Amid a mounting Opposition attack over reservation, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said that his party will remove 50 per cent cap on reservation &ldquo;in the interest of the people,&rdquo; if voted to power at the Centre.
&ldquo;I want to tell you from this stage that leave aside (talk of) snatching reservation, we are going to raise it above 50 per cent. The court has contained the reservation limit at 50 per cent,&rdquo; he said at an election rally in Madhya Pradesh&rsquo;s Ratlam.

The Shinde government will introduce the Bill at the one-day special session of the Assembly on Tuesday.

The Eknath Shinde cabinet in Maharashtra has approved a draft bill to reserve 10% seats in educational institutions and government jobs for Marathas. This has been a long-standing demand of the community. The Backward Class Commission recommended the quota, even though it exceeds the 50% cap set by the Supreme Court. The report suggested an exception for the socially and educationally backward community. The government will introduce the Bill at the one-day special session of the Assembly on Tuesday.

Bihar assembly passed bills to raise caste-based quota to 65%, up from 50%.

The Bihar assembly on Thursday approved a hike in quotas for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Extremely Backward Classes and Other Backward Classes from the existing 50 per cent to 65 per cent.
Bills providing for the same in educational institutions and government jobs, drafted in the backdrop of a comprehensive caste survey conducted by the Nitish Kumar government, were passed unanimously through voice vote.
According to the bills, the quota for STs will be doubled, from one to two per cent, while for SCs it will be raised from 16 per cent to 20 per cent.
For EBCs, the quota will be 25 per cent, up from 18 per cent, while for the OBCs, it will rise from 12 per cent to 15 per cent.&nbsp;

The four per cent reservation will now be divided into two equal parts and added to the existing quota for the Vokkaligas and Lingayats for whom two new reservation categories of 2C and 2D were created during the Belagavi Assembly Session last year.
The cabinet decided to bring the religious minorities under the EWS category.
The decision comes ahead of the assembly elections.
Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the religious minorities quota would be done away with and brought under the 10 percent pool of the EWS group without any change of condition.
&ldquo;The four per cent (reservation for minorities) will be divided into two between 2C and 2D. The four per cent reservation for the Vokkaligas and others will enhance to six per cent and Veerashaiva Panchamasali and others (Lingayats), who were getting five per cent reservation will now get seven per cent,&rdquo; the CM explained.

A day ahead of her appearance before the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi liquor scam, BRS leader K Kavitha on Friday commenced a six-hour hunger strike seeking early passage of the long-pending Women's Reservation Bill.
CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury inaugurated the strike programme at Jantar Mantar here.
Among leaders present at the strike were Samajwadi Party leader Seema Shukla, Telangana Education Minister Savita Indra Reddy as well as state Women and Child Welfare Minister Sathyavathi Rathore. &nbsp; &nbsp;Sanjay Singh and Chitra Sarwara (AAP), Naresh Gujral (Akali Dal), Anjum Javed Mirza (PDP), Shami Firdous (NC), Sushmita Dev (TMC), KC Tyagi (JDU), Seema Malik (NCP), Narayana K (CPI), Shyam Rajak (RLD), Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiva Sena) and ex-Congress leader Kapil Sibal have confirmed their participation.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; "Our party will extend support to Kavitha in this protest till the bill is passed. It is important to bring this bill to give equal opportunity to women in politics," Yechury said in his inaugural address.
Kavitha said, "If India needs to develop, women should play a key role in politics. For which, it is important to bring this bill which is pending for last 27 years." &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;This is just the beginning and the protest will continue across the country, she added.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The bill, which seeks to reserve 33 per cent seats in Lok Sabha and all state legislative assemblies for women, was initially introduced in Lok Sabha on September 12, 1996, by the United Front government.
The Vajpayee government pushed for the bill in Lok Sabha but it still wasn't passed.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;However, the UPA-I government, led by Congress, again introduced it in May 2008 and was passed in the Rajya Sabha but it was referred to a standing committee. In 2010, it was passed in the House and transmitted finally to the Lok Sabha. However, the bill lapsed with the 15th Lok Sabha. Since then, the bill has been lying in cold storage.
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana Chief Minister M K Chandrasekhar Rao, had on Thursday said the bill has been lying in cold storage since 2010 and the Modi government has a historic opportunity to get it passed in Parliament before 2024.

None of the BJP leaders raised this issue and the Modi government has failed to get this bill passed in Parliament despite having a majority, she said, and added, "This is a very saddening issue." Kavitha had also said the hunger strike was planned a week before but the ED summoned her to depose before it on March 9, just a day before the planned agitation. The agency agreed to her request to appear on March 11 after the agitation.
&nbsp; &nbsp; The BRS leader has been summoned by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in the excise policy.

At present, there is vertical and horizontal reservation in all paramilitary forces for candidates from Scheduled Castes at 15%, Scheduled Tribes at 7.5%, Other Backward Classes at 27%, Economically Weaker Sections at 10%, and ex-servicemen at 10%.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday while responding to a question by MP John Brittas. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in a written reply that &ldquo;an in-principle approval has been given for reservation of 10% of vacancies for ex-Agniveers in the recruitment to the post of Constable (General Duty)/Rifleman in the Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Rifles.&rdquo; &nbsp;
He further said, &ldquo;10% horizontal reservation is decided to be given to Ex-Agniveers for the post of Constable(GD)/Rifleman when the first batch of Ex-Agniveers is available for recruitment after completing engagement period of four years in Defence Forces.&rdquo;&nbsp;
At present, there is a provision for vertical and horizontal reservation in openings in all paramilitary forces with conditions for candidates from Scheduled Castes at 15 percent, Scheduled Tribes at 7.5 percent, Other Backward Classes at 27 percent, Economically Weaker Sections at 10 percent, and ex-servicemen at 10 percent.
Under vertical reservation, candidates from SC, ST, and OBC are covered, and ex-servicemen get horizontal reservation. While horizontal reservation cuts across the vertical, the latter can&rsquo;t be interlocked.&nbsp;
While Agniveers will be eligible for horizontal, their reservation will also cover all classes in addition to their service in the armed forces.
