The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming to be the next head coach of the Indian men's national cricket team.
According to a report in the Indian Express, Fleming, who has been the head coach of IPL franchise the Chennai Super Kings since 2009, may be a potential successor to Rahul Dravid.
The report further stated that informal discussions have already taken place during IPL 2024 but the 51-year-old hasn&rsquo;t communicated with the CSK management about any wish to leave the franchise.
According to sources, another reason why Fleming might not apply for the role is because it will require him to be with the team for almost 10 months of the year. The new head coach will be in charge for all 3 formats of the game.
Apart from CSK, Fleming is also the head coach of Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket &ndash; both of which are sister franchises of Chennai-based franchise. He is also the head coach of Southern Brave in The Hundred and had coached Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash for four years.
The BCCI on Monday invited applications for the post of Indian men's cricket team's head coach for a period of three and half years as incumbent Rahul Dravid's tenure will end with next month's T20 World Cup in the Americas.
The deadline to submit an application is on May 27, 2024, the board stated in a media release.
"The selection process will include a thorough review of applications, followed by personal interviews and assessments of shortlisted candidates," the release further stated.
The selected new coach will take charge of the team from July 1, immediately after the T20 World Cup in the Americas, and the term will expire on December 31, 2027.
The BCCI stipulated that the candidate, below 60 years age, should have played a minimum of 30 Tests or 50 ODIs and the applicant should have performed a similar role as a full member Test nation for a minimum of two years.
Recently, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said Dravid will have to reapply if he wishes to continue in the job post the T20 World Cup.

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming stated that their bowlers failing to take wickets was the reason they lost their IPL 2024 match against the Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.
"It's a good win for the home team they played really well. It was a tough game. We certainly struggled to get any momentum throughout the game, both with the batting innings. We do well to get to late 170s with some good hitting," he said in the post-match interview.
"And then we just said no penetration with the ball. And to win that match, we would have had to have done similar to what they did, which is take wickets throughout. But the opening stand was a match winning one. And we couldn't create pressure because they got used to the pace of the pitch and if we got wickets throughout, I think we would have been able to place a bit more pressure on the order," Fleming added.
Matt Henry, who played his first game for LSG, felt that the key&nbsp; thing for their side on the night was the 'ability to take wickets.'
"So obviously it was a little bit on the slow side. So I think that the way that the guys adapted to the surface, we did a really good job. And I think the key thing for us was ability to take wickets. And I thought KP [Krunal Pandya] and the spinners and, even the boys up top to be able to continue to take wickets and keep bowling to fresh batsmen made a massive difference for us,' he stated.
The Super Giants beat the Super Kings by 8 wickets in a tightly contested match that was ultimately determined by the opening partnership of Lucknow Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul scoring 136 between them.
Lucknow reached 180/2 in 19 overs after CSK scored 176/6 in the first innings.
Chennai remain third whilst Lucknow move up to fifth and join a cluster of four teams all on eight points.

MS Dhoni's decision to resign as CSK captain came as a surprise to many but Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming already knew MSD's plan on CSK captaincy.
In the post-match press conference, Fleming revealed that he had a chat with MS Dhoni about CSK captaincy last season. However, the timing of stepping down from CSK captaincy was left to Dhoni.
