West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Dubai International Airport on Wednesday. Their interaction was captured in a video shared by PTI.
In the clip, Wickremesinghe asked Banerjee if she would be leading the opposition alliance (INDIA).
"Can I ask you one question? Are you going to lead the opposition alliance?" asked Wickremesinghe.&nbsp;
Surprised by the unexpected question, the TMC chief said, &ldquo;Oh my god! It depends on people.&rdquo;
Later, Wickremesinghe repeated the question to an official present there, &ldquo;Is she going to lead the opposition alliance?&rdquo;
In response, Banerjee said, &ldquo;The opposition may be in position (power) also.&rdquo;
During the interaction, Banerjee invited the Sri Lankan President to the Bengal Global Business Summit to be held in Kolkata.
In a post on X, Banerjee wrote, "His Excellency The President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe saw me at the Dubai International Airport Lounge and called me to join for some discussion. I have been humbled by his greetings and invited him to the Bengal Global Business Summit 2023 in Kolkata. HE the President of Sri Lanka extended a cordial invitation to me to visit Sri Lanka. It was a pleasant interaction with deep implications."

Under emergency, security forces are allowed to search, arrest seize, and remove weapons and explosives, enter and search premises, and body-search persons.&nbsp;
The government gazette notofication dated July 17 was issued Monday morning. The 225-member Parliament is expected to elect the new president on July 20.
The president is empowered to impose emergency regulations part 2 of the public security ordinance which says &ldquo;(a) if the president is of the opinion that the police are inadequate to deal with a situation he may gazette an order calling out the armed forces to maintain public order&rdquo;.

This was under article 37(1) of the Constitution, he said.
Meanwhile, the protesters who had arrived in large numbers at the PM Office have surrounded the building. 
The Prime Minister has also ordered the security forces to arrest people acting in a riotous manner.
President Rajapaksa, 73, left the country along with his wife and two security officers on a military jet, a brief statement from the Sri Lanka Air Force said.
On Saturday, Rajapaksa had announced to step down on Wednesday after thousands of protesters stormed his official residence, blaming him for the unprecedented economic crisis that has brought the country to its knees.
As the news of Rajapaksa's departure spread, an enthusiastic crowd gathered in Galle Face Green chanting the popular phrase Aragalayata Jayawewa, or “Victory to the struggle” in Sinhalese and "Go home Gota".
The Police fired tear gas on protesters who had gathered near the PM office. The protesters broke through a barricade despite tear gas and stormed the prime minister's office, calling for his resignation.
The protesters continue to occupy the three main buildings in the capital, the President’s House, the presidential secretariat and the prime minister’s official residence, Temple Trees, calling for their resignations.
Sri Lanka, a country of 22 million people, is under the grip of an unprecedented economic turmoil, the worst in seven decades, leaving millions struggling to buy food, medicine, fuel and other essentials. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe last week said Sri Lanka is now a bankrupt country.

The 73-year-old United National Party (UNP) was appointed as the prime minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa after they held closed-door discussions on Wednesday.
Wickremesinghe, who has served as the country’s prime minister for four times, was in October 2018 fired from the post of prime minister by then President Maithripala Sirisena. However, he was reinstalled as the prime minister by Sirisena after two months.
Members of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), a section of the main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and several other parties have expressed their support to show majority for Wickremesinghe in Parliament, sources said.
The UNP, the oldest party in the country, had failed to win a single seat from districts, including Wickremesinghe who contested from the UNP stronghold Colombo in 2020 parliamentary polls.
He later found his way to Parliament through the sole national list allocated to the UNP on the basis of cumulative national vote. His deputy Sajith Premadasa had led the breakaway SJB and became the main Opposition.
Wickremesinghe is widely accepted as a man who could manage the economy with far-sighted policies, and is perceived as the Sri Lankan politician who could command international cooperation.
Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since gaining independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices.
