Kohli (5 off 29), unable to resist the cover drive, was caught at slip after an angled delivery from Mitchell Starc.
By lunchtime, India was struggling at 33 for 3, with hopes of a win fading fast. KL Rahul failed to score, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, though surviving longer, could only muster 14 runs off 83 deliveries.
This cautious approach reflected India&rsquo;s diminishing chances of victory. Earlier in the day, Jasprit Bumrah had completed a remarkable 13th five-wicket haul in Test cricket, helping India dismiss Australia for 234 in their second innings.

Rohit missed the opening Test Down Under to be with his family for the birth of his second child. He was expected to reclaim the opener&rsquo;s spot but KL Rahul&rsquo;s impressive 77 in India&rsquo;s win at Perth prompted a rejig of the batting order with Rohit moving down to No.6.
The change though has not been fruitful for Rohit as he has managed 10, 3 and 6 runs in the last three innings, while Rahul has encashed on the opportunity by notching up a fine 84 in the first innings at Brisbane in the third Test.
&ldquo;I would like to see Rohit Sharma, his tactics change a bit because he can still be extremely dangerous at that number (six),&rdquo; Shastri opined on ICC Review.
&ldquo;I think he&rsquo;s got to be very clear in his mindset to go out there and take the attack to the opposition and not worry about anything else,&rdquo; the cricketer-turned-commentator added.
Shastri felt Rohit should shun the defensive mindset.
&ldquo;The last thing you want is him to be in two minds whether to defend or attack. In his case, it should be an attack. He picks up length quickly, he should take the opposition on at that number.
&ldquo;Because if he gets away in the first 10-15 minutes, in any way, he&rsquo;s not got past that 15-20 minutes, half an hour. So why don&rsquo;t you play a natural game, go and take the attack to the opposition and take it from there?&rdquo;
Shastri felt it&rsquo;s the best way for Rohit to get back into form and win games for India, adding that the best No.6 batters in the world are those who have the ability to counter-attack.
&ldquo;I think that is his best way of not just coming back into form, winning a game for India as well. Because that number is a crucial number.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The best No. 6s in the world are the guys who know how to have the ability to counter-attack. They read the situation well. Yes, if a lot of wickets have fallen, maybe for a little while. You might have to be circumspect, but the intent has to be far sooner than later.
&ldquo;Especially when you have that kind of ability and especially when you open the batting for India and you have all the shots for Australian conditions.&rdquo;
Rohit had made his Test debut in 2013 at No. 6 position, marking the occasion with a century.
Shastri backed Rahul to retain the opener&rsquo;s slot in the fourth Test following his two half-centuries so far in the five-Test series.
&ldquo;I would have asked him (Rohit) to open in the last Test match (Brisbane) but then the way Rahul has batted, he was a joy to watch and the way he&rsquo;s batting, I believe he struck a purple patch,&rdquo; Shastri said.
&ldquo;It could be a position he might just want to keep and enhance the way he&rsquo;s playing because his technique was faultless,&rdquo; said Shastri.
The former India captain said Rahul was currently at the top of his game and his confidence level too was very high.
&ldquo;The way he left the ball, the way he allowed the ball to come onto the bat, some of his cover drives were as good as any played by anyone in world cricket at the moment. And so I think when there&rsquo;s that much confidence there, you know, let it be.&rdquo;

Shastri also advised Pandya to stay calm and weather the storm with solid performances.
"This is not the Indian cricket team that's playing. This is franchise cricket. They have paid top dollar. They are the bosses. It's their entitlement as to who they want as captain. Okay, where I think this could have been handled better was with more clarity in communication," Shastri told Star Sports' 'Cricket Live Show'.
"If you wanted Hardik Pandya as captain, then say that we are looking at the future. We are looking to build. Rohit has done a fabulous job, as everyone knows, and we want him to help out Hardik in these next three years as the team progresses.
"That communication, that clarity should have come out a little more for all this to die down. So it's not a case of you saying, 'No, we don't want Rohit Sharma,' or 'He was treated badly,' and all the things that are coming out in social media," he added.
Shastri expects the tide to turn once Mumbai Indians start winning. The team is currently on a three-match losing streak.
"So, my advice to Hardik would be to be calm, patient, ignore, and just focus on your game. Get a couple of performances going. Mumbai Indians is a terrific side. If they get on a roll, they win three or four matches on the trot, everything will subside," he said.
"At the end of the day, nothing beats results. You win matches, and things will change. There's a lot of bull crap out there as well. You know, and some of the stories are just planted. A lot of it is just planted on other people's names, including my name," he added.
Former Australia batter Matthew Hayden also felt that fans' affection for Rohit is understandable given his 11-year tenure as MI captain.
"See the fans are the biggest stakeholders in this and they often don't have the politics, the insights, but they want to understand this, they love Rohit Sharma. There's going to be no getting around that.
"So potentially how it could have been handled little bit differently is to ensure that Rohit is on board with it...," he said.
Hayden said its is not fair to judge Pandya based on just three matches.
"...there are some concerns in and around Hardik's leadership but I think it's grossly unfair to look at the start of the season which is notoriously slow for the Mumbai Indians, and judge one of the iconic cricketers in India and will be for a long time to come as well, subject to his own fitness which is always vulnerable being an all-rounder as he is.
"But it's grossly unfair to misjudge his performances so far, and the team&rsquo;s performances and then speculate around what is and what isn't happening inside that changing room which we don't know," he observed.
MI will next play on April 7 against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede stadium.

The 25-year-old Kishan did not turn up for Jharkhand throughout the team's campaign in Ranji Trophy despite not being on national duty since leaving from the tour of South Africa in December last, citing personal reasons.
He has instead focussed on preparing for the IPL next month.
Iyer did not make himself available for Mumbai's Ranji quarterfinal against Baroda after being excluded from the Indian team following the second Test against England.
He, however, has been picked for the Ranji semifinals starting March 2.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri believes the mushrooming T20 leagues around the world will eventually hurt bilateral cricket, especially the ODI format with the franchises inclined towards handing long-term contract to players.
Shastri insisted that cricket is slowly going football's way and in future the players would only be interested in playing world events.
"I have always said that the bilateral cricket will suffer, there is no question about that. With the leagues spreading around the world, it's going to go the football way," Shastri was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'.
"The teams will assemble just before the World Cup, they play a little bit of bilateral, clubs will release the players and you play the mega World Cup. So it's going to go that way in the long run whether you like it or not.
"I don't feel bad at all," said the former India all-rounder, adding: "one of the faculties of the game will suffer. I think it will be 50-over cricket." A trend has already started where many international cricketers are preferring club over country. And Shastri admitted that he won't be surprised to see the trend growing in coming time.
"Look at the volume of people in this country, we are 1.4 billion, and only 11 can play for India," Shastri said.
"What will the others do? They have an opportunity to play white-ball cricket, it's their strength, globally, across different franchises in the world. Grab that opportunity. It's common sense, it's their living. It's their income. Nobody will be able to deprive them of this. They (players) are not contracted by BCCI. What stops them going? "Nothing like getting exposure. How much do they want to protect their own league (IPL)? You've got to see where they come from, and rightly so. This is our league and to protect this league is paramount as far as our interest goes. But by letting certain players go, it's not going to affect the league in any way."&nbsp;
