Singapore is a key member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a 10-nation bloc known as ASEAN. Its three-day summit was expected to focus on member Myanmar's humanitarian crisis and conflicts in the South China Sea.
Instead, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was grilled on the summit's sidelines about an exclusive deal his city-state struck with Swift that prevents the singer from taking her Eras Tour to any other stop in Southeast Asia.
Swift is performing six concerts from March 2 to 9 in Singapore, and some Southeast Asian neighbours complain that the Singapore deal deprives them of the tourism boom her concerts bring to hosts. Her Eras Tour shattered records when it reportedly surpassed $1 billion last year, and her film adaptation of the tour quickly took No. 1 at the box office and became the highest-grossing concert film to date.
The Singaporean leader confirmed Tuesday that Swift was provided with &ldquo;certain incentives&rdquo; in exchange for making Singapore her only Southeast Asian destination on her Eras Tour.
Lee defended the deal at a joint news conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, a self-professed Swiftie whose Spotify Wrapped list boasted Taylor Swift as his second most streamed artist of 2023. Albanese is hosting the summit in Melbourne, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Australia becoming ASEAN's first external partner.
Lee did not reveal the cost of the exclusive deal, which was paid for from a government fund established to rebuild tourism after COVID-19 disruptions. He also did not directly answer when asked if he had encountered &ldquo;bad blood&rdquo; among other leaders due to the deal, instead suggesting that if Singapore hadn't struck an exclusive deal, a neighbouring country might have done so.
&ldquo;It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don't see that as being unfriendly," Lee said.
Thailand's Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, brought attention to the deal in February with a public claim that a promoter told him the Singaporean government subsidised the concert with a condition that the artist not play anywhere else in Southeast Asia.
Srettha said that if he had known about the deal before, he was confident he would be able to pull off something similar.
But Thailand doesn't hold it against Singapore, said Prommin Lertsuridej, the Secretary-General of the Prime Minister. He told reporters in a group interview Monday that Thailand took what Singapore did as an example, and while Thailand already has some laws in place to allow such incentive packages, the government is working to remove red tape and make Thailand a more attractive venue for international events.
&ldquo;We learn from each other,&rdquo; Prommin said, adding that he admired Singapore for being able to come up with and achieve this &ldquo;good business idea.&rdquo; Lee said that, while he didn't know what Australia's arrangements were, he expected it similarly made &ldquo;mutually acceptable, sensible arrangements&rdquo; with Swift when she performed in Melbourne and Sydney - one of which Australia's prime minister attended - before flying to Singapore.
Swift's representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Other questions at the news conference covered increasing tensions in the South China Sea, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the likelihood of China joining in a regional free trade pact.&nbsp;

A 64-year-old Indian woman on board a cruise ship has gone missing as the ship sailed through the Strait of Singapore from Penang, the northern island state of Peninsular Malaysia.
The incident was reported on Monday with Reeta Sahani and her husband Jakesh Sahani on their way back to Singapore from Penang aboard the Spectrum of the Seas. Monday was also the last day of the couple&rsquo;s four-day cruise, reports said.
Jakesh, 70, woke up to find his wife missing from their room, according to a report by The Straits Times on Tuesday.
The retiree tried to locate his wife on the sprawling cruise ship but in vain. He later informed the ship&rsquo;s crew, who told him the ship&rsquo;s overboard detection systems had been alerted that something had fallen from the vessel into the Singapore Strait.
It is a 113-km long and 19-km wide busy shipping route between the Strait of Malacca and the South China Sea with Singapore on the north of the channel.
Jakesh&rsquo;s son, Apoorv Sahani, who was not on the cruise, said his family members are still in the dark about his mother&rsquo;s current status.
The 39-year-old architect said his mother could not swim, and that his father was made to go through an interview with the police that lasted a few hours.
&ldquo;We have asked to see the CCTV footage, but, so far, we have not received anything yet for us to confirm that it was her. All we know is that the ship&rsquo;s crew thinks she jumped into the water,&rdquo; the broadsheet quoted Apoorv as saying.
&ldquo;Eventually my father was told to get down from the ship because there was another cruise that was going to take place, but we think she may still be on the ship, stuck somewhere,&rdquo; he said.
Apoorv added, &ldquo;She was on a holiday enjoying herself and then this whole thing happened. It does not make sense.&rdquo; Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement on Monday that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Singapore was notified about the incident at about 7.50 am.
The passenger was on board the Cyprus-flagged Spectrum of the Seas, and had fallen overboard, although no further details were provided, it said.
&ldquo;MRCC Singapore is coordinating the search and immediately issued navigational safety broadcast to vessels in the Singapore Strait and vessels in port to keep a lookout for the missing person and report any sightings to MRCC Singapore,&rdquo; said the statement.
It added that the vessel was berthed earlier in Singapore to support the investigations and had departed at around 4.30 pm.
Checks on the marine tracking website Marine Traffic showed that it is currently bound for Nha Trang in Vietnam.
A spokesman for Royal Caribbean, which operates the vessel, said the incident was reported to local authorities immediately.
The company declined to comment further, citing the privacy of the guest and their family, but said its team is offering support and assistance to them.
According to the cruise tracking website CruiseMapper, Spectrum of the Seas is the first Royal Caribbean cruise ship belonging to the Quantum-Ultra class &ndash; a larger and upgraded version of the Quantum-class.
It has 2,137 staterooms and can cater to 4,819 passengers, with 16 decks, 18 dining options, four swimming pools and 10 outdoor jacuzzis.&nbsp;

Deputy Public Prosecutor said that Sowrirajulu was working for Infinite Logistics and Trading at the time of the accident in May 2022, it said Sowrirajulu pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing grievous injury while driving without due care or reasonable consideration, the report said.
His blood ethanol concentration was found to be about three times that of the legal limit.

Asian beauties at the Miss Universe pageant used the platform to put out strong statements urging the world to listen as they raised their voices on issues concerning the continent and its people.
Miss Singapore Bernadette Belle Wu Ong, who is competing for the title of Miss Universe wore a red and white cape with the words &ldquo;Stop Asian hate&rdquo; painted on it. Posting the look to Instagram, the contestant wrote &lsquo;What is this platform for if I can&rsquo;t use it to send a strong message of resistance against prejudice and violence!&rsquo;
Similarly, Myanmar's Miss Universe contestant, Thuzar Wint Lwin, used the pageant to urge the world to speak out against the military junta that seized power in a Feb. 1 coup.&nbsp; As she paraded with her national costume, she held up a placard that said "Pray for Myanmar". "Our people are dying and being shot by the military every day," she said in a video message for the competition.

Amazon had purchased 49% in one of Future's unlisted firms last year with the right to buy into Future Retail Ltd after a period of three years to 10 years. It believes Future Group violated the contract by entering into the deal with rival Reliance.
