Reliance's Jio platform's joint venture with Luxembourg-based SES will soon be able to launch satellite internet in India. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre or IN-SPACe, India's space regulator, has given its approval to the JIO and SES JV to provide gigabit fibre internet which aims to provide satellite-based high speed internet access, reported Reuters. This comes as global companies including Amazon and Elon Musk's Starlink are also looking to launch satellite communication services in India

<h3>Hurdle cleared for Orbit Connect</h3>
Orbit Connect has now received three approvals. Previously in April and June the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre granted authorisation to operate satellites above India. However, further approvals were needed from the country's department of telecom to begin operations.&nbsp;
Reuters quoted consultancy Deloitte and said that India's satellite broadband service market is expected to grow 36% per year over the next five years and reach $1.9 billion by 2030.&nbsp;
<h3>Growing demand for satellite operations</h3>
As per Reuters, Inmarsat, another company hoping to provide high-speed satellite-based internet, has also gotten approval to operate satellites over India. Late last year, Eutelsat's Bharti Enterprises-backed OneWeb received all of its approvals.&nbsp;
"Comparatively low pricing of communication services in India will compel global players to drive innovation to reduce their pricing," IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka told Reuters
The report further said that the race to connect rural areas of the world via space-based internet is accelerating globally. Last week, Sri Lanka gave Starlink preliminary approval to provide internet services there.
<h3>Boost to space sector</h3>
Meanwhile, Reuters further added that IN-SPACe will also soon authorise private companies to operate ground stations which would enable satellite operators to download data as they pass over India.
The government had opened foreign direct investment into the space sector and said that the outside companies could invest in the manufacture of components and systems or sub-systems for satellites up to 100% without approval.&nbsp;
"Last year investments into private companies were $2 million-$7 million. This year they are talking $20 million-$30 million," Pawan Goenka told Reuters.

ISRO welcomed the new year with the launch of its first X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite that would offer insights into celestial objects like black holes, onboard a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket on Monday.
The launch comes after the success of its Gaganyaan Test Vehicle D1 mission in October.
The PSLV-C58 rocket, in its 60th mission carrries primary payload XPoSat and 10 other satellites to be deployed in low earth orbits.
The X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) is aimed to investigate the polarisation of intense X-ray sources in space.
According to ISRO, it is the first dedicated scientific satellite from ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.
Besides ISRO, the US-based National Aeronautics Space Agency (NASA) conducted a similar study -- the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer mission in December 2021 on the remnants of supernova explosions, the particle streams emitted by black holes and other cosmic events.
While space-based X-ray astronomy has been established in India focusing on imaging, and time domain studies, Monday's mission marks a major value-addition to the scientific fraternity, the space agency said.
The objective of the PSLV-C58 mission includes measuring polarisation of X-rays in the energy band 8-30 keV emanating from about 50 potential cosmic sources, to carry out long term spectral and temporal studies of cosmic x-ray sources.
The X-Ray polarisation serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for examining the radiation mechanism and geometry of celestial sources.
The primary payload of XPoSat is POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-Rays) which is designed to measure polarimetry parameters by Raman Research Institute and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing) built by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. The Mission life is about 5 years.
The space-based study of X-Ray polarisation is gaining utmost importance internationally, and in this context, the XPoSat mission would play a significant role, ISRO added.
XPoSat is anticipated to bring substantial benefits to the Astronomy community globally. Apart from its capability of timing and spectroscopy-based observations, the insights derived from X-ray polarisation measurements on celestial objects like black holes, neutron stars, and active galactic nuclei, hold the potential to significantly improve the understanding of their physics.
The mission is poised to play a pivotal role in building expertise in X-Ray polarimetry in India, providing a foundation for future advancements and fostering a collaborative network within the astronomy community.
The 44.4-meter-tall PSLV rocket would first deploy the primary satellite into a 650 km Low Earth Orbit around 21 minutes after lift-off and later the scientists would bring the satellite to a lower altitude of about 350 km by restarting the fourth stage of the vehicle, for conducting the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) experiment.
The payloads are Radiation Shielding Experiment Module by TakeMe2Space, Women Engineered Satellite by LBS Institute of Technology for Women, BeliefSat (an amateur radio satellite) built by K J Somaiya Institute of Technology, Green Impulse Transmitter by Inspecity Space Labs Pvt Ltd, LEATTD -- Launching Expeditions for Aspiring Technologies Technology Demonstrator by Dhruva Space Pvt Ltd, RUDRA 0.3HPGP and ARKA 200 developed by Bellatrix Aerospace Pvt Ltd, Dust Experiment (DEX) built by PRL, ISRO and Fuel Cell Power System and Si based High Energy cell built by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

In the past, ships used to be hidden either by painting fake names on the hulls, or stealing identification of other vessels. Another method was to regularly change the ship's registration. When satellite tracking became common, shady ships simply began switching off the transponder. But this created a problem. Ships with blank gaps in their tracking data found it hard to get credit from banks, and faced other hurdles. This may have led to the rise of fake location technology.
Now let's see how vessels actually transmit fake locations.
Ships use advanced technology to fake satellite signals. This is essentially a replication of VPN apps on mobile phones. The fake signals come either from the ship or from a remote location. Military-grade AIS transponders are also available on the black market. In many cases, ships transmit stolen coordinates of other vessels to make the fake journey look legitimate.
A few spots on the globe appear to be hotspots of this fake location racket.
Chinese vessels are believed to use this technology to hide their illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific. Russian ships do this to allegedly smuggle sanctioned oil and stolen Ukrainian grain. North Korean ships hide their locations to export coal, and import oil in violation of UN sanctions. Ships may use fake locations to buy Iranian oil in violation of US sanctions. It's the same case with Venezuela. Meanwhile, many ships transmitting false locations are registered in Cyprus, to enjoy European financial services and legal safeguards, according to the New York Times.
A bigger emerging threat, especially in tense times like now, is the targeting of naval warships using this technology.
News reports suggest that locations of over 100 warships have been faked since August 2020. False data showed these warships entering disputed waters, or sailing near other countries' naval bases. The fake location data came from shore-based AIS receivers, while satellite data showed the real positions of these warships.
Most of the targeted warships were from NATO, and European fleets. Much of the false data showed the warships near Russian territories. This has sparked suspicion that Russia's prolific hackers may be behind the transmission of fake locations. It could be Moscow's plan to portray Western powers as aggressors.
If the spread of this technology is not stemmed, another big threat may be staring at the world.
Experts feel that this fake location tech is likely to spread to planes soon. Planes use satellite transponders similar to ships. Airplanes transmitting fake locations can be big danger, as they can be used for deadly terror attacks. It would also give a fillip to smuggling, and illegal border crossing.
The onus to take action lies on the United Nations. The UN needs to adopt and enforce stricter rules. Better security protocols for AIS transponder software are needed, apart from improved scrutiny of transponder manufacturers, and officials. A regular detailed analysis of satellite data can help spot defaulters. Finally, strict sanctions need to be imposed on ships and companies found faking locations.
Meanwhile, the Quadrilateral alliance, which includes India, USA, Japan, and Australia, seems to already be on the right track to curb this fake location racket.
The Quad is implementing a satellite surveillance system in the Indo-Pacific. It will monitor radio frequencies, and radar signals to track ships. This would help track ships which even have their AIS transponders switched off, thus sidestepping the fake location tactic. Satellite technology will be used to link surveillance centres in multiple nations in the region. The move is aimed at curbing weapons trafficking, and illegal fishing, mainly by China.
Over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with water. Maritime trade and travel have been common for thousands of years. With modern technology making ships bigger and safer, we now have 70% of global trade by value being carried by sea. If authorities across the world fail to curb fake location technologies, waters of the world might just turn into the wild, wild west.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday said the satellites onboard its maiden Small Satellite Launch Vehicle "are no longer usable" after the SSLV-D1 placed them in an elliptical orbit instead of a circular one.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday said the satellites onboard its maiden Small Satellite Launch Vehicle "are no longer usable" after the SSLV-D1 placed them in an elliptical orbit instead of a circular one.
The space agency said a committee would analyse and make recommendations into today's episode and with the implementation of those recommendations "ISRO will come back soon with SSLV-D2." "SSLV-D1 placed the satellites into 356 km x 76 km elliptical orbit instead of 356 km circular orbit. Satellites are no longer usable. Issue is reasonably identified. Failure of a logic to identify a sensor failure and go for a salvage action caused the deviation," ISRO said in an update on its official Twitter handle.
It added a detailed statement by ISRO Chairman S Somanath will be "uploaded soon." In its maiden SSLV mission, the launch vehicle carried The Earth Observation Satellite EOS-02 and the co-passenger student satellites AzaadiSAT.
SSLV had suffered 'data loss' in its terminal stage, after performing "as expected" in all stages. It had earlier after lifted off from the spaceport here on Sunday morning.

The GSAT-24 satellite, built by ISRO for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), was successfully launched by French company Arianespace from Kourou in French Guiana (South America) on Thursday.

India's latest satellite GSAT-24 successfully launched from French Guiana 

GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite weighing 4180 kg with pan-India coverage for meeting DTH application needs.

The GSAT-24 satellite, built by ISRO for NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), was successfully launched by French company Arianespace from Kourou in French Guiana (South America) on Thursday.
GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite weighing 4180 kg with pan-India coverage for meeting DTH application needs.
It was the first "demand driven" communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL post space sector reforms.
NSIL, a Government of India company under the Department of Space, has leased the entire satellite capacity to Tata Play.

In a milestone move, an IndiGo aircraft successfully landed using India’s own satellite-based navigation system named GAGAN, or GPS-aided GEO Augmented Navigation at Kishangarh airport, Rajasthan. The trial was conducted using GAGAN satellite's signals without needing ground-based navigational infrastructure. 
The IndiGo aircraft flew an aircraft with an Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP) with LPV minima of 250ft, using GAGAN Service, the ministry of civil aviation said.
The decision to lower the height to 250 ft provides a substantial operational benefit in poor weather and low visibility conditions. The new technology will help in landing the aircraft which will help in remote airports, according to the statement by the government.
Thus, any airport which hitherto would require higher visibility minima, will be able to accept aircraft benefitting remote airports which are devoid of precision approach capability equipment, the government statement said.
GAGAN was jointly developed by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The indigenous system will provide lateral and vertical guidance on an approach to aircrafts. Being the first such system developed for India & neighboring countries in equatorial region, the system is also meant to aid during disasters such as floods and earthquakes, added AAI. 
GAGAN is a Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) and its main objectives are to provide Satellite-based Navigation services with accuracy and integrity required for civil aviation applications and to provide better Air Traffic Management over Indian Airspace.

IndiGo became the first airline in the country to land aircraft using the indigenous navigation system GAGAN, according to a statement issued on Thursday.
The flight was conducted using an ATR-72 aircraft and landed at the Kishangarh airport in Rajasthan on Wednesday morning, using GPS-aided geo-augmented navigation (GAGAN), which has been jointly developed by the Centre-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the statement issued by IndiGo said.
With the successful trial, India joined US, Japan and Europe in an exclusive club with their own Satellite Based Augmentation System(SBAS). Some countries are in the process of developing SBAS&nbsp;including China, Russia and South Korea.&nbsp;

GAGAN is used to provide lateral and vertical guidance when an aircraft is approaching a runway for landing. Its precision is especially useful at small airports where the instrument landing system (ILS) has not been installed.
"In India's civil aviation sector, GAGAN will modernise the airspace, reduce flight delays, save fuel and improve flight safety," the statement said.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a mandate for all aircraft registered in India after July 1, 2021 to be fitted with GAGAN equipment, it added.&nbsp;
