World's taller Lord Shiva statue to be inaugurated in Rajasthan: all you need to know

The 369-foot-tall Shiva statue 'Viswas Swaroopam' installed in Nathdwara town of Rajasthan's Rajsamand district will be inaugurated on Saturday.
Claimed to be the tallest Shiva statue in the world, it will be opened to the public scriptures preacher Morari Bapu in the presence of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, assembly speaker CP Joshi, and others.
The statue, which is situated 45 kms from Udaipur, has been constructed by Tat Padam Sansthan.
The Sansthan trustee and Miraj group chairman Madan Paliwal said that a series of religious, spiritual, and cultural events will be held for nine days &ndash; from October 29 to November 6 &ndash; after the inauguration of the statue.
Religion preacher Morari Bapu will also recite Ram Katha during the nine days.
&ldquo;This wonderful statue of Lord Shiva installed in the city of Shreenathji will give a new dimension to religious tourism,&rdquo; Paliwal said.
Installed on a hilltop over an expanse of 51 bighas, the statue is styled in a posture of meditation, and is said to be visible from 20 kilometers away.
The statue is also clearly visible at night as it has been illuminated with special lights, Jaiprakash Mali, spokesperson for the programme said.
&ldquo;This is the world's tallest Shiva idol in which lifts, stairs, and a hall for devotees have been built. There are four lifts and three stairs to go inside,&rdquo; he said.
Three thousand tonnes of steel and iron, 2.5 lakh cubic tonnes of concrete and sand have been used in its construction, which took 10 years to complete.
The foundation of the project was laid in August 2012 in the presence of Ashok Gehlot, who was the CM even then, and Morari Bapu.
Mali said that the statue has been constructed to last 250 years and can withstand wind speed up to 250 kmph.
&ldquo;Wind tunnel test of the design of this statue has been done in Australia,&rdquo; he added.
The venue around the statue will host activities like bungee jumping, zip line, and Go-Kart, and will house a food court, adventure park, and a jungle cafe for the tourists to enjoy their day, he added.

Indian History of Transgenders

The modern world is still taking baby steps towards righting the wrongs inflicted on transgender folks.
 On the other hand, transgenders in ancient India seemed to have a non-marginalised position. Ancient Indian texts of around 1500 BC used &ldquo;tritiya-prakriti&rdquo; (third nature) for people not belonging to traditionally male or female roles or a mixture of both. While transgender as category wasn&rsquo;t promoted, they were adjusted in social life without much discrimination. Indian linguist Patanjali claimed around 200 BC that 3 grammatical genders in Sanskrit language are derived from three natural genders. In Indian mythology, &lsquo;Ardhanarishvara&rsquo; has been worshipped since ancient times. It is the composite avatar (form) of Shiva and Parvati. Another such example is the son of Arjun, Aravan from Mahabharata. According to certain legends, Aravan was unmarried at the time of the great battle. He promised to sacrifice himself for the victory in war on the condition of experiencing marriage at least once. Consequently, Sri Krishna took the form of a woman Mohini and married him. In Tamil Nadu, Hijra people call themselves &lsquo;Aravanis&rsquo; or devotees of Aravan.&nbsp; Human Rights Watch uses the term Hijra &ldquo;for people assigned male at birth who develop a feminine gender identity&rdquo;
In Tritiya-Prakriti: People of the Third Sex, writer Amara Das Wilhelm claimed that "early Vedic teachings stressed responsible family life and asceticism but also tolerated different types of sexualities and transgenders within general society"
During Mughal reign, eunuchs were known as Khawaja Sira. Discrimination was minimal and several eunuchs were appointed in important positions of armed forces as well as court advisors. All that changed with the arrival of the British
British rulers of India associated transgender people with &ldquo;filth, disease, contagion and contamination&rdquo; They introduced Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code in 1864, which criminalized &ldquo;carnal intercourse against the order of nature&rdquo;&nbsp; While the section was brought to penalize homosexuality, it was also used to target Transgender and any groups the British considered &ldquo;deviant&rdquo;
In 1871, Britishers implemented the Criminal Tribes Act that considered people of certain groups to have inborn criminal tendencies. They included Transgender people in it. Britishers even imprisoned eunuchs for wearing ornaments traditionally associated with females. Many analysts claim that stigma and hatred of Transgender people developed in India during British rule.
