Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday voiced concern over the recent demolition of a Jain temple in Mumbai, accusing the BJP governments of systematically targeting the peaceful Jain community across India.
He was responding to reports in a section of the media that a Jain temple has been demolished in Mumbai.
In a post on X, Yadav addressed the Jain community directly, stating, "In today's times, being a minority in the country is becoming a curse. The fear, insecurity, and uncertainty currently prevailing among the Jain community is deeply concerning and has drawn worldwide attention and condemnation." Highlighting a series of incidents, Yadav claimed these were part of an increasing pattern of aggression towards the community. He referred to the violent attack on Jain monks in Singoli, Madhya Pradesh, a leaked audio clip from Jabalpur allegedly containing objectionable remarks against Jains by BJP members, and the demolition of a Jain temple in Mumbai, where sacred idols, scriptures, and religious books were allegedly disrespected.
Yadav questioned, "Why is it that wherever there is a BJP government, such incidents targeting Jain temples, pilgrimage sites, and institutions occur?" He alleged that BJP-backed elements have been eyeing not just Jain religious and public properties but also their private assets.
Listing past incidents, he recalled the controversy around Shri Girnar Ji in Gujarat, central government's interference at Shri Sammed Shikhar Ji, and the opposition to the installation of a Jain idol in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. He also referred to the 2022 killing of 65-year-old Bhawarlal Jain in Neemuch, Madhya Pradesh, allegedly at the hands of a powerful BJP supporter.
Yadav further alleged that the BJP views the Jain community only through the lens of donations and votes. "Does the BJP believe our importance lies only in giving donations? Who will protect our religion and community?" he asked.
"Rebuilding a temple cannot undo the insult caused to our idols, scriptures, and sentiments." Praising the Jain philosophy of non-violence, co-existence, and compassion, Yadav said, "Jainism has long stood as a model of tolerance and morality, contributing immensely to India's culture, economy, and education." He assured the community of support, saying the Jain community may be numerically small but is a part of the broader PDA (Pichhda-Dalit-Alpsankhyak) alliance representing 90 per cent of the population.
"These discouraging actions by those in power will not weaken the Jain community. We stand united with them in this difficult time." The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister ended his message with a sharp remark: "The Jain community must remember - BJP is loyal to no one."

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party, accusing it of glorifying Mughal ruler Aurangzeb while disregarding India's cultural and spiritual heritage.
"It is unfortunate that the Samajwadi Party considers Aurangzeb as its ideal. Even Aurangzeb's father, Shah Jahan, wrote in his autobiography that he wished no one would ever have such a wretched son," Adityanath said in the Legislative Council.
His scathing attack comes amid an ongoing controversy in Maharashtra over Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Abu Azmi's remarks.
Azmi was on Wednesday suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly till the end of the ongoing Budget Session over his remarks eulogising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
The chief minister criticized the Samajwadi Party's deviation from the principles of socialist leader Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, who upheld India's cultural unity despite being a political rival of the Congress.
"I want to tell my friends in the Samajwadi Party --even if you do not take pride in India's heritage, at least follow the ideology of the leader whose name you use for political gain," Adityanath said.
Quoting Dr Lohia, Adityanath added, "Lohia believed that India stands on three pillars -- Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. As long as Indians revere these great figures, no power in the world can stop India from remaining India."
The chief minister alleged the Samajwadi Party's purpose now seems to be to oppose India's cultural traditions.
"Today the Samajwadi Party has strayed so far from Lohia's ideology that attacking the legacies of Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva has become its primary goal," he said.
Referring to Aurangzeb's reign, the chief minister said, "Aurangzeb imprisoned his own father Shah Jahan in Agra Fort, depriving him of water and left him to suffer."
"If the Samajwadi Party feels proud of Aurangzeb, they should visit a library in Patna and read Shah Jahan's autobiography, where he laments that even a Hindu son is better than Aurangzeb because a Hindu serves his elderly parents in their lifetime, performs their last rites with devotion, and offers water for their souls. Meanwhile, Aurangzeb left his own father to die of thirst," Adityanath said.
"No civilized Muslim today names their son Aurangzeb because they know that a person's deeds define them. 'Yatha naam tatha kaam' (as the name, so the deed)," he added.
Demanding the Samajwadi Party to clarify its position, the chief minister asked why it venerates a ruler, who imposed jizya tax, persecuted non-Muslims and attempted to Islamize India.
"The SP must answer whether it truly considers a tyrant like Aurangzeb its role model, a ruler who attacked India's faith and traditions," Adityanath said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the Milkipur Assembly bypoll, marking a significant political win.
BJP candidate Chandrabhanu Paswan triumphed over Samajwadi Party's (SP) Ajit Prasad by an overwhelming margin of 61,710 votes.
The bypoll was necessitated after former MLA Awadhesh Prasad vacated the seat following his victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Faizabad, which includes the Ayodhya assembly segment.
Despite its historic connection to the region, the BJP had lost Faizabad within just five months of the consecration of the Ram Temple.&nbsp;
In the bypoll, SP fielded Prasad&rsquo;s son as its candidate, but he managed only 84,687 votes&mdash;falling short by over 60,000 votes compared to Paswan, who secured 1,46,397 votes.
Following BJP&rsquo;s landslide victory, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took aim at the Samajwadi Party, asserting that the election result signaled the end of dynastic politics and misinformation.

"The results of Milkipur by-elections will put a full stop to the politics of 'pariwarwad' and lies...The people have made it clear that no matter how much propaganda is done by the Samajwadi Party, the public is going to punish them," CM Yogi stated.
On the other hand, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of manipulating the electoral process to secure the win.
"BJP cannot face the growing power of PDA on the basis of votes, that is why it tries to win by misusing the electoral machinery. The level of manipulation of officials required to carry out such electoral fraud may be possible in one assembly constituency, but this 'four hundred BC' will not work in 403 assemblies. BJP members also know this, that is why BJP members postponed the by-election of Milkipur. PDA means 90% of the people have seen this fraud with their own eyes," Yadav wrote on X.
Labeling the victory as illegitimate, Yadav further remarked:

"This is a false victory, which the BJP will never be able to celebrate by looking into their own eyes in the mirror. Their guilt and fear of future defeat will keep them awake," he alleged.
BJP&rsquo;s strong performance in Milkipur comes on the heels of its massive victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, where the party ended AAP&rsquo;s decade-long rule and returned to power after 27 years.
The win in Delhi reinforced the BJP&rsquo;s growing electoral dominance and was widely credited to Prime Minister Narendra Modi&rsquo;s leadership and Home Minister Amit Shah&rsquo;s strategic planning.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday declared that his party will align with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, asserting that AAP holds more strength in the region compared to the Congress.
Speaking to ANI, Yadav said, "The regional party fighting against the BJP should be supported by the leaders of the INDIA alliance. AAP and Congress are fighting against each other in Delhi. AAP is strong and we have decided to stand with them. The question is about Delhi and our goal is that the BJP gets defeated. Congress and AAP have the same goal too."

Yadav also reassured that the INDIA alliance remains intact. He remarked, "The INDIA alliance is intact. I remember when the INDIA alliance was formed, it was decided that wherever a regional party was strong, the alliance would extend support to them."
Meanwhile, D Raja, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India, acknowledged the current disarray within the INDIA alliance post the 2024 general elections. Speaking to ANI, Raja commented, "It is a fact that Opposition is divided. It is known to people that in Delhi, the Assembly election AAP is contesting on its own, Congress is contesting on its own, Left parties are contesting wherever they are capable of putting up a fight and among other parties, certain parties have declared support to AAP. So, it is a fact that INDIA bloc stands divided."
On the other hand, the BJP has been critical of the INDIA alliance's lack of unity and direction. Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the alliance of being in disarray, stating, "Today the INDIA alliance has completely disintegrated. Mumbai is going to have elections and Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress are preparing to contest alone. Just like you gave us a grand victory in Maharashtra, in the same way, BJP government is going to be formed."
The Delhi assembly elections will be held on February 5, with the counting of votes taking place on February 8. The AAP has already declared candidates for all 70 assembly seats, while the BJP has announced its candidates for 59 seats. The last date for filing nominations is January 17, with scrutiny scheduled for January 18, and withdrawal of candidacies can be done until January 20. Despite having ruled Delhi for 15 years, the Congress has struggled in the past two elections, failing to secure any seats. In contrast, the AAP dominated the 2020 assembly elections, winning 62 out of 70 seats, leaving the BJP with just eight.

After the grand opening of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expected a resounding victory in the Lok Sabha polls, especially in heartland Uttar Pradesh.
But with five phases of voting completed, and the focus shifting to Eastern UP, the election is no longer a foregone conclusion.
BJP had swept most of Eastern UP in 2019, but the 'Modi magic' seems to be wearing off in the region, with increasing interest in developmental issues.
The INDIA bloc, led by the Samajwadi Party and the Congress in the state, has seized this opportunity. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Gandhi siblings Rahul and Priyanka have relentlessly raised the issues of unemployment and inflation at every rally.
Large parts of Eastern UP are backward and poverty-stricken. In the hope of winning over these voters, Akhilesh has stitched together the PDA (Pichada, Dalit, Alpasankhyak) strategy. The SP chief hopes to expand his support base from the controversial Muslim-Yadav vote bank with the rainbow coalition of OBCs, Scheduled Castes and minorities.&nbsp;
Traditionally, Dalits have voted for the BSP, and the non-Yadav OBCs for the BJP. With BSP no longer a serious contender, and BJP doubling-down on Hindutva politics, Akhilesh is positioning himself as a warrior for social justice.
Thus the warning that BJP plans to change the Constitution and take away their rights, and the promise to remove the 50 per cent cap on reservations.&nbsp;
However, the saffron party claims it's the SP and the Congress that wants to change the Constitution, by introducing religion-based reservations for the Muslim population.
By underscoring the Hindu-Muslim poll plank, the BJP signals confidence that 'Ram' will get them over the finish line.

"Honorable National President Shri Akhilesh Yadav will file nomination papers as Samajwadi Party candidate from Kannauj Lok Sabha tomorrow at 12 noon," the party said in a post on X.
Two days ago, the SP had named Tej Pratap Yadav as its candidate from the seat, for which nominations will start on Thursday.
Tej Pratap was the SP MP from Mainpuri between 2014 and 2019. He is Akhilesh Yadav's nephew and also the son-in-law of RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav.
The switch in candidates is said be the result of a demand from the cadre that the party chief contest the family seat.&nbsp;
Kannauj had been a Samajwadi Party stronghold until the previous parliamentary election.
Akhilesh had won from the seat for the first time in 2000. Later, he represented the constituency in 2004 and 2009. He left the seat after he became chief minister in 2012, and his wife Dimple Yadav won the by-election unopposed. Later, Dimple won from the seat in 2014 but she lost to BJP's Subrat Pathak in 2019.
The party chief getting down in the battlefield sends a clear message that SP intends to win back its bastion.
"The question here is of historic victory from the seat. The BJP will become history in this election as people have made up their mind for INDIA bloc. People are going to vote against the NDA. PDA (picchde, Dalit, alpsankhyak) will defeat the NDA this time," Akhilesh said, hours before the announcement was made.
Kannauj will vote in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 13.

A dominant opposition in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party released its manifesto on April 10 in the build up to the Lok Sabha elections. Some elements of the party&rsquo;s manifesto for the 80-seat state overlaps with the promises made by Congress, an INDIA bloc ally of the Akhilesh Yadav-led party.
Both political heavyweights promised a caste census by 2025, removal of the Agnipath scheme and providing farmers with a Minimum Support Price. Caste census has been a point of friction between the BJP and the INDIA bloc, which wishes to adjust quotas for marginalised communities.
The 20-page document from the SP has called for a PDA government this time. PDA is an acronym for Pichde (backward classes), Dalit and Alpasankhyak (minorities) that was coined by Yadav.
The party also promised to restore the old pension scheme, ensure the participation of all sections of society in the private sector and completely eliminate poverty by 2029.
The other promises made in the manifesto are to stop privatisation and retrenchment of central and state public sector units and to set up smart village clusters across the country to be operated through the Smart Village Cluster Development Authority.
The SP is contesting 62 out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh as part of the alliance, while the Congress is contesting 17 seats. The Bhadohi Lok Sabha seat has been given to Trinamool Congress.

Days ahead of the Lok Sabha Election 2024, Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav has landed in trouble for allegedly bullying voters in Uttar Pradesh's Budaun. In a viral video, Shivpal Yadav was seen on stage and threatening voters to vote for him.&nbsp;

In a big setback for the Samajwadi Party in the Rajya Sabha elections, the party's chief whip in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Manoj Kumar Pandey resigned before voting commenced.
Pandey was among eight MLAs who skipped a dinner hosted by party chief Akhilesh Yadav last night. Mukesh Verma, Maharaji Prajapati, Pooja Pal, Rakesh Pandey, Vinod Chaturvedi, Rakesh Pratap Singh and Abhay Singh were the others absent from the meeting.&nbsp;
Ten Rajya Sabha seats are up for grabs from UP, and SP candidates were expected to win three of them. However, the BJP fielded eight candidates, setting the stage for a strong contest for one seat.&nbsp;
Speaking to reporters amid fears of cross-voting, Yadav said, "Those who wanted to profit from the situation will go. Those who were made promises will go."
Citing the example of Chandigarh Mayoral elections, Yadav slammed the BJP saying it would adopt any means to win elections.
The BJP and the SP are the two largest parties in the 403-member state assembly with 252 and 108 MLAs, respectively. The Congress, an alliance partner of the SP, has two seats.
BJP ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) has 13 seats, NISHAD Party has six seats, RLD has nine, SBSP six, Jansatta Dal Loktantrik two and the BSP has one seat. Four seats are currently vacant.
BJP has fielded former Union minister RPN Singh, former MP Chaudhary Tejveer Singh, general secretary of the party's Uttar Pradesh unit Amarpal Maurya, former state minister Sangeeta Balwant, party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, former MLA Sadhna Singh, former Agra mayor Naveen Jain and industrialist Sanjay Seth.
The Samajwadi Party has fielded actor-MP Jaya Bachchan, retired IAS officer Alok Ranjan and Dalit leader Ramji Lal Suman.

SP leader Dimple Yadav, meanwhile, said there should not be any further delay in deciding candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, and stressed that the upcoming polls will be about "saving the Constitution".
"This is an important election. It is an election to save the Constitution. There should not be any further delay," she said.
"Election is fought at the grassroots level. If candidates are decided in time they will get time to put up a strong fight against the BJP," she said.
Asked about the possibility of the BSP joining the alliance in Uttar Pradesh, she said, "Top leadership will decide that." The SP on Tuesday announced its first list of 16 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sitting MP Dimple Yadav has been fielded from Mainpuri, while party MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq will contest from Sambhal.
BSP Chief Mayawati had announced in January that her party will go solo in the Lok Sabha polls but did not rule out a post-poll alliance.

Uttar Pradesh Police in a joint operation have arrested three persons, including a Samajwadi Party leader from Mathura, accused of running an alleged cybercrime racket under the guise of a public service centre.
Samajwadi Party leader Munna Malik and two associates Kamaruddin and Ravi have been arrested, according to the police.
SSP Shailesh Kumar Pandey said, "Munna Malik's associate Ravi used to operate a cyber cafe and public service centre, which used to make polymer impressions of the Aadhar card and thumb of the visiting customers and give it to interstate cyber criminals and ration dealers."
"Police had been receiving information for a long time that incidents of fake Aadhaar cards and cyber crimes were being carried out through Jan Seva Kendra. City Kotwali Police and SWAT team took action and arrested SP leader Councilor Munna Malik as well as Kamaruddin. Ravi has been arrested and sent to jail. The police have recovered fake coins, a letter pad, a laptop, 40 copies of Aadhaar cards, about 140 duplicate thumb impressions, two thumb readers, an ATM swipe machine and cash," said Shailesh Kumar Pandey.
They also used these Aadhaar cards to provide fake SIM cards to cyber criminals and to make fake passports.
"A large number of Aadhaar cards have been purchased and they have been used to commit cyber fraud incidents, the police will soon arrest other people associated with this gang," added the police.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.

Khan's counsel Vinod Sharma said, "We have been acquitted in the hate speech case. We are happy that we have got justice." "Our contention that we had been framed in the case has been upheld by the court, and the judgement is in our favour," Sharma added.
After Khan's membership to the assembly was disqualified, a by-election was held in the Rampur Sadar seat. BJP candidate Akash Saxena defeated the SP's Asim Raja, a close aide of Khan, in the polls.&nbsp;

Two women have died and two more people are still feared trapped a day after a multi-storey building collapsed in Lucknow.
Rescue personnel drawn from various agencies have been working round the clock since the building collapse in the Hazratganj area in the Uttar Pradesh capital Tuesday evening and the hope of pulling out anyone alive from the debris is diminishing by the minute.
The deceased were identified as Samajwadi Party spokesperson Abbas Haider's wife Uzma Haider and mother Begum Haider.
Begum Haider, 87, who was pulled out of the debris Wednesday morning after a nightlong rescue operation, was rushed to a hospital, where she died.
It seems that she had suffered internal injuries, State Director General of Police D S Chouhan told reporters.
Uzma Haider, 30, died at the civil hospital, Health Minister Brajesh Pathak told PTI.

A four-storey residential building collapsed in Lucknow's Hazratganj on 24 January. The structure was illegal and its map was "not passed", Lucknow divisional commissioner Roshan Jacob as quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
