Achanta Sharath Kamal's remarkable journey in the Singapore Smash 2024 came to an end as he succumbed to a 1-4 defeat against world No. 6, Felix Lebrun of France in the quarterfinal in Singapore on Friday. Sharath Kamal lost 9-11, 2-11, 7-11, 11-9, 8-11 to Lebrun in the 32-minute encounter.
From the outset, the 17-year-old Lebrun asserted his dominance, capitalising on his youthful vigour and formidable pace to take control of the game. Despite the 41-year-old Sharath's attempts to mount a comeback, the French prodigy proved relentless, securing the first three games with clinical precision.
However, Sharath's resilience shone through as he rallied to claim a hard-fought victory in the fourth set, displaying inspired stroke play and determination. Although ultimately falling short, Sharath's journey to the quarterfinals was nothing short of extraordinary.
Having navigated through the qualifying rounds, Lebrun showcased his prowess by defeating the world No. 22 and world No. 13 en route to the quarters.

India's 41-year-old Sharath Kamal made history by becoming the first Indian male player to reach the quarterfinals of the table tennis world championship after beating Omar Assar of Egypt on Thursday in Singapore Smash.
The Indian player continued his giant-killing run in the Singapore Smash table tennis tournament with a 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 12-10) win over Omar Assar in the men&rsquo;s singles round of 16 match.
Sharath, who is ranked 88th in the world, attacked from the beginning, giving no chance to Omar to settle down. His trademark forehand top-spins and backhand whiplash from the back of the table were in full flow in all three games.
Omar, World No. 22, was circumspect to start with and was content playing counter-attack and block. On the other hand, Sharath Kamal, the reigning Commonwealth Games singles champion, was on the offensive from the beginning.
In the previous two editions of Singapore Smash, Sharath had bowed out in the first round. Sharath is the lowest-ranked men&rsquo;s singles paddler left in the men&rsquo;s singles event. Sharath will next meet the winner of France&rsquo;s Felix Lebrun and Kristian Karlsson of Sweden.

Indian Table Tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal will receive India's most prestigious sports honour, Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, on November 30 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
40-year-old Sharath had a tremendous outing at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he won three Gold medals. He won his second Gold medal in the men's singles event after a gap of 16 years in CWG 2022. He also won Gold in mixed doubles and men's team events.

He'll be awarded the Khel Ratna award, he has already been elected to the IOA's athletes' commission and now Indian Table Tennis star Sharath Kamal has got another major international recognition. 

Sharath Kamal becomes the first Indian to be elected to the Athletes' Commission of the International Table Tennis Federation.

Table Tennis star Achanta Sharath Kamal has been in the news for all the right reasons recently. And now, he has received an international honour no Indian had ever gotten before.
The Indian paddler has become the first player from the country to be elected to the athletes' commission of the global Table Tennis body, the International Table Tennis Federation.
Kamal received the second-highest number of votes in the elections. His 187 votes were only behind Romania's Elizabeta Samara, who bagged 212 votes.&nbsp;
Kamal, who won 3 Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year, will serve on the commission that has a total of 8 athletes(4 men, 4 women) from 2022-2026.
The star Indian paddler said he was humbled by the recognition. Kamal is also the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/sports-news/others-sports/sharath-kamal-to-receive-khel-ratna-award-on-november-30-check-full-list-of-awardees-here-1668439777747">only Indian who's being awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award this year.</a>
In addition, only two days back, he was also chosen as the vice-chairman of the first-ever Athletes' Commission of the Indian Olympic Association, becoming <a href="https://www.editorji.com/sports-news/others-sports/mary-kom-pv-sindhu-mirabai-chanu-sharath-kamal-elected-in-ioa-s-first-ever-athletes-commission-1668482585982">one of only 10 eminent athletes elected to the national Olympic body.</a>

Only 10 candidates filed nominations for the same number of seats in the Athletes Commission and Umesh Sinha, who is also the returning officer of the upcoming IOA elections, declared all of them elected unopposed.

The 10-member commission has 5 male and 5 female members as per the rules.&nbsp; Rani Rampal, MC Mary Kom, Gagan Narang, OP Karahana, Shiva Keshavan, PV Sindhu, Bhavani Devi, Mirabai Chanu, Bajrang Lal Thakkar and Sharath Kamal were elected after the polls. The 2022 Commonwealth Games came to an end on Tuesday evening with a spectacular closing ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.The CWG flag was lowered and handed to Victoria, Australia which will host the next edition of the quadrennial event. Veteran table tennis player Sharath Kamal and ace boxer Nikhat Zareen led the Indian contingent during the closing ceremony.
The ceremony celebrated Birmingham's ethnicity and culture and local bands like Dexy's, Music Youth, and The selector performed. Singapore's Table Tennis player Feng Tianwei was given the David Dixon award before Birmingham-born rock legend Ozzy Osbourne brought down the curtains on the 11-Day long gala.
