West Bengal BJP's Murshidabad unit has announced plans to construct a Ram temple in Berhampore, days after TMC MLA Humayun Kabir proposed to set up a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid at Beldanga in the same district.
The BJP said the temple&rsquo;s construction will begin on January 22, 2025, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. BJP&rsquo;s Berhampore organisational district president, Shakharav Sarkar, said land for the temple has already been identified, and the project is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore.&nbsp;
"We have already identified a land in Beharampore area and the construction work for the Ram Temple based on the design of the temple on Ayodhya will begin soon," he told reporters.
Kabir, the TMC MLA from Beldanga, had on Tuesday announced plans for the mosque, which he said would honour the sentiments of the region&rsquo;s significant minority population.
His remarks have sparked political controversy, with opposition parties accusing him of attempting to polarise communities for political gain.
The BJP&rsquo;s counterproposal to build a Ram temple is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its presence among the Hindu community in Murshidabad, a district where minorities make up around 75 per cent of the population.
Responding to the controversy, the TMC distanced itself from Kabir&rsquo;s remarks, describing them as his personal opinion.
&ldquo;The TMC has nothing to do with this statement of Kabir,&rdquo; a senior party leader said.&nbsp;
Kabir&rsquo;s announcement has also drawn criticism from the Congress, which accused him of playing divisive politics in a sensitive region.

Acharya Satyendra Das, who is the chief priest of Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, has raised doubts over the construction quality of the new structure within 6 months of the grand inauguration.
Speaking to PTI news agency on the 24th of June, Das claimed that ever since rainfall started, water has been leaking from the roof and there is no proper way to drain it out. He said that if the rain intensifies, it would be difficult to offer prayers.
He has also demanded a proper investigation of the construction of the Ram Mandir, saying that the water began leaking after the first rain where the Ram Lalla idol has been enshrined.
"It is very surprising. So many engineers are here and the Pran Pratishtha was held on January 22, but water is leaking from the roof. Nobody would've thought this," Das said.
The chief priest further raised doubts on the completion of the construction of the temple. Though the date for the completion of the construction of the Ram Temple is 2025, he believes that completing it within the given time might be difficult.&nbsp;
Acharya Satyendra Das further said that it is 2024 now, and 2025 is just a year away, and thus, it is not very likely that the construction work will be completed within a year. Currently, construction work is underway to build designated places for idols of other Gods as well.
Meanwhile, rains on Saturday night caused severe waterlogging on the Rampath road and its adjoining lanes. While sewer water entered houses in the area, the Rampath road and other newly constructed roads in Ayodhya caved in at some places.
There was waterlogging from Jalwanpura to Hanumangarhi Bhaktipath and from Tedhi Bazaar to the inner areas, locals said.
Reacting to the sewer water entering houses in the lanes of Rampath during the rain, Ayodhya Mayor Girish Pati Tripathi said, "I have started damage control since morning. I have deployed several teams of the municipality to remove water from the houses." However, attempts to seek the response of top officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) did not fructify.
Meanwhile, the Congress accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of indulging in corruption in the temple construction and building of civic facilities in the temple town.
"Be it the coffin of the martyrs or the temple of God, all these have become opportunities for corruption for the BJP. Even the symbols of faith and purity in the country are just opportunities of loot for them," Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai alleged in a statement on Monday.
"It has become clear from the statement of chief priest Satyendra Das that water is leaking in the sanctum sanctorum of the Ram temple built at a cost of crores due to the first rain and there is no proper drainage system," he said, Rai said, "Not only this, the mask of the BJP, which was beating the drum of development of Ayodhya, has come off with the road collapsing at many places on the Rampath built at a cost of Rs 624 crore." He alleged that the BJP has made Ayodhya a "hub of corruption by getting second-rate construction done in a hurry only to gain electoral benefits".

Commando was rushed to the Ayodhya medical college, and later transferred to KGMU Lucknow as his condition was said to be serious.

A provincial armed constabulary (PAC) commando was injured in an "accidental firing" while cleaning his weapon at his post in the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya on Tuesday evening, police said.
Platoon commander Ram Prasad (50) was rushed to the Ayodhya medical college, from which he was referred to KGMU Lucknow as his condition was said to be serious, they said.
The commando has been posted at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya for about 6 months for security duty.
Inspector General of Police Pravin Kumar told PTI that the commando was injured while he was cleaning weapons at his post.
Dr Vinod Kumar Arya, emergency in-charge of the medical college in Ayodhya, said the bullet hit Ram Prasad on the left side of his chest.
Since his condition was serious, the commando had to be referred to KGMU in Lucknow, the doctor said.
Prasad is a resident of Achalpur village in Amethi district.

A Congress MLA has sparked a controversy after he commented on the colour of the new Ram Lalla idol in Ayodhya during a discussion on the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand Assembly.&nbsp;
Congress MLA from Jaspur, Adesh Singh Chauhan, according to reports, said that scriptures say that Ram was dusky but the BJP has him black. He was referring to the black stone used to carve out the new Ram Lall idol for the temple in Ayodhya.&nbsp;
"According to the Hindu scriptures, Ram was 'sanwala' (dusky), but you people made the Ram Lalla idol installed in the temple in Ayodhya black," news agency PTI reported Chauhan as saying.
The comment spared a huge uproar in the Uttarakhand Assembly with BJP MLAs raising 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans.&nbsp;
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Premchand Aggarwal rose from his seat and asked the Congress MLA to speak only on the UCC bill. The minister accused Chauhan of insulting Ram and added that Congress only does appeasement and votebank politics.&nbsp;
The House was soon brought to order by Speaker Ritu Khanduri who asked the minister to take his seat and the Congress MLA to not deviate from the topic of discussion.&nbsp;

Speaking to NDTV, Ram Janambhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust Treasurer Swami Gurudev Giriji said that six of the temples will be inside and seven outside the temple complex. The main temple that was consecrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 24 currently has only one floor and work is on for the second floor. Four temples dedicated to Lord Ganapati, Shiva, Surya and Goddess Jagdamba will also be built. A separate temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman will also come up.

Prime Minister Modi will also visit Kuber Tila, where an ancient Shiv temple has been restored. He will perform a 'pooja' there, the member said.
The magnificent Ram Janmbhoomi Mandir or Ram temple has been constructed in the traditional Nagara style. Its length (east-west) is 380 feet; width 250 feet and height 161 feet. It is supported by a total of 392 pillars and has 44 doors.
The pillars and walls of the temple showcase intricately sculpted depictions of Hindu deities, gods and goddesses. In the main sanctum sanctorum at the temple's ground floor, the idol of Ram Lalla has been placed.
The consecration rituals for the 'Pran Pratishtha' started from the Saryu river on January 16 and will be completed on Monday afternoon in the 'abhijeet muhurta', according to the trust.

Shobha yatras to bhandaras, Sundar Kand recitals to aartis, the AAP has planned a series of events across the the 70 assembly constituencies of Delhi to mark the consecration ceremony at Ram temple in Ayodhya on Monday. &nbsp;Addressing a press conference, AAP senior leader and MLA Dilip Pandey said that while the entire country is enthusiastically lined up to welcome Lord Ram, Delhi is not lagging behind. &nbsp;"All party ministers, MLAs, councillors, leaders, and workers will participate in 'bhandaras' (community kitchens), prasad distribution, and shobha yatras organised to celebrate Lord Ram's welcome on January 22 across all 70 constituencies of Delhi," Pandey said. &nbsp;He added that Ramlila is being organised in Delhi and 'shobha yatras' are being taken out at seven places to celebrate the 'Pran Pratishtha' of the Lord Ram idol.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday attended the three-day Ramlila event being organised by the Delhi government's Art, Culture and Languages department.
The conclusion of the event, which began on Saturday, will coincide with Monday's consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
The party had organised recitation of Sundar Kand on Tuesday.
&ldquo;On this joyous and fortunate occasion, 'bhandaras' are being arranged in many locations across 44 constituencies in Delhi," Pandey said.
"Additionally, Sundar Kand recitals are being organised by the party in three constituencies. Moreover, in 16-17 constituencies, after the aarti (worship), a programme for distributing fruit prasad has been scheduled,&rdquo; the AAP MLA shared.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged all ministers, party MLAs, councillors, leaders, and workers to participate wherever a shobha yatra is taking place, contribute to the bhandaras and serve the people on this glorious occasion.
&ldquo;Under the 'Mukyamantri Teerth Yatra Yojana' plan, additional trains are being operated from Delhi to Ayodhya for the pilgrims travelling to Ayodhya for Ram Lalla's darshan." Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had last year announced that trains would be run to Ayodhya under the Delhi government&rsquo;s free pilgrimage scheme.
"Lord Ram does not belong to any specific political party. He is the epitome of the highest standards of humanity for the entire country. He represents the greatest ideals of Indian civilisation that adorn humanity. So CM Arvind Kejriwal will surely go to seek his blessings, and all party leaders will line up together to visit with their families,&rdquo; he added.
The consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya will be held on January 22 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present there.

On the night of December 22, 1949, an idol of baby Ram &lsquo;miraculously appeared&rsquo; or was placed under the central dome of the Babri mosque&nbsp;
While the believers called it a &lsquo;divine occurrence&rsquo;, police records note that a sadhu Abhay Ram Das placed the 9-inch idol inside the 16th Century Mughal structure.&nbsp;
But the incident marked a key moment in the Ram temple-Babri mosque dispute. &nbsp;
The idol &lsquo;Ram Lalla Virajman&rsquo; stood there locked and isolated till 1986 when a court allowed public worship giving momentum to the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. &nbsp;
In 1989, the deity became the chief litigant in the Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid dispute and those representing him staked claim to what is believed to be his birth site.&nbsp;
The idol remained in a tent after the demolition of the mosque in 1992 till the Supreme Court ruled in its favour in 2019. &nbsp;
And then &lsquo;Ram Lalla Virajman&rsquo;, the idol that appeared under Babri mosque&rsquo;s central mosque in 1949, became the the victor of India's longest property dispute. &nbsp;
In March 2020, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath relocated the &lsquo;Ram Lalla Virajman&rsquo; to a make-shift temple. &nbsp;
Now with a 51-inch new idol taking its place as the presiding deity of Ayodhya, there are questions about Ram Lalla Virajman&rsquo;s future but the temple&rsquo;s chief priest Satyendra Das has said neglecting the old idol is inconceivable.&nbsp;
He said that the new Ram Lalla will be installed in the temple&rsquo;s sanctum santorum and be the &lsquo;achal&rsquo; or immovable idol. Ram Lalla Virajman will find a place right in front of that idol and serve as the &lsquo;chal&rsquo; or movable idol. The priest said it will be the &lsquo;utsav murti&rsquo; or festival idol for processions.&nbsp;

Firozabad bangles with images of Lord Ram reach Ayodhya for distribution among devotees on Jan 22

Taking inspiration from Agarwal's initiative, some traders at the city's main bangle market, Gali Bauharan, are also making special bangles with pictures of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita that can be used by brides.

Over 10,000 bangles from Firozabad reached Ayodhya on Thursday and were handed over to the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra trust in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh.
"Firozabad is famous for its glass industry. Its bangles are famous everywhere. These bangles have no joints and are polished with gold. They have been brought by Firozabad traders and 10,000 bangles have been formally handed over to the temple trust. They will be distributed among devotees by the trust," Singh told reporters.
A businessman from Firozabad, Anand Agarwal, said the traders have taken permission from the authorities to set up stalls at the venue on January 22 and 23 for the distribution of these bangles among women devotees visiting Ayodhya for the 'Pran Pratishtha' (consecration) ceremony at the Ram temple free of cost.
These bangles, prepared by months of labour by both Hindu and Muslim workers, bear pictures of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita and Lord Hanuman.

All central government offices across the country will remain closed for half a day on January 22, due to the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya, a Personnel Ministry order issued on Thursday said.
The 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony of the new idol of Ram Lalla at the sanctum sanctorum of the Ram temple is scheduled for Monday. The ceremony is set to be performed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"The Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha at Ayodhya will be celebrated on 22nd January 2024 across India. To enable employees to participate in the celebrations, it has been decided that all central government offices, central institutions and central industrial establishments throughout India will be closed for half day till 1430 hours on 22nd January 2024," it said in the order issued to all central government ministries/ departments.
When contacted, Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh told PTI that the decision has been taken in view of the "overwhelming" public sentiments.
"There was a huge public demand across the country regarding this. Decision on half-day closure of central government offices on January 22 has been taken in view of overwhelming public sentiments," he said.
