The retail inflation has eased to 4.75% in May as against, 4.83% in April. The core inflation has also eased to 3.1% in May in comparison to 3.2% in April.
Food inflation in May remained largely the same as April, coming in at 8.69%, however vegetable inflation continued to remain high, coming in at 27.3%. Meanwhile, fuel prices contracted 3.83% as compared to a 4.24% decline in April.&nbsp;
<h3>Inflation in check</h3>
The Reserve Bank of India remains committed to for aligning inflation to 4% on a durable basis. The central bank has kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.5% for the eighth time in row during its June MPC meet. RBI projected the CPI inflation for FY25 at 4.5%, assuming normal monsoon.
Meanwhile, the factory output remains steady at 5% mainly due to good show by mining and power sectors, according to official data released on Wednesday. The factory output measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) witnessed a growth of 4.6% in April 2023.
The Manufacturing sector's output also grew 3.9% in April 2024 against 5.5% in the year-ago month.

Retail inflation rate stayed almost flat at 5.09 per cent in February compared to the preceding month, according to official data released on Tuesday.
Inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was at 5.1 per cent in January and 6.44 per cent in February 2023.
According to the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), retail inflation in the food basket was at 8.66 per cent in February, marginally up from 8.3 per cent in the previous month.
The Reserve Bank of India has been tasked by the government to ensure retail inflation remains at 4 per cent with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.
Last month, the central bank projected the CPI inflation at 5.4 per cent for the current fiscal (2023-24) and recorded at 5 per cent in January-March quarter.&nbsp;

In November, official data revealed that retail inflation climbed to a three-month high of 5.55%, primarily propelled by surging food prices. This surge followed October's inflation rate of 4.87%, marking a consecutive decline from August's peak of 6.83%. Comparatively, the retail inflation figure in November 2021 stood at 5.88%. Notably, the food basket's inflation rate spiked to 8.7% in November, significantly higher than October's 6.61% and November 2022's 4.67%, as per the National Statistical Office (NSO) data.

This marks a notable decrease from the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based retail inflation recorded in September, which stood at 5.02%, showcasing a consistent downward trend. The last time inflation figures were as low as the current rate was back in June when it touched 4.87%.
Looking ahead, the Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), during its October meeting, anticipated a further decline in CPI inflation for the fiscal year 2023-24. The projection stands at 5.4%, demonstrating a substantial moderation from the 6.7% recorded in the previous fiscal year, 2022-23.
In a bid to maintain economic stability, the government has entrusted the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) with the responsibility of ensuring that the CPI inflation remains at 4%, allowing for a marginal fluctuation of 2% on either side. This aligns with the central bank's practice of primarily considering retail inflation data when formulating its bi-monthly monetary policy.

Retail Inflation September 2023: Led by a drop in vegetable prices, the retail inflation for September eased to 5.02%. In August, the headline print was 6.83%, compared to 7.44% in July, according to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.&nbsp;
While inflation is showing a downward trend, this CPI number of just over 5% is still higher than RBI's target of 4%.&nbsp;

RBI governor Shaktikanta Das during the October MPC meet made it clear that the central bank&rsquo;s inflation target is 4% and not 2% to 6%. For FY24, RBI has projected the CPI inflation at 5.4% and the inflation for Q1FY25 is estimated to be 5.2%.

Even though vegetables and edible oil prices dropped, the inflation in cereals pulses and spices continued to exert price pressures due to domestic weather shocks, geopolitical turmoil and global shortages.

The headline retail inflation for the month August fell to 6.83% from 7.44% in July. The drop in retail inflation comes as vegetable prices cooled down with the country&rsquo;s food inflation easing to 9.94% in August from 11.51% in July.
However, despite easing down the data by the National Statistics Office shows that this is the fourth instance the inflation has stayed outside the upper bound of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) tolerance limit of 2-6%. It is also the 47th month in a row that it has stayed above the central bank's medium-term target of 4%.&nbsp;

Retail inflation jumped to a 15-month high of 7.44% in July as prices of vegetables and other food items spiked, according to official data released on Monday.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation was at 4.87% in June and 6.71% in July 2022.
Previously, high inflation was recorded at 7.79% in April 2022.

The inflation in the food basket was 11.51% in July compared to 4.55% in June and 6.69% in July 2022, as per the data.
The retail inflation in vegetables year-on-year was 37.43% while the rate of price rise in 'cereals and products' was 13%, showed the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO).

Retail inflation for farm workers and rural labourers inched up marginally to 6.31% and 6.16%, respectively in June as compared to 5.99% and 5.84% in May this year.
The All-India Consumer Price Index Number for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers for June 2023 increased by 10 points each to 1,196 points and 1,207 points, respectively. CPI-AL and CPI-RL were 1,186 points and 1,197 points in May 2023.
"Point-to-point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL (consumer price index agricultural labour) and CPI-RL (rural labour) stood at 6.31% and 6.16% in June 2023 compared to 5.99% and 5.84% respectively in May 2023 and 6.43% and 6.76% during the corresponding month of (June 2022) the previous year," a labour ministry statement said.
Similarly, food inflation stood at 7.03% and 6.70% in June, compared to 6.31% and 6.07% in May and 5.09% and 5.16% in the year-ago period.
The major contribution towards the rise in general index of AL and RL came from food group to the extent of 9.59 points and 8.96 points, respectively mainly due to increase in prices of rice, pulses, milk, meat goat, fish-fresh/dry, gur, chillies-green/dry, garlic, ginger, onion, vegetables &amp; fruits, etc.

The size of the country's retail market is expected to touch USD 2 trillion by 2032, growing from USD 690 billion in 2021, according to a joint report by Anarock and Retailers Association of India (RAI).
The report by property consultant Anarock and RAI said that real estate developers plan to add nearly 25 million square feet of new mall space across seven major cities over the next 4-5 years.
In 2022, these seven cities added over 2.6 million sq ft of mall space, up 27 per cent from the preceding year.
"The festive season, devoid of restrictions and any fear of the contagion, was exemplary with record high volumes and sales value," Anuj Kejriwal, CEO &amp; Managing Director - ANAROCK Retail, said.
Sales value estimated during the festive season in late 2022 was Rs 2.5 lakh crore, nearly 2.5 times compared to the previous year, he said.

A new SBI research report says that inflation is likely to fall to 5% by March. Retail inflation for the month of december came in at 5.72%, marginally lower than 5.88% in November 2022 and down from 6.77% in October 2022.&nbsp;
The SBI report by SBI Group Chief Economic Advisor Soumya Kanti Ghosh says that "CPI inflation fell to a 12-month low of 5.72 per cent in December 22, along expected lines, primarily due to huge decline in vegetable prices".&nbsp; The report goes on to say, "Against the evolving landscape, we see little incentive for further (repo) rate hike, with synchronised past actions on rate front yet to show the full impact".&nbsp;
Remember, RBI has undertaken aggressive rate hikes, to the extent of 225 basis points, in an effort to curb inflationary pressures.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the National Statistical Office, the inflation in the food basket was 4.79 per cent in March, as against 5.95 per cent in February and 7.68 per cent in the year-ago period. The retail inflation rose from 5.7 per cent in December 2022 to 6.4 per cent in February 2023 on the back of higher inflation in cereals, milk and fruits and slower deflation in vegetables prices. Reserve Bank of India has projected the CPI inflation at 5.2 per cent for FY2023-24, with 5.1 per cent in Q1, 5.4 per cent in Q2, 5.4 per cent in Q3, and 5.2 per cent in Q4, and risks evenly balanced.
