A BJP member from Cuttack, Bhartruhari Mahtab was appointed as pro-tem Speaker by President Droupadi Murmu under Article 95(1) of the Constitution.&nbsp;

Seven-term parliamentarian Bhartruhari Mahtab was on Thursday appointed pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said.
He said Mahtab, a BJP member from Cuttack, was appointed as pro-tem Speaker by President Droupadi Murmu under Article 95(1) of the Constitution to perform the duties of the Lok Sabha presiding officer till the election of the Speaker.
The newly elected members of the 18th Lok Sabha will take oath or affirmation before the pro-tem Speaker, who will be assisted by a panel of chairpersons comprising Congress leader K Suresh, DMK leader T R Baalu, BJP members Radha Mohan Singh and Faggan Singh Kulaste and TMC leader Sudip Bandyopadyay.
Mathab quit the BJD ahead of the Lok Sabha elections to join the BJP.
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha will begin on June 24. The newly elected members will take oath/affirmation on June 24-25.
The election of the Speaker is scheduled to take place on June 26.&nbsp;

A meeting of the top BJP leaders is expected to be held at Defence Minister Rajnath Singh&rsquo;s residence here on Tuesday evening to discuss the names of the candidate for the Lok Sabha Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Some of the NDA constituents are also expected to participate in the meeting, sources said.
The election for the Lok Sabha speaker's post will be held on June 26, two days after the first session of the Parliament begins.
Meanwhile, a separate meeting of the Maharashtra BJP core group will be held at the party headquarters this evening to discuss the party&rsquo;s strategy for the assembly polls due to be held in the state later this year, sources said.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, party state president Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Ashish Shelar, MP Ashok Chauhan, Minister Girish Mahajan and other leaders are expected to attend the meeting to be presided over by BJP chief J P Nadda.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP general secretary (organization) BL Santhosh are also expected to be present at this meeting, according to sources.

The Punjab Assembly on Wednesday witnessed noisy scenes after Congress MLAs stormed the well of the House for being denied a discussion on the law and order situation in the state, while the SAD condemned the invoking of the National Security Act (NSA) against radical preacher Amritpal Singh.
As Question Hour began in the budget session of the Vidhan Sabha here, Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa asked the Speaker about the adjournment motion on the law and order issue moved by his party.
Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan told Bajwa that it has been disallowed. It angered the Congress legislators and they rushed to the well of the House and shouted slogans.
Later during Zero Hour, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali said an "atmosphere of terror" has been created in the state, referring to the police action against Amritpal Singh and members of his outfit 'Waris Punjab De.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on 23 December 2022, six days ahead of the scheduled culmination of the Parliament's Winter Session.
The decision to curtail the session was taken by the Business Advisory Committee which is headed by the Lok Sabha Speaker, and has MPs of various parties as members.
Before adjourning the House, Speaker Om Birla said that the productivity of the Lower House was 97%. The session saw major disruption by the Opposition, mainly over the India-China border clash in Tawang.

The session which began on September 14, witnessed passage of several bills in both Houses, including those which sought to replace ordinances issued recently. The decision to curtail the session has been conveyed to floor leaders of parties in the lower house, the sources said.
The Monsoon Session was otherwise scheduled to end on October 1.
Several MPs, including a few ministers, have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last few days.
On Monday, eight members of Rajya Sabha were suspended over their "unruly behaviour" during the passage of the two key farm bills on Sunday.
A number of opposition parties on Tuesday staged a walkout from Rajya Sabha and decided to boycott proceedings of the House till the suspension of the eight members is revoked, even as the government insisted on their apology.
In Lok Sabha too, various opposition parties, including the Congress and the TMC boycotted the House in solidarity with the suspended Rajya Sabha members.
Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said all opposition parties are boycotting Parliament in solidarity with the suspended Rajya Sabha members.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, the TMC, the BSP and the TRS, walked out of the Lok Sabha after Chowdhury's announcement.
