Multiple media reports state that more than 100 people have died, mostly women and children, in a stampede during a religious event in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district on Tuesday.&nbsp;
Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah, Rajesh Kumar Singh told the PTI news agency that the incident occurred at a 'satsang' in Pulrai village where people had gathered in large numbers.
Eyewitness Shakuntala Devi told PTI that the stampede took place while people were leaving the venue at the end of the 'satsang'. They fell atop each other, she said.
The stampede apparently occurred due to overcrowding, Sikandra Rao police station SHO Ashish Kumar said.
According to officials, a team comprising the Agra additional director general of police and the divisional commissioner of Aligarh will probe the incident.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede and instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures. He announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
The Uttar Pradesh government said an FIR will be registered against the organisers of the programme.
Adityanath also directed the district administration to arrange for proper treatment of those injured and immediately take them to hospitals. He wished them a speedy recovery.
In a post on 'X' in Hindi, he said, "The loss of lives in the unfortunate accident in Hathras district is extremely sad and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the bereaved family." Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh ministers Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary and Sandeep Singh were headed for the incident site and the chief secretary and police chief have been directed to reach the spot.

The Andhra Pradesh government late on Saturday night constituted a one-man Commission of Inquiry to probe into the circumstances that led to two incidents of stampede in which 11 persons were killed in recent days.
The Commission of Inquiry (CoI) will be headed by Justice B Seshasayana Reddy, a retired judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, an order issued by Chief Secretary K S Jawahar Reddy said.
Eight persons were killed in a stampede at Kandukuru town in SPS Nellore district on December 28, 2022 during a political meeting of Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu.
On January 1, three persons were killed in a stampede at a free gift distribution programme, wherein the tragedy occurred some time after former chief minister Naidu had left the venue.
The CoI has been asked to submit its report in a month.

According to an AFP report, nearly 100,000 people turned up for Halloween festivities in Itaewon's narrow alley which did not have enough space to accomodate such a rush.&nbsp;
150 Party goers, mostly in their teens and 20s, clad-in Halloween costumes were crushed in the stampede in the clogged alley of Itaewon while over 100 are injured.&nbsp;
Jeon Ga-eul, 30, who was having a drink at a bar at the moment the stampede hit told AFP, "My friend said: something terrible is happening outside,". "I said: what are you talking about? And then I went outside to see and there were people doing CPR in the street."
The crowd was exceptionally dense on Saturday night, eyewitnesses told AFP, with Jeon saying that even ahead of the disaster, he had felt unsafe.
"There were so many people just being pushed around and I got caught in the crowd and I couldn't get out at first too," he said.
One eye-witness described on Twitter the panic that started when people "kept pushing down" into the already crowded alleyway.

This resulted in "other people screaming and falling down like dominoes," the Twitter user with the handle "jkaesthet1c" wrote.
"I thought I would be crushed to death too as people kept pushing without realising there were people falling down at the start of the stampede," they added.

Meanwhile, South Korea's President Yoon Suk-yeol has declared a period of national mourning Sunday and has ordered a probe into the tragedy.

The Indonesian police fired tear gas that led to hundreds of them running to an exit gate in an effort to escape the police action. Some suffocated in the chaos and others were trampled, the police informed the local reporters. East Java Police chief Nico Afinta said, 'In the incident, 129 people died, 2 of whom are police officers, 34 people died in the stadium and rest in the hospital'. Over 300 were rushed to the hospital but many died on the way and during treatment. Several viral footages show videos of fans rushing towards the ground, fighting, and images of body bags.

 Apologising for the brutal incident, the Indonesian Football Association said that an investigation team has been formed that has left for Malang.

The administration has taken the incident seriously and Agra commissioner Amit Gupta is reaching Mathura to assess the reasons that led to it and provide guidance to the local administration, the official added.

Timely intervention and administration of first aid to the injured helped save many lives, he said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident and directed officials to ensure that all necessary help is provided to the injured, according to an official statement issued in Lucknow.
He also directed the Home Department to ensure proper arrangements are made at religious places during festivals to prevent any untoward incidents, the statement said.&nbsp;

Videos posted on social media by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders showed some girls falling, those behind them stumbling, while others tried to run past. A few people tried to rescue those stuck underneath even as panic increased.

BJP leader Priti Gandhi, while tweeting visuals of the incident, said, "Shocking visuals from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh!&nbsp;A stampede-like situation occurred at the Congress marathon. Several girls fell &amp; have been hurt. Thankfully no lives were lost. Is it right to play with human lives to fulfill your political ambitions, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra?"
Congress leader Supriya Aron reacted to the news by drawing a parallel with the recent stampede at the Vaishno Devi Shrine. She said that the tendency to move before others is part of human nature. She said that participants at the marathon were young girls, and some 'bhaag-daud' (chaos) occurred at the event. She also tendered an apology for the incident.
Videos from the marathon also showed lack of adherence to Covid-appropriate protocol, with no social distancing, and improper use of face masks. This occurred even as the Congress party has been accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of giving preference to crowded rallies instead of controlling the disease's spread.
Uttar Pradesh is headed for Assembly elections with the ruling BJP facing multiple competitors like the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, among others.
