When asked about the Indian team without Pujara, Rahane, and Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit had a brief slip of the tongue during the post-match press conference. "No, no, absolutely [I will miss them around]. Look, they have so much experience and have won so many matches for India. So, when you look around and they're not there... By the way, Ajinkya Rahane hasn't retired, aap mere ko marwaoge yar [you guys are going to get me in trouble]," Rohit remarked, laughing.
Rohit further clarified that the doors for Pujara and Rahane to return to the Test team are still open. "I&rsquo;m speaking as if all three have retired [chuckles]. Pujara hasn&rsquo;t announced his retirement. You mentioned all their names together, so I said that. They're not here right now, but I don&rsquo;t know, they can still come back, the door is open for them," he added.
Pujara and Rahane have been integral to India&rsquo;s middle order for over a decade. Pujara has played 103 Tests, accumulating 7,195 runs at an average of 43.60, with 19 centuries and 35 fifties. His highest score is 206*. Rahane, meanwhile, has featured in 85 Tests, scoring 5,077 runs at an average of 38.46, with 12 centuries and 26 fifties. His best score is 188.
However, both players&rsquo; performances have dipped significantly since India&rsquo;s historic victory at The Gabba in January 2021, which was pivotal to their series win in Australia. Since that iconic triumph, Pujara has played 22 more Tests, managing only 1,084 runs at a below-par average of 29.29, with just one century and seven fifties. Rahane's form has been similarly underwhelming, scoring only 606 runs in his last 16 Tests at an average of 22.44, with four half-centuries.
Despite his recent struggles in Tests, Rahane had a standout performance in IPL 2023 with Chennai Super Kings, scoring 326 runs in 11 innings at an impressive average of 32.60 and a strike rate of 172.48. His strong IPL form could potentially keep him in the mix longer than Pujara, who hasn&rsquo;t played in the IPL since 2014.
Pujara, however, has an exceptional first-class record, having scored 19,812 runs in 258 matches at an average of 52.00, including 61 centuries and 77 half-centuries, with a highest score of 352. His impressive domestic form keeps him in the conversation for a Test return, should the opportunity arise.

Ashwin's longtime India teammate Virat Kohli penned an emotional tribute and recalled their "14 years of camaraderie", current coach Gautam Gambhir hailed his influence on future generations, and Ajinkya Rahane reminisced how his every ball felt like a wicket-taking delivery.
"I've played with you for 14 years and when you told me today you're retiring, it made me a bit emotional and the flashbacks of all those years playing together came to me," Kohli posted in X.
Ashwin, 38, announced his decision during the press meet in Gabba that happened after the third Test between India and Australia ended in a draw.
Earlier in the day, Kohli was seen embracing the off-spinner following a lengthy conversation in the dressing room as Ashwin wiped his eyes, sparking speculations on his retirement.
"I've enjoyed every bit of the journey with you ash, your skill and match winning contributions to Indian cricket are second to none and you will always and always be remembered as a legend of Indian cricket," Kohli added.
With 765 international scalps in his bag, Ashwin is the second-highest wicket-taker from India after Anil Kumble.
Ashwin has taken 537 wickets at an average of 24 in 106 Test matches. He is also seventh on the overall list of wicket-takers.

The third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba ended in a rain-affected draw. Both teams remain tied at 1-1 in the series. The weather played a major role, impacting game strategy and execution.

India vs Australia: Gabba Test Drawn Amid Rain

Rain interruptions led to a drawn third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba, leaving the series balanced at 1-1 as teams gear up for the Boxing Day Test.

Bad light and rain forced an early tea break soon after with India at 8 for no loss in 2.1 overs. The rain got heavier as the time passed and no play was possible thereafter.

India escaped with a crucial draw in the weather-hit third Test against Australia after intermittent rain wiped out majority of play on day five, leaving the five-match series tantalisingly locked at 1-1.
Resuming the day at 252 for nine, India batted for 24 balls and were all out for 260 in their first innings.
With limited time left in the day to force a result after majority of the morning session was rained out, the Australian batters came out all guns blazing and stuttered to 89 for seven in 18 overs before making a brave declaration, giving India at least 54 overs to chase down 275.

The absorbing series is nicely poised going into the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
India would have fancied chasing 275 on day five but weather helped them immensely in the game controlled by Australia.
Jasprit Bumrah (3/18) was brilliant as usual in the second innings with Mohammed Siraj (2/36) and Akash Deep (2/28) offering good support.
Australia's approach in the second essay was brave and questionable at the same time.
Nathan McSweeney (4) and Marnus Labuschagne (1) went after balls outside the off-stump and perished while Usman Khawaja (8) and Mitchell Marsh (2) fell to good deliveries.
Wickets falling in a heap did not impact Australia's approach as they kept going for the big hits. Skipper Cummins chipped in with two sixes and as many fours before the declaration.
In the morning session, lightening and subsequent rain allowed only 24 balls to be bowled.
The warning of severe weather was flashed on the digital scoreboard at the Gabba shortly after India were bowled out for 260 in their first innings, handing Australia a lead of 185 runs.
Akash Deep (31) was the last man out, stumped off a Travis Head delivery, bringing an end to a 47-run stand with Jasprit Bumrah (10 not out).
The duo had done well to avoid the follow-on on day four.
Players were asked to remain in the dressing room and fans were requested to take shelter away from the fence after the visitors were all out.
The forecast was largely clear for Brisbane from Thursday onwards but the entire game has been adversely impacted by bad weather with rain forcing multiple stoppages for four out of five days.
Only day two of the game was not impacted by weather as Australia coasted to 405 for seven on the back of memorable hundreds from Head and Steve Smith.
Going into the fourth Test beginning December 26, India have major concerns in both batting and bowling department which they must address.
Barring K L Rahul, who has been India's standout batter on the tour, the star-studded line up has not found a way to negotiate the threats posed by the Australian pace attack.
Skipper Rohit Sharma has been woefully short of runs and after the hundred in Perth, superstar Virat Kohli has struggled with ball outside the off-stump.
Majority of the batters have been guilty of playing away from their bodies in challenging conditions. They will need to curb their white-ball instincts to make an impact at MCG.
On the bowling front too, it has been effectively a one man show with Jasprit Bumrah doing the heavy lifting in all the games.
Mohammed Siraj bowled in the Brisbane Test with a niggle, leaving a question mark over his fitness ahead of the Melbourne game.
Akash Deep, who played ahead of Harshit Rana, bowled well in the game but did not have a lot of luck, especially against Smith. He is expected to retain his place the eleven.
India have picked three different spinners in the first three Test. It remains to be seen what strategy they adopt for the Boxing Day Test.

Off-spinner R Ashwin announced his retirement from all formats of cricket on Wednesday, December 18.

India's premier off-spinner R Ashwin on Wednesday surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement with immediate effect in the middle of the Test series against Australia here.
Ashwin retires from the game as the second highest wicket-taker for India in Tests with 537 scalps in 106 games, leaving him only behind Anil Kumble (619 wickets). He will continue to play club cricket.
"I won't take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer," Ashwin said at the end of the drawn third Test here in a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma during which he declined to take any questions and left after making the announcement.

Ashwin's announcement came after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in a draw.
The 38-year-old played the day-night Test in Adelaide and picked up one wicket.

The evolution of batting in modern day is such that incredible power-hitting is slowly rendering the size of cricket stadiums irrelevant, world's premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said on Saturday, fearing that the trend could make the game pretty one-sided.
Ashwin's comment have come in the context of unreal totals being put up by teams in this year's IPL.
Sunrisers Hyderabad posted totals of 277 and 287 while scores of 250 have been surpassed by teams this season with liberal help from the extra batter in the form of Impact Substitutions.
"The stadiums built back in the day are not relevant in the modern day. The bats that were used back then were also used for gully cricket. With LED boards of the sponsors being used, the boundary has come in by 10 yards," Ashwin, one of the leading voices in global cricket, said during a promotional event for his IPL team Rajasthan Royals.
Ashwin feels that if the trend continues, the game will become very one sided in coming times.
"It is tilting too far on other side, which will make someone's misery your great time. Bowlers will need mental boost," the straight-talker said.
However Ashwin also firmly believes that a good bowler will find his footing and stand out among the pack with his innovations.
"Game shifts balance and you have to find answers. There's clear window to differentiate yourself," Ashwin said.
He is happy that Rajasthan Royals' bowling attack hasn't suffered a lot unlike some of the other teams even though he marvels at the ball striking abilities of the batters over time.
"If you look at the Industrial rate (average runs conceded by teams in IPL), we have gone for less. We defended 180 in Jaipur in one game which was huge," he said "But you are certainly marvelled at ball-striking. At the end of the day spectators come to watch fours and sixes," said India's second highest wicket-taker in Tests.
For someone with a very sharp sense of humour, Ashwin had a hilarious take on size of boundaries this season.
"The ground in Jaipur, the boundary is huge. When I saw that, Dhruv Jurel said:"Bhaiyya this is so big" and I told him "Dhruv, atleast let it be somewhere". Watching that, I felt at this stage of my career, I would need a bicycle to reach the (Sawai Man Singh) boundary.
"Then in the next stadium, I felt I could walk and the next I could run and then in one I felt if I spit my Chewing gum, it will cross the boundary rope for a six," said Ashwin.
The Royals' bowling coach Shane Bond summed it up aptly.
"For bowlers now, if you can bowl well, you can make a lot of money. Batting has evolved and bowling is catching up," the former New Zealand speedster said.

"I am indebted to Dhoni for the rest of my life for what he gave me," said Ashwin, who was felicitated by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association in a grand ceremony for his rare achievements.

Overwhelmed by emotion and filled with gratitude at being grandly feted for hitting the 500-wicket mark in Tests, Ravichandran Ashwin on Saturday recalled one man he would forever be "indebted to" for showing faith in a "nobody" 13 years ago -- his first IPL and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
With 516 scalps in 100 Tests, Ashwin is a bonafide superstar in Indian cricket, just second behind the great Anil Kumble in the list of top Indian wicket-takers in the five-day format.
But it was not the case back in 2008 when he was roped in as a local spinner by Chennai Super Kings. He did not get a game that year as the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan led their spin attack.
Dhoni flung the new ball to Ashwin in the 2011 IPL final against Royal Challengers Bangalore and the then rookie off-spinner made an impact in the fourth ball itself, dismissing an in-form Chris Gayle.
The same year he made his India debut under Dhoni, picking up the player of the match honours in the game against the West Indies in Delhi.
"In 2008 I met all the greats (in CSK dressing room) Mathew Hayden and MS Dhoni. I sat through (IPL) 2008. I was a nobody then, where am I to play in a team that had Muttiah Muralitharan," said Ashwin, who was felicitated by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association in a grand ceremony for his rare achievements, in a dipped-in-emotion voice.
"I am indebted to Dhoni for the rest of my life for what he gave me. He gave me an opportunity with the new ball to go head on with Chris Gayle and 17 years later Anil bhai would be talking about the same episode," he fondly recalled.
That magical Chepauk night for Chennai Super Kings was just a beginning for Ashwin. With several current and former stars paying tributes to him, Ashwin understandably felt overwhelmed.
"I don't generally search for words to express how I feel. I am truly humbled and grateful to be here," he quipped.
The 37-year-old Chennai man is among the finest thinkers of the game and he has found a way to constantly reinvent himself, resulting in a bagful of wickets in the longest format.
He described himself as argumentative but only in pursuit of new perspectives.
"Anil bhai and Rahul (Dravid) bhai briefly mentioned that it is very tough to win an argument with me. It is true because I believe argument is one of the greatest pathways to excellence.
"Argument is never with the person. It is always with the true learning that comes at the end of it," he said as Kumble watched on from the stage.
Ashwin also thanked a host of Tamil Nadu greats, who were in attendance, including his first First-Class captain S Badrinath and former batter S Sharath, who is now an India selector.
Ashwin, who is especially lethal against the left-handers, recalled how Sharath helped him become a better bowler against the southpaws.
"A lot of people spoke about how I tormented left-handers day in and day out. My first tryst with left handers, Mr S Sharath is sitting in the front. Someone told me if you are that good an off-spinner try and get this man out.
"I did get him out once, caught at slip and I played several more games with Sharath, he never got out to me again. That's the quality of the batter he was. I bowled to him a lot and hence became a far better bowler to the left-handers.
Such is Ashwin's commitment to Tamil Nadu and club cricket that till date he makes himself available for domestic events when he is not on national duty.
"This place has given me so much that I want to keep coming back here. People keep asking why do you want to go back.
"Tomorrow, I might not be alive but my soul will be hanging around this place. This is what this place means to me," added Ashwin.

Ashwin dethroned teammate Jasprit Bumrah from the top spot, who had become the first-ever Indian pacer to be ranked number 1 in Tests.

A nine-wicket haul in his 100th Test match helped Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin re-claim the top spot in the bowlers' list, while his captain Rohit Sharma was back in the top-10 at sixth in the batting charts of the latest ICC rankings on Wednesday.
Ashwin was at his best throughout the Dharamsala contest against England as the experienced right-armer picked up four wickets in the first innings and then a 36th five-wicket haul in the second innings as India cruised to a dominant triumph in the fifth and final Test of their series.
The big haul helped Ashwin move past teammate Jasprit Bumrah into the premier position that he previously held earlier this year, the ICC said in a statement.
Rohit, who smashed a hundred in Dharmsala, rose five places to sixth and within 108 rating points of No.1 ranked Test batter Kane Williamson.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (up two places to eighth) and Shubman Gill (up 11 spots to equal 20th) reached new career-best ratings following an excellent individual series against Ben Stokes' side.
Bumrah fell into a share of the second position with Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood following his six scalps in the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch.
Ashwin's teammate Kuldeep Yadav earned a new career-high rating and jumped 15 places to 16th overall on the latest rankings following his seven wickets and Player of the Match heroics against England.

In a society where an individual mostly thinks about one's own self, Rohit Sharma the leader stands out for his empathy and golden heart, which makes his teammates put their bodies on the line for him, feels Ashwin, who had to rush back to Chennai hours after he had taken his 500th Test wicket.
On his Tamil YouTube channel, Ashwin recollected the horrifying 48 hours of his life, which also stood out for camaraderie and brotherhood amongst teammates.
"I was crying in my room and as I wasn't picking calls and Rohit and Rahul (Dravid) bhai came to check on me and all I told them was I couldn't think clearly.
"I am a part of the XI and the game hangs in a balance and if I leave the squad, they will be left with 10 people against a full-strength squad. At the other end, I was thinking about the last time I spoke to my mother," an emotional Ashwin vividly recollected the incidents on that fateful evening in Rajkot.
"I just wanted to leave and see her and I asked the doctor how she was and if she was conscious. The doctor apparently told me she was not in a position to be seen and I was tearing up and searching for a flight and I couldnt get one," he spoke about his helplessness.
Ashwin later realised that what Rohit had done was unthinkable.
"Rajkot airport closes at 6 pm and there are no flights after that and I didn't know what to do. Rohit literally asked me to stop thinking, and leave to be there with my family, and he was trying to arrange a charter flight for me," Ashwin said.
He also thanked Cheteshwar Pujara, who came down from Ahmedabad to Rajkot and flew to Chennai with him.
But what actually left Ashwin emotional was how Rohit asked one of the team physios, Kamlesh Jain, to leave the Test match and fly with him to Chennai, so that he wasn't left alone with negative thoughts.
"Rohit asked Kamlesh, who is a good friend of mine to travel with me to Chennai and be with me. He was one of the two physios and I convinced him to stay there but when I went down the security check, Kamlesh was already waiting there," Ashwin said.
"It was Rohit who called Kamlesh and asked to come and be with me and check on me during this tough time. It was 9:30 pm and I was just gobsmacked, I couldn't even think about it and two people (Kamlesh and Pujara), they were the ones I could talk to here. What if I had no one to talk to at that moment," Ashwin said.
Ashwin said that had he been skipper, he would have done the same but wondered if he would have taken the pains to arrange a charter flight or ask a team support staff to check on a player? He doesn't think so.
"I just thought even if I were the captain, I would tell my player to go back home and there are no second thoughts about it, but will I call up people to check on him? I don't know. Unbelievable, and I saw an outstanding leader in Rohit that day," said Ashwin.
As a leader, Rohit's IPL achievements are on par with MS Dhoni but Ashwin believes that God has bigger plans for a human being of his kind.
"I can't quite put my finger on it as I have played under several captains and leaders but it is his good that has made him what he is today, he's won five IPL titles and is on par with Dhoni, and it's not an easy thing that Dhoni has done. He should get something bigger than all that, which God will give him," the 37-year-old said.
Ashwin literally choked when he said his respect for Rohit had grown following the gesture.
"In a selfish society, where man thinks about himself, thinking for someone else's wellbeing is a rarity. My respect for him grew tremendously after that. I already respect him as a leader, he backs player without a question till the last moment; not easy to do that." His final statement was a testimony to what place Rohit holds in the hearts of his teammates.
"He takes 10 steps for a player and a player can give his life for him," he said.

Hours after becoming only the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to take 500 Test wickets, Ashwin rushed back to his home in Chennai in the middle of the 3rd Test against England in Rajkot after coming to know that his mother had been hospitalised following a blackout.
"When I landed and got to the hospital, my mom was slipping in and out of consciousness, and the first thing she asked me was, 'Why did you come?' The next time she was conscious, she said, "I think you should go back because the Test match is happening," Ashwin told 'ESPNCricinfo' on the eve of his 100th Test.
The off-spinner emotionally recalled how his parents Ravichandran and Chitra worked their "backsides off" to help him realise their collective cricketing dream.
"The entire family is built on cricket and to facilitate my career. It hasn't been easy. It has been very hard on them. It's been a big roller-coaster for them - going through the emotions and ups and downs that I myself do," the 37-year-old said.
Ashwin, at times, did feel that the sport meant more to his family than him.
"I am in the second half of my thirties and my dad still watches a game like he would watch my first international game. It means a lot to them. Compared to what it means to them, it definitely means less to me.
"They have eliminated anything that comes in the way of my cricket. That has been the sole purpose of their lives ever since I can remember," he said.
Ashwin's father is an avid cricket-watcher and the former club cricketer is present even at the most nondescript grounds to watch TNCA first division league.
"It was as if I was living the dream my dad wanted to achieve. Imagine somebody wanted to become a cricketer (but doesn't). He gets married, he has a son.
"And he wants to live the dream through his son, and he does everything from teaching me, to taking notes from my classmates, to taking me to private tuitions to make sure I play the maximum possible amount of cricket while still finishing my education.
"And this lady (mother) coming from some other hamlet says, 'I support you because you couldn't become a cricketer. Let's support our son to become a cricketer. Let's work our backsides off'. And the father-in-law supports it, and then the sister-in-law supports it."

The five-match series will be played across Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamsala and Ashwin noted that most Indian players have not played Test cricket at these venues.
"There's never been a marquee Test series like this in five such venues before. In 2017, we played Australia in Dharamasala and Ranchi and then Pune and Bengaluru. Usually, if there is a 4-5 match Test series at least one or two happen in metro cities.
"Unlike that, this time it's happening in venues that weren't part of World Cup matches.
"For most of the Indian players, these venues are new. There are a lot of players playing in our team who haven't played a first-class or Test match in Vizag stadium.
"I'm not sure that is possible in any other country. But possible in India as there are so many Test venues.
"So the home familiarity goes missing in these cases. Of course, they would have played IPL, T20 or ODI but in red ball, the familiarity surely makes a difference."

Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin maintained the top spot, while compatriot Jasprit Bumrah jumped to 4th in the latest ICC Test Rankings for bowlers released on Wednesday.
Ashwin, who had picked a total of 6 wickets in India's 28-run loss against England in the 1st Test, is on 853 rating points, while pacer Bumrah, who also claimed half a dozen wickets, has 825 points.
The third Indian in the top 10 in the bowling charts is left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja at number six.
Jadeja also enjoys a healthy buffer at the head of the Test all-rounder rankings.
However, Joe Root, who has moved up to the fourth place, might challenge him soon if the England veteran maintains his good show with the ball.
While Root is primarily known for his batting skills, the 33-year-old showcased his handy spin by taking five wickets in the Hyderabad Test. He even opened the bowling for England in the second innings.
This effort has seen Root rise to a new career-high rating on the list for Test all-rounders and seen the evergreen England star jump one place to fourth.
Root is behind Ashwin and Shakib-Al-Hasan while Axar Patel has dropped a spot to sixth.

Kemar Roach moved up two places to 17th, Alzarri Joseph climbed four spots to 33rd, and Shamar Joseph, who was the Player-of-the-Match at the Gabba, rose a significant 42 places to reach the 50th position in the rankings
