Yadav&rsquo;s endorsement comes after the Trinamool Congress intensified its push for Banerjee&rsquo;s leadership, with MP Kirti Azad calling her the most suitable candidate due to her consistent victories over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal.
Banerjee, who has expressed interest in heading the alliance, also emphasized her readiness to lead. &ldquo;If given the opportunity, I would ensure its smooth functioning. I don&rsquo;t want to go outside West Bengal, but I can run it from here,&rdquo; Banerjee said in an interview on December 6.
The leadership question has gained prominence following the opposition bloc&rsquo;s electoral setbacks. While many in the alliance, including NCP's Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, have expressed support for Banerjee&rsquo;s leadership, a formal decision is yet to be made.
This isn&rsquo;t the first time Lalu Yadav has backed Banerjee. In a 2023 INDIA bloc meeting ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Yadav criticized Left and Congress leaders in West Bengal for their continuous criticism of the TMC leader.

"BJP doesn't have numbers. They want to cobble up support and give an unstable government. Modi can't run this (coalition) type of government. Modi was overconfident of his ability. &nbsp;Throwing promises such as Modi sarkar, Modi ki guarantee, and what not. Now he to get support. If they try to form a coalition, then it won't last long. We have the mandate. We still have 250 MPs, according to our calculation. The figures shown on TV are false. "
When asked about Naidu and Kumar pledging support to the NDA, Raut said, "Naidu and Kumar are friends with all. I don't think they would join the party which can put the democratic institutions in jeopardy."
Talking to reporters, Raut said his party will not oppose if Congress leader Rahul Gandhi decides to lead the INDIA bloc government and be the prime ministerial face.
The INDIA bloc leaders will meet in New Delhi on Wednesday to discuss the further course of action.Raut also said PM Modi should accept that he has faced moral defeat as his party did not get a majority to form the government and that the Modi brand is now finished.
"Chandrababu and Nitish Kumar have to decide whether they want to go with an autocrat and work in a democratic system. I don't think they will go with an autocrat," Raut said.
"Modi ji is not forming a government for the third time," he claimed.
As per the Lok Sabha election results, the BJP has bagged 240 seats, 32 short of an absolute majority.
With support from key allies N Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Nitish Kumar's JD(U), which won 16 and 12 seats in Andhra Pradesh and Bihar, respectively, and other alliance partners, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) crossed the halfway mark.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut asserted on Friday that his party would contest in 23 of the 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra next year and said their talks with the Congress on seat-sharing has to start from zero as it has "not won any seat" in the state.
Talking to reporters, Raut said discussions on the seats won by the Shiv Sena, the Congress and NCP will be held later.
In the 2019 general elections, the undivided Shiv Sena under Uddhav Thackeray had contested 23 seats and won 18. However, it split last year after Shinde rebelled against Thackeray. Later, the Election Commission allowed the Shinde faction to keep the name &lsquo;Shiv Sena&rsquo;.
While the NCP under Sharad Pawar won four seats in the last Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had bagged just one seat. Its lone MP from Chandrapur, Balu Dhanorkar, died earlier this year.
Raut said the Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders, including Thackeray, have been holding talks with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal.
&ldquo;We have said that we have been contesting 23 seats in Maharashtra and (we will also contest) Dadra Nagar Haveli (as Sena has a sitting MP from there),&rdquo; he said, stressing that &ldquo;Shiv Sena is the biggest party&rdquo; in Maharashtra. Congress is a national party, he said.
&ldquo;We have decided that seats won by us will be discussed later. The Congress does not figure in it as it has not won any seat in Maharashtra. So talks with the Congress have to start from zero in the state,&rdquo; Raut said.
Taking a swipe at state Congress leaders for their remarks that the Shiv Sena has now split, Raut said though the Congress did not break it lost polls in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
&ldquo;A party's (strength) is (tested) on the ground. Our party workers are with us. Even if our party split, we won the Andheri assembly bypoll and you (the Congress) won the Kasba Peth assembly bypoll (in Pune) with our support,&rdquo; Raut said.
Former Maharashtra Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam hit back at Raut, saying the Shiv Sena (UBT) cannot win any seat on its own. It needs the Congress and vice versa, Nirupam said.
Nirupam said that out of the 18 seats won by the undivided Shiv Sena last time, more than a dozen MPs have &ldquo;deserted&rdquo; the Uddhav Thackeray camp.
&ldquo;They don&rsquo;t even have the guarantee whether the remaining MPs will stay with them or not,&rdquo; Nirupam said.
Raut said Congress remains an important part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi and the three parties &ndash; Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP faction under Sharad Pawar &ndash; will contest together.&nbsp;

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has been booked for allegedly writing an objectionable article against PM Modi in party mouthpiece Saamana. The charges include sedition.

The Yavatmal police have registered an FIR against Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on charge of sedition and other offences for writing an alleged objectionable article against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana', a senior official said on Tuesday.
The case is based on a complaint filed by BJP's Yavatmal district coordinator Nitin Bhutada against Rajya Sabha member Raut, who is the executive editor of Saamana, the official said.
In the complaint, Bhutada claimed Raut wrote an objectionable article against PM Modi on December 10.
The case was registered on Monday at Umarkhed police station here against Raut under IPC sections 124 (A) (sedition), 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc) and 505 (2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes), the official said.
"We have registered the case as per the complaint and will conduct a probe into it," he said.&nbsp;

These remarks were made by Raut, a Rajya Sabha member and Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson, on May 12, a day after the Supreme Court pronounced its verdict on the Shiv Sena-centric political imbroglio in Maharashtra.
