In a dramatic development, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, currently exiled in India, launched a scathing attack against the country's interim government leader, Muhammad Yunus. Hasina labeled Yunus a "mobster" and accused him of fostering lawlessness and deploying "terrorists," following her government's ousting.
The interim government swiftly emphasized its commitment to her extradition from India, signaling its intent to hold her accountable within Bangladesh.
Speaking from exile, Hasina recounted her narrow escape from an assassination attempt during the turbulent overthrow of her government, a coup she attributes to a calculated conspiracy by Yunus.
The student-led uprising, initially sparked by a debate over a controversial quota system, swiftly evolved into demands for her resignation, culminating in her downfall on August 5, 2024.
In a recent Zoom call with the widows of four policemen slain during the student protests, Hasina expressed her intent to return and seek justice for the officers' deaths. She alleged Yunus's involvement in dissolving inquiry committees and facilitating chaos, describing the killings of law enforcement officers as part of a sinister strategy to remove her from power.
Through tearful statements, Hasina claimed that the current administration's actions are devastating the nation and vowed to return to ensure accountability. "By the grace of God, I survived to serve a purpose," she declared. "I will return and secure justice on Bangla soil."
Following her live address, the interim administration under Yunus asserted its determination to extradite Hasina for trial, emphasizing this as their highest priority. Shafiqul Alam, Yunus's press secretary, stated that the people and political parties of Bangladesh must decide Awami League's future but stressed that individuals implicated in criminal activities will be prosecuted.
Adding weight to the political turmoil, Alam referred to a report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), which criticizes Hasina's former administration for alleged crimes against humanity. This report, along with advocacy from rights groups, has allegedly increased international pressure on India to facilitate her return.
Meanwhile, the diplomatic ball is now in India's court. Bangladesh's Foreign Office has submitted a formal request for Hasina's deportation, to which New Delhi has acknowledged receipt but has not yet responded. The international community watches closely as the political crisis in Bangladesh continues to unfold.

Violent protests continue in Bangladesh as demonstrators demolish Sheikh Mujibur Rahman&rsquo;s house, set fire to Sheikh Hasina&rsquo;s residence, and remove Mujib&rsquo;s name from institutions.

Protesters in Bangladesh on Thursday, demolished the former residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country&rsquo;s founding father, after vandalizing and setting it on fire the night before.
Demonstrators also targeted homes of Awami League leaders and defaced murals of Mujibur Rahman following a live online address by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Thousands gathered on Wednesday outside Mujibur Rahman&rsquo;s house in Dhaka&rsquo;s Dhanmondi area, which had been converted into a memorial museum. The protest was organized under the banner of a "Bulldozer Procession," widely circulated on social media ahead of Hasina&rsquo;s speech.
Shortly after, an excavator began tearing down the residence, and by Thursday morning, the demolition continued using heavy machinery.
According to The Daily Star, protesters also torched Hasina&rsquo;s long-time residence, Sudha Sadan, on Wednesday night. The house had been vacated since Hasina was ousted on August 5.
Elsewhere in Dhaka, demonstrators set fire to the residence of deceased nuclear scientist Wajed Mian, which previously served as Hasina&rsquo;s political office. Similar acts of destruction spread across Bangladesh, with the homes of Hasina&rsquo;s relatives, including Sheikh Helal Uddin and Sheikh Salauddin Jewel in Khulna, also being demolished.
Crowds chanted slogans such as &ldquo;Delhi or Dhaka &mdash; Dhaka, Dhaka&rdquo; and &ldquo;Down with Mujibism.&rdquo;
Khulna Metropolitan Police official Ahsan Habib acknowledged reports of the incidents but stated, "I have seen the news of the incident on Facebook, but I don't have further information."
At Dhaka University, student protesters removed Mujibur Rahman&rsquo;s name from the Bangabandhu Hall, while Awami League leaders&rsquo; homes in Kushtia and other regions were attacked.
In Chattogram, demonstrators staged a torch procession against Hasina&rsquo;s speech before vandalizing murals of Mujib at Chittagong Medical College and Jamal Khan. Protests also erupted in Sylhet, Rangpur, and Mymensingh, where various Mujib murals were defaced or destroyed.
The violence escalated after Anti-Discrimination Students Movement leader Hasnat Abdullah posted on Facebook: "Tonight, Bangladesh will be liberated from the place of pilgrimage for fascism."
During her speech, Hasina urged supporters to resist the current regime, saying, &ldquo;They are yet to have the strength to destroy the national flag, the constitution, and the independence that we earned at the cost of lives of millions of martyrs with a bulldozer.&rdquo; She directly referred to Professor Muhammad Yunus&rsquo;s interim government, which took power after her ousting.
Hasina continued, &ldquo;They can demolish a building, but not the history... but they must also remember that history takes its revenge.&rdquo;
In an emotional moment, Hasina compared the destruction to events during the 1971 Liberation War, stating, &ldquo;Pakistani troops looted the house, but they did not demolish or set it on fire. Today, this house is being demolished. What crime had it committed? Why were they so afraid of the house? I seek justice from the people of the country. Didn&rsquo;t I do anything for you?&rdquo;
National Citizens' Committee leader Ali Ahsan Zonaed, a key figure in the student movement, marked the protests as a milestone, writing, &ldquo;Today marks the completion of six months of the July Uprising. On this historic day, the butcher of Bengal, Hasina, decided to come out in public. What a day she has chosen! Now is the time for us to wake up again. Let&rsquo;s eliminate all fascist elements on this historic day.&rdquo;
Student activists previously vowed to scrap Bangladesh&rsquo;s 1972 Constitution, calling it the "Mujibist constitution." Some far-right groups have also advocated for changing the national anthem, which was adopted under Mujib&rsquo;s leadership.
Since fleeing Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, Hasina, now 77, has been living in India following her government&rsquo;s collapse due to massive student-led protests.
While Mujibur Rahman is revered as an independence hero, anger toward Hasina&rsquo;s rule has cast a shadow over his legacy. He and most of his family were assassinated in a military coup on August 15, 1975, while Hasina and her sister Rehana were abroad in Germany.

India has reportedly extended the visa of Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who has been residing in India since fleeing violent protests in August 2024. The extension comes amidst growing pressure from Bangladesh's interim government, which has called for her extradition.
Contrary to rumors, Indian officials clarified that Hasina has not been granted asylum. They stressed that India does not have specific asylum laws, and the visa extension is a technical move to allow her continued stay. Hasina is reportedly living under heavy security at a safe house in Delhi.
The request for Hasina's extradition was made on December 23, 2024, by Bangladesh&rsquo;s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Dhaka&rsquo;s authorities have charged her with involvement in violence and disappearances during the 2024 protests.
Earlier this week, the interim government revoked Hasina&rsquo;s passport, along with those of 96 others, accusing them of being involved in the violent uprising in July 2024, which resulted in many deaths and incidents of enforced disappearances. Among the revoked documents, 22 were linked to disappearances, while the remaining 75 were associated with the violence during the protests, including Hasina&rsquo;s.
Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued an arrest warrant for Hasina and 11 other individuals for alleged involvement in these disappearances. The tribunal has set a deadline of February 12, 2025, for the apprehension of the accused.
ICT Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder has underscored the necessity of a thorough investigation. The Inspector General of Police has been tasked with ensuring the arrest and presentation of the accused.
Since the fall of the Awami League government, over 60 complaints have been filed with the ICT, implicating Hasina, her allies, and law enforcement officials in severe crimes like genocide, enforced disappearances, and deaths. The interim government has also submitted a preliminary report suggesting that Hasina, her associates, and possibly officials from India, were involved in these unlawful activities.

Rakhal Raha, a writer and researcher involved in revising the textbooks, explained that the goal was to present a more accurate history, free from what he termed "exaggerated, imposed history."

In a significant change to the nation's educational curriculum, Bangladesh has introduced new textbooks that credit Ziaur Rahman with declaring the country's independence in 1971, replacing the previous version that credited founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The new textbooks, set for the 2025 academic year, feature a series of revisions, including the removal of the title "Father of the Nation" from Mujibur Rahman.
According to a report by The Daily Star, the new textbooks for primary and secondary school students now state that "on March 26, 1971, Ziaur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh, and on March 27, he made another declaration of independence on behalf of Bangabandhu." This change was confirmed by Prof AKM Reazul Hassan, the chairman of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board. The alterations were made in textbooks distributed for free to students, particularly those discussing the declaration of independence.

He added that those responsible for the revision found no factual basis for the claim that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman sent the wireless message declaring independence while he was imprisoned by the Pakistani army. As a result, the statement was removed from the textbooks.
Historically, the Awami League has maintained that Mujibur Rahman made the declaration of independence, while Ziaur Rahman, then an army major, only read it out on Mujib's instructions. In the aftermath of changes to the textbooks, the Bangladeshi government has also started phasing out the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from currency notes and other public symbols. This move gained momentum following the ousting of Mujib's daughter, Sheikh Hasina, as prime minister on August 5. Additionally, statues and murals bearing his likeness have been targeted, and the interim government canceled a national holiday that commemorated his assassination on August 15.

Sanjeeb Wazed, son of deposed Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has accused the Muhammad Yunus led interim government of &ldquo;weaponising the judiciary&rdquo; for carrying out a &ldquo;political witch hunt&rdquo; against the Awami League leadership.
Wazed's allegations, as a long post on X, came two days after the interim government on Monday said it has sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi seeking Hasina's extradition from India.
Hasina, 77, has been living in India since August 5 when she fled Bangladesh following a massive student-led protest that toppled her Awami League's (AL) 16-year regime.
Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civil officials for &ldquo;crimes against humanity and genocide.&rdquo;
&ldquo;The judges and prosecutors appointed by unelected Yunus led regime to conduct farcical trial process through International Crimes Tribunal makes it a political witch hunt that forsakes justice and marks another ongoing onslaught to persecute Awami League leadership,&rdquo; Wazed said in his post on Tuesday.
An IT entrepreneur, Wazed is based in the US and has been an ICT adviser in Hasina's government.
&ldquo;The kangaroo tribunal and subsequent request for extradition comes while hundreds of leaders and activists are extrajudicially killed, framing of outrageous murder charges, illegal incarceration of thousands by law enforcement and violent attacks including looting vandalism and arson going on with impunity everyday fuelled by denial of the regime,&rdquo; he added.
On Monday, India confirmed receiving the 'note verbale' or diplomatic communication from the Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi but refrained from commenting on it.
Under the provisions of the India-Bangladesh extradition treaty, extradition may be refused if the offence is one of a &ldquo;political character.&rdquo;

Wazed further accused that the chief prosecutor of ICT Tribunal Tajul Islam appointed by Yunus regime on December 22, despite proven records of defending war criminals, &ldquo;reportedly spread deliberate disinformation campaign&rdquo; against Hasina by claiming that Interpol issued red notice against her, and termed it as &ldquo;a desperate bid to extradite her and hold farcical trial to serve the interest of Dr Yunus.&rdquo;
&ldquo;But the very prosecutor later altered his statement following media exposure of the outright lie and now officially sent a request to India for the extradition,&rdquo; Hasina's son said.
&ldquo;We reiterate our position that every single incident of human rights violation between July and August needs to be investigated in a free and fair manner but the Yunus led regime weaponised the judiciary, and we express no confidence in the justice system,&rdquo; he alleged.
Last month, in an address to the nation on the completion of 100 days of the interim government, Yunus said Bangladesh will seek Hasina's extradition. &ldquo;We must ensure justice in every killing&hellip; We will also ask India to send back fallen autocrat Sheikh Hasina,&rdquo; he had said then.
Yunus, who assumed office on August 8, claimed that about 1,500 people, including students and workers, were killed while 19,931 others were wounded during the protest against the Hasina government.
India has expressed concern as there have been a spate of attacks on minorities including on the Hindu community in Bangladesh in the last few months.
In recent weeks, Hasina has accused the Yunus-led interim government of perpetrating &ldquo;genocide&rdquo; and failing to protect minorities, especially Hindus, since her ouster.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Dhaka two weeks back during which he conveyed to the Bangladeshi side India's concerns, especially those related to the safety and welfare of minorities.

&ldquo;We have sent a note verbale to the Indian government saying that Bangladesh wants her back here for the judicial process,&rdquo; Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain told reporters at his office.
Earlier in the morning, Home Advisor Jahangir Alam said his office has sent a letter to the foreign ministry to facilitate the ousted premier's extradition from India.
&ldquo;We have sent a letter to the foreign ministry regarding her extradition. The process is currently underway,&rdquo; he told reporters in response to a query.
Alam said an extradition treaty between Dhaka and New Delhi already exists and Hasina could be brought back to Bangladesh under it.

"This is my question to those leaders who are talking about boycotting Indian products. Their wives have some beautiful Indian sarees. Why don't they take those sarees and burn them? Why don't you ask this to BNP leaders whose wives have Indian sarees? I know many BNP leaders who when in power went to India to buy sarees and sell them back here.&nbsp;
The boycott calls are being raised by the opposition leaders who allege Indian interference in Bangladesh's internal affairs. Tens of thousands of opposition supporters rallied in Bangladesh&rsquo;s capital on Saturday to demand the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resign and install a caretaker before next general elections expected to be held in early 2024.
The supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, headed by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, reached the protest venue in Dhaka overnight amid tight security while Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan warned of dire consequences in case of violence from the rally.
Hasina and her ruling Awami League party, which returned to power in 2018 for the third consecutive time, have repeatedly ruled out the opposition's demand, saying a caretaker government goes against the spirit of the country&rsquo;s constitution.
The venue at Golapbagh in Dhaka was filled up by Saturday morning and the crowd spilled out into streets when opposition activists chanted slogans such as &ldquo;Down with Hasina&rdquo; and &ldquo;We want a fair election.&rdquo;

All the previous rallies outside Dhaka drew huge crowds despite challenges including what the party said were politically motivated transport strikes and intimidation by security agencies and the ruling party.
Both police and the ruling party denied such allegations.
The rally in Dhaka was held during heightened tension after police stormed the party headquarters following clashes between police and opposition supporters on Wednesday, leaving at least one dead and 50 injured.
Police arrested more than 400 opposition activists.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday left Dhaka for a four-day state visit to India to meet the country's top leadership to further cement the multifaceted relationship and ink at least seven bilateral agreements in areas like water management, railway and science and technology. 

Issues related to security cooperation, investment, enhanced trade relations, border management, drug smuggling, likely to get priority during talks between Hasina and PM Modi.&nbsp;

A VVIP flight of state-run Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the prime minister and her entourage took off from Dhaka&rsquo;s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Hasina is expected to land at Palam International Airport in New Delhi in the next two hours, aviation officials said.
&ldquo;This is a state visit and she (Hasina) is going to Delhi at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi,&rdquo; Bangladesh foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen had told a media briefing on Sunday.
Momen said issues related to security cooperation, investment, enhanced trade relations, power and energy sector cooperation, water sharing of common rivers, water resources management, border management, and combating drug smuggling and human trafficking are likely to get priority during the talks between Hasina and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Momen, who is also accompanying Hasina to India, said the agreements expected to be inked during the visit would be on water management, railway, science and technology, and information and broadcasting.
&ldquo;After the (signing) ceremony honourable prime ministers of the two countries will issue a joint statement," he said.
The foreign minister said Dhaka expects that the high-level visit would be very successful to &ldquo;help achieve our goals".
This will be Hasina's first visit to India after three years. She visited India in 2019.
Hasina's delegation comprises Foreign Minister Momen, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan, Liberation War Minister A K M Mozammel Haq and Mashiur AKM Rahman, the economic affairs advisor to the Prime Minister.
The visit will further strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the two countries based on strong historical and cultural ties and mutual trust and understanding, said the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.
During her visit, Hasina will also call on President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar apart from holding bilateral consultations with her Indian counterpart.\

Bangladesh's foreign minister was in Assam's Guwahati on May 28 when he was asked about Dhaka's relations with Delhi and Beijing. AK Abdul Momen called India a "historical, rock-solid" partner, and China a "development" partner.
