Initial Mission Plans and Setbacks
Williams and Wilmore launched aboard Boeing's Starliner on June 5, 2024, as part of its first crewed flight under NASA's Commercial Crew Program. The mission, initially intended to last just one week, aimed to evaluate the Starliner's performance in launch, docking, and landing phases. However, technical issues with the spacecraft forced an early return of the capsule to Earth&mdash;without the astronauts onboard&mdash;leading to significant delays in their planned journey back. 
Challenges with Return Timelines
Originally expected to return in February 2025, their return has now been postponed to late March or early April 2025. The delay arises from additional time required by SpaceX to prepare a new Crew Dragon capsule to accommodate the astronauts. NASA explored alternate options, including using a different SpaceX capsule, but ultimately decided to extend their stay until the new capsule is ready for launch.

SpaceX Steps in to Provide a Solution
After deeming Boeing&rsquo;s Starliner unsuitable for the astronauts' return due to persistent malfunctions and safety concerns, NASA partnered with SpaceX to adjust its Crew-9 mission. SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule will now bring Williams and Wilmore back to Earth, underscoring its pivotal role in NASA's current operations.

Significance of Starliner&rsquo;s Mission Despite the setbacks, the Starliner mission marked a critical milestone as Boeing's first crewed flight. The largest ever X-ray map of the universe has been revealed by scientists in which more than 9,00,000 high-energy cosmic sources and over 7,00,000 supermassive black holes have been found.
On January 31, the German "eROSITA" consortium published the data collected by the eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Russian-German satellite Spektrum-RG.&nbsp;
The Max Planck Society in Germany, which helped manage the mission, said in a statement that the first eROSITA All-Sky Survey Catalogue (eRASS1) is the largest collection of X-ray sources ever published.
The agency said, "In the first six months of observation, eROSITA has already discovered more X-ray sources than have been known in the 60-year history of X-ray astronomy."
Besides around 7,10,000 supermassive black holes in distant galaxies, the 9,00,000 high-energy cosmic sources also included 1,80,000 X-ray emitting stars in the Milky Way, 12,000 clusters of galaxies and a small number of other exotic classes of sources like X-ray emitting binary stars, supernova remnants, pulsars, and other objects.&nbsp;
Andrea Merloni, eROSITA principal investigator, commented on the report saying, "These are mind-blowing numbers for X-ray astronomy."
"We've detected more sources in 6 months than the big flagship missions XMM-Newton and Chandra have done in nearly 25 years of operation," she added.

ISRO welcomed the new year with the launch of its first X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite that would offer insights into celestial objects like black holes, onboard a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle rocket on Monday.
The launch comes after the success of its Gaganyaan Test Vehicle D1 mission in October.
The PSLV-C58 rocket, in its 60th mission carrries primary payload XPoSat and 10 other satellites to be deployed in low earth orbits.
The X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) is aimed to investigate the polarisation of intense X-ray sources in space.
According to ISRO, it is the first dedicated scientific satellite from ISRO to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.
Besides ISRO, the US-based National Aeronautics Space Agency (NASA) conducted a similar study -- the Imaging X-Ray Polarimetry Explorer mission in December 2021 on the remnants of supernova explosions, the particle streams emitted by black holes and other cosmic events.
While space-based X-ray astronomy has been established in India focusing on imaging, and time domain studies, Monday's mission marks a major value-addition to the scientific fraternity, the space agency said.
The objective of the PSLV-C58 mission includes measuring polarisation of X-rays in the energy band 8-30 keV emanating from about 50 potential cosmic sources, to carry out long term spectral and temporal studies of cosmic x-ray sources.
The X-Ray polarisation serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for examining the radiation mechanism and geometry of celestial sources.
The primary payload of XPoSat is POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-Rays) which is designed to measure polarimetry parameters by Raman Research Institute and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing) built by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. The Mission life is about 5 years.
The space-based study of X-Ray polarisation is gaining utmost importance internationally, and in this context, the XPoSat mission would play a significant role, ISRO added.
XPoSat is anticipated to bring substantial benefits to the Astronomy community globally. Apart from its capability of timing and spectroscopy-based observations, the insights derived from X-ray polarisation measurements on celestial objects like black holes, neutron stars, and active galactic nuclei, hold the potential to significantly improve the understanding of their physics.
The mission is poised to play a pivotal role in building expertise in X-Ray polarimetry in India, providing a foundation for future advancements and fostering a collaborative network within the astronomy community.
The 44.4-meter-tall PSLV rocket would first deploy the primary satellite into a 650 km Low Earth Orbit around 21 minutes after lift-off and later the scientists would bring the satellite to a lower altitude of about 350 km by restarting the fourth stage of the vehicle, for conducting the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module-3 (POEM-3) experiment.
The payloads are Radiation Shielding Experiment Module by TakeMe2Space, Women Engineered Satellite by LBS Institute of Technology for Women, BeliefSat (an amateur radio satellite) built by K J Somaiya Institute of Technology, Green Impulse Transmitter by Inspecity Space Labs Pvt Ltd, LEATTD -- Launching Expeditions for Aspiring Technologies Technology Demonstrator by Dhruva Space Pvt Ltd, RUDRA 0.3HPGP and ARKA 200 developed by Bellatrix Aerospace Pvt Ltd, Dust Experiment (DEX) built by PRL, ISRO and Fuel Cell Power System and Si based High Energy cell built by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.

 Dark matter, accounting for 85% of the universe's mass, doesn't interact with light, making it invisible. Scientists study its distribution by observing its gravitational effects on visible matter. Axions, described as "fuzzy" due to their wave-like behavior, can have wavelengths larger than entire galaxies. This fuzziness might explain the universe's unexpected lack of clumpiness. The research team conducted computer simulations to predict the appearance of relic light and galaxy distribution in a universe with long dark matter waves. Have you seen enough on earth and want to travel more? Ever dreamt of travelling to space? Well, Richard Branson's space tourism company, Virgin Galactic says it will launch its first commercial spaceflight before the end of this month. According to reports, the launch window for the flight, which is called Galactic 01 is from 27 June to 30 June.
The total journey time will be 90 minutes, with passengers experiencing a few minutes of weightlessness in the space plane's cabin.
The flights are designed to give passengers views from space at the top of its climb and allow them a few minutes to experience weightlessness. They cost $450,000 (&pound;352,170) per person.
Virgin Galactic has sold more than 800 tickets to people who want to ride over 80km (260,000ft) above Earth.
The shares of Virgin Galactic jumped more than 40% in extended New York trading after the After the announcement to investors.&nbsp;
The company said its second commercial spaceflight will follow in early August, and it expects to operate monthly spaceflights from then on.

If all the tests go smoothly, Chandrayaan-3, India's ambitious plan to land on the surface of the Moon, will be launched between July 12 and 19, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath said here on Monday.
Speaking to the media after inaugurating a one-day workshop and space exhibition at Kothavara St Xavier's College organised by ISRO, Somanath said that the Chandrayaan has already reached the launch pad in Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, from U R Rao Satellite Centre.
"The final preparations are going on. It will be completed by the end of this month. At the same time, the rocket, LVM-3, is going to be used for this launch. Its assembly is going on. All parts for its assembly have reached Sriharikota," Somanath said.
He said the rocket assembly will also be completed by the end of this month and then there is a process to integrate Chandrayaan-3 with the rocket. He said that too would be done in the last week of June and many tests will follow.
"There is a window for launch between July 12 and 19 and we can only launch it during that window. We can do it later also but we will suffer fuel losses," Somanath said.
However, he said, the launch would be conducted during this window only if all the tests are conducted successfully.
He said in order to prevent any problems during the upcoming launch, corrections have been made in Chandrayaan-3, in its hardware, structure, computers, software, and sensors.
"More fuel has been added, the landing legs have been strengthened further. Big solar panels have been fixed for more energy production. Another additional sensor is also added.
"To measure its speed, a 'Laser Doppler VelociMeter' instrument, which was developed in the last year, has been added. We have also changed its algorithm and new software has been added to help Chandrayaan to land in another area if there is any failure at the scheduled spot," the ISRO chief said.&nbsp;

Saudi Arabia will send its first ever woman astronaut on a space mission later this year, state media has reported, in the latest move to revamp the kingdom's ultra-conservative image.
Rayyana Barnawi will join fellow Saudi male astronaut Ali Al-Qarni on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) "during the second quarter of 2023", the official Saudi Press Agency said on Sunday.
The astronauts "will join the crew of the AX-2 space mission" and the space flight will "launch from the USA", the agency said.
The oil-rich country will be following in the footsteps of the neighbouring United Arab Emirates which in 2019 became the first Arab country to send one of its citizens into space.
At the time, astronaut Hazzaa al-Mansoori spent eight days on the ISS. Another fellow Emirati, Sultan al-Neyadi, will also make a voyage later this month.
Nicknamed the "Sultan of Space", 41-year-old Neyadi will become the first Arab astronaut to spend six months in space when he blasts off for the ISS aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Gulf monarchies have been seeking to diversify their energy-reliant economies through a plethora of projects.

An asteroid, a spacecraft, and a big crash. This is American space agency NASA's DART mission, humanity's first attempt to try and eliminate space threats to Earth.

The system consists of Dimorphos, an asteroid moonlet orbiting the larger Didymos asteroid. Dimorphos will be around 11 million km from Earth when NASA's DART crashes into it. While Didymos is 780m in diameter, Dimorphos is 160m in diameter. Both Didymos and Dimorphos do not pose a threat to Earth.
In its mission, NASA does not want to destroy the asteroid. Instead, the space agency wants to test a different technique of getting rid of threatening space objects.
The DART mission is the world's first test of kinetic impact technique. This relies on kinetic energy to displace an asteroid. Kinetic energy is energy possessed by an object which is in motion. The kinetic energy will be transferred to the asteroid when the spacecraft crashes into it. The ultimate aim is to be able to change an asteroid's path in space away from Earth. NASA wants to test changing the speed and path of an asteroid.
While the mission may seem straightforward, it consists of many complicated stages.Also, the final impact will take place without any human intervention, so preparations have to be flawless.
In the run-up to the impact, the DART team will continue making trajectory corrections till 24 hours before the crash. By 25 September, the target's position will be known within 2 km. From this point on, the DART craft has to guide itself autonomously until it hits the asteroid without any human guidance.
The impact is slated to take place at 7:14 pm EDT on 26 September. In India, the time would be 4:44 am on 27 September. The DART craft will hit the asteroid at an astounding speed of 6.6 km per second. Onboard systems will keep sending images to Earth till the last minute. A small craft named LICIACube will detach itself earlier to record the impact from a distance.
NASA scientists estimate that the crash will change the asteroid speed by less than 1%. This would result in the asteroid's orbit time being altered by many minutes. This change should be enough to be seen from Earth. Also, scientists will compare the results of the impact and computer simulations to see their efficiency.
An asteroid hitting Earth is believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs. Therefore, NASA takes the threat of killer space objects very seriously.
The threat is posed by Near-Earth objects which are asteroids and comets revolving around the Sun. Their orbit can bring them close to Earth, thus becoming a threat. NASA has set up the Planetary Defense Coordination Office, or PDCO, to monitor this. PDCO provides early detection of potential threats. These include near-Earth objects within 5 million miles of Earth's orbit. Objects 30-50 metres in size are big enough to damage the Earth's surface.
The PDCO searches for such space objects, maps their orbits, and measures their physical features. The PDCO also sponsors studies on methods to eliminate these space threats.
If an asteroid has a chance greater than 1% of hitting Earth over the next 50 years, it is classified as a significant threat. Here is what happens next.

So, what did the Chinese telescope recently pick up? The Sky Eye telescope detected narrow-band electromagnetic signals, and this discovery was called a possible sign of alien life in Chinese media reports.
However, China's state-backed Science & Technology Daily later deleted the report. The Sky Eye telescope launched a search for alien life in September 2020. I think we have opened a new window onto these dark objects, which can’t be seen any other way,” Jessica Lu, a UC Berkeley associate professor of astronomy, and lead author said in a statement.

China on Sunday successfully launched three astronauts on a six-month mission to complete the construction of the country’s space station currently orbiting the earth.
The Shenzhou-14 spacecraft carrying astronauts Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, was lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.
Minutes later, the official at the ground control declared the mission a “great success”, saying the spacecraft has reached its designated orbit.
The trio will cooperate with the ground team to complete the assembly and construction of the Tiangong space station, developing it from a single-module structure into a national space laboratory with three modules -- the core module, Tianhe and two lab modules -- Wentian and Mengtian.
The launch was telecast live all over the country.
The mission will build the space station into a national space laboratory, Lin Xiqiang, the deputy director of the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced on Saturday.
The Shenzhou-14 crew will work with the ground team to complete the rendezvous, docking and transposition of the two lab modules with the core module, Lin said at a pre-launch press conference.
They will enter the two lab modules for the first time and help make the environment suitable for their stay, he said, adding that they will unlock and install a dozen of scientific experiment cabinets in the two modules.
This is the 2nd set of six astronauts China has sent to build its space station.
Earlier, a three-member Chinese astronaut crew which included a woman returned to the earth in April after spending a record six months, building vital parts of the space station which is expected to be ready by this year.
They had completed the verification of key technologies of its space station, according to the CMSA.
Once ready, China will be the only country to own a space station. The International Space Station (ISS) of Russia is a collaborative project of several countries.
China Space Station (CSS) is also expected to be a competitor to the ISS built by Russia.
Observers say CSS may become the sole space station to remain in orbit once the ISS retires in the coming years.
In February, China unveiled an ambitious plan for its burgeoning space industry which included over 50 space launches and six manned space flights to complete the building of its space station.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) said China will carry out more than 50 space launches in 2022, sending over 140 spacecraft into space.
Chen, who will be the commander of the new mission, participated in the Shenzhou-11 crewed spaceflight mission. Liu was part of the Shenzhou-9 mission and Cai is a newcomer to space, Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA, said at the press conference at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre.
The trio will stay in orbit for six months, Lin said.
During their stay in orbit, the Shenzhou-14 crew will witness the two lab modules, Tianzhou-5 cargo craft and Shenzhou-15 crewed spaceship dock with the core module Tianhe.
They will rotate with the Shenzhou-15 crew in orbit, and return to the Dongfeng landing site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in December, Lin said.
China began constructing its three-module space station in April 2021 with the launch of Tianhe - the first and biggest of the station's three modules.

This is the 2nd set of six astronauts China has sent to build its space station.
Earlier, a three-member Chinese astronaut crew which included a woman returned to the earth in April after spending a record six months, building vital parts of the space station which is expected to be ready by this year.
They had completed the verification of key technologies of its space station, according to the CMSA.
Once ready, China will be the only country to own a space station. The International Space Station (ISS) of Russia is a collaborative project of several countries.
China Space Station (CSS) is also expected to be a competitor to the ISS built by Russia.
Observers say CSS may become the sole space station to remain in orbit once the ISS retires in the coming years.
In February, China unveiled an ambitious plan for its burgeoning space industry which included over 50 space launches and six manned space flights to complete the building of its space station.
The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) said China will carry out more than 50 space launches in 2022, sending over 140 spacecraft into space.
Chen, who will be the commander of the new mission, participated in the Shenzhou-11 crewed spaceflight mission. Liu was part of the Shenzhou-9 mission and Cai is a newcomer to space, Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA, said at the press conference at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre.
The trio will stay in orbit for six months, Lin said.
During their stay in orbit, the Shenzhou-14 crew will witness the two lab modules, Tianzhou-5 cargo craft and Shenzhou-15 crewed spaceship dock with the core module Tianhe.
They will rotate with the Shenzhou-15 crew in orbit, and return to the Dongfeng landing site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in December, Lin said.
China began constructing its three-module space station in April 2021 with the launch of Tianhe - the first and biggest of the station's three modules.

Metal fragments of all shapes and sizes have been falling from the sky in Gujarat over the last week. 
On May 12, 3 metal balls fell in Bhalej, Khambholaj and Rampura villages of Gujarat's Anand district. The police at that time had said that preliminary inspection shows that the metal balls could be part of a satellite. 
More such incidents have been reported from Vadodara, Kheda and Sojitra districts since then. 
Forensic experts have been called, a team from ISRO has collected samples but there has been no comment from them so far. 
Providing one explanation for the incidents, astronomer Jonathan McDowell had tweeted on May 12 that the debris could possibly be from the 're-entry of the third stage of a Chinese launch rocket.  The rocket had lifted off on September 9, 2021, carrying a 5,500-kg communication satellite to geostationary transit orbit.
In an interview to Indian Express, Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said that he was identifying the debris based on tracking data which shows that the Chinese launch rocked was the only reentry that went near India on May 12. 
He also told Indian Express that though the predicted path was 1000 kms north of villages where the metal objects fell but it is within the uncertainities range.
