A non-local medical student at the Srinagar Government Medical College was suspended on Wednesday following protests by fellow students against his alleged blasphemous post on a caller app.
"Apropos certain reports from GMC Srinagar, it is to inform that immediate cognisance of the matter was taken by GMC Srinagar administration. Pending enquiry the concerned individual has been suspended with immediate effect," the GMC Srinagar posted on X.
"An enquiry comprising 13 HOD's/HOU's has been initiated for necessary action under the rules. All concerned are requested to maintain peace and tranquillity in the campus," it added.
Earlier, protests broke out at GMC Srinagar over the alleged blasphemous post by a non-local medical student against the Prophet, officials said.
Dozens of students and several junior doctors held a protest against the non-local medical student at GMC Srinagar for his alleged blasphemous display picture on a calling application, the officials said.
One of the protestors said they had given three hours time to the student for removing the display picture but the latter refused to do so.
The protestors are now demanding action against the student for allegedly hurting the sentiments of Muslims, they said.

Srinagar records 38% turnout, highest since 1996

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the political parties congratulated the people of Srinagar constituency on the "historic" voter turnout.

A voter turnout of 38 per cent was recorded in the redrawn Srinagar Lok Sabha seat without any untoward incident on Monday, the highest since 1996 when the constituency in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed nearly 41 per cent polling.
The Srinagar constituency, which saw the first general election after the abrogation of Article 370 in J-K, recorded 38 per cent voting till 11 pm, according to the Election Commission of India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded voters in Srinagar for an encouraging turnout.
"The abrogation of Article 370 has enabled the potential and aspirations of the people to find full expression. Happening at the grassroots level, it is great for the people of J-K, in particular the youth," he said in a post on X.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the political parties congratulated the people of Srinagar constituency on the "historic" voter turnout.
Kashmiri Pandits from the constituency flocked to special polling stations in Jammu and voted for the rehabilitation of their community on "social, economic, and political" fronts.
Voting took place in the districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal, and Pulwama, and partly in Budgam and Shopian districts at around 2,135 polling stations across the Srinagar parliamentary constituency with live webcasting at all the polling stations, the EC said in a statement.
Polling started at 7 am with long queues of enthusiastic voters waiting to cast their votes, it said.
Voters of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama, and Shopian showed up in record numbers to cast their votes in a show of faith and enthusiasm in the election process, it added.
According to the EC, the highest polling in this constituency in the last 34 years has been in 1996 when nearly 41 per cent voters used their franchise.
In 2019, 14.43 per cent votes polled whereas the figure in previous parliamentary elections stood at 25.86 per cent (2014), 25.55 (2009), 18.57 (2004), 11.93 (1999) and 30.06 per cent (1998), the statement said.
National Conference candidate Aga Ruhullah, PDP's Wahid Para, JK Apni Party's Ashraf Mir and DPAP's Amit Bhat are among 24 candidates fighting from the Srinagar seat. In the 2019 general elections, only 12 candidates were in the fray from the seat.
The Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency was redrawn after the delimitation and parts of Budgam in central Kashmir were taken away from it, while Pulwama district and parts of Shopian district were added.
In a post on X, LG Sinha said, "Today, people came out in large numbers to cast their votes in Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency and reaffirmed their faith in democracy and the constitution. I commend the hard work by all the stakeholders for free, fair, peaceful and smooth conduct of the polling." "I truly appreciate the enthusiasm of electors and hopeful to see historic turnout in the next two phases," he added.
Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to flee from the valley in the early 90s under fear of militancy, lined up in long queues amid tight security to exercise their franchise.
"I have voted for our permanent return to Kashmir valley in an atmosphere of peace and security. We have been waiting for the past 34 years to live in the valley. We hope this dream of ours will materialise now," Om Prakash, who was carried on a wheelchair from his quarters in the Jagti migrant camp in Jammu, said.
Meanwhile, three generations of the Abdullah family cast their vote in the Srinagar constituency.
National Conference president and former J-K chief minister Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and his two grandsons and first-time electors Zahir and Zamir cast their vote at a polling station at the Burn Hall School here.
"We have two first-time voters with us. It is for the first time that three generations of our family are voting together," Omar Abdullah, also a former chief minister, said.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer P K Pole said all the 2,135 polling stations were connected to CCTV network and that no untoward incident has been noticed.
Pole thanked about 8,500 polling staff and 17,000 security force personnel for ensuring free and fair election in Srinagar seat having over 17.47 lakh-strong electorate.
"I also thank the candidates for enthusiastic participation in the campaign and for mobilising the voters," he told reporters here.
Srinagar seat was redrawn in the 2022 delimitation exercise in Jammu and Kashmir. The constituency comprises 18 assembly segments which are spread over five districts of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Budgam and Shopian.
According to the official data, Habbakadal was the only assembly segment which registered a turnout of less than 20 per cent where only 14.01 per cent voters cast their votes.
In order to ensure inclusive voting, polling stations managed by women, specially abled persons and youths were set up. There were 21 green and eco-friendly polling stations, the EC said in a statement.
The Commission enabled Kashmiri migrant voters residing at various relief camps in Delhi, Jammu, and Udhampur to also have the option of voting in person at designated special polling stations or using postal ballot.
The good voter turnout signalled a paradigm shift from the past voting patterns in the Srinagar constituency.
"I am voting for the first time. We want our representation in the Centre who will become our voice. That is the reason I have come to vote," Mohammad Asif, a resident of Lal Bazar, said.
Bashir Ahmad Bhat, an elderly man, said it was time to stand up for Kashmiri identity and save its resources for local people.
"We all know what happened in 2019... We have to make ourselves heard and Parliament is the best place to make the noise," Bhat said after casting his vote at a polling station in Old Srinagar city.
Rafeeqa, a resident of Khanyar, said she has voted to contribute her bit in stopping "injustice" with people of Kashmir.
"We are losing jobs. Electricity is becoming dearer, food supplies through public distribution system have been reduced drastically. I have voted against all this," she said.

To create a &ldquo;festival-like environment&rdquo; on the day of voting, poll authorities in Srinagar district have prepared 32 theme-based polling booths that are colour-coordinated as per its message.
Polling booths in pink, red, blue have been prepared as per their theme i.e. women voters, PwD voters and young voters. Eight polling booths have also been set up to go with its theme of environmental sustainability.
Srinagar will vote to elect its Lok Sabha MP in the fourth phase on May 13.
The 32 polling stations will have vibrant and colourful message boards, so that voters experience a festival-like environment, besides promoting participatory and inclusive voting in Srinagar, said Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, District Election Officer (DEO), Srinagar.
"...the District Election Office, Srinagar has made polling stations colourfully vibrant, conveying special messages regarding women, persons with disabilities, (PwD) and the youth, besides (making) environmentally-viable and sustainable polling stations," he said.
Bhat, who is also the Returning Officer of Srinagar parliamentary constituency, said that eight pink polling stations have been established for women in different areas of Srinagar &ndash; from Hazratbal, Anchar to Central Shalteng.
He said these polling stations would be managed by an all-women staff, comprising booth-level officers, presiding and polling officers, police and security forces.
The polling stations have the women-centric theme to drive home the point that women are capable of discharging duties in any sphere of life, Bhat said.
Bhat said eight red polling stations have been set up for persons with disabilities which will be staffed by PwDs.
"These polling stations have been equipped with wheelchairs, ramps, braille script and other features to infuse confidence into differently-abled to make voting process a smooth activity for them.
"...the idea is to instill confidence among the section and encourage them to vote wherever they are besides increasing sensitisation about their issues," the DEO said.
Additionally, more than 40 per cent of PwDs have already been given the opportunity to cast votes under ECI's initiative &lsquo;Vote from Home&rsquo;, he said.
The three-day campaign for home voting which was flagged on May 7 by the DEO concluded Thursday.
Eight polling stations have been painted blue across Srinagar district for the youth.
"To foster the cause of environmental sustainability, eight polling stations have been coloured green while plantation activity shall be carried out on the polling day by the first voter," he said adding that the polling stations will be plastic-free.
Nearly 17.50 lakh people are going to decide the fate of the 24 candidates in the fray for the Lok Sabha polls in Srinagar on May 13.
Among these, over two lakh are the first-time voters, who are in the age group of 18-20.

A migrant worker from Amritsar was shot dead by terrorists in Srinagar, the police said.&nbsp;

Terrorists shot dead a worker from Punjab while another sustained injuries in the Habba Kadal area of Srinagar on Wednesday, officials said
Amritpal Singh, a resident of Amritsar, was shot by the terrorists from point blank range with AK rifle at Shalla Kadal locality in Habba Kadal around 7 pm, the officials said.
They said Singh died on the spot while another non-local worker identified as Rohit, aged 25, sustained injuries in the incident.
Rohit also hails from Amritsar. He was hit by the bullets in the abdomen and is undergoing treatment at SMHS hospital here.
The police have taken cognisance of the incident and cordoned off the area to track down the assailants. This is first attack by terrorists on a non-local in Kashmir this year.
Last year, the terrorists carried out several attacks on non-local workers in valley including in Anantnag and Shopian districts.&nbsp;

Three "hybrid" terrorists involved in last week's attack on a policeman in Bemina area of Srinagar city have been arrested, Director General of Police Jammu and Kashmir R R Swain said on Sunday.
Constable Mohammad Hafeez Chak was attacked on December 9 while he was returning home.
The DGP said the conspiracy was hatched by one Pakistan-based terrorist Arjumand alias Hamza Burhan who got in touch with a local mastermind Danish Ahmad Malla to carry out the attack.
"The hybrid terrorists who were involved in the attack have been arrested. This briefing is about the success that the J&amp;K Police has achieved in tracing the killers (attackers) of one of our policemen," Swain told reporters here.
"Constable Mohammad Hafeez Chak fortunately survived the attack. We hope and pray that he will be back hale and hearty. As far as the killers (are concerned), they had done their job. Six bullets were fired, three hit the cop and three did not," he added.
Hybrid terrorists are those who carry out attacks and then slip back into their routine lives, police said.
Swain said Malla, who lives in the same locality as the policeman, recruited two hybrid terrorists -- Imtiyaz Khanday and Mehnaan Khan.
"They managed (to get) pistols and followed him for several days before carrying out the attack. The pistol used (in the attack) has been recovered at the instance of Khanday who had fired the bullets," he said.
The DGP said another pistol was recovered from Khan while 57 pistol rounds were recovered from Malla.
Swain said during questioning, the terrorists revealed that they had finalised a list of targets.
"They had a number of other targets. While some were finalised, others were in the process of being identified. Most of the targets were policemen but there were some non-policemen also on their radar," he said.
Asked if the arrested men had any hand in the killing of Inspector Masroor Wani, the DGP said the case was being investigated by the NIA.
"That (case) is still under investigation, the NIA has taken over the investigation. I think It would be inappropriate to prematurely start connecting," he said.
The DGP said Turkish pistol Canik TP9 was used in carrying out the attack.
Canik TP9 is a high-quality pistol and its lightweight makes it very good, he said.
It was not the first time that Canik TP9 has been recovered from terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, the police chief said.
"But we are seeing a pattern and a trend... this category of small arms is being brought into Jammu and Kashmir through drones and through a variety of other means, being smuggled into our side from Pakistan," he said.&nbsp;

Protest at NIT Srinagar: engineering institution shut for winter break 10 days before schedule

The Islamia College of Science and Commerce suspended all classwork and internal examinations scheduled for the day.

The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar closed for winter vacation on Thursday -- 10 days ahead of schedule -- as a precautionary measure, a day after protests against a student's social media post spread to other institutes.
While NIT Srinagar declared a holiday for Thursday, the Dean of Students Welfare issued a circular announcing winter vacation in the engineering institute from today. The circular also directed all students living in the hostels to vacate the boarding facility with immediate effect.
The Registrar of the institute said the winter vacations "have been preponed only by 10 days" and there will be no academic loss for the students.
"We have winter vacations every year and the same is the case this year also. The vacations were scheduled from December 9 but have been preponed," Registrar Ateekur Rehman told PTI.
Asked about the ongoing examinations of the students, he said the students will write the remaining papers upon their return from winter vacation. "We will ensure that there is no academic loss for the students," he added.
Protests were held at the NIT-Srinagar on Tuesday over a student's social media post allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The protesters demanded stringent action against the non-local student who has been sent home on leave.
The students blocked both the gates of the institution, located in the Nigeen area of the city, and raised slogans inside the campus.
After the protests, police registered a case and started an investigation. Police filed a case against the student for promoting religious enmity between communities.
The website of the NIT Srinagar has been taken down "for maintenance".
"Sorry for the inconvenience but we&rsquo;re performing some maintenance at the moment. If you need to you can always contact us, otherwise, we'll be back online shortly!" the message on the website of the NIT Srinagar reads.
Protests were also held at Amar Singh College and Islamia College here on Wednesday against the post, videos of which were shared by many social media users.
"The police received information about a protest by students at the NIT campus. Upon investigation, it was discovered that a student had posted objectionable content on social media, though the video was not the student's own, but taken from YouTube," Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir, V K Birdi said on Tuesday.
Birdi said the content of the post has hurt the religious feelings of the people.
"The police have received a written complaint from the NIT registrar urging legal action. We have taken legal action under relevant sections of the law. The investigation is going on," the IGP had said.

Doctors were attending to him and his condition was stated to be critical, they said.

Two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said.
The encounter broke out in the Hathlanga forward area in the Uri sector of the north Kashmir district. A search operation is underway in the area, they said.

Srinagar recorded its hottest day in September since 2005 on Sunday, amid a heat spell in Kashmir, according to the meteorological department.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, Srinagar on Sunday recorded a maximum temperature of 32.9 degrees Celsius, which was 4.7 notches above normal.
This is the highest maximum temperature recorded in the city in the month of September since 2005.
While the mercury had climbed to 33.4 degrees Celsius on September 6, 2005, the highest day temperature of 35 degrees Celsius was recorded on 18 September 1934, official data showed.
Likewise, Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded 24 degrees Celsius on Sunday, which was 4.9 degrees Celsius above normal as the popular tourist spot saw its hottest day of the month since 27 September 2009.
Qazigund in south Kashmir experienced its hottest September day since 2019, recording a high of 32.4 degrees Celsius on Sunday -- five notches above normal.&nbsp;

The ban in the Kashmir capital has been imposed after a number of stabbing incidents in different parts of the city.&nbsp;

Srinagar authorities on Friday banned the sale, purchase, and carrying of 'sharp-edged weapons' in public places in view of several stabbing incidents in the city.
The ban was announced by Srinagar District Magistrate Mohammad Aijaz Asad, an official spokesman said.
The decision was taken apparently as a result of several recent incidents of stabbings reported from Qamarwari, Bemina, Kralpora, Batmaloo, Nowhatta, Kothibagh, Rambagh, among other places, as reported by the Senior Superintendent of Police.
The order said that the safety and security of the public is of paramount importance and incidents involving the use of sharp-edged weapons in public places pose a significant threat to the lives and safety of the citizens.
"It has become imperative to check the practice of carrying sharp-edged weapons by people in the territorial jurisdiction of District Srinagar so as to prevent the occurrence of such incidents," it added.

Accordingly, the possession of sharp-edged weapons "whose blade is more than nine inches long or whose blade is more than two inches wide" for any purpose other than domestic, agricultural, scientific, and industrial purposes is a cognizable offence under Arms Act 1959, the order said.
The ban, which comes into effect immediately, will be applicable to business establishments engaged in sale or purchase of such weapons, the spokesman said.
A 'sharp-edged weapon' will be any object or instrument that possesses a blade, an edge, or a point capable of causing injury or harm to individuals, including but not limited to knives, swords, daggers, box cutters, and razors, he said, citing the order.
The order further said the ban will be applicable to everyone except law enforcement agencies, individuals possessing such weapons for legitimate occupational purposes (e.g. butchers, carpenters, electricians, chefs, etc).
The order also said any individual possessing a sharp-edged weapon, will surrender it at the nearest police station within the next 72 hours.&nbsp;

In a shocking incident, a woman influencer allegedly stabbed her would-be husband in Srinagar's Kak Sarai area, as per reports.&nbsp; &nbsp; The accused, Asifa Bashir, from Parimpora, who is said to be a social media influencer, stabbed her fiance namely Adil from Bemina, Srinagar.
In a press release, police said, by the prima facie the stabbing was the result of an altercation due to the objection of the victim regarding her job.
Soon after the incident, Asifa fled from the spot, Police said. In a viral video, Adil can be seen seeking help as the blood is dripping from his lower abdomen.
Adil was taken to the SMHS hospital by the passersby. Upon reaching the hospital Asif was given immediate treatment and his condition is said to be stable now. As per officials.
As per reports Asifa and Adil are engaged and the Nikah had also taken place. The girl is said to be a social media influencer who has taken interviews with many politicians.
The accused was arrested by police and a FIR was registered in Safakadil police station.

A man from Gujarat was recently arrested in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar for allegedly posing as an official in the Prime Minister's Office and enjoying related benefits.
These included a Z-plus security cover, bulletproof vehicles, and accommodation at 5-star hotels, according to news outlet NDTV.
Kiran Bhai Patel's arrest reportedly came to light after he was sent to judicial custody on 16 March 2023.
He shared many photos and videos on social media, visiting popular tourist spots in Jammu and Kashmir with police and paramilitary security, as per reports.

Two Polish tourists died in a massive avalanche that hit the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir's ski resort Gulmarg on Wednesday, police said.
Skiers, both foreigners and locals, were at the slopes when the avalanche hit. At least 19 foreigners have so far been rescued successfully, police said.
The bodies of the two Polish nationals have been recovered and moved to the hospital for medico-legal procedures.
Rescue operations are still in progress in the tourist town, in Baramulla district, with police teams on the job.
The number of those missing is not known.
"Avalanche hit the Afarwat peak #HapathKhud at famous ski resort in #Gulmarg. #Rescue operation has been launched by #Baramulla Police along with other agencies. Reports of some skiers being trapped are being corroborated. More details shall follow," a spokesperson of the Baramulla district police said on Twitter soon after the incident. Videos of the avalanche, showing people running for their lives, circulated widely on social media.&nbsp;

 Speaking about the on-foot march at the rally, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi thanked the people of the valley for giving him a warm welcome.&nbsp;
Praising the spirit of Jammu and Kashmir, Gandhi said, its people gave him immense ''love'' instead of a ''hand grenade''. He further said, that none of the BJP leaders have the guts to carry out a march in the valley, not because the people won't let them, it's because they are ''scared''.&nbsp;
Besides, Congress' 4000km-long march ended in Kashmir with leaders from the opposition in their presence.

4000 km, 12 states: Bharat Jodo Yatra to culminate with flag unfurling, rally in Srinagar

The yatra traversed 12 states and two Union territories in nearly five months after its launch on September 7 last year, clocking over 4,000 km.

The curtains will come down on the Congress' Bharat Jodo Yatra on Monday with a ceremony at the party headquarters here and a rally at the Sher-e-Kashmir stadium where several Opposition leaders are also likely to be present.
The "padyatra" concluded at the Lal Chowk area on Sunday with Rahul Gandhi unfurling the national flag but the official closing would take place on Monday in Srinagar, which is witnessing snowfall.
The yatra traversed 12 states and two Union territories in nearly five months after its launch on September 7 last year, clocking over 4,000 km.

During the course of the yatra, Rahul Gandhi addressed 12 public meetings, over 100 corner meetings, 13 press conferences. He had over 275 planned walking interactions and more than 100 sitting interactions.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will unfurl the national flag at the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters and also unveil a memorial for the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The rally would take place after that.
Kharge had extended invitations to the presidents of over 20 parties, including Trinamool Congress (TMC), Janata Dal (United), Shiv Sena, Telugu Desam Party, National Conference (NC), Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nationalist Congress Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Rashtriya Lok Dal, Indian Union Muslim League, Revolutionary Socialist Party and Janata Dal (Secular).
Some party leaders have expressed their inability to be present at the rally while some would send their representatives.
While parties such as NC, PDP, CPI, CPI(M), Shiv Sena and DMK are likely to have a presence at the rally, there is uncertainty over participation from parties such as SP, BSP and TMC.
Gandhi on Sunday said at a press conference here that the Bharat Jodo Yatra went from South to North but it has had a countrywide effect and asserted that the march gave an alternative vision to the country.&nbsp;

In terms of PM 10 concentration, Kohima was reported to have the cleanest air in the country by the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) with a concentration of 26.77 ug/m3. Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded the lowest PM 2.5 concentration at 26.33 ug/m3 in India in 2022.&nbsp;

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was clogged on 13 January 2023 after the movement of traffic was suspended on the key road, according to news agency ANI.
Movement of vehicles was stopped reportedly due to inclement weather as well as incidents of shooting stones, or landslide with small rocks, in Ramban sector.
The stoppage led to stationary traffic at various points in Udhampur, according to Jammu and Kashmir traffic police.

The police did not specify the number of cases in which the gang was involved. Two vehicles used in the commission of crimes by the gang were seized.
