Former India captain and Delhi Capitals director of cricket Sourav Ganguly is in favour of continuing with the impact-player rule in IPL, but wants teams to decide their picks at the toss.
The impact-player rule has become a hot topic of debate following the recently-concluded edition of IPL where scores in excess of 250 runs were notched up eight times.
Ganguly added he wants the boundaries to be pushed further back in upcoming IPL editions.
"I like the impact player rule. My only thing with IPL is that I just want the grounds to be a bit bigger. The fences should go a little behind," Ganguly told the media on the sidelines of the International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference organised by the Blue Ocean Corporation.
"It is a great tournament. The only thing you can do with the impact player is decide before the toss, so it's a bit of skill there.
"So, have the impact player revealed before because that will require a lot of skill and game plan. But, I am all for the impact player," the former India skipper said.
Ganguly defended Prithvi Shaw, who had a below-par IPL season this year, saying he is still young and learning the tricks of the shortest format.
"He (Prithvi Shaw) is a young kid. He is just 23. He is still learning how to play T20 cricket. He is a very fine talent and he will get better. Sometimes, we expect too much too early from everyone and I am sure Prithvi, with the skills he has, he will do well," he added.
Ganguly said wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had started playing like the cricketer he was before the car crash in 2022.
"He was superb for us (DC) in the IPL. I was so happy to see the way he came back, because I have always said that he is a special player," Ganguly said.
"Even earlier, I have said that he is exceptional. You don't want such talent to be lost for such disastrous reasons (accident). He has really worked hard to get back to where he is and he is the Rishabh Pant of old." Ganguly also hoped that the Bengal selectors will pick India wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha as he looks to return to his home state from Tripura.
"He wants to play for Bengal and rightfully so. He is a Bengal boy," Ganguly said.
"He went away to Tripura for two years because he was playing there as a professional. He has finished that and he wants to be in Bengal. I am sure the selectors will pick him for Bengal.
"I am not involved in Bengal cricket at the moment. I didn't fight for the presidency when I finished (my) BCCI (stint). I have just taken a break. Whatever the selectors and the officials decide, they will do," he added.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Saturday said Gautam Gambhir would be a "good coach" for the national cricket team if he has applied for the job as his "hunger and passion" was evident in the recently-concluded IPL.
Speaking at the inauguration of the International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference organised by the Blue Ocean Corporation, Ganguly also gave his views on India's chances in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
The former BCCI President said he is in favour of the national team having an Indian coach since there is enough talent in the country.
"I am in favour of an Indian coach because we have enormous talent in our country, enormously high-skilled players who have done wonders for Indian cricket and very rightfully they should be a part of the system," Ganguly said.
On whether the widely perceived front-runner Gambhir would be suitable for the position, Ganguly had a query of his own at first.
"...has he applied? I really don't know because first he has to apply and then only he will get the job...I think (May) 27th was the last date of application," Ganguly said.
"Obviously, BCCI has the right to extend it (the deadline) as well. If he applies and if he wants it, and I say if he applies and if he wants it, he will be a very good candidate," he said.
The 51-year-old said Gambhir's winning attitude as IPL champion Kolkata Knight Riders' mentor was there for all to see this year.
"If Gambhir applies &mdash; you can see it on TV &mdash; he worked for KKR this year. I was with Delhi (Capitals), you can see the hunger, the passion and the want to win and I will be happy if he applies and if the board decides to give him the job, I think he is a good candidate," Ganguly said.
India's head coach position will fall vacant after Rahul Dravid steps down at the end of the team's T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas.
A few days ago, BCCI secretary Jay Shah also hinted that an Indian coach would be preferred.
"We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks," Shah had said.

Fans and many cricket experts are having trouble coming to terms with Rinku Singh not being a part of India's T20 World Cup squad and Sourav Ganguly had his say about the exclusion.

Rinku Singh shouldn't be disheartened by his exclusion from India's T20 World Cup squad as it was pure tactical decision by team management to ask for an extra spinner taking pitches in the Caribbean into account, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said on Friday.
Ganguly feels the 26-year-old, who boasts of a 176-plus strike rate in 15 T20Is and plays the role of a finisher for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, may have missed out as India wanted to go with an "extra spinner" keeping in mind the spinning tracks in the West Indies.
"It's West Indies. The wickets may be slow and assist spin so they (selectors) wanted to go with another spinner. Maybe because of that Rinku didn't get an opportunity but it's just the beginning for Rinku," Ganguly said at the Trophy unveiling ceremony of the Bengal Pro T20 League.
India play their group stage matches in the USA, opening their campaign against Ireland on June 5. Super Eight onwards the tournament will be held in the Caribbean countries.
Ganguly expected India and Australia to dominate the tournament as they did in the 50-over World Cup last year.
"India and Australia the two best teams of the tournament. I'm sure they will do the same thing in the USA and the West Indies," Ganguly said.
On the Indian squad, Ganguly said: "It's a fabulous squad, they are all match winners. All 15 are good enough to be selected, I'm sure Rohit (Sharma) and Rahul (Dravid) will pick the best."
Meanwhile all the eight franchises and their marquee players in the Bengal Pro T20 League were also announced. The inaugural edition of the league will take place at Eden Gardens and Jadavpur University Salt Lake Campus ground from June 11-28.

A global title may be eluding India for a decade now, but former captain Sourav Ganguly said on Thursday that there is no need to press panic button while placing the onus on batters to win the World Cup at home. India have not won an ICC event after the MS Dhoni-led side triumphed in the Champions Trophy beating England in 2013. Since then, India have featured in eight knockout matches, including semifinals and finals, in the ICC tournaments but failed to win a title.
"You cannot win World Cups all the time, there will be bad times, there will be gaps," Ganguly said during the launch of Cycle Pure Agarbathi's new products to mark its 75 years.
India have lost two successive World Test Championships Finals in 2021 and 2023, while they exited in semifinals of the ODI World Cup in 2015 and 2019, besides losing the Champions Trophy final in 2017.
It's the same story in T20 World Cups. They lost the final in 2014 and were bundled out in the semifinals twice -- 2016 and 2022.
However, India will be taking a shot at Cup glory during this World Cup at home, and Ganguly said their batsmen must deliver.
"They will have to bat very well, if they bat well they will win," Ganguly, who led India to the 2003 World Cup final, said.
India's preparation will begin with the Asia Cup 2023 where they will face Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan before playing a three-match series against Australia at home.
Ganguly, however, said each tournament would carry its own dynamics.
"The World Cup is different, Asia Cup is different and the Australia home series is different. Every tournament depends on how they play that particular moment. India are a strong side; but they have to play well during the World Cup," he said.
India have picked a 17-member squad for the Asia Cup and the selectors decision to omit premier leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has raised many eyebrows.
"They have picked Axar Patel ahead of Chahal because of his batting. So I think it's a good selection. Chahal can still come back if someone gets injured. This is a 17-member squad, two, in any case, will have to move out," said Ganguly.
Key batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer too made returns from injuries. Rahul, however, is still carrying a niggle.
"He's fit, not injured anymore," he said.
Commenting on the absence of a left-arm pacer in the squad, Ganguly defended the selection, saying, "They picked (players) on form, they picked their best fast bowling side. It's the best pace attack.
"I think it's a very fair side, the right side they have picked. It's just that they have to play well now." Pakistan will start the Asia Cup ahead of India as the No 2 ranked team, and they may even have a chance to become No 1 in ODIs if they beat Afghanistan 3-0 in the on-going series.
"Rankings don't matter, who plays well on that day matters," said Ganguly, but gave a reminder that the Babar Azam-led side will be a formidable opposition.
"They are a very good side. They have a very good bowling attack -- Naseem Shah, Shahid Afridi, Haris Rauf. They are a very balanced team. India is a strong side. It's how you play on that particular day; there is no rocket science to it," he said.
Looking forward to the riveting World Cup clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in Ahmedabad, Ganguly said, "Both teams are formidable, and the one who executes (plans) better will win the match." Ganguly then offered his perspective on head coach Rahul Dravid who was appointed to the helm when the former was the BCCI president.
"He's too big a player to be rated. I wish him all the best for the World Cup," he signed off.

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly expressed his bewilderment at Ajinkya Rahane being appointed as the Test vice-captain despite spending nearly 18 months on the sidelines. Ganguly emphasized the need for consistency and continuity in the selection process.
Ajinkya Rahane, 35, had fallen out of favor for an extended period but showcased his batting prowess in the World Test Championship final against Australia, delivering impressive scores of 89 and 46 at the Oval earlier in June.
Shortly after his comeback and with just one Test under his belt, the national selection committee, led by interim chief Shiv Sunder Das, reinstated Rahane as the deputy to Rohit Sharma for the West Indies Test series.
Ganguly, in an exclusive interaction with PTI from London, expressed his view on grooming someone like Shubman Gill for the role. He stated, "Yeah, I think so."
Ganguly questioned the selectors' decision, stating, "I won't say it's a step backward. You have been out for 18 months, then you play a Test and you become a vice-captain. I don't understand the thought process behind it. There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches, he is a candidate. But to just come back and straightway become vice-captain after 18 months, I don't understand. My only thing is that the selection shouldn't be hot and cold. There has to be continuity and consistency in selection."
Ganguly, one of India's finest Test captains, also highlighted the importance of clear communication with players, particularly in the case of Cheteshwar Pujara, a seasoned Test player who was excluded from the team during the transition phase.
He emphasized the need for selectors to have a clear plan for players like Pujara, communicating whether they still consider him for Test cricket or intend to focus on nurturing young talents. Ganguly stressed that players like Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane shouldn't be subjected to being dropped and picked inconsistently.
"Selectors should have a clear idea about him (Pujara). Do they need him to play Test cricket anymore or do they want to continue with youngsters and communicate it to him. Somebody like Pujara can't be dropped, then picked, dropped again and then picked. Same with Ajinkya Rahane also," remarked Ganguly.

In an announcement that will surely end speculations, Parth Jindal, co-owner of the Delhi Capitals, revealed that the franchise has already initiated preparations for the upcoming Indian Premier League season alongside Sourav Ganguly &amp; Ricky Ponting.&nbsp;
Taking to Twitter, Jindal wrote, "Preparations for next year's @IPL are underway here @DelhiCapitals. Alongside @SGanguly99 and @RickyPonting, we assure the fans that Kiran and I are working hard to get back to where we want this franchise to be, and that is right at the very top."
Jindal's tweet means Ganguly and Ponting will continue their association with the franchise, dispelling earlier speculations of their potential departure due to Delhi's underwhelming performance in the recent IPL season.
The Capitals' lacklustre form in IPL 2023 came as a surprise to many, considering the abundance of resources at their disposal, including a star-studded management team led by Ponting as the head coach and Ganguly as the director of cricket.
During this season's IPL campaign, the Delhi Capitals faced a series of setbacks, starting with five consecutive losses. Although they briefly regained form during the mid-season, they eventually returned to their struggles, ultimately finishing in 9th place with only 10 points from 14 matches.
Adding to their woes, regular captain Rishabh Pant was absent for an indefinite period due to a severe injury suffered in December of the previous year. Coupled with the inconsistent form of batters like Prithvi Shaw and David Warner, the season turned out to be one to forget for the Delhi-based team.
However, with the franchise's management already preparing for the future and the collective expertise of Ganguly and Ponting, the Delhi Capitals aim to bounce back stronger in the upcoming IPL season.&nbsp;

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he was surprised like everyone else when he heard about Virat Kohli's decision to step down as the Test captain of the Indian cricket team after their tour of South Africa in early 2022. Ganguly, in an interaction with Aaj Tak, also confirmed that Kohli was not asked to relinquish his role as the T20 captain ahead of the 2021 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.
The former Indian captain stated the Kohli's decision to quit Test captaincy came as a surprise. He further added that only Kohli can explain why he took that decision. &ldquo;No (on whether BCCI was prepared on Kohli giving up Test captaincy). Not after the South Africa series. I don&rsquo;t know (why he did so), only he can tell,&rdquo; Ganguly said.
In early 2022, following India's series loss in South Africa, Kohli took to social media to announce his decision to step down as Test captain.
When asked if Kohli could have led the team better in a game where India seemed to be on the back foot from day one, Ganguly replied, &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no point in saying that right now. Because the captain had left his role by himself. There&rsquo;s no point in talking about this now. The selectors had to appoint a captain.&rdquo;
Ganguly also praised Rohit Sharma's captaincy, highlighting his successes in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ganguly said he has faith in Rohit, stating, "I believe Rohit was the best option then and even now. Only he and MS Dhoni have won the IPL five times, no one else."
Regarding the difficulty of winning the IPL, Ganguly mentioned that it is far more challenging to win the IPL than win the World Cup. He explained that winning the IPL requires playing 14 matches in the league stage itself, and almost 16-17 matches if you go the distance, whereas, in the World Cup, teams can qualify for the semifinals after 4-5 matches.
Looking ahead to the upcoming ODI World Cup, Ganguly believes that Rohit Sharma and the team are strong contenders for the title, particularly since the tournament will be held in India. Ganguly expressed his desire for Rohit to lead the team without fear and shared his confidence in both Rohit and Rahul Dravid to guide the team forward. He advised the team to play fearlessly and perform their best in the tournament.

According to sources, filmmakers Ankur Garg and Luv Ranjan met Sourav Ganguly at his Kolkata home on May 26 and discussed various aspects of his life that will be important for the upcoming biopic.
Sources further say that the script for the movie has already been written and includes many previously unknown stories about 'dada's' life.
Many prominent stars have been speculated to play the role of Sourav Ganguly including actor Ranbir Kapoor.
Sourav Ganguly's biopic is being made on a big budget and it will have only a theatrical release.

While no specific reason behind the beef-up has come to the fore, a senior official informed that a review was done as per the protocol and the decision was taken to raise Ganguly's security cordon to Z category.&nbsp; Earlier, the 50-year-old had been given a Z category almost 2 decades ago when the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba had threatened to kidnap him.&nbsp; Ganguly who is currently with his IPL team Delhi Capitals will be accorded the Z category security from May 21st when he returns to Kolkata.&nbsp; As per the new arrangement, the legendary cricketer will have 8-10 policemen guarding him.&nbsp;
