The absence of two frontline bowlers, Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande, and copious amount of dew at the Chepauk Stadium hurt Chennai Super Kings in their seven-wicket defeat against Punjab Kings at Chepauk on Wednesday, reckoned skipper Ruturaj Gaikward.
CSK could only muster a below-par 162/7. Gaikwad made a handsome 62 but other batters struggled against accurate spin bowling by Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar.
CSK had to make two changes for the match as their Sri Lankan pacer Pathirana was nursing a niggle and Deshpande was unwell.
Replacements Richard Gleeson and Shardul Thakur failed to impress as heavy dew set in during PBKS's chase.
"It is a real problem (not having Pathirana and Deshpande). There are phases where you want to get a wicket, and you have only two bowlers, plus the spinners are out of the question because of the dew. Can't do much," Gaikwad rued during the post-match presentation.
The skipper added that the dew compounded CSK's problem as they tried to restrict PBKS batters.
"It's very difficult. Even in the last game, we were quite surprised that we would win by that much margin.
"This (dew) is something we can't control. We can slightly bat better in the first innings. In the last two games, we tried our best to get 200-210. It was tough to get 180 in this pitch," he said.
Gaikwad said another 50-60 runs would have made the difference.
"50-60 runs short to be honest. When we were batting first, the pitch wasn't great, plus the dew as well (in the second innings)." The skipper also rued his luck with the toss, saying despite trying his best, he couldn't find the right formula to call it right.
"I have practised (toss) a lot. I have tossed it in the match. I am winning in the practice, but not winning in the match. What to do. I am really under pressure at the toss, not at the game," said Gaikwad.

The Chennai Super Kings dropped a bombshell on Thursday, just a day ahead of CSK vs RCB IPL 2024 opening game, that MS Dhoni will not lead the Men in Yellow.
An official statement from the franchise read, "MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings&rsquo; captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of IPL 2024. "
"Ruturaj has been an integral part of CSK since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season," the statement added.
The official announcement came moments after the IPL released pictures of the 2024 captains photoshoot and surprisingly, it was Ruturaj Gaikwad who turned up for the Chennai Super Kings instead of MS Dhoni.
A similar thing happened with the Punjab Kings where Jitesh Sharma represented the PBKS franchise instead of Shikhar Dhawan. However, IPL's social media handle clarified that Punjab was 'being represented by vice-captain Jitesh Sharma.'
It didn't provide any such information for Dhoni, which led the fans to speculate that MSD might have handed over the captaincy duties to Gaikwad.&nbsp;
IPL 2024 is expected to be Dhoni's swansong as the former India captain is likely to hang up his boots after this season. However, no official announcement has been made yet.
Dhoni retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, but has continued to play for CSK since then. He has led Chennai to 5 IPL titles in 16 IPL seasons.
Interestingly, it was the first time since the start of IPL back in 2008 that the IPL captains photoshoot didn't feature either MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma.

According to Cricbuzz, internal sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that 26-year-old Gaikwad sustained a finger injury during the second One Day International (ODI) against South Africa in Port Elizabeth on December 19. This injury has led to his release from the ongoing Indian team's campaign in South Africa.
The BCCI, before the commencement of the third ODI, had released a statement indicating Gaikwad's injury status. It read, "(He) hasn't fully recovered from the blow he sustained to his ring finger while fielding in the second ODI. He remains under the supervision of the BCCI Medical Team."
As the situation evolved, it became clear that Gaikwad would not be able to recuperate in time for the Test matches. Consequently, after discussions with the BCCI, the team management in South Africa decided to release him from the squad. Gaikwad is anticipated to return to India by Saturday.
