforts are on to identify and nab the accused, they said.
According to the police, the incident took place around 2 am on Saturday when the accused allegedly entered the mosque located in Kanchan Nagar under the Ramganj police station limits and attacked the cleric, Mohammad Tahir, with sticks.
Tahir died on the spot. Six children were also present inside the mosque when the incident occurred, the police said.
The trio allegedly threatened the children not to disclose the matter and took away their mobile phones so that they could not inform anyone or call for help, they said.
After the accused fled, the children came out of the mosque and told people about the incident, they added.
Tahir used to teach children in the mosque, according to the police.
SHO Ramganj Ravindra Singh said Tahir's body was handed over to his family members after they arrived in Ajmer from Uttar Pradesh.
A case has been registered over the matter against unidentified persons under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code, the SHO said.
He said so far no arrest has been made in this connection and efforts are on to identify and arrest the accused.&nbsp;

A girl from Rajasthan said her school did not let her appear for class 12 board examinations because she had been gang-raped last year. According to the student's complaint, the private school officials in Ajmer told her that the atmosphere would be spoiled if she appeared for the examination.&nbsp;
This incident came to light when the girl approached a teacher at another school. The teacher advised her to call the child helpline number. Ajmer's Child Welfare Commission (CWC) filed a case and will take necessary action after an investigation.&nbsp;
However, the school claimed that they did not give an admit card to the student as she did not attend classes for 4 months.&nbsp;
Last year, the student was raped by her uncle and two other men. The girl told the CWC chairperson Anjali Sharma that the school suggested that she should study from home as her coming to school could spoil the atmosphere.&nbsp;
The student agreed and was preparing for her board exams at home. Later, when she went to collect her admit card, she was told by the school that she was no longer a student of the school.&nbsp;
CWC chairperson Anjali Sharma told NDTV, "When I spoke to the girl, she told me that she was dejected as she is a bright student. She had scored 79% in her class 10 board exams."

The Rajasthan government on Thursday suspended three resident doctors of a government hospital here over negligence after a pregnant woman was denied admission and had to deliver the child near the hospital's gate, officials said.
Shubhra Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Medical Education, said after the matter came to light, the department constituted an inquiry committee with immediate effect, according to an official statement.
Taking action on the committee's report, three resident doctors of Kanwatia Hospital -- Kusum Saini, Neha Rajawat and Manoj -- were suspended after "serious negligence and insensitivity" was found on their part, the statement said.
A show cause notice was also issued to Kanwatia Hospital Superintendent Dr Rajendra Singh Tanwar for supervisory negligence in the case, it added.
The incident took place on Wednesday when the pregnant woman was not admitted to the hospital. She experienced labour pain while walking out and was forced to give birth to the child near the gate of the hospital, the officials said.&nbsp;

Police in Baran district on Thursday said a 40-year-old man was murdered nine days ago and his body was left in a dry pond allegedly by his two friends for refusing to perform oral sex.
One of them has been held while the other is admitted to a hospital under police guard after he ingested a poisonous substance fearing arrest, they said.
Baran Superintendent of Police Raj Kumar Choudhary said Om Prakash Bairwa was found dead in the Baran city police station area on February 26.
Based on technical investigation and inquiries, police traced the two accused, Murlidhar Prajapati (32) and Surendra Yadav, both residents of Baran city, the official said, adding that Prajapati was arrested.
During initial interrogation, Prajapati admitted to the murder, Choudhary added.
He said Prajapati, Yadav and Bairwa consumed alcohol together on the day of the murder and went to a nearby village to visit Prajapati's sister.
On the way back, Prajapati and Yadav beat up Bairwa and hacked him to death for refusing to perform oral sex with them, the official added.
Prajapati ran a roadside dhaba while the other accused is a daily wage worker, SHO of Baran city police station Ramvilas said.

Jhunjhunu Superintendent of Police (SP) Devendra Vishnoi has done a new experiment and issued a letter in this regard on Monday.
A reward of 50 paise has been announced for catching Yogesh Meghwal, who is wanted in a case of arms act registered with the Singhana Police Station.
"A reward of 50 paise will be given to the team that arrests the accused or the person who gives correct information regarding this wanted accused," Vishnoi said in the order.
When contacted, the SP said that it was done to give a clear and positive message in the society that the worth or status of criminals in society is worth 50 paise.
This comes as the police have not been able to catch the accused despite much effort.&nbsp;

Three police constables have been booked for raping an 18-year-old woman for more than a year in Rajasthan's Alwar district, officials said on Sunday.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Anand Sharma told PTI that the woman gave a complaint against the three policemen to him on Saturday evening. She also claimed that the accused threatened to implicate her brother in a false case if she reported the matter, the officer said.
The policemen have been called back from their places of posting and attached with the Police Lines, the officials said. They said that a case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 376-D (gang rape), and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at the Raini police station.
One of the accused was posted at the Raini police station, one at the office of Rajgarh Circle Officer and another at the Malakheda police station. The Raini police station falls under the Rajgarh Circle.
In her complaint, she stated she was raped by them for more than a year, the SP said. The victim had come to the SP Office along with her mother.
On provisions of the POCSO Act being invoked against the accused, Sharma said when she was first raped in November last year, she was a minor.
He said after he got the complaint, it was immediately sent to the Raini police station and FIR was registered on Saturday night.
"After the FIR was registered, all the three constables were shunted to the Police Lines so that investigation into the case is not affected," the SP said and added that no arrests have been made yet.

The BJP's decision to name first-time MLA Bhajan Lal Sharma as its chief ministerial pick in Rajasthan may have surprised many but the choice is a tribute to dedicated organisational workers, a quality which along with social signalling figured in picking chief ministers for two other states as well, top functionaries of the party said.
In a post-poll scenario where the BJP top brass believed it had the mandate to usher in a new line of leadership amid claims of many entrenched satraps, more so in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, it has opted for fresh faces whose elevation will enthuse its ordinary workers, sources said.
A senior BJP leader noted that Sharma fitted the bill of an ideal 'karyakarta' toiling for the organisation for decades who campaigned diligently for the party in many states during a series of assembly polls across the country over the last many years.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi often emphasising in BJP's meetings for its members to work sincerely without hankering for position, the elevation of the likes of Sharma and Madhya Pradesh chief minister-elect Mohan Yadav has sent out the message that the leadership means what it says, party sources said.
While Yadav has been a three-term MLA and a minister in the state, he lacked the public profile that many seasoned party leaders such as Narendra Singh Tomar and Prahlad Singh Patel besides the outgoing chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had.
Even in Chhattisgarh, the incoming chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai may have a vast legislative experience as multi-term MP and MLA but he was not seen as a frontrunner, more so as the tribal leader was replaced with OBC face Arun Sao as the party's state president in 2022.
Political considerations driven by social signalling always plays a role but the decision to pick Sai, Yadav and Sharma also sends out a clear message within the organisation and outside, party leaders said.
They hail from ST, OBC and Brahmin community respectively, underlining the party's emphasis on putting together a cohesive social coalition as it gets ready for Lok Sabha polls next year.
A low-key leader, former Union minister Sai was preferred to many hopefuls, including several ST leaders, for the hot seat in the state in a recognition of his decades-long work in the state's tribal regions in line with Hindutva organisation RSS agenda. The BJP swept the tribal region in the recent polls after suffering decimation in 2018.
Sharma is the BJP's choice in a state where many regional heavyweights including Union ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Arjun Ram Meghwal besides former chief minister Vasundhara Raje were in contention.
What all the three new BJP chief ministerial choices have in common is their vast organisational experience and loyalty, carrying out the responsibilities assigned to them by the party leadership.
That they were not seen associated with any regional faction was a plus for them, the sources added, noting that this coupled with their modest profile will also help them in getting along with regional heavyweights.
All the three chief ministers will have two deputy chief ministers coming from different castes, a nod to the BJP's keen eye on social messaging as well.&nbsp;

The BJP on Tuesday picked first-time MLA Bhajan Lal Sharma as Rajasthan's new chief minister, ending days of speculation that followed its victory in the assembly polls.
The surprise choice was announced after BJP MLAs met and elected the 56-year-old MLA from Sanganer as the leader of its legislature party.
Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa will be the deputy chief ministers and Vasudev Devnani the speaker of the state assembly, said senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh, who led a team of three party central observers to oversee the meeting.
At the meeting, the CM-designate's name was proposed by former chief minister Vasundhara Raje, who was herself considered to be in the running for the top post.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-backed Sharma won the Sanganer constituency with a margin of 48,081 votes. He belongs to Bharatpur district.
Sharma, who is at present the BJP's state general secretary, holds a master's degree in political science.
Prior to the legislature party meeting, a group photo was taken and Sharma is seen standing in the last row.
Diya Kumari, a member of the erstwhile Jaipur royal family, is a two-time MLA and one-time MP.
The 51-year-old BJP leader, who became an MLA for the first time in 2013 from the Sawai Madhopur assembly seat, was said to be among the frontrunners for the post of chief minister.
In 2019, she was elected as an MP from Rajsamand.

She is the daughter of erstwhile Jaipur royal Sawai Bhawani Singh, who earned distinction in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war as a Lt Colonel and Commanding Officer of the Para Commandos of the 10th Parachute Regiment.
Kumari is also associated with several non-government organisations, including the Eye Bank Society of Rajasthan, and Rays, an NGO working for HIV+ children, of which she is the patron.
Bairwa, who was declared deputy chief minister along with Kumari, is a Dalit face in the BJP. The 54-year-old won the Dudu constituency in the November 25 Rajasthan assembly elections.
Bairwa, who defeated Congress' Babu Lal Nagar with a margin of 35,743 votes, is Ph.D from the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur.
The BJP won 115 seats in the assembly elections, while the Congress got 69 seats. Elections were held on 199 of the 200 seats in the state.
Polling in Karanpur was deferred due to the death of Congress candidate and sitting MLA Gurmeet Singh Koonar. It will now be held on January 5.&nbsp;

The BJP in Rajasthan on Sunday expelled a party leader in Alwar, Sandeep Dayma, over his derogatory remark on gurdwaras and mosques at a recent rally in the Tijara assembly constituency.
The decision to expel Dayma was announced by Onkar Singh Lakhawat, the chairman of the Rajasthan BJP's disciplinary committee.
"Sandeep Dayma has been expelled from the party on the direction of the state president for making a statement against the ideology of the party," Lakhawat said.
The development comes after widespread criticism of Dayma's remark at the rally in Tijara before the filing of nomination papers by BJP candidate Baba Balaknath for the November 25 Rajasthan assembly polls.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was also present in the rally.
Speaking at a rally on Wednesday, Dayma reportedly said that mosques and gurdwaras that have come up will become "open sores" and those should be uprooted.
Facing flak over the remark, Dayma, a former chairman of the Tijara Nagar Palika, issued a video apology, claiming that he intended to say "mosques and madrassas" but somehow ended up uttering the words "mosques and gurdwaras" by mistake.
"With folded hands, I apologise to the Sikh samaj. I don't know how this mistake happened. I cannot even imagine that I could make such a wrong comment for the Sikh community that has always defended Hindu and 'Sanatan Dharma'," Dayma added.
On Thursday, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee shared the video apology of Dayma on the social media platform 'X' and charged that the BJP leader should be ashamed of his apology as well.
"In his apology, BJP leader Sandeep Dayma, who gave a statement of uprooting gurdwaras and mosques during his party rally in Tijara, says, 'I wanted to say masjid-madrassa but somehow ended up saying gurdwara.' He should be ashamed of this statement too as commenting against the religious places of Muslims is equally condemnable&hellip;," it said.
On Sunday, BJP leaders in Punjab also sought the expulsion of Dayma.
The women's wing chief of the Punjab BJP, Jai Inder Kaur, got a police complaint lodged in Chandigarh against Dayma.
While senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh sought strict action against Dayma, the party's Punjab unit chief, Sunil Jakhar, said the Rajasthan leader's outburst cannot be condoned.
Dayma had contested the 2018 Rajasthan assembly polls from the Tijara seat.

A total of 25 premises in the state capital Jaipur and Dausa are being searched by the Enforcement Directorate

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted fresh searches in poll-bound Rajasthan, including at the premises of a senior IAS officer, as part of its money laundering investigation into the alleged Jal Jivan Mission scam, official sources said.
A total of 25 premises in the state capital Jaipur, and Dausa, including that of ACS in the PHE department, Subodh Agarwal, are being covered, they said.
Some other linked persons are also being covered under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said.
The central agency had carried out similar raids in this case in September.
The state will vote for its 200-member Assembly on November 25 and counting of votes will take place on December 3 along with four other states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, and Telangana.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has alleged that the central agencies were acting on the directions of the BJP-led government at the Centre to target the opposition.
The money laundering case stems from a Rajasthan anti-corruption bureau (ACB) FIR which alleged that Padamchand Jain, proprietor of Shree Shyam Tubewell Company, Mahesh Mittal, proprietor of Shree Ganpati Tubewell Company and others were involved in "giving bribes" to public servants in order to obtain illegal protection, obtaining tenders, getting bills sanctioned and covering up irregularities in respect of work executed by them in respect of various tenders received by them from the public health and engineering department (PHED).
"The suspects were also involved in the purchase of stolen goods from Haryana for using the same in their tenders/contracts and had also submitted fake work completion letters from IRCON to get PHED contracts," the agency had alleged in a statement issued earlier.
The Jal Jeevan mission launched by the Union government aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through household tap connections and it was being implemented by the state PHED in Rajasthan.
