(Asian Markets: A Mixed Session) Let's start with the latest from the markets. It was a mixed session for most Asian equity markets amid rising tensions in the Middle East, with Israel and Hezbollah trading strikes. Investors also assessed the rate cut comments from US Fed Chief Jerome Powell&rsquo;s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium of central bankers. (ULI) In the fintech space, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das announced that the central bank has decided to name its new technology platform for lending the Unified Lending Interface, or ULI. The new platform will make the consent-based flow of information about borrowers, from data providers to lenders, seamless. The RBI Governor expressed confidence that the new platform will enable quicker credit appraisals, resulting in faster loan disbursals.
(PhonePe Group Reports Profit) In the startup space, Walmart-backed PhonePe Group has reported a consolidated net profit, excluding ESOP costs, of 197 crore rupees for the fiscal year 2023-24. That&rsquo;s a significant turnaround for the company, which had incurred a loss of 738 crore rupees in the previous fiscal. PhonePe Group&rsquo;s revenue also surged almost 74 percent year-on-year to over 5,000 crore rupees. During FY24, the group expanded into financial services as well as new consumer tech businesses such as Pincode and the Indus App Store.
(Housing Prices In Micro Markets) Latest from the real estate sector: Housing prices in Bengaluru's Bagaluru rose the highest since 2020, according to a study of India&rsquo;s micro markets by real estate consultant Anarock. The analysis of price trends in the top three micro-markets of the seven major cities showed that Bagaluru recorded the highest price appreciation of 90 percent between the end of 2019 and June this year. Hyderabad's Kokapet ranked second with 89 percent price appreciation, while Bengaluru's Whitefield ranked third, with an 80 percent rise in residential prices during the period.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that 97.87% of the Rs 2000 denomination banknotes have been returned to the banking system, leaving only Rs 7,581 crore worth of these notes still with the public. The withdrawal of the Rs 2000 banknotes from circulation was initiated on May 19, 2023.
<h3>Rs 2,000 note withdrawn</h3>
At the time of the announcement, the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore. This amount has significantly reduced to Rs 7,581 crore by the close of business on June 28, 2024, highlighting the successful return of the majority of these notes.&nbsp;
The RBI provided a facility for the deposit and exchange of the Rs 2000 banknotes at all bank branches across the country until October 7, 2023. Following this date, from October 9, 2023, individuals and entities have been able to deposit the Rs 2000 banknotes at the 19 RBI issue offices.
Additionally, these notes can be sent via India Post from any post office to any of the RBI issue offices for credit into bank accounts. The 19 RBI issue offices handling the exchange and deposit of these notes are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
The Rs 2000 banknotes were initially introduced in November 2016 after the demonetization of the Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes. This move aimed to curb black money and counterfeiting.&nbsp;

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das asserted on Tuesday that high interest rates are not obstructing economic growth. He emphasized that the RBI's monetary policy will "unambiguously" focus on reducing inflation.

Speaking at an event organized by the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Das stated that India is on the brink of a "major structural shift" in its growth trajectory, with the potential to sustain an 8% real GDP growth annually. He dismissed concerns that elevated interest rates are detrimental to growth, citing sustained growth as evidence that monetary policy and interest rates are not impediments.
Das highlighted that the RBI's nowcasting team projects a 7.4% GDP growth for the June quarter, surpassing the central bank&rsquo;s estimate of 7.3%. He expressed confidence in achieving the RBI's forecasted 7.2% growth for FY25. The positive growth outlook, according to Das, allows the RBI to focus on inflation without hindrance.
Using a chess analogy, Das underscored the critical nature of maintaining focus on inflation moderation, warning that a single adverse weather event could push inflation above 5%. He credited monetary policy actions for the reduction in inflation from 7.8% in 2022 to 4.7% currently.
Lower inflation, Das argued, is essential for sustainable growth, as high inflation reduces competitiveness and investment attractiveness, and erodes purchasing power, particularly among the poor.
Das also noted a shift from government-driven growth to private capital expenditure, particularly in infrastructure sectors like cement and steel.&nbsp; Das advocated for a "multi-sectoral" approach to drive growth, emphasizing that India cannot rely solely on manufacturing or services.
He reassured that India's banking and non-bank sectors are healthy, with improved financial stability metrics. Das also praised structural reforms such as GST, the bankruptcy code, and flexible inflation targeting for bolstering the economy.

The Reserve Bank's endeavour is to smell a crisis early and act on it, Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Thursday, stating that not taking any action on unsecured lending front would have created "bigger problems".
The November 2023 action to curb growth in the riskier unsecured lending has had the desired impact as the growth in such portfolios slowed down, Das said while addressing an international conference on financial resilience at the RBI's College of Supervisors here.
Das said restrictions on unsecured lending were the result of a view that there could be a potential problem in the credit market because of growth in unsecured lending.

The overall headline parameters were looking good, but there was "clear evidence" of dilution of underwriting standards, lack of proper appraisals and a mentality to join the bandwagon for driving up the unsecured lending among some lenders, he added.
"We thought if left unattended, these vulnerabilities can become a bigger problem. So, we thought it is better to act in advance and slow down the credit growth," Das said.
He expressed satisfaction that the RBI's action has had the desired impact, as the growth in unsecured lending has indeed slowed down.
Das said the growth in credit card portfolios has slowed down to 23 per cent from 30 per cent before the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) action, while growth in bank lending to Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFC) has slowed to 18 per cent from the earlier 29 per cent.
It can be noted that on November 16 last year, the RBI increased risk weights on unsecured lending and exposure to NBFCs, which will make banks set aside larger amounts of capital on such assets.

Outward remittances under the Reserve Bank of India&rsquo;s Liberalised Remittance Scheme or LRS fell nearly 2% in April 2024 compared to the same period last year, due to a decline in remittances for the maintenance of close relatives and deposits.
Despite this overall decline, remittances for international travel, the largest component, increased by 4.04% year-on-year to 1.14 billion dollars.

Additionally, investment in equity and debt rose by 20% to around $99 million year-on-year, partially offsetting the decrease in other areas. According to the latest RBI bulletin, total remittances under the scheme stood at 2.28 billion dollars in April 2024, a 1.98% decrease from 2.3 billion dollars in April 2023.
During April 2024, remittances for the maintenance of close relatives dropped to 391.69 million dollars from 449.38 million dollars in April 2023.

The Reserve Bank on Wednesday cancelled the licence of The City Co-operative Bank, Maharashtra for lacking adequate capital and earning prospects.
The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra has also been asked to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator, RBI said.
According to RBI, the cooperative bank ceases to carry on banking operations with effect from the close of business hours on June 19, 2024.

On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs 5 lakh only from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).
"As per the data submitted by the bank, about 87 per cent of the depositors are entitled to receive full amount of their deposits from DICGC," RBI said.
As on June 14, 2024, DICGC has already paid Rs 230.99 crore of the total insured deposits based on the willingness received from the depositors concerned of the bank.
Giving details, RBI said the Mumbai-based cooperative bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
"The bank with its present financial position would be unable to pay its present depositors in full," it said, and added that public interest would be adversely affected if it is allowed to carry on its banking business any further.
Consequent to the cancellation of its licence, The City Co-operative Bank has been prohibited from conducting the business of &lsquo;banking&rsquo; which includes, among other things, acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits.&nbsp;

The Reserve Bank of India has launched a digital payments intelligence platform as banks continue to witness a surge in digital frauds.&nbsp;
"Growing instances of digital payment frauds, however, highlight the need for a system-wide approach to prevent and mitigate such frauds. It is, therefore, proposed to establish a digital payments intelligence platform for network level intelligence and real-time data sharing across the digital payments&rsquo; ecosystem," said RBI governor Shaktikanta Das.
<h3>Intelligence panel</h3>
The Reserve Bank of India has also constituted a committee to examine various aspects of setting up the platform. As per Economic Times, the panel will be chaired by Abhaya Hota who played a key role in transforming India into a digital economy as the first chief executive officer of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
Members of the panel would include representatives of NPCI, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. The report also mentioned that Vipin Surelia, head of risk at Visa, Arif Khan, chief innovation officer at Razorpay, Jitendra Gupta, founder of Jupiter, and Pranay Jhaveri, managing director of Euronet, have been appointed as members of this committee from the payment industry.&nbsp;
ET Bureau also reported that the platform will define the operational parameters and processes that will determine the extent to which data will be provided by reporting entities like banks and fintechs.&nbsp;
<h3>Surge in cyber frauds</h3>
As per The Economic Times, an analysis of frauds reported across banks has revealed a significant increase in the number of cases in FY24, with a total of 36,075 cases, marking a nearly 300 per cent rise from the 9,046 cases reported in FY22.
As per RBI's annual report of FY24, the amount involved in these frauds has drastically decreased from Rs 45,358 crore to Rs 13,930 crore. The total value of fraud reported in FY24 saw a 46.7% drop.&nbsp;
The Reserve Bank of India also noted that while private sector banks reported the highest number of fraud cases over the past three years, public sector banks accounted for the majority of the fraud amounts.

RBI governor Shaktikanta Das while addressing a press meet, told that the gold reserved overseas are brought back into India as there is enough domestic storage capacity. He also mentioned that the quantum of gold overseas had been static for a long time.
<h3>Gold reserve in India</h3>
Last week, the Reserve Bank of India transferred over 100 tonnes of gold from the UK to its vaults within the country. This marked the first time since 1991 that the RBI has augmented its domestic gold reserves.
The relocation is also expected to reduce storage expenses, previously paid to the Bank of England. At present over half of India's gold reserve is situated overseas, primarily with &nbsp;the Bank of England and the Bank of International Settlements, while approximately one-third is stored domestically.
According to RBI's annual data, the central bank's gold reserves as part of its foreign exchange reserves stood at 822 tonnes as of March 31, 2024, up from 795 tonnes during the same period last year.
According to the latest note by the World Gold Council (WGC), the RBI bought 19 tonnes of gold in the first quarter of the current calendar year 2024 (Q1-CY24 / Q4-FY24). This dwarfs the 16 tonnes of gold it bought in the whole of 2023.
The RBI started buying gold in the calendar year 2018. Before that, it had purchased 200 tonnes in 2009 during the global financial crisis.

The Reserve Bank of India has launched a new feature in UPI Lite, by which the wallet can be automatically reloaded under the e-mandate framework. This new facility enables customers to automatically reload their UPI Lite wallet when the balance falls below a certain threshold set by the user.
<h3>UPI wallet reload</h3>
At present, customers can load up to Rs 2000 and make payments up to Rs 500 per transaction using UPI Lite wallet. With this new auto reload feature, users will not have to manually recharge their wallet. Instead, it will automatically top up from their bank account, ensuring a seamless payment experience. Any pre-debit notifications or additional authentication would not be required as the funds move from the customer's bank account to the wallet.

RBI Monetary Policy Meet April 2024: In the first Monetary Policy meet for the financial year 2024-25 the Reserve Bank of India has kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.5% for the seventh time in a row. The Central Bank has also maintained the withdrawal of accommodation stance which means the RBI has decided to reduce the money supply in the system to rein in Inflation.
The RBI had increased the repo rate in the last quarter of FY23 by 25 basis points &nbsp;under the liquidity adjustment facility. Since then the interest rate has been kept unchanged.The RBI has also maintained the SDF rate at 6.25% and MSF rate at 6.75%.
<h3>RBI Governor on Inflation</h3>
RBI governor Shaktikanta Das mentioned that the MPC remains vigilant to the upside risks to inflation, that may derail the path of disinflation. He added that the monetary policy must continue to be actively disinflationary to ensure anchoring of inflation expectations and fuller transmission of the past, monetary policy actions. The MPC will remain resolute in its commitment to aligning inflation, to the target, he said.
<h3>Economic Projections</h3>
GDP growth for 2024-25 has been projected at 7% while CPI inflation for the same period is projected at 4.5%. India's GDP growth rate in the quarter ended December 2023 stood at 8.4% which was above RBI&rsquo;s estimates. In the February policy too, RBI had projected India&rsquo;s GDP to grow at 7% in FY25.&nbsp;

The Reserve Bank of India has transferred over 100 tonnes of gold from the UK to its vaults within the country.
This marks the first instance since 1991 that the RBI has augmented its domestic gold reserves, according to a Times of India report. The TOI report further added that the relocation is expected to reduce storage expenses, previously paid to the Bank of England.
Currently, more than half of the RBI's gold holdings are situated overseas, primarily with the Bank of England and the Bank of International Settlements, while approximately one-third is stored domestically. According to RBI's annual data, the central bank's gold reserves as part of its foreign exchange reserves stood at 822 tonnes as of March 31, 2024, up from 795 tonnes during the same period last year.
According to the latest note by the World Gold Council (WGC), the RBI bought 19 tonnes of gold in the first quarter of the current calendar year 2024 (Q1-CY24 / Q4-FY24). This dwarfs the 16 tonnes of gold it bought in the whole of 2023.
The RBI started buying gold in the calendar year 2018. Before that, it had purchased 200 tonnes in 2009 during the global financial crisis.&nbsp;

The Reserve Bank of India's balance sheet with Rs 70.48 lakh crore has surpassed the entire GDP of Pakistan and Bangladesh. In terms of USD, RBI's balance sheet is equivalent to $844.76 billion. According to World Bank data, cited by Business Today, Pakistan's GDP stands at $375 billion, while Bangladesh's GDP is valued at $460 billion.&nbsp;

RBI in its annual report disclosed an 11.08% increase in its balance sheet for FY24, underscoring a significant expansion in the RBI's financial position.
In the annual report, RBI has also stated that the Indian economy is navigating the drag from an adverse global macroeconomic and financial environment. It further added that the Indian economy is well placed to step up growth trajectory over the next decade in an environment of macroeconomic and financial stability.
"As headline inflation eases towards the target, it will spur consumption demand especially in rural areas," it said.
The report mentioned that the external sector's strength and buffers in the form of foreign exchange reserves will insulate domestic economic activity from global spillovers. However it also raised caution over geopolitical tensions, geoeconomic fragmentation, global financial market volatility, international commodity price movements and erratic weather developments posing downside risks to the growth outlook and upside risks to the inflation outlook.

Indian economy is likely to grow at 7 per cent in the current fiscal year starting April, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in its annual report released on Thursday.
The Indian economy, it said, expanded at a robust pace in 2023-24 (April 2023 to March 2024 financial year), with real GDP growth accelerating to 7.6 per cent from 7.0 per cent in the previous year &ndash; the third successive year of 7 per cent or above growth.
"The real GDP growth for 2024-25 is projected at 7.0 per cent with risks evenly balanced," it said.
The economy, it said, showed resilience in FY24 despite persistent headwinds. 
The size of Reserve Bank's balance sheet increased by 11.08 per cent to Rs 70.47 lakh crore as on March 2024, leading to the highest-ever dividend payout to the government, according to the central bank's annual report.
In actual terms, the increase was Rs 7,02,946.97 crore over Rs 63.45 lakh crore as on March 2023.
The central bank's net income stood at Rs 2.11 lakh crore at end-March 2024 after making a provision of Rs 42,819.91 crore, significantly down from Rs 1,30,875.75 crore in the preceding fiscal. The amount made towards provisioning is transferred to Contingency Fund (CF).
The net income during 2022-23 was Rs 87,420 crore.
Like 2022-23, no provision was made towards Asset Development Fund (ADF) during the year under review.&nbsp;

Edelweiss Financial share prices fell as much as 17% in opening trade on Thursday. This comes after Reserve Bank of India imposed business restrictions on two Edelweiss group entities on Wednesday.

Edelweiss Financial share price opened 17% lower at Rs 64 against its previous close of Rs 77.45. The shares however recovered a bit and was trading at around 12% low at 10 am. Meanwhile, equity benchmark sensex was down 0.55% at the time.&nbsp;
<h3>RBI's restriction on Edelweiss</h3>
RBI has ordered ECL Finance Ltd and Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Co. Ltd (EARCL) to cease and desist from undertaking fresh activity. As per RBI, both the firms had circumvented applicable regulations by entering into a series of structured transactions for evergreening stressed exposures of ECL, using the platform of EARCL and connected (alternative investment funds).
RBI had also said that it had also found &nbsp;incorrect valuations of security receipts in both ECL and Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Co. Ltd.
In a late-night exchange filing on May 29, Edelweiss Financial Services said it reviewed the RBI order on Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company and would address its observations.
"We are dedicated to maintaining transparency and upholding the highest standards of corporate governance and committed to compliance with regulatory requirements. There will not be any material impact on the company&rsquo;s resolution and recovery efforts, which will continue normally. We assure all our stakeholders that we are taking immediate steps to address the concerns raised by the RBI and to align our operations with regulatory expectations," said Edelweiss Financial.
In a separate exchange filing, about ECL Finance, Edelweiss Financials said the RBI order concerns the company&rsquo;s wholesale exposure. The company further claimed that it passed a board resolution to discontinue this business in the last financial year and hence Edelweiss Financials believes that the RBI's directions will not materially impact its strategy and business.
"The reduction of the wholesale exposure will continue as permitted, in the normal course of business. We reaffirm our commitment to complying with the RBI recommendations and hope to resolve this within three weeks, as directed by the RBI," said Edelweiss Financial.

The initiatives include a mobile app for retail investors, the PRAVAAH portal for streamlined regulatory approvals, and a Fintech Repository for better sectoral understanding and policy development.
<h3>Mobile App</h3>
The new mobile app, now available on both Android and iOS platforms, allows retail investors to transact in G-Secs directly from their smartphones. This development complements the existing Retail Direct portal, launched in November 2021, which facilitates retail investors in opening Retail Direct Gilt accounts with RBI, participating in primary auctions, and trading G-Secs in the secondary market.
<h3>PRAVAAH Portal</h3>
PRAVAAH (Platform for Regulatory Application, VAlidation, and AutHorisation) is a secure, centralized web-based portal designed to simplify the process of seeking authorizations, licenses, or regulatory approvals from the RBI. The portal currently supports 60 different application forms covering various regulatory and supervisory departments. It allows applicants to track the status of their submissions and receive timely decisions from the RBI. The portal aims to enhance process efficiency and will gradually incorporate more application forms as needed.
<h3>Fintech Repository</h3>
The third initiative, the Fintech Repository, is a comprehensive data storehouse managed by the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH), a wholly-owned subsidiary of RBI. This repository will capture essential information about Indian FinTech firms, their activities, and technology use, aiding in the formulation of appropriate regulatory policies. Additionally, an EmTech Repository focusing on emerging technologies like AI, ML, Cloud Computing, and more, adopted by RBI-regulated entities such as banks and NBFCs, will also be launched.
These repositories are designed to provide aggregate sectoral data, trends, and analytics, benefiting both policymakers and industry participants. The RBI encourages FinTechs and regulated entities to actively contribute to these repositories to foster a comprehensive understanding of the sector.
Through these initiatives, the RBI aims to enhance market participation, streamline regulatory processes, and support the evolving FinTech ecosystem in India.

Fitch Ratings on Monday said the record-high dividend transfer by the RBI to the government is equivalent to 0.6 per cent of GDP, and such high level of dividends as a percentage of GDP is unlikely to be maintained.
The board of India's central bank last week decided to transfer a record Rs 2.1 lakh crore dividend to the government out of the profits earned in fiscal 2023-24. This is more than double of Rs 1.02 lakh crore that was budgeted by the government.

"The RBI recently announced a record-high dividend transfer to the government equivalent to 0.6 per cent of GDP (Rs 2.1 trillion) from its operations in FY24. This is above the 0.3 per cent of GDP expected in the FY25 budget from February, so will aid the authorities in meeting near-term deficit reduction goals," the rating agency said in a statement.

Fitch said transfers from the Reserve Bank of India to the government can be significant at the margin for fiscal performance but depend on various factors, including the size and performance of assets held on the central bank's balance sheet and India's exchange rate.
Transfers may also be influenced by the RBI's views on what level of a buffer is appropriate to be maintained in balance sheet, it said.
"The potential volatility of transfers means there is significant uncertainty about their medium-term path, and we do not anticipate that dividends as a share of GDP will be sustained at such a high level," Fitch said.
However, such windfall dividend transfer should help to ensure the 5.1 per cent of GDP deficit target for the fiscal year ending March 2025 (FY25) will be met and could be used to lower the deficit beyond the current target.
The new government's budget, following the release of election results in June, is likely to be presented in July and will determine how the dividend will be used.

The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday approved a dividend of a whopping Rs 2.11 lakh crore. This is the highest ever dividend payout by the central back and it marks 140% increase from FY23. As per Bloomberg, the pay is expected to help the government in its budget deficit target.&nbsp;
"The Board...approved the transfer of Rs 2,10,874 crore as surplus to the Central Government for the accounting year 2023-24," RBI said in a statement.
<h3>Dividend payout</h3>
This will assist the government in meeting its fiscal deficit target of 5.1% of GDP for the current financial year. It would also bolster revenues for any new administration following the general elections next month, providing greater flexibility for public spending.
Teresa John, an economist with Nirmal Bang Institutional Equities told Bloomberg, that a substantial surplus transfer would help the government address any shortfall in disinvestment receipts and fund welfare plans post-elections.&nbsp;
The decision was taken at the 608th meeting of the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India held under the chairmanship of Governor Shaktikanta Das.
The dividend payout was Rs 87,416 crore for 2022-23.
"With the revival in economic growth in FY 2022-23, the Contingent Risk Buffer (CRB) was increased to 6.00 per cent. As the economy remains robust and resilient, the Board has decided to increase the CRB to 6.50 per cent for FY 2023-24," the RBI said
Government dividend receipts for any fiscal includes interim dividends announced by state-owned companies during the fiscal, and final dividends for the previous fiscal. From the CPSEs, the government has obtained Rs 4,837.25 crore as dividends from the current financial year which also includes Rs 3,443 crore as a special dividend from Telecommunications Consultants India Limited, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Telecom.
