Jharkhand Police gave a compensation of &nbsp;₹10 lakh to the husband of Spanish woman who was allegedly gang-raped in Dumka on Friday, March 1. A cheque of ₹10 lakh was handed over by the Deputy Commissioner to the husband of the rape survivor.
Anjaneyulu Dodde, Deputy Commissioner, said, "We did a fast investigation and from the side of district administration, we are providing all the help to them (rape survivor and husband). Under the victim compensation scheme, we have given them ₹ 10 lakh. We will try for a speedy trial and conviction of the accused."
The victim's husband accepted the compensation and thanked the state police for the swift investigation into the case. The victim's husband said, "Thank you for the very fast investigation."

A woman from Spain was allegedly gang-raped in Jharkhand's Dumka district, police said on Saturday.
Three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident and a manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining accused, they said.
The incident took place at Kurumahat in Hansdiha police station area, around 300 km from state capital Ranchi, on Friday night when a tourist couple from Spain was spending the night at a makeshift tent.
The couple had reached Dumka from Bangladesh on a two-wheeler and was en route to Bihar and then Nepal.
"Superintendent of Police Pitamber Singh Kherwar himself went to the spot last night and is still camping there. Investigation is underway, and forensic teams have visited the spot.
"Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident and a manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining accused. An SIT (special investigation team) will be formed. All necessary legal action will be taken," a senior official told PTI on condition of anonymity.
The survivor has been admitted to a hospital, the official added.
Deputy Inspector General, Santhal Pargana, Sanjeev Kumar said the SP is probing the incident.
"I have asked the SP to issue a media statement in this regard," Kumar told PTI.
Meanwhile, another official, on condition of anonymity, said seven to eight local youths were involved in the incident.
The official said a massive manhunt is on to nab the culprits.
Incidentally, the alleged crime occurred on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Jharkhand and had expressed serious concerns over deteriorating law and order and extortion in the state.
Hitting out at the ruling dispensation in the state, the prime minister had alleged in a rally that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is neck-deep in corruption and its appeasement policies have resulted in infiltration.
"JMM stands for 'Jam Kar Khao'. Appeasement is on the rise, extortion is at its peak... law and order has taken a back seat," the PM had said.

A 24-year-old woman admitted to the ICU of a private hospital was allegedly raped by a nursing assistant in Rajasthan's Alwar district on Tuesday, police said.
Shivaji Park Station House Officer (SHO) Rajpal Singh said the woman was admitted to the hospital due to a lung infection and was undergoing treatment in the ICU. The accused, Chirag Yadav, allegedly raped her around 4 am, he said.
The survivor also alleged that the accused administered her an injection when she raised an alarm, following which she fell unconscious, the SHO added.
Singh said the woman gained consciousness after her husband called her on mobile. She then narrated the ordeal to her family.
"We have detained the accused and he is being interrogated. We have also examined CCTV footage in which he is seen going to the bed and covering it with curtains," he said.
An FIR has been lodged and a probe is underway, the SHO said.

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by a tea stall owner and three minors after a woman lured her to a secluded spot in Delhi's Sadar Bazaar, police said on Sunday.
Police said that all five accused, including the three minors, have been nabbed.
Sharing information about the incident, officials said that the accused woman was a customer at the man's tea stall in Old Delhi's Sadar Bazaar. While the three boys, aged 12, 14, and 15 years, were workers at the stall.
On January 1, the tea stall owner asked the woman, who worked as a rag-picker, to lure a girl to the area in exchange for some money.
The next day, the woman met the 12-year-old girl, another rag-picker, and told her to collect garbage from the roof of a building in Khurshid Market.
When the girl reached the area, the four accused waiting for her took turns raping her inside a temporary structure, police said.
The accused later threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident, they said.
The girl returned to her home in North West Delhi and kept quiet for two days. On January 5, when she returned to Sadar Bazaar to pick up garbage, where she told about her ordeal to her cousin who lives in the area.
The cousin informed her parents, who in turn approached the police and lodged a complaint.
Following the complaint, a case under section 376 (D) of the IPC, and also under section 6 of the POCSO Act has been registered.
All accused persons have been arrested/apprehended, and further proceedings into the case were on, the police added.

'Little bit of Rohypnol': British home secretary under fire for joking about date rape drug

British Home Secretary James Cleverly was under fire Sunday for joking about date rape just hours after announcing plans to crack down on what he had dubbed a &ldquo;perverse&rdquo; offence.
Cleverly, who oversees national security and law enforcement in England and Wales, faced a call to step down after he reportedly joked at an event at the prime minister's home about drugging his wife.
He told women guests at a Dec 18 reception that the secret to a long marriage was having a spouse who &ldquo;is always mildly sedated so she can never realise there are better men out there,&rdquo; the Sunday Mirror newspaper reported.
Cleverly said "a little bit of Rohypnol" &mdash; the so-called date rape drug &mdash; "in her drink every night&rdquo; was &ldquo;not really illegal if it's only a little bit&rdquo;.
The drug, colloquially known as a roofie when it is crushed and put into someone's beverage without their knowledge, makes the subject drowsy and can lead to unconsciousness and memory loss.
Cleverly apologised through a spokesperson for what he called an &ldquo;ironic joke&rdquo; after he had announced the Conservative government planned to update legislation to make clear that such drink spiking is illegal. He described the practice as a &ldquo;perverse&rdquo; crime.

Conversations at such events are typically off the record, but the Sunday Mirror said it decided to report the news because of Cleverly's position and the subject matter.

Jemima Olchawski, chief executive of the women's rights group the Fawcett Society said the remarks were &ldquo;sickening,&rdquo; and she called on Cleverly to resign.
&ldquo;How can we trust him to seriously address violence against women and girls?&rdquo; Olchawski said in a statement. &ldquo;It's sickening that the senior minister in charge of keeping women safe thinks that something as terrifying as drugging women is a laughing matter.&rdquo; Cleverly, 54, who met his wife in college and has two children, previously described tackling violence against women and girls as a personal priority.
Senior members of the opposition Labour Party condemned the &ldquo;appalling&rdquo; comments.
&ldquo;It is truly unbelievable that the home secretary made such appalling jokes on the very same day the government announced new policy on spiking,&rdquo; Yvette Cooper, a Labour member of Parliament, said. "Victims will understandably be questioning if they can trust him to take this vile crime seriously.&rdquo; The government has pledged to clarify that drink spiking is a crime while stopping short of making it a specific offence.
Police in England and Wales receive an average of 561 reports of spiking a month, mainly by women who report incidents at bars and nightclubs, according to a Home Office report.&nbsp;

A nine-year-old girl was allegedly abducted, raped and then murdered by her 52-year-old landlord, who dumped her body in a canal in outer Delhi's Swaroop Nagar, police said on Tuesday.
The police have launched a search to recover the girl's body.
The victim's family has demanded capital punishment for the accused, who has been arrested. The locals and her family members staged a protest in their locality to demand justice.
The accused had allegedly lured the girl on the pretext of giving her a car ride on December 12 while she was playing outside her residence, police said.
According to the investigators, the accused then took her to an isolated area where he allegedly raped her in his car. To hide his crime, he strangled her and then dumped her body in Munak Canal around 6.30 pm.
The accused, who stays in the same locality in Nangli Puna village in a separate house a few metres away, returned to his house around 7.30 pm.
The victim's family had been staying at the rented accommodation for nearly a year. After the girl went missing on December 12, the police were informed and they began scanning the CCTV footage of the area and they developed a suspicion regarding the accused.
"According to the CCTV footage, we got to know that the girl was kidnapped from near a closed godown. The family members identified the man, who was taking her with him as their landlord," said a police officer.
When the police reached the house of the accused for an investigation, they got to know that he had met with an accident on December 15 when he was on a scooter.
"He was taken to a hospital in Rohini. After getting information, a team from the police station also reached the spot. But the doctors told the police team that he had multiple fractures and won't be able to give his statement. A team was deputed at the hospital to keep a strict vigil on the accused," said a senior police officer.
On December 17, the doctors declared him fit for statement and the accused confessed his crime during interrogation. He told the police that he had abducted the girl, took her to some isolated place where he raped her.
"During interrogation, the accused told the police that he was in fear after committing the crime and thus he killed her by strangulating her. On Tuesday, we took the accused to the crime scene. Total six divers have been pressed into service to fish out the body of the victim which has still not been traced," said the police officer.
The accused's previous antecedents are being checked, the officer added.
The victim's parents work in a factory as labourers and live in a rented accommodation.
"My daughter was playing outside our house when he kidnapped her. He must be hanged to death for his act," the victim's father told PTI.
An FIR has been registered under sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting in order to murder), 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police said.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has taken suo-moto cognisance of the case and issued a notice to the SHO of the Swaroop Nagar police station demanding a copy of the FIR registered in the matter along with details of the accused arrested in the case.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal has sought a detailed action taken report by December 22.
According to latest National Records Crime Bureau (NRCB) data, 315 boys and 260 girls in the 6-12 age group were kidnapped in 2022, while 66 boys and 45 girls were kidnapped in the 0-6 age group.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court has agreed to examine whether or not a woman can be booked in a rape case

Women are usually the victims of rape but can a woman be booked in a rape case? The Supreme Court has agreed to examine this question after a woman petitioned it for anticipatory bail in a rape case also involving her son.
The apex court has asked the Punjab government to respond to the plea filed by a 61-year-old woman who has been implicated in the case filed by her daughter-in-law.
While agreeing to examine the issue, a bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Sanjay Karol granted the woman protection from arrest and directed her to cooperate with the investigation.
"Issue notice, returnable in four weeks. In the meantime, the petitioner is protected from arrest. But she is expected to cooperate with the investigation of the crime," the bench said.
At the outset, advocate Rishi Malhotra, who appeared for the woman, argued that all other penal sections in the FIR are bailable barring the charge under Section 376(2)(n) IPC (repeated rape). Conviction under the section entails imprisonment of not less than 10 years and may extend to sentence for life.
Referring to an apex court judgement, Malhotra submitted a woman cannot be charged with rape.
According to the case, the complainant was initially in a long-distance relationship with the US-based elder son of the woman, a widow, but they had never met in person.
The FIR states that the complainant started living with the widow after entering into wedlock with her son at a virtual marriage ceremony.
Later, the younger son of the widow visited them from Portugal. The widow has claimed that after the arrival of her younger son the complainant and her family pressured her to end the informal marriage with her elder son. When the younger son was about to leave for Portugal, the complainant insisted that he take her along but he left alone.
As tension mounted between the two families, a compromise was arrived at and the widow gave the complainant Rs 11 lakh for ending the marriage with her elder son.
The complainant then approached the local police and lodged an FIR against the widow and her younger son, accusing them of rape and other charges.&nbsp;

Raped when she was 11-year-old, survivor says 'happily married', SC reduces convict's sentence 

The FIR in the case was lodged on October 22, 1996, by the parents of the victim when she had become pregnant and the accused and his wife had offered Rs 10,000 to facilitate her abortion.

The Supreme Court has reduced the sentence of a man convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl noting her statement that she is happily married and not interested in pursuing the matter further.
A bench of Justices B R Gavai, P S Narasimha and Aravind Kumar maintained the conviction of the man under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
In this case, the trial court in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh had acquitted the appellant. However, the state government filed an appeal and the High Court reversed the acquittal and convicted the man and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for life.
The convict had moved the apex court against the Madhya Pradesh High Court judgment.
The top court said though the minimum sentence to be awarded was seven years, discretion is vested with the court which may impose a sentence of imprisonment for a term of less than seven years.
"The prosecutrix has also appeared in the matter through the counsel. She has stated that she is happily married and is not interested in pursuing the matter further. The appellant has already undergone a sentence of more than five years," the bench said.
The top court said taking into consideration the facts and circumstances of the present case "we maintain the conviction under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. However, we find that the sentence already undergone will be sufficient to subserve the ends of justice." The convict had moved the apex court against the Madhya Pradesh High Court judgment which had said that the man had exploited the victim taking advantage of her poverty.
"The respondent was the guardian of the prosecutrix; his wife has undertaken to educate her and to bring her up. The respondent-accused has exploited the victim taking advantage of her poverty and the fact that his wife has given refuge to the victim for the purposes of education when she was still a student of Class 11th. He has violated her by breach of that confidence," the high court had said.

A minor girl was allegedly raped by a police sub-inspector in Rajasthan's Dausa district on Friday, police said.
The incident took place in the Lalsot area when accused sub-inspector Bhupendra Singh lured the victim to his room in the afternoon and raped her, ASP Ramchandra Singh Nehra said. He said that the accused has been taken into custody and is being interrogated. &nbsp;Meanwhile, Dausa SP Vandita Rana said, &ldquo;The exact age of the victim girl will be determined after a medical examination and based on the report of the victim's family members.&rdquo; The estimated age of the girl is around four to five years, she added.
Local residents in large numbers gheraoed the Rahuwas police station shouting slogans against the police. &nbsp;BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena also went to the spot. &nbsp; &ldquo;There is a huge anger among the people over the incident of rape of a seven-year-old Dalit girl by a policeman in Lalsot. I have reached the spot to get justice to the innocent child,&rdquo; Meena said. He further said, &ldquo;The police, which has become autocratic due to the incompetence of the Ashok Gehlot government, is not desisting from committing atrocities even on a sensitive occasion like elections.&rdquo;

A student of IIT-BHU was allegedly molested and stripped by three motorcycle-borne men, who also recorded a video of the act, near her hostel, police said on Thursday.
Hundreds of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) students held a protest on Thursday. They claimed outside elements were involved in the incident and demanded that outsiders be banned from entering the campus.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the government over the incident and asked if it was no longer possible for a woman student in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's parliamentary constituency to walk fearlessly inside her own educational institution.
According to a complaint lodged by the woman, she went out of her hostel with a friend on Wednesday night. They were near the Karman Baba temple when three men came there on a motorcycle, forcibly took her to a corner and gagged her after separating her from her friend.
The accused then stripped the woman, made a video of her and clicked photos. They let her go after 15 minutes and took her phone number, the complaint stated.
On the basis of the woman's complaint, an FIR has been registered under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under provisions of the IT Act at Lanka police station, police said.

Efforts are being made to identify the accused, they said.
Students gathered near IIT-BHU's Rajputana Hostel and protested against the incident.
They held placards with messages like "We want justice", "Are we safe?" and "Why is the director silent?". They also raised slogans against the institute's director and demanded that he come and speak with them.
The protesting students alleged that incidents of molestation have become common and women students are not safe on the campus. They also raised questions about the security arrangements on the campus and claimed that security guards are not present at several places.
Police personnel have been deployed at the spot to ensure law and order.
After the incident, IIT-BHU Registrar Rajan Srivastava issued directions that all barricades around the campus premises should be put in place from 10 pm to 5 am to ensure a safe environment for all employees and students of the institute.
The security guard on night duty will only allow vehicles with BHU stickers and people with BHU identity cards to enter the premises, he said.
In a post on X, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asked if top institutions like IITs are not safe now.
"A woman student of IIT, BHU has been sexually assaulted in Varanasi. Some time back, the woman student was subjected to heart-wrenching violence on the university campus. The brazen attackers have also made a video of the incident. IIT students are protesting against the incident," the Congress general secretary said in Hindi.
"Are BHU campuses and even top institutions like IITs not safe now? Is it no longer possible for a woman student in the prime minister's constituency to walk fearlessly inside her own educational institution," she asked.
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal termed the incident "shameful".
"This incident raises serious questions about the safety of thousands of women studying at the university. Such an incident taking place on the campus of a prestigious university like BHU is a failure of the entire administration," Maliwal said in a post on X.&nbsp;

&nbsp;A delivery executive of an e-commerce firm accused of raping a customer inside her apartment was arrested on Sunday after a gunfight with police near Noida, officials said.
Sumit Sharma was taken into custody from Khairpur village earlier in the day but escaped after snatching a policeman's pistol. A few hours later, he was caught by police following an encounter, they said.
Sharma was booked for raping the 19-year-old woman on Friday after finding her alone in her apartment in Supertech Ecovillage Society in Noida Extension, where he had gone to deliver an order, police said.
Additional DCP (Central Noida) Hridesh Katheria said an FIR was lodged against Sharma on Saturday at the local Bisrakh police station under sections 376 (sexual assault), 323 (causing hurt), and 506 (criminal intimidation), among others of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
"Eight police teams were formed to ensure the arrest of the accused. Today, on the basis of a tip-off, he was held from Khairpur village. However, when he was being brought to Bisrakh police station, he snatched the pistol of a policeman and managed to escape," Katheria said.
"Soon, other police teams were alerted and a combing operation was launched. When found again by a police team, the accused opened fire on them, prompting retaliatory action in which he suffered a gunshot on his leg and was taken in custody once again," the officer said.
Sharma is a resident of Achcheja village in Gautam Buddh Nagar. While his brother is a local history-sheeter, he too had criminal tendencies, according to police.
The accused has been taken to hospital for treatment and further legal proceedings were being carried out, police said.&nbsp;

NDTV reported that the girl was eventually taken in by a priest after she reached an ashram. The priest suspecting sexual assault took her to a hospital where a medical examination confirmed rape.&nbsp;
The girl was rushed to Indore due to the serious nature of her injuries. NDTV reported that the police personnel stepped up when she required blood. Her condition is now reportedly stable.&nbsp;

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal issued the orders after the bureaucrat was booked for rape on August 20.&nbsp;
The girl was staying with the accused and his family after her father passed away on October 1, 2020.
The accused had allegedly raped the girl several times between November 2020 and January 2021, a senior police officer said, adding his wife has also been charged with giving her medicine to terminate the pregnancy.
Responding to the allegation against the official, the Delhi government said "the sternest possible action should be taken against him" if found guilty.
"He (the accused) is a deputy director in the WCD Department. Since an FIR has been lodged in the alleged matter, the law should take its course. The Delhi government is sensitive in regard to such serious matters of women's safety and child abuse. If he has committed any such reprehensible act, the sternest possible action should be taken against him," the government said in a statement.
The matter involving the official and his wife came to light when the girl, who is now in Class 12, recently narrated the incident to a counsellor at a hospital where she was admitted following an anxiety attack, the police officer said.
The girl was staying with the accused and his family at their house after her father passed away on October 1, 2020. The accused used this opportunity to allegedly sexually assault her several times, the officer added.
When the minor allegedly became pregnant, she informed the wife of the accused who later asked her son to get medicines for pregnancy termination and gave them to the girl, the officer said.
The girl returned home with her mother in January 2021 when she came to meet her. She had an anxiety attack in August this year and her mother admitted her to St Stephen's hospital, where the girl narrated the whole incident during the counselling session, the officer added.
Later, the hospital informed the Burari police station here and a case was registered against the accused under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said.
Police said the case was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 376(2)(f)(being a relative, guardian or teacher of, or a person in a position of trust or authority towards the woman, commits rape on such woman), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to outrage the modesty of a woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 313 (causing miscarriage without women's consent), 120B ( (criminal conspiracy) and provisions of the POCSO Act.
The girl's statement is yet to be recorded before the magistrate, the police officer said, adding that an inquiry is being conducted into the matter.

Police said after the death of her father, she started living with a family friend, her guardian. She was sexually harassed, molested and repeatedly raped by the uncle under whose care and guardianship she was staying at his house, they said.
"She averred having undergone termination of pregnancy by the perpetrator and his wife. A medicolegal examination has been done. The investigation is in progress," police said.
The survivor is still recovering and is under care, they added.&nbsp;

A teacher of a government school was arrested for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl, studying in Class 4 in the same school in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district, a police official said Sunday.
The incident occurred under Sohagi police station limits in the district on Saturday.
When the minor girl reached her school, the accused teacher took her to a corner of the school and violated her.
After the incident, the girl reached her home crying and she narrated the whole incident to her family members. On hearing about the incident, the kin got furious, they along with the girl immediately reached the women's police station in the district and lodged a complaint against the accused teacher.
Mauganj Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Vivek Kumar Lal said, "A 10-yearold girl reached Mahila police station and lodged a complaint that she was molested by her teacher at the school. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case under IPC section 376 AB (Punishment for rape on woman under twelve years of age) and relevant sections of POCSO Act."
"After that the police launched a search operation and arrested the accused teacher. Further investigation into the matter is underway," Additional SP Lal added.
Recently, a 30-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping and killing a sevenyear-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior district.
The incident occurred in Dubahi village under Karahiya police station in the district on Monday night, February 6. The accused is identified as Sheru Jatav (30), a resident of the same village. The accused Jatav abducted the girl, and after committing the crime, the accused hid the body of the minor in a farm, police said.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Jai Raj Kuber said, "There was a wedding function of a girl of the village on Monday, February 6. The minor also went there to see the wedding procession but she did not return to her home for a long time. As a result of which the family members searched her in nearby locations but could not find her whereabouts."
"After that the family members had a doubt about the accused Sheru and lodged a complaint of kidnapping against him at the police station. Acting on the complaint, the police launched the search operation and caught the accused on the next day. But he kept misleading the police. When the police strictly questioned the accused, he confessed to the crime," ASP Kuber said.

A special POCSO court here on Friday sentenced a 39-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for repeatedly raping his minor stepdaughter and making her pregnant.

The girl told the court that her stepfather sexually assaulted her multiple times in 2016 when she was 16 years old and threatened to harm her if she revealed anything to anyone.
Her mother told the court that the man had stopped working and would indulge in alcohol and drugs. She said that she had seen him molesting her daughters and that he had been warned about that.
However, In July 2016, the family learnt that the girl was three months pregnant, the mother told the court. Later, she filed a case against the man at Shivajinagar police station in Mumbai.
Public prosecutor Veena Shelar said the court relied on a DNA report, testimonies of nine witnesses, including the girl and her mother, and medical experts to convict the man
