After six wrestlers qualified for the upcoming Paris Olympics which is scheduled to take place from 26th July 2024, WFI chief Sanjay Singh has said that the Wrestling Federation of India will conduct fresh trials for the quadrennial event.
He has also stated that all the decisions regarding the selection if wrestlers for Paris 2024 will be taken by WFI and not the IOA (Indian Olympic Association).

Yesterday, Sanjay Singh had said on Sunday that selection trials to pick the final squad will be held early next month.
&ldquo;Selection trials will be held on June 10. Some wrestlers are training overseas and once they return we will hold the trials. It will be in the format as given in our policy where a challenger will be selected from the top four eligible wrestlers and there will be three bouts with the quota winner. The quota winner will have to win once while he gets two opportunities if he loses to the challenger," he said during a media interaction.
Last year, Antim Panghal became the first Indian wrestler to qualify for the Paris Olympics and Vihesh Phogat, Anshu Malik and Reetika Hooda booked their slots during the Asian qualifiers last month.

WFI President Sanjay Singh on Friday assured that the protesting wrestlers' trio of Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik would not face any discrimination and he would personally approach them for appearance in the Olympic Qualifiers trials, which will be held in Maharashtra.
World governing body UWW had lifted the provisional suspension imposed on the WFI with a rider that no wrestler should face discrimination.
Punia, Phogat and Malik had led a protest against former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who they have accused of sexual exploitation of women wrestlers. The elite wresters are also against Sanjay Singh's election as WFI chief, saying that he is a Brij Bhushan loyalist and his election is a threat to women wrestlers.
"We have started planning to take Indian wrestling forward. We will soon organise trials for the Olympic Qualifying events in Maharashtra. The state has good infrastructure. I will ask Bajrang, Vinesh and Sakshi to forget everything and start preparing for trials and win medals for the country," Sanjay Singh told PTI.
Malik and Punia have even threatened to restart their protest, saying a federation led by Sanjay Singh is not acceptable. They have even written to the UWW seeking help.
"I will send all three wrestlers emails, whatsapp message and, if need be, I will call them. I will even ask Sakshi to reconsider her decision to retire and give it one more shot to win an Olympic medal. They will not face any discrimination," he added.
So far, India have locked Paris Olympics quota in women's 53kg category through Antim Panghal.
Indians can qualify in 17 more weight categories across men's freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling.
The wrestlers have two final chances to earn qualification through Asian Qualifying event in Bishkek from April 19-21 and World Qualifier in Istanbul from May 9-12.
"We told UWW that the suspension on WFI was imposed for not holding elections and now that the elections have been held, our status should be restored. We told them how the junior wrestlers are suffering and how India is unrepresented in many weight categories at international events without a proper federation in place.
"They discussed the matter with the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and with the UWW Board on February 9. They agreed with our viewpoint and lifted the temporary suspension. Now there should not be any confusion about who the wrestlers should approach," said Sanjay.
National camps may move to new venues
The WFI President also hinted that the national camp for both men and women could be moved to a new venue.
Earlier, SAI centres in Sonepat (men) and Lucknow (women) were the venues for the camps.
"We feel Maharashtra has good infrastructure for men's national camp. Let's see if we can move it there. We will discuss it with the government. The SAI centres are under the government, so we need their permission if the camps have to be held at SAI centres. If we do not get permission then other arrangements have to be made," the WFI President said

The Sports Ministry has maintained that the Nationals organised by WFI will not be recognised.

The Sports Ministry on Tuesday warned of legal action against suspended Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Singh for making "absolutely baseless and mischievous" claims with regard to government recognition to WFI and reiterated that any tournament organised by the body shall be treated as "unsanctioned".
Last Saturday, Sanjay Singh claimed that around 700 grapplers would participate in the Senior National Championship in Pune from January 29-31, a statement that did not go down well with the ministry, which had suspended the national federation just three days after the formation of its new body for violating its own constitution.
"...Certain claims are being made by you pertaining to the recognition of the currently under-suspension Executive Committee of the WFI and about the competitions being held by you at Pune are being made, which are again absolutely baseless and mischievous," the ministry said in the letter addressed to Sanjay Singh.
"The Ministry has already vide its letter dated 7.1.2024, addressed to you and copies of which were endorsed to affiliate units of WFI and State Governments/Union Territories, made this entire issue categorically clear.
"It is once again informed that any championships or competitions organized by the suspended Executive Committee members of WFI, will be treated as unsanctioned and unrecognized competitions," the ministry added in the letter.
The national body was suspended by the Sports Ministry on December 24, just three days after it held its election for violating its own constitution after it announced to host the 2023 age group nationals in Gonda, UP in the last week of December.
The Sports Ministry had since maintained that the Nationals organised by WFI will not be recognised.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has since set up an ad-hoc committee to look into the day-to-day affairs of WFI on the directive of Sports Ministry.
"In light of the above, you are hereby strongly advised to desist from making any further unsubstantiated claims regarding the status of the Wrestling Federation of India.
"Please be advised that failure to adhere to this caution may compel the Ministry to consider further legal action, including but not limited to legal proceedings for spreading misinformation and unsubstantiated claims and any other relevant charges as per the laws of the country," the ministry said.
The ministry letter further stated that Sanjay Singh's remarks are "causing confusion and anxiety among the athletes and others concerned with wrestling".
The ad-hoc body, led by Bhupendra Singh Bajwa, had announced a separate senior national championships to be held in Jaipur from February 2-5.
The Sports Ministry suspended the WFI after its newly elected body made a "hasty announcement" of organising the U-15 and U-20 nationals "without giving sufficient notice to wrestlers" to prepare.
The WFI elections were held on December 21 with Sanjay Singh, a loyalist of former president Brij Bhushan, and his panel winning the polls by big margins.
Brij Bhushan was accused of sexual harassment by star wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik.
The move to suspend the WFI came after Sakshi announced her retirement from wrestling at a press briefing.
Later, protesting the election of Sanjay Singh as the new WFI chief, Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia returned his Padma Shri.&nbsp;

The AAP's Rajya Sabha nominees in Delhi -- Sanjay Singh, N D Gupta and Swati Maliwal -- have been elected unopposed, officials said on Friday.
No candidate from any other party filed nomination for the elections.
"All three Rajya Sabha nominees have been elected unopposed. And, certificates have also been issued today," a senior official in the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office told PTI.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the newly elected MPs of the party.
"Many congratulations and best wishes to the three leaders of Aam Aadmi Party elected to Rajya Sabha. I am confident that you will strongly raise the issues of the common people in Parliament and fight for the rights of the people of Delhi," Kejriwal, who is also the AAP national convener, said in a post on X in Hindi.
The last date for filing nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections was January 9 while the scrutiny of nominations took place on January 10. The last date for the withdrawal of candidature was January 12.
Singh, Gupta, and former Delhi Commission for Women chief Maliwal had filed their nominations for the January 19 Rajya Sabha elections here on January 8.
Outside Delhi Transport Department's office in Civil Lines here, scores of AAP supporters had gathered to cheer Gupta, Maliwal, and Anita Singh, the wife of Sanjay Singh. All three of them, carrying certificates, also posed for pictures for mediapersons.
"A new responsibility is starting from today. Thousands of women came today to encourage. I assure all the people of Delhi that I will serve you with true devotion and honesty. Thank you honorable Chief Minister @ArvindKejriwal," Maliwal posted on X, and also shared a picture of her receiving her certificate.
The AAP had nominated Maliwal as its Rajya Sabha candidate, and renominated Singh and Gupta for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.
The six-year term of Singh, N D Gupta and Sushil Kumar Gupta ends on January 27. Maliwal's name was nominated by the party to replace Sushil Gupta.
Singh, who is in jail in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, had arrived at the transport department office amid tight security to file his nomination papers.
A senior official of Delhi Prisons said Singh was taken to the transport department office, where he received his certificate.
On Friday, his wife Anita Singh told reporters that her husband will emerge stronger.
"'Sher bahar aa gaya hai, aur phir se bahar aayega' (The lion has come out, and will come out again," she said as AAP supporters raised 'Sanjay bhiaya sher hain' slogan.&nbsp;

The AAP had on Friday nominated Maliwal as its Rajya Sabha candidate, and renominated Singh and N D Gupta for a second term in the Upper House of Parliament.
The six-year term of Singh, N D Gupta and Sushil Kumar Gupta ends on January 27. Maliwal's name has been nominated by the party to replace Sushil Gupta.
Maliwal, N D Gupta and Singh filed their nominations at the Delhi transport commissioner's office in Civil Lines, the officials said.
The election, if necessary, to fill up the three vacancies will be held on January 19. The last date for filing nominations is January 9 while the scrutiny of nominations will take place on January 10. The last date for the withdrawal of candidature is January 12.
Maliwal resigned as the DCW chairperson soon after the AAP named her as its Rajya Sabha candidate on Friday.
After filing her nomination, Maliwal said, "I have just filed the nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections and I am very emotional. I want to thank Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh from the bottom of my heart for sending a common woman like me to the Rajya Sabha." She said her eight-year stint as the DCW chief was like 'tapasya' and she handled 1,70,000 cases during this time.
"I worked day and night... The voice that was earlier heard in the streets will now resonate in the House for women, youths, farmers and for every citizen of the country," she said.
Maliwal said she hoped that Singh, who is in jail in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy, would soon return to the Rajya Sabha.
On bidding adieu to the DCW, she said she had not been able to sleep since Friday.
"The DCW is an important part of my life. Wherever I am, I can never separate myself from the DCW," she said.

Newly-elected WFI president Sanjay Singh on Thursday said that the sports ministry did not follow "proper procedure" while suspending the wrestling national body and will challenge the government's decision in a court.
The sports ministry on Sunday suspended the WFI, three days after its elections were held, for flouting its own constitution while taking certain decisions, including the announcement of U-15 and U-20 National Championships.
Sanjay, however, said that his "autonomous" and "democratically elected" body could not have been suspended by the government without hearing the WFI's side of the story.
"We have won the elections (of WFI) democratically. The returning officer was the retired chief justice of J&amp;K High Court, there were observers from the IOA and UWW (United World Wrestling). There were 22 state units (three absent out of 25 state associations) taking part in the elections, 47 votes were polled out of which I got 40," Sanjay told PTI.
"After all these, if you say we are suspended, we are not going to accept it. A democratically-elected body was not given a chance to explain its position which is against the principle of natural justice which everybody is entitled to under the Constitution of India." Asked what is the way forward for his body, he said, "WFI is an autonomous body and the government has not followed proper procedure. We are going to talk to the government and if it (government) does not take back the suspension, we are taking legal opinion and going to court." He said since the WFI is contesting the suspension, he does not accept the three-member ad-hoc committee formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday to run the day-to-day affairs of the national sports body.
'Bajrang, Vinesh and Sakshi playing politics'&nbsp;
He said the visit by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in an akhada in Haryana to meet Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia made it clear that the trio, who led the five-month-long protest accusing former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually harassing women grapplers, were playing politics.
"It is clear that they (Bajrang, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik) are being backed by the Congress, tool-kit gang and left parties. These three are playing on the lap of these political parties," said Sanjay, a close aide of Brij Bhushan.
"Please tell me any fourth wrestler who is opposing the WFI other than these three. These three don't want the junior wrestlers to progress, they want to take away the rights of junior wrestlers.
"Bajrang had gone (to the Hangzhou Asian Games) without taking part in the trials and he came back with a 10-0 loss. They are not in wrestling, they are in politics. Please come forward if you are concerned about wrestling, the road is clear for you, but if you want to do politics, please do it in the open." Sanjay also took a dig at Bajrang for leaving his Padma Shri on the road after he decided to return it to the government.
"It may be a personal matter, but the country's emotions are associated in Khel Ratna, it's not for a single person, but belongs to the whole society. Padma Shri is not something which should be put on a road." After the election of Sanjay as WFI chief, Sakshi quit the sport while Bajrang decided to return his Padma Shri. Vinesh followed suit by returning her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award.
'Hoping that UWW will lift ban on WFI' 
Sanjay also claimed that he had written a letter to the United World Wrestling requesting lifting of the ban imposed on WFI, and he is hopeful of a favourable decision from the international parent body.
"We have written to the UWW requesting to lift the ban imposed on the WFI, as the elections were held democratically. Office holidays are going on (in Europe) so may take some days." He also claimed that the newly-elected office bearers did not violate any constitutional provision of the WFI while announcing dates and venue of the U-15 and U-20 National Championships in Gonda -- Brij Bhushan's Lok Sabha constituency -- after the December 21 elections.
"There was full quorum when we took the decision to hold the U-15 and U-20 Nationals. There was an AGM on the day of the elections, we went to a hotel (in Delhi) and took the decision.
"If the Nationals were not held this year, the future of the young wrestlers would have been spoilt, which it has happened now. They will become overage. Everybody agreed to the venue also." Asked why the newly-elected WFI secretary general Prem Chand Lochab was not involved in the decision making, he said, "We told the secretary general to go there (at the hotel) along with us but he did not come. I don't know what is his intention.
"We followed the WFI Constitution to the full. If we did something (wrong), the government should have asked for an answer from us instead of restraining us from our work. WFI is an autonomous body and we were elected in a democratic way under our (WFI) constitution."

Wrestling Federation of India president Sanjay Singh expressed his disagreement after the Union sports ministry suspended the newly-elected panel.
In a chat with NDTV, he said, 'We will speak to the government first and, if that does not work, I will take legal advice to save my federation. The allegation is that we took the decision to hold the nationals in haste, but it was decided upon after meeting the quorum requirements. The annual general meeting was held and every state had two delegates present for voting.'
'The delegates of all states decided that if the national championships were not held in this calendar year, the future of the wrestlers would be ruined. The certificates that they get are used by them for admissions and jobs, and that is why the decision was taken,' he claimed.
WFI was suspended after just 3 days of the election results. Announcing the suspension, the sports ministry had said the newly elected body 'appears to be (in) complete control of former office bearers in complete disregard to the Sports Code.'
In those 3 days, Olympic medallist Sakshee Malikkh hung up her boots and Bajrang Punia had returned his Padma Shri.
The Sports Ministry then asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up an ad-hoc panel to manage the day-to-day affairs at the WFI.

Top wrestler Bajrang Punia, who along with Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik, had led the agitation against Brij Bhushan had returned his Padma Shri award to the government on Friday in protest over Sanjay Singh. This was a day after Sakshi Malik quit wrestling for the same reason.
The Sports Ministry on Sunday suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) till further orders after the newly-elected body made a "hasty announcement" of organising the U-15 and U-20 nationals "without following due procedure and not giving sufficient notice to wrestlers" for preparations.
The ministry also said the new body was working under the "complete control of former (WFI) office-bearers", which was not in conformity with the National Sports Code.

In the aftermath of Sakshi Malik hanging up her boots and Bajrang Punia returning his Padma Shri following the election of Sanjay Singh as the Wrestling Federation of India President, the Union Sports Ministry on Sunday suspended the newly elected WFI.
Brij Bhushan's close aide Sanjay Singh was recently elected as the WFI chief but his presidency also stands cancelled.
The Sports Ministry suspended the Federation after the newly-elected body made a "hasty announcement" of organising the U-15 and U-20 nationals "without giving sufficient notice to wrestlers" to prepare.
"The new body has not followed the WFI constitution. We have not terminated the Federation but suspended till further orders. They just need to follow the due process and the rules," a sports ministry official told PTI.
The source further explained the reasons for suspension.
"Sanjay Kumar Singh, newly-elected president of WFI announced on 21.12.2023, the day he was elected as president, that U-15 and U-20 nationals for Wrestling will take place in Nandini Nagar, Gonda (UP) before the end of this year.
"This announcement is hasty, without giving sufficient notice to wrestlers who are to take part in the said nationals and without following the provisions of the constitution of WFI.
"As per clause 3 (e) of preamble of constitution of WFI, object of the WFI, among others, is to arrange holding of Senior, Junior and Sub Junior National Championships as per UWW Rules at places selected by the Executive Committee," said the ministry's source.

A Delhi court on Friday extended till November 24 the judicial custody of AAP leader Sanjay Singh, arrested in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise scam.
Special Judge M K Nagpal also allowed Singh to sign three letters addressed to the commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi regarding development work as a Member of Parliament.
The judge also directed the authorities concerned to produce him before a court in Punjab after it was informed that a production warrant had been received from a court in Amritsar in a defamation case.
While being brought to the courtroom, the AAP leader, meanwhile, without naming the BJP, alleged that "they have planned something worse than arresting Arvind Kejriwal".
"There is a big conspiracy to entrap Kejriwal. Not just the arrest, they are going to do something worse with Kejriwal. They will execute something bigger," he told media persons outside the courtroom.
Meanwhile, the judge also allowed co-accused and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is in judicial custody, to visit his ailing wife on Saturday between 10 am and 5 pm under security.
The anti-money laundering agency had arrested Singh on October 4.
The ED has alleged that Singh played a key role in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped policy, which benefited certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers, for monetary considerations.
