Ravichandran Ashwin discussed about that incident in detail with Shastri on his YouTube channel.
In the viral video, Ashwin revealed: "I still remember this conversation you had with Rishabh in Chennai when we were playing the Test. He (Pant) is a very unique character, a unique guy, he's very special. He kept tonking (England spinner) Jack Leach over the top. Former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri feels the fan backlash towards Hardik Pandya could have been avoided had Mumbai Indians shown "clarity in communication" while announcing him as captain.
Shastri also advised Pandya to stay calm and weather the storm with solid performances.
"This is not the Indian cricket team that's playing. This is franchise cricket. They have paid top dollar. They are the bosses. It's their entitlement as to who they want as captain. Okay, where I think this could have been handled better was with more clarity in communication," Shastri told Star Sports' 'Cricket Live Show'.
"If you wanted Hardik Pandya as captain, then say that we are looking at the future. We are looking to build. Rohit has done a fabulous job, as everyone knows, and we want him to help out Hardik in these next three years as the team progresses.
"That communication, that clarity should have come out a little more for all this to die down. So it's not a case of you saying, 'No, we don't want Rohit Sharma,' or 'He was treated badly,' and all the things that are coming out in social media," he added.
Shastri expects the tide to turn once Mumbai Indians start winning. The team is currently on a three-match losing streak.
"So, my advice to Hardik would be to be calm, patient, ignore, and just focus on your game. Get a couple of performances going. Mumbai Indians is a terrific side. If they get on a roll, they win three or four matches on the trot, everything will subside," he said.
"At the end of the day, nothing beats results. You win matches, and things will change. There's a lot of bull crap out there as well. You know, and some of the stories are just planted. A lot of it is just planted on other people's names, including my name," he added.
Former Australia batter Matthew Hayden also felt that fans' affection for Rohit is understandable given his 11-year tenure as MI captain.
"See the fans are the biggest stakeholders in this and they often don't have the politics, the insights, but they want to understand this, they love Rohit Sharma. There's going to be no getting around that.
"So potentially how it could have been handled little bit differently is to ensure that Rohit is on board with it...," he said.
Hayden said its is not fair to judge Pandya based on just three matches.
"...there are some concerns in and around Hardik's leadership but I think it's grossly unfair to look at the start of the season which is notoriously slow for the Mumbai Indians, and judge one of the iconic cricketers in India and will be for a long time to come as well, subject to his own fitness which is always vulnerable being an all-rounder as he is.
"But it's grossly unfair to misjudge his performances so far, and the team&rsquo;s performances and then speculate around what is and what isn't happening inside that changing room which we don't know," he observed.
MI will next play on April 7 against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede stadium.

The 25-year-old Kishan did not turn up for Jharkhand throughout the team's campaign in Ranji Trophy despite not being on national duty since leaving from the tour of South Africa in December last, citing personal reasons.
He has instead focussed on preparing for the IPL next month.
Iyer did not make himself available for Mumbai's Ranji quarterfinal against Baroda after being excluded from the Indian team following the second Test against England.
He, however, has been picked for the Ranji semifinals starting March 2.
Lauding the board, Shastri said, "Big applause to @BCCI and @JayShah for the game-changing move with 'fast bowling' contracts. A crucial step in gearing up for Down Under later this year. Meanwhile, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar too praised the BCCI for rewarding players who are willing to put in the hard yards in the Test format.

While announcing the central contracts, the BCCI once again advised all the Indian cricketers to play domestic games when not on national duty.
The exclusion of Iyer and Kishan can be seen as a stern message to young players unwilling to put in the hard yards in first-class cricket, while chasing white-ball glory and lucrative IPL contracts.

Shastri insisted that cricket is slowly going football's way and in future the players would only be interested in playing world events.
"I have always said that the bilateral cricket will suffer, there is no question about that. With the leagues spreading around the world, it's going to go the football way," Shastri was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'.
"The teams will assemble just before the World Cup, they play a little bit of bilateral, clubs will release the players and you play the mega World Cup. So it's going to go that way in the long run whether you like it or not.
"I don't feel bad at all," said the former India all-rounder, adding: "one of the faculties of the game will suffer. I think it will be 50-over cricket." A trend has already started where many international cricketers are preferring club over country. And Shastri admitted that he won't be surprised to see the trend growing in coming time.
"Look at the volume of people in this country, we are 1.4 billion, and only 11 can play for India," Shastri said.
"What will the others do? They have an opportunity to play white-ball cricket, it's their strength, globally, across different franchises in the world. Grab that opportunity. It's common sense, it's their living. It's their income. Nobody will be able to deprive them of this. They (players) are not contracted by BCCI. What stops them going? "Nothing like getting exposure. How much do they want to protect their own league (IPL)? You've got to see where they come from, and rightly so. This is our league and to protect this league is paramount as far as our interest goes. But by letting certain players go, it's not going to affect the league in any way."&nbsp;

"For One-day cricket to survive, I think it should be reduced to 40-over game in future," said the former India captain on day four of the fourth India-Australia Test on Sunday.
Shastri said the game should address the diminishing attention span of spectators and pointed out that when the Kapil Dev-led India won the ODI World Cup in 1983, it was a 60-over-a-side tournament before it was reduced to a 50-over affair.
The former player also added that Test cricket will continue to enjoy its pride of place as it was the "real thing".
