<h3>Merger Completion Likely By 2024-End</h3>
The Air India-Vistara merger plan was announced in November 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Once completed, the merger will create one of the world&rsquo;s largest airlines and will result in Singapore Airlines acquiring a 25.1 per cent stake in Air India.
Currently, Tata Group owns Air India, while Tata and Singapore Airlines have a 51:49 joint venture called Tata SIA Airlines Limited, which operates Vistara.
<h3>Singapore Airlines&rsquo; Regulatory Filing</h3>
"The FDI approval, together with anti-trust and merger control clearances and approvals, as well as other governmental and regulatory approvals received to date, represent a significant development towards the completion of the proposed merger," Singapore Airlines said in a filing to the Singapore Stock Exchange on Friday.
In the regulatory filing, Singapore Airlines added that the completion of the merger continues to be subject to compliance with applicable Indian laws. It added that, at this juncture, the proposed merger is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2024.
<h3>Air India-Vistara Merger: Other Approvals</h3>
With the Indian government&rsquo;s FDI approval for Singapore Airlines, the proposed merger has cleared most regulatory hurdles. In June 2024, the proposal was approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) in India.
In March 2024, Singapore's competition regulator, CCCS, had given its conditional approval for the proposed merger. Prior to that, in September 2023, India&rsquo;s competition watchdog, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), had given its nod to the proposed deal.
<h3>Tata-Singapore Airlines Partnership</h3>
Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines started working together in 2013 when they set up the aviation joint venture Tata SIA Airlines Limited. The JV started the airline Vistara, which commenced operations on 9 January 2015.
<h3>Tatas-SIA: A Long Association</h3>
Tata and Singapore Airlines had been trying to work together in the Indian aviation space for a long time. The two groups had tried to set up a full-service carrier together in India in the 1990s as well. However, they failed in that bid due to the regulatory framework of those times.
In 2012, the Indian government opened the domestic aviation sector for 49% foreign direct investment (FDI). Following this liberalisation of the FDI policy, Tata and SIA joined hands to set up a premium, full-service carrier in India.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) said Tuesday it had offered $10,000 in compensation to passengers who suffered minor injuries on a flight hit by extreme turbulence last month and will discuss higher payouts with those more badly hurt.
A 73-year-old British man died and several other passengers and crew onboard flight SQ321 from London suffered skull, brain and spine injuries during the terrifying high-altitude ordeal.
The pilots diverted the Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew to Bangkok, where the injured were taken to hospitals.

In a statement on Tuesday, SIA said it had sent out emails offering US$10,000 in compensation to passengers who sustained minor injuries during the incident.
"For those who sustained more serious injuries... we have invited them to discuss a compensation offer to meet each of their specific circumstances when they feel well and ready to do so," the airline said.
"Passengers medically assessed as having sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of US$25,000 to address their immediate needs.
"This will be part of the final compensation that these passengers will receive."
In addition, the carrier said it would refund the airfares of all passengers on the flight, including those who were not injured.

A sudden 54-metre altitude drop caused unbelted passengers on a Singapore Airlines flight hit by deadly turbulence to be thrown violently inside the cabin, causing injuries, the transport ministry said Wednesday.&nbsp;
One person died and several other passengers and crew onboard flight SQ321 from London suffered skull, brain and spine injuries during last week's terrifying high-altitude ordeal.&nbsp;
The pilots diverted the Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew to Bangkok, where the injured were taken to hospitals.&nbsp;
The transport ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the aircraft experienced a "rapid change" in gravitational force, or G-force, while the plane was passing over the south of Myanmar, citing a preliminary report by Singapore's Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB).&nbsp;
The ministry said that "vertical acceleration" decreased from positive 1.35G to negative 1.5G within 0.6 seconds, likely resulting "in the occupants who were not belted up to become airborne".&nbsp;
Vertical acceleration again changed from negative 1.5G to positive 1.5G within 4.0 seconds and "this likely resulted in the occupants who were airborne to fall back down", it added.&nbsp;
"The rapid changes in G over the 4.6 sec duration resulted in an altitude drop of 178 ft, from 37,362 ft to 37,184 ft," according to the statement.&nbsp;
"This sequence of events likely caused the injuries to the crew and passengers."&nbsp;
The transport ministry said the early report was based on data taken from the plane's flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder.&nbsp;
The investigation team included experts from the TSIB, the US National Transportation Safety Board, the US Federal Aviation Administration and the plane's manufacturer Boeing.&nbsp;
The plane initially experienced slight vibration which resulted in an "uncommanded increase in aircraft altitude" from 37,000 feet to 37,362 feet before the autopilot pitched the plane downward to its original altitude.&nbsp;
The pilots also observed an "uncommanded increase in airspeed" which they slowed.&nbsp;
While managing the speed, a pilot was heard calling out that the fasten-seat-belt sign had been turned on, according to the ministry.&nbsp; The "uncommanded" increases in altitude and airspeed were most likely caused by an "updraft", or the upward movement of air, it said.&nbsp;
The ministry statement did not mention the plane plunging 1,800 metres (6,000 feet) in just a few minutes which was shown on flight tracking data.&nbsp;
Singapore Airlines said in a statement on Wednesday that 42 passengers from the flight were still in Bangkok, including 26 in hospital.&nbsp;
The airline also said it was cooperating in the investigation.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Geoffrey Kitchen, a 73-year-old British passenger, died likely due to a heart attack on the flight, said Kittipong Kittikachorn, general manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, to where the SIA flight was on Tuesday diverted under emergency.
As many as 30 passengers have been receiving treatment for their injuries in hospitals in Bangkok after the Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight SQ321, operating from London (Heathrow) to Singapore on May 20 encountered "sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin at 37,000 feet about 10 hours after departure".
The nationalities of the passengers are as follows: 56 from Australia, three Indians, two from Canada, one from Germany, two Indonesians, one from Iceland, four from Ireland, one from Israel, 16 from Malaysia, two from Myanmar, 23 from New Zealand, five from the Philippines, 41 Singaporeans, one South Korean, two from Spain, 47 from the United Kingdom, and four from the US.

Emergency crews from Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, about 20 km (12 miles) away from Suvarnabhumi Airport, were on site to transfer injured passengers from Flight SQ321 from Heathrow off the runway for treatment. Videos posted on the LINE messaging platform by Suvarnabhumi Airport showed a line of ambulances streaming to the scene.
&ldquo;Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,&rdquo; the airline said. &ldquo;We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance, and sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed." Tracking data captured by FlightRadar24 and analysed by The Associated Press showed the Singapore Airlines flight cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet. Just after 0800 GMT, the Boeing 777 suddenly and sharply pitched down to 31,000 feet over the span of some three minutes, the data shows.
The aircraft stayed at 31,000 feet for just under 10 minutes before rapidly descending and landing in Bangkok in just under half an hour.&nbsp;

Singapore Airlines, which has recently been named as the World&rsquo;s best airline is now giving 88% salary hike to its CEO.&nbsp; According to the airline&rsquo;s annual report released on Wednesday (28 Jun), SIA CEO, Mr Goh Choon Phong, saw his annual salary rise by 88% to S$6.73 million (US$4.98 million) from S$3.59 million the previous year.
According to Bloomberg, the company is paying staff a bonus of around eight months&rsquo; salary after posting a record annual profit.
The remuneration for Goh, who has been CEO since 2011, includes a base pay of S$1.14 million, bonuses of S$2.96 million, and shares and benefits amounting to S$2.63 million.
Propelled by a robust recovery in travel demand, SIA reported a net profit of S$2.16 billion for the year ended Mar 31, rebounding from a loss of S$962 million a year earlier.

This is the first time that Singapore Airlines (SIA), which holds 49 per cent stake in Vistara, has officially acknowledged that it is in talks with Tata group on the possibility of merging the two airlines&nbsp;

Hinting at a potential integration of commercial airlines Vistara and Air India, Singapore Airlines has confirmed that it is holding discussions with Tata Sons for the merger.
Singapore Airlines in a statement said that discussions with Tatas are ongoing and no definitive terms have been agreed upon between the parties.&nbsp;
According to reports, Tatas has a 51 per cent stake in Vistara and the rest is with Singapore Airlines (SIA). Tatas are also the owner of Air India and can invite another airline to buy a stake in the former national carrier, provided they hold a majority 51 per cent share.
The merger, which could take a year to complete, is part of a bigger consolidation drive by Tata Sons to save costs, create synergies by optimising aircraft utilisation and routes and increase market share to compete with IndiGo, India&rsquo;s largest airline with a market share of 59 per cent.

These additional protocols include a mandatory on-arrival RT-PCR test and seven days of home quarantine, with a follow-up RT-PCR test on day eight.
Passengers arriving from &ldquo;at no risk&rdquo; countries can enjoy quarantine-free travel within India and will need to self-monitor their health for 14 days. Also, a random sample of 2 per cent of passengers travelling from Singapore will need to undergo RT-PCR testing on arrival at Indian airports.
