The SAD had fielded the candidate from the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency for the first time.

The Shiromani Akali Dal's Chandigarh candidate Hardeep Singh has opted out of the electoral contest and quit the party, dealing a blow to the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led outfit.
Singh ascribed his decision to the party's "indifferent" attitude towards Chandigarh.
The SAD had fielded Singh, who is a municipal councillor from Butrela in the Chandigarh municipal corporation.
"It is due to the party's 'berukhi' (indifferent attitude) towards Chandigarh and us," Singh said.
"I was campaigning. I had said to the party president that he should stand by him. But we could not get support from him," he further said.
Along with him, the party's several office bearers also left the party.
The SAD had fielded the candidate from the Chandigarh parliamentary constituency for the first time.
From the Chandigarh parliamentary seat, the BJP has fielded Sanjay Tandon while the Congress candidate is Manish Tewari.&nbsp;

On Sunday, the Simranjit Mann-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) had said it would support Amritpal.

On Sunday, the Simranjit Mann-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) had said it would support Amritpal.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat Virsa Singh Valtoha on Monday met the family of radical preacher Amritpal Singh in Amritsar and sought their support.
Amritpal, the chief of the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit who is lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act, is also in the fray from Khadoor Sahib as an Independent.
In a Facebook post, Valtoha, whose candidature was announced by his party on Sunday, said he met Amritpal's family in the morning.
He discussed the Lok Sabha polls with Singh's family and urged them to support him, according to the post.
On Sunday, the Simranjit Mann-led Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) had said it would support Amritpal.
Mann said his party will withdraw its candidate from the seat after Amritpal files his nomination papers.
Valtoha, who is also the SAD's spokesperson, was elected as MLA in 2007 and 2012. He had unsuccessfully contested from Khem Karan assembly seat in the 2022 state elections.
Besides Valtoha and Amritpal, AAP's Laljit Singh Bhullar and BJP's Manjit Singh Manna Mianwind are in the fray from Khadoor Sahib, which is currently represented by Congress MP Jasbir Singh Dimpa.
The Congress is yet to name its candidate for the seat.

Meanwhile, INLD general secretary Abhay Chautala thanked the Akali Dal for its decision to extend wholehearted support to the INLD in the Lok Sabha polls.&nbsp;

The Shiromani Akali Dal on Monday said it will support Indian National Lok Dal candidates in the Lok Sabha elections in Haryana.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the SAD's Haryana unit which was presided over by the party's state affairs incharge Balwinder Singh Bhunder, a party statement said.
The meeting held at the SAD's head office was attended by the party's Haryana president Sharanjit Singh Sotha and INLD general secretary Abhay Singh Chautala.
Chautala thanked the SAD for its decision to extend wholehearted support to the INLD in the Lok Sabha polls, according to the statement.
Polling for the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will be held in the sixth round of the seven-phase general elections on May 25.
Chautala said the INLD and the SAD are traditional alliance partners and their unity in the forthcoming elections will help his party emerge victorious.
The former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala-led INLD is contesting all the 10 seats in the state. The party has announced candidates on six seats so far.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party was defeated in Punjab's Lok Sabha bypolls. AAP's candidate Gurmail Singh lost by a margin of 7,000 votes by Shiromani Akali Dal's (A) Simranjit Singh Mann on Sunday. 
The seat in contention was Sangrur that was vacated by current Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann after he was elected from Dhuri in this year's state polls. Counting of votes began on Sunday at 8 AM amid heavy security measures and results were declared at 2 PM. 
77-year-old Simranjit Singh Mann is the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar)-unrelated to the Shiromani Akali Dal led by the Badal clan. Meanwhile, AAP's candidate Gurmail Singh is the party's district-in-charge of Sangrur. 
Other candidates fielded for the Sangrur seat include Congress' former Dhuri MLA Dalvir Singh Gody, BJP's Kewal Dhillon and Akali Dal's Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana.
For Aam Aadmi Party winning this seat was a question of prestige and retaining its bastion while for the other parties it meant coming back from the heavy loss in this year's state elections. 
Bhagwant Mann had held Sangrur in the 2014 and 2019 general elections till he vacated it earlier this year in March. Sangrur was one of the three Lok Sabha seats and seven Assembly constituencies where bypolls were necessitated this year.

"I want to assure everyone that the bills have nothing to do with MSPs. MSPs were there and will continue. I would request everyone to reconsider their views on the farm bills. The two bills are historic and will bring a change in the lives of the farmers. The farmers will be able to freely trade their produce anywhere in the country.", said Tomar&nbsp;to members.&nbsp;
The numbers, are in favour of the BJP in the Rajya Sabha, while the Lok Sabha already cleared the bills despite a key NDA member, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), opposing them.&nbsp;BJP leaders are confident that they will get the support of over 130 members, including 9 of the AIADMK and 6 MPs of the YSR Congress, both of whom are not part of the NDA, if a division of votes is sought on these bills. The Shiv Sena, a former BJP ally and now in opposition, has also expressed its support.

Hailing the passage of three farm sector bills in Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described these proposed legislations as historic and asserted that they will rid farmers and the farm sector of middlemen and other bottlenecks.
With ruling BJP ally Shiromani Akali Dal joining the opposition in protesting these bills, PM&nbsp;Modi asserted that many forces are trying to "mislead' farmers and assured the farming community that minimum support price (MSP) and government procurement of their produce will continue along with a lot of other options for them.
These reforms will provide new opportunities to farmers to sell their produce and will lead to increased profits for them, he said.
Modi also urged farmers and those associated with the agriculture sector to listen to Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar's reply to the discussion on these bills.
Many forces are trying to mislead farmers, he added, while assuring them of the benefits of these reforms. "The people who ruled this country for decades are attempting to mislead the farmers on this issue. They are lying to the farmers," the PM said.
Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill.
It has already passed Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill.
The three bills will now be tabled in Rajya Sabha and become laws after the Upper House also passes them.
They will replace ordinances promulgated by the Union government.
The two bills were passed by voice vote in Lok Sabha earlier in the evening amid protests by opposition parties with SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal also vehemently opposing them, calling these measures as anti-farmers.
The SAD's lone member in the Union Cabinet Harsimrat Kaur Badal quit the government, accusing it of not taking farmers on board.

Punjab CM: No cases against farmers protesting agri bills

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Wednesday appealed to farmers not to stop traffic or violate Section 144 in the state over the agriculture bills introduced by the government in the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament. However, he made it clear that no cases would be registered against the protesting farmers as they were fighting for their lives. After submitting a memorandum against the anti-farmer Bills on behalf of the Punjab Congress to the Governor, he said that the FIRs already registered against farmers would be withdrawn. He added that the Centre's legislations would ruin Punjab&rsquo;s agriculture, which was the backbone of its economy. Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Badal has said they would vote against the three agriculture bills listed for Wednesday in the parliament.
