India captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday revealed that he tried to convince outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid to stay on besides acknowledging his massive contribution to the team over the past two and a half years.
Dravid on Monday had made it clear that the T20 World Cup would be his last assignment with the Indian team. A day later, Rohit got emotional while talking about his first captain on the national side.
Gautam Gambhir is seen as Dravid's successor but it remains unclear if he has applied for the job.
"I tried convincing him to stay, but obviously there are a lot of things that he needs to look after as well. But yeah, I personally enjoyed my time with him.
"I'm sure the rest of the guys will say the same. It's been great working with him. And I'm not going to say anything actually. I'm not going to say anything," said an emotional Rohit when asked if the team has planned a farewell for him.
Rohit and Dravid go back a long way with the former having made his India debut under the player-turned-coach in June 2007.
"He was my first international captain when I made my debut in Ireland. Then I saw him play while I was just coming into the team (for) Test matches when he was captain. And such a big role model for all of us," said Rohit ahead of India's World Cup opener against Ireland on Wednesday.
"Growing up, we watched him play and we know what he has achieved, personally as a player and also what he's done for the team over the years. Battling out the team from difficult situations and that is what he's known for," he said referring to the 'Wall'.
India have not bee able to win a trophy in the Rohit-Dravid era yet but the head coach's contribution has been immense, said the skipper.
"He's shown a lot of great determination throughout his career and that is something that when he came here as a coach, I wanted to learn from him.
"It's been very fruitful. Other than the big silver (trophy), we won all the major tournaments and series. I've enjoyed every bit of it, working with him, and deciding what direction the team needs to head.
"And for him to buy into that thought, obviously makes a huge difference. And he was the first one who came and said, 'This is what we need to do as a team'. No matter what happens, but at least we'll give it a good shot at it when he arrives," added Rohit.
Dravid had taken charge of the team in November 2021.&nbsp;

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has nothing but empathy for Hardik Pandya as he navigates a challenging phase in his career and is hopeful that the all-rounder, who "hasn't been a free man in the last two months", will become one during next month's T20 World Cup.
Pandya endured a forgettable IPL both as captain and player with his team Mumbai Indians ending bottom of the heap in the points table. What made things worse was the incessant jeering of fans whenever he took the field, including at MI's home turf -- the Wankhede Stadium.
But Harbhajan expects the tide to turn in the Americas during the T20 showpiece.
"When he wears that blue jersey, he will be a different Hardik Pandya because we know he can score those runs and take those wickets. I want Hardik to come good as he has gone through a lot and I wish him all the very best to have a very good tournament for India," Harbhajan told PTI in an exclusive interview.
"If he has a good tournament, obviously India will have a great chance to go forward," he said.
"Yes, his form is a bit of a concern...and lot of other stuff was going on around him, his shifting from Gujarat to Mumbai, was a big change and the team (MI) didn't react too well to Hardik coming back and that too as captain," the 43-year-old added.
The reason for the fan backlash against Pandya was MI's decision to hand him the captaincy after taking it away from the long-serving Rohit Sharma.
There was speculation throughout the season that MI's dressing room was a divided house due to the change of guard. Rohit will now captain the national side with Pandya as his deputy in the World Cup starting June 1.
Harbhajan, a multi format World Cup-winner, urged the team management to bring Pandya and Rohit on "same page".
"...it looked like they (MI) were not playing together as a team. So there was a lot going on. Hardik wasn't a free man in the last two months. I believe both of them and many others who have played in different teams will have to come together to do something special for the nation...," he said.
"Winning a World Cup is a bigger achievement than winning an IPL trophy, so I would urge the management to bring everyone together, have them on one page and make sure they play like one.
"I believe it's the responsibility of the management to come together, and win together. Even if they lose they should be losing together." Bumrah will need support

BCCI has announced the squads for Team India's tour of South Africa which consists of 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests starting December 10.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli were in tears in the dressing room following India's heartbreaking loss to Australia in the recent ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said.
Australia beat India by six wickets on November 19 in the final to win a record sixth ODI World Cup title.
After the loss, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Indian dressing room and tried to cheer up Rohit and Kohli.
But Ashwin said the dressing room witnessed some heartbreaking scenes.
"Yes, we were feeling the pain. Rohit and Virat were in tears, (and) seeing it felt bad. Anyway, (it was) not meant to be. This team was an experienced side, (and) everyone knew what to do," he told former cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath on the his YouTube channel.
Although India failed to emerge successful in the World Cup, Kohli and Rohit lit up the event up with their explosive batting.
Ashwin heaped praise on Rohit, both as a batter and leader.
"If you take a look at Indian cricket, everybody will be telling you that MS Dhoni is the best captain. (But), Rohit Sharma is an outstanding person, (and) he understands every single player in the team," he said.
"He knows the likes and dislikes of each of us and has a great understanding. He puts in the effort to know each player personally," he reckoned.
Ashwin played just a game in the entire World Cup, India's opener against Australia in Chennai, finishing with figures of one for 34.
Asked why Rohit didn't include him in the playing XI for the final, he backed the skipper saying it's not easy to change the winning combination.
"As far as I playing the final is concerned, the team combination and all is secondary. Firstly, it's about empathy, (and) I keep stressing it a lot.
"It's like standing in someone else's shoes and looking at things from his/her perspective. Had I been in Rohit's shoes, I would have thought 100 times about altering the (winning) combination," he said.
"It was going alright for the team, so why rest a fast bowler for three spinners?" he wondered Ashwin said he was prepared for the grand finale, but was not certain about his place in the playing XI.
"Honestly, I understood Rohit Sharma's thought process. Playing the final is big, (and) I was preparing for three days in the lead-up," Ashwin said.
"At the same time, I was also prepared to cheer for the side and run in with energy drinks if I was not given the opportunity. I was mentally prepared for that as well," the spinner concluded.

Rohit has respect for New Zealand whom he described as probably the "most disciplined" side in the competition, adding that they have a quality of reading the opposition very well.

Over the past few weeks, his team has transformed into an unstoppable force vanquishing everyone on its path to glory. But, in Wednesday's World Cup semifinal against New Zealand, India skipper Rohit Sharma also wants "luck to favour" his squad.
"Time has come for luck to favour you and fortune favours the brave," Rohit said on the eve of the big-ticket game.
Rohit said the hosts will not be required to make big changes in regards to their mindset and approach just because they are headed into the semifinal clash.
India have been the most dominant team in this World Cup having won all their nine league matches to finish at the top of the points table and will face the Kiwis at the Wankhede Stadium in the first semifinal.
"I don't think we need to do anything different than what we have been doing," Rohit told the media here before India's only training session ahead of the semifinal game.
The captain said pressure has always been a part of the journey for them as Indian cricketers and it will be no different when they will take the field for the semifinal.
"Be it a league match or semifinal, the pressure is always there in a World Cup match. We have handled it well from the first game to the last. The team has responded well," Rohit said.
"We are focusing on playing good cricket in the next two games. Pressure is always there on us as Indian cricketers. The need is to focus on the game and not on the pressure and challenges from the other side," he added.
Rohit has respect for New Zealand whom he described as probably the "most disciplined" side in the competition, adding that they have a quality of reading the opposition very well.
"New Zealand (are) probably (the) most disciplined team. They play smart cricket, they understand the opposition very well. They understand the mentality of the opposition. They have been very consistent playing semis and finals of all ICC tournaments," Rohit said.
Rohit acknowledged that while the pressure has been there on his side to emulate the feat of the batches of 1983 under Kapil Dev and in 2011 under MS Dhoni, he said the only aspect that the current players are interested in is self-improvement.
"That's the beauty of this team. Half of the guys were not even born when we won the World Cup for the first time. Half of them weren't playing cricket when we won it the last time.
"I don't see them talking about how we won the first or the last World Cup. The focus is on getting better and what we can do to improve. Focus is always on the present," Rohit said.
The second semifinal will be held in Kolkata on Thursday between South Africa and Australia who finished second and third respectively.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma is relishing his own effortless stroke-making in the ongoing World Cup but the Indian skipper is not swinging his bat "mindlessly".
When Rohit takes on the bowlers upfront, the most audacious-looking shots appear to have been hit with remarkable ease, true to his languid batting style.
The captain has pulled off some mesmerising knocks in this showpiece with his 87-run knock against England on a tricky Lucknow wicket standing out after he slayed the Afghanistan attack in New Delhi.
However the Indian opener reminded every one that he is not just going out there and swinging his arms, saying he always has team requirement and match-situation in mind. "I am enjoying my batting but obviously keeping in mind the team and the situation. It is not like that I have to go and swing my bad mindlessly - I have to use it (the bat) well, have to play well and get the team in good situations - that is my mindset," Rohit said ahead of contest against Sri Lanka. "The scoreboard is zero when I open, I have to set the tone for the game. I have the advantage, you can call it, that I am opening the batting and there is no pressure of (a fallen) wicket. When you have to start you can play fearlessly but then last game we were put under pressure in the powerplay, we lost three wickets." Rohit said the team's thumping win in the Asia Cup final over Sri Lanka, and the fact that it was the same opponent which they had beaten in the 2011 World Cup final to lift the trophy, would have no bearing on the contest here on Thursday.
"In this World Cup we have seen a lot of games, I would not call it an upset because every team here is to win games. Every team is trying to beat the other team so at no point you can think that this is a cakewalk for us.
"It is important that you stay in the present, do your processes and keep working as a team on what you have been doing as a team. We are not trying to look too much into the opposition, we are trying to look internally and see where we can get better as a team and as players and certain areas that we want to work on," he added.
Rohit acknowledged the fact that hardly one or two players from that past Lankan team are in the current line-up.
"It has been more than a decade now since that has happened and I do not think that is going to be a factor," he said.
The home skipper also hoped that Hardik Pandya will be back in action soon and his progress at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has been &lsquo;very positive&rsquo; as a question mark remains on his comeback to the side in this World Cup.
Pandya has been out of action since he damaged the ligaments of his left ankle on October 19 in the World Cup league game against Bangladesh, and is expected to join the team only at the end of the league stage round against the Netherlands on November 12 in Bengaluru.

"He is not available for the game tomorrow. It is such an injury that we are tracking it daily, in terms of how much he has recovered, how much he has bowled or batted. We will take a call on him on a day-to-day basis. But the way he has been progressing, hopefully he will be able to come back very soon," Rohit said

Captain Rohit Sharma on Sunday heaped praise on his bowlers for "showing their magic" in India's 100-run win over England in a World Cup match here, saying "you don't see that every day".

Before that, Rohit struck 87 on a challenging pitch to help India post 229 for 9 after being put in to bat.
"You don't see that every day when you are defending such a total. Our seamers exploited the conditions very well, there was swing and lateral movement available (on the pitch)," <a href="https://www.editorji.com/amp/web-stories/sports/cricket/icc-cricket-world-cup-lowest-totals-successfully-defended-by-india-ind-vs-eng-india-vs-england-1698594338222">Rohit</a> said at the post-match presentation.
"We have got a good balance there. A couple of good spinners and seamers bringing in their experience. When you have a bowling line-up like that, it's important that the batters give them something to work with, and show their magic," he added when asked about the variety in his side's bowling unit.
He said his players showed "a lot of character" and they, especially the experienced players, stood up at the right time.
"This was a game where we showed a lot of character. All the experienced players stood up at the right time and won us the game.
"Looking at how the tournament has gone for us, batting second in the first five games and then we had to bat first here, we were challenged. We knew the pitch had something in it and we had the experience in our bowling, so we wanted to get to a decent total." Rohit, however, admitted that his side were found wanting during their batting innings and they were 30 runs short .
"We were not great with the bat. Losing three wickets in the first powerplay isn't the ideal situation. You have to then create a long partnership, which we did. But then we just lost wickets, including mine.
"Looking at the overall picture, I thought we were 30 runs short." On his own batting, Rohit, who was named player of the match, said, "After the first 10 overs, it was important to stitch a partnership. You have to play the situation as well and not just play your shots.
"If you have that experience, you should use it. But I still thought we were 20-30 runs short. The new ball was a bit challenging and as the game went on, the ball got softer and it was not easy to rotate strike." A disappointed England captain Jos Buttler said his side did not execute their plans and admitted they failed with the willow.
"Very disappointed. At the halfway stage, chasing 230, we would have fancied ourselves. Same old story. Very disappointed. I wasn't sure about the dew, the gut failed said we should chase," he said.
"I think whichever way you want to go, you have to be committed. It's all about execution. It is. The answer is on a postcard, I think. It was a great start in the powerplay by the bowlers, the guys found some movement.
"The ground fielding was good. But the way we batted, we didn't back that up." The top seven teams after the league stage of this World Cup will join hosts Pakistan in the 2025 Champions Trophy. England are languishing at the bottom of the table.
Asked about that, Buttler said, "Yeah, we are aware of that and there's still lot to play for."&nbsp;

Suryakumar Yadav also scored 49 runs which helped India set a 230-run total for the Three Lions.
In reply, there was no end to England's struggles as the top order took a tumble courtesy of a Bumrah-Shami show which saw the Three Lions tumble to 52/5 within 16 overs.
Shami finished with 4 wickets followed by Bumrah with 3 on the night.

With this, Sharma surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to have the most number of tons for any Indian at the marquee tournament. His century is also the fastest ton by an Indian at the World Cup, surpassing Kapil Devi's 72-ball 100 in 83'. Popularly known as the Hitman of Indian cricket, Sharma also broke Chris Gayle's record of 553 sixes in international cricket. While the West Indies powerhouse took 551 innings to score 553 sixes, Rohit Sharma went past him in just his 473rd innings. Against Afghanistan in Delhi, Rohit also completed his 1000 runs in ODI World Cups. He equalled David Warner's record, who also took 19 inns to score 1000 WC runs.&nbsp;

Australia saved their best for the last as Indian middle-order wilted under pressure exerted by part-time off-spin of Glenn Maxwell, losing the third ODI by 66 runs here on Wednesday.

India were cruising along at 171 for 2 chasing a stiff target of 353 on a placid track but the middle-order crumbled in chase with Maxwell (4/40) getting crucial breakthroughs to restrict the hosts to 286 in 49.4 overs.

Smith also put brakes on his poor run of scores to make a rapid 74 and towards the end, Labuschagne upped the ante with his 58-ball knock to help Australia post their challenging score.
Labuschagne also became Australia's top run-getter in the ongoing calendar year.
During the chase, Rohit clobbered six sixes and five fours to race to 81 from 57 balls and recorded his ninth fifty against Australia and 53rd overall, while Kohli, who looked good for his 48th ODI ton had to settle for 66th half-century.
The two batters put on 70 for the second wicket and took India close to the 150-run mark by the 21st over, but after Rohit and Kohli were dismissed, the others fumbled collectively.
Maxwell accounted for Washington Sundar (18) and then held onto a stunning reflex catch of Rohit, had Kohli mistime a pull-shot and fooled Shreyas Iyer (48) with a beauty to mark an impressive return after a six-month long injury layoff.
Josh Hazlewood took 2/42 and Cameron Green claimed 2/30 to provide ideal support for Maxwell.
Rohit began with two spectacular sixes off Mitchell Starc over cover and pulled Pat Cummins twice over midwicket with command to provide early impetus.
The India captain, coming off a two-game break, hit the straps immediately which also made up for the dot balls his first-wicket partner Washington Sundar consumed.
The makeshift opener Washington Sundar pulled Hazlewood for his first four and smacked Cummins for a six &mdash; reminiscent of his famous six from the 2020-21 Australia tour &mdash; but perished for 18 off 30 balls.
Rohit and Kohli went about their jobs unchallenged for the better part of their stand, but their association came to an abrupt end in the 21st over when Maxwell, taking an evasive action on a powerful shot from the India skipper, ended up catching the ball one-handed.
Maxwell continued to make inroads as this time he got the key wicket of Kohli, who, looking to clear Steve Smith at midwicket, got a top edge, which was collected by the fielder running behind.
Despite a set platform to take the mantle, India&rsquo;s middle-order stuttered which allowed Australia to grab control.
KL Rahul added 52 runs with Iyer for the fourth wicket but fell to Starc after a 30-ball 26 and Suryakumar Yadav (8) pulled one short from Hazlewood to Maxwell.
Maxwell then cleaned up Iyer for a 43-ball 48 (1x4s, 2x6s) and Hazlewood had Kuldeep Yadav chop one onto his wickets.
Ravindra Jadeja scored 35 from 36 balls (3x4s, 1x6s) but had no batting partner left to try avoiding the inevitable.

&nbsp;After bundling out Sri Lanka for 50 on Sunday, Indian captain Rohit Sharma couldn't hide his delight at the performance of his fast bowlers and said the variety they give to the team is extremely important.
Pacer Mohammed Siraj bowled a wonderful spell (6 for 21) that laid the foundation for India's 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final.
"I get a lot of satisfaction when I see fast bowlers perform like this. All the captains take a lot of pride in fast bowling (at their disposal), and I am no different. We have got a fantastic set of fast bowlers," Rohit said at the post-match media conference.
"All of them have different skill sets and variations &ndash; one can bowl quick, one can swing the ball, one can get good bounce. When you get all of these aspects in one team, it is a feel-good factor," added Rohit.
Rohit said Siraj was so high on adrenaline after an unbroken seven-over spell that yielded six wickets, and it required a word from the team trainer to stop the pacer from bowling.
"It was very pleasing to watch from the slips (how Siraj bowled). He got the ball to move a bit more than the other two. We were riding behind him (Siraj) when he was bowling that spell," the skipper said.
"He bowled seven overs in that spell, and I got a message from the trainer that we have to stop him now. He was quite desperate to bowl," said Rohit with a chuckle.
However, Rohit said he was not planning to give Siraj another over.
"He bowled seven overs, which is a lot. Siraj was in a similar situation against SL in Trivandrum, and he had bowled some 8-9 overs on the trot," he added.
Rohit also heaped praise on left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was later adjudged 'Player of the tournament'.
"Kuldeep has done very well under pressure. He bowled well against Sri Lanka (Super 4 match) and we won despite posting a small total." "His confidence has been going up over the last two years or so. He drags the team back into the match from any situation," said Rohit.
The Mumbaikar said the Asia Cup triumph has come at the right time for the team, and they have taken a lot of positives from the tournament ahead of the World Cup, starting next month.
"Throughout the tournament the guys stood up under pressure, and they performed their roles. We were slightly below par in some games (in fielding), but overall, our fielding was very good, slip fielding especially.
"We will have off days on the field, which is fine as long as you bounce back well the next day," he added.
