Kirin Holdings, a beverage giant has launched the world's first commercially available electric spoon. This battery-powered spoon can make food taste salty without using any salt.

It's done by passing a very weak electric current through the spoon, which creates a salty taste for the tongue. Researchers say the spoon will help promote healthy eating, as people won't need to add salt to their food to get a salty taste. Over consumption of sodium had been a huge health concern all over the world as stated by WHO. The spoon has four different levels of saltiness for people to choose from.
The object was co-developed with Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita, who previously demonstrated taste-enhancing effects using electric currents in prototype chopsticks. He won the Ig Nobel Nutrition Prize last year.
A survey conducted by the company in 2021 revealed that people who try to limit their salt intake often complain that their food becomes tasteless. The spoon weighs 60g and operates on a rechargeable lithium battery.
Priced at 19,800 yen ($126), the spoon was brought to market after the company announced in 2022 that it had developed a chopsticks-like device to modify taste perceptions using an electric current.
Excessive salt consumption is a significant health concern in Japan. According to the health ministry, the average daily salt intake for individuals aged 20 and over is 10 grams, which is double the 5 grams recommended by the World Health Organization.

Many may take it with a pinch of salt, but limiting your sodium intake should definitely be on your to-do list. An average person consumes 9 to 12 grammes of salt. However, health professionals often recommend limiting their sodium intake to 1,500&ndash;2300 mg per day.

As per the WHO, salt can potentially cause too many health hazards. Some of them are mentioned below:
1. Rise in blood pressure: A high-salt meal disrupts the natural sodium balance in the body. This may cause fluid retention, further contributing to high blood pressure. A few reports have also suggested that high salt intake can also cause stiffening of blood vessels, which can lead to premature death.
2. Increases the risk of stomach cancer: Excess salt may promote gastric Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) colonisation in the stomach, which is a risk factor for gastric cancer. High dietary salt intake also accounts for many gastric cancer cases.
3. Salt can cause puffiness: Salt causes the body to retain water, which can leak into the tissues and prompt swelling.
4. Increases the risk of type 2 diabetes: Adding salt to meals has also been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The more people add salt to their foods, the more likely they are to develop type 2 diabetes.
<h3>How can you cut down on salt?</h3>
1. Avoid processed foods
It's essential to limit frozen dinners and processed foods. Eat more fruits and vegetables. You can also go for fresh poultry, fish, and meat instead of canned, smoked, and marinated. If snacks are an integral part of your day-to-day routine, then you should opt for healthy munching.
2. Go for low-sodium foods.
Opt for &ldquo;low,&rdquo; &ldquo;reduced-sodium,&rdquo; or &ldquo;no-salt-added" versions of foods. Before buying your processed food, make sure to take into account how much sodium it contains. You can also find a low-salt version of your favourite snacks, such as nuts and banana chips.
3. Use more herbs
Instead of relying on salt, you can boost the flavour of your food with herbs, spices, lemon, lime, and vinegar. One should avoid going salt-free immediately and instead start by cutting their intake in half, working their way towards healthy substitutes.
4. Home-made meals
Try to avoid outside food as much as possible, as restaurant meals mostly contain high levels of sodium. Cooking home-made meals will also help you keep your salt intake in check.&nbsp;

Reducing salt intake can lower the risk of heart issues and strokes by nearly 20 per cent, as per a study. Those who never use salt in their meals have an 18 per cent lower chance of developing Atrial Fibrillation (AF), a heart condition, compared to regular salt users.&nbsp;
The number of individuals diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation (AF) has surged by 50 per cent over the past decade to reach 1.5 million cases, underlining the importance of dietary factors.
Conducted with data from the UK Biobank involving 500,000 people aged 40 to 70 from 2006 to 2010, the study excluded those with preexisting AF, coronary artery disease, heart failure, or stroke.
Participants' salt usage frequency was categorised as 'never/rarely,' 'sometimes,' 'usually,' or 'always.' After tracking them for 11 years, it was revealed that those who never salted their food had an 18 per cent lower likelihood of experiencing AF. Meanwhile, individuals who occasionally added salt to their meals were 15 per cent less likely to suffer from the condition.
The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology.&nbsp;

For the study, researchers examined more than 5,00,000 middle-aged participants over 9 years. Almost 18,500 premature deaths were recorded after the data was collected between 2006 and 2010.
The findings suggest that people who add extra salt to their food have a 28 per cent increased risk of dying prematurely. Sprinkling salt on meals knocks more than two years off life expectancy so people should consider avoiding seasoning their food, study authors concluded.&nbsp;
As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), high sodium consumption contributes to high blood pressure and increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Salt intake of less than 5 grams per day is recommended for adults as it reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.&nbsp;
