India and Sri Lanka Monday adopted a futuristic vision to expand their partnership, resolved to soon conclude a defence cooperation pact and decided to ramp up energy ties by establishing electricity grid connectivity and multi-product petroleum pipelines.
The decisions were taken during wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka.
Prime Minister Modi said both sides decided to emphasise investment-led growth and connectivity for the India-Sri Lanka economic partnership, and it was decided that physical, digital and energy connectivity will be key pillars of the cooperation.
Work will be done to establish electricity grid connectivity and multi-product petroleum pipelines, Modi said, adding India will supply liquefied natural gas to the island nation's power plants.

The prime minister also announced that a ferry service will be started between Rameshwaram and Talaimanar to boost connectivity between the two nations.
"We both agree that our security interests are interconnected. We have decided to soon finalise the defence cooperation agreement. There has also been an agreement for cooperation on hydrography," Modi said.
The vexed fishermen issue also figured in the talks.

"We also discussed issues related to the livelihood of fishermen. We agree that we must proceed with a humanitarian approach to this matter," Modi said.
Referring to the Tamil issue, Modi said India hopes that the Sri Lankan government will fulfil the aspirations of the community.
The prime minister also noted that India has so far provided Lines of Credit and grant assistance worth USD 5 billion to Sri Lanka.

After Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka, the country's parliament swiftly replaced him with Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was then serving as prime minister.
Under his leadership, the country has made significant progress, with key economic indicators improving, and no shortages of food and fuel. Inflation, which peaked at 70%, is now almost under control.
But, the common man is still struggling to make ends meet, with some having to borrow money for daily expenses. There's an exodus of youth in search of jobs and better opportunities.
While Sri Lanka narrowly avoided bankruptcy, thanks to timely interventions by the International Monetary Fund and countries like China and India, the country is now grappling with the weight of its massive $92 billion debt.
Citizens are also disappointed that the key demands of the 2022 protests are yet to be fulfilled. Rajapaksa and allies are yet to be held accountable for the the economic mismanagement that led to the crisis, and there is still no limitations imposed on presidential powers. The movement seeks a democratic overhaul to prevent similar crises, emphasizing the need for a new political system capable of stabilizing the nation's economy and politics.
In this backdrop, a record 38 candidates are vying for the presidency in the September 21 election. They have outlined similar visions for the country's future, promising to develop new industries to drive economic growth, boost agriculture, broaden the tax base to increase revenue and create tens of thousands of jobs.
The key candidates in the election are Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sajith Premadasa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Namal Rajapaksa.
Wickremesinghe, a six-time former prime minister, is seeking re-election as an independent candidate. However, his presidency has been marred by allegations of protecting the Rajapaksa family and shielding them from prosecution. He has denied the claims.
Sajith Premadasa, leader of the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya, is running on the plank of economic reform, promising to increase taxes on the wealthy and improve conditions for the poor.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake, candidate of the leftist National People's Party alliance, has gained momentum with his promises of tough anti-corruption measures and good governance.

Sri Lanka recorded their worst World Cup performance since 1992, winning only two of their nine games.

The government, which is split over the minister&rsquo;s decision to sack the SLC board of management, came out with a report, recommending a brand new constitution for the governing body with a new voting structure to appoint office bearers.

Abeysekera began his travels to cheer for the Lankan cricket team from the 1979 World Cup and since then he attended all major cricketing events except the ongoing World Cup owing to poor health.
His friendships with leading Lankan cricketers like Arjuna Ranatunga, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Kumar Sangakkara made him an unavoidable figure in the country's cricketing landscape.
Abeysekera also shared a cordial relationship with Indian cricketers like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Rohit had visited Abeysekera at his home in Colombo during the recent Asia Cup.
Kohli had invited Abeysekera to the Indian dressing room for a short interaction during the tour to Sri Lanka in 2015.
However, Abeysekera&rsquo;s health was not at its best over the last year and Sri Lanka Cricket had recently given him LKR 5 million to meet his medical expenses.&nbsp;

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved the policy to issue free tourist visas to travellers from India and six other countries, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry said on Tuesday, amidst efforts to rebuild the debt-trapped island nation's tourism sector.
Foreign Minister Sabry in a statement said that this would be carried out as a pilot project effective until March 31, 2024.
The Cabinet approved free entry to travellers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand with immediate effect.
Tourists from these countries will be able to obtain visas when visiting Sri Lanka, without a fee.
India is traditionally Sri Lanka&rsquo;s top inbound tourism market.
In the September arrival figures, India topped with over 30,000 arrivals or 26 per cent with Chinese tourists trailing at over 8,000 arrivals as the second largest group.
Tourist arrivals to the island had slumped since the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings that left 270 persons, including 11 Indians, dead and over 500 injured.
Sri Lanka, which has been grappling with unprecedented economic turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948, is also facing political unrest with protesters demanding President Rajapaksa's resignation.
The economic crisis has prompted an acute shortage of essential items like food, medicine, cooking gas and other fuel, toilet paper and even matches, with Sri Lankans for months being forced to wait in lines lasting hours outside stores to buy fuel and cooking gas.

In reply, Dutch off-spinner Aryan Dutt (3/44) snared Kusal Perera (5) and skipper Kusal Mendis (8) inside the powerplay, but Sri Lanka never lost sight of the target on a dry and spinning Ekana pitch with Samarawickrama anchoring their chase without taking any risks.
Lending solidity to the middle-order, Samarawickrama, who slammed a maiden ODI hundred against Pakistan earlier, got to a well-deserved half-century -- his sixth in ODIs -- in 53 balls en route to his unbeaten knock of 91 to seal Sri Lanka's chase with 10 balls to spare.
This was bottom-placed Sri Lanka's first win after enduring three losses on the trot in the 10-team showpiece event.
Pathum Nissanka (54; 52b) came up with a third straight half-century to set it up before Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka took the chase away from the Netherlands in a 77-run fourth-wicket stand.
For the Dutch bowlers, the execution was missing unlike their upset win over South Africa at Dharamsala three days back.
They either strayed on the leg, or bowled wide on the off-stump even as the Lankan batters were happy to take singles and twos to keep the required run-rate near the five-run mark.
The left-handed Asalanka hit two boundaries and the only six of the innings when he broke the shackles and stepped out to punish Dutt.
Just when the Lankan duo of Samarawickrama and Asalanka was in cruise mode, Dutt broke the partnership cleaning up the left-hander in his last over that also pumped up the Dutch camp.
But without any scoreboard pressure -- 82 required off 104 balls -- the seasoned Dhananjaya de Silva played sensibly, rotating the strike to give the well-set Samarawickrama more opportunities.
The duo, however, failed to complete the chase as De Silva got out in the 47th over after being bowled by Colin Ackermann.
But there were no further mishaps and it was Dushan Hemantha who hit the winning runs, hitting Acerkmann for a boundary in the penultimate over.
Earlier, the 35-year-old Engelbrecht, who had retired from all forms of cricket after playing for Cape Cobras in South Africa in 2016 only to be back playing for the Netherlands, was at his best during a gritty 82-ball 70.
Engelbrecht, who came in at No 7, hit one six and four fours in his knock and shared a 130-run partnership with No 8 batter Logan van Beek. Van Beek also secured a maiden fifty as the pair turned the tide for the Dutch after they were reeling at 91 for six in the 22nd over.
Comeback man Kasun Rajitha (4/50) and their in-form left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka (4/49) were the pick of the Lankan bowlers but they lacked support at the other end as the Dutchmen made rapid progress following their seventh-wicket partnership.
Fifteen years after a young Engelbrecht in Proteas colours took a flying catch to dismiss Virat Kohli in India's U-19 World Cup triumph in 2008, the Dutch all-rounder is living a dream.
Playing top-tier cricket did not seem realistic for Engelbrecht as he slipped into oblivion while pursuing his MBA.
But he picked the bat again after his family moved to the Netherlands in 2021, and head coach Ryan Cook gave him an ODI debut against New Zealand in the World Cup.
Engelbrecht's moment of reckoning came here when he led a stunning recovery using his wealth of experience.
In a clash between the two bottom-rung teams, Sri Lanka held the upper hand by reducing the Netherlands to 91/6.
On a high after their stunning upset win over South Africa four days back, Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards had opted to bat after winning the toss but things unfolded differently.
Engelbrecht, however, refused to buckle under pressure and took charge of the proceedings, taking the spin duo of Dushan Hemantha and Dhananjay de Silva to the cleaners in the middle overs.
Sri Lanka let the game slip away from their grasp by not bringing back their pace duo of Madushanka and Rajitha, who returned as late as in the 40th over.
The Lankan pace duo had built up pressure by dismissing the Dutch top-five inside 19 overs.
