British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak&rsquo;s official spokesperson admitted that the mass strike action will prove &ldquo;very difficult&rdquo; for the public.
Teachers in England and Wales who are members of the National Education Union (NEU) are staging walkouts, affecting an estimated 23,000 schools. Estimates suggest around 85 per cent of schools in the regions will be fully or partially closed, impacting working parents over childcare.
UK Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has insisted that &ldquo;inflation-busting&rdquo; pay rises are impossible even as talks remain ongoing.
&ldquo;I am disappointed that it has come to this, that the unions have made this decision. It is not a last resort. We are still in discussions,&rdquo; the minister said.

Train drivers from the RMT and Aslef workers&rsquo; unions are staging a strike in their long-running dispute over pay and conditions, including bus drivers in London. Around 100,000 civil servants employed in 124 government departments and other public sector bodies are also on strike in a dispute over better pay and working conditions.
Workers&rsquo; unions have argued with employers for higher pay rises to combat record high inflation and real-term cuts in income over the past decade.
But ministers continue to insist increasing wages to higher levels would only fuel the cost-of-living crisis and hamper the Sunak-led government&rsquo;s top priority of cutting down soaring inflation over the coming weeks and months.
Further health sector strikes are planned next week, when nurses and ambulance workers take another round of strike action from February 6 over better wages and working conditions.

The UK rail staff disrupted the New Year return to work on Tuesday in the latest strike action by workers in a range of sectors including NHS nurse strikes last year.
Workers across the economy are at loggerheads with the government as they demand big pay rises to cope with decades-high inflation, currently running at nearly 11 percent.
Normally bustling London train stations went quiet on the first normal working day of 2023 after the New Year break.
Network Rail, which operates the UK's rail infrastructure, warned travellers of "significantly reduced" train services or no services at all in some areas until Sunday.
Five days of strike action beginning on Tuesday were to include two 48-hour strikes by around 40,000 members of the RMT union.
The Aslef union will also strike on Thursday.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper urged the rail unions to return to the negotiating table.&nbsp;
The RMT union, however, accused the government of intervening in negotiations in December to stop a deal. Harper denies the claim.
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch said the minister had scuppered a potential settlement by insisting on the removal of guards from trains, in favour of driver-only operated trains.

The issue is a key one for unions.
"So that prevented any move forward on the issue and so that is the direct responsibility of the Secretary of State (Harper)," Lynch said from a picket line at London Euston railway station.
Despite escalating pay demands, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has pledged to fight calls for inflation-busting rises, insisting the government must stick to more modest increases for public sector workers.
"The best way to help them and help everyone else in the country is for us to get a grip and reduce inflation as quickly as possible," Prime Minister Rish Sunak told a watchdog panel of MPs late last year.
Lynch told AFP news agency the union was "really sorry that we have had to take this action, that it does impact them (the public) and we understand their frustration, indeed their anger.
"But we believe some of that should be directed at the government."
Those striking in 2022 included rail, port, border force and postal workers along with lawyers, nurses and ambulance staff.
More stoppages are planned in the coming weeks.

Staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland -- but not Scotland -- will walk out on December 15 and 20, after the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) union said the government had turned down an offer of negotiations.
It will be the latest industrial action in Britain, where decades-high inflation and a cost-of-living crisis has prompted staff in various sectors to demand pay rises to keep up with spiralling prices.
The nurses' strike will be sandwiched between the first of a series of two-day walkouts by national railway workers, while postal service employees will stage fresh stoppages in the run-up to Christmas.

The union, which wants a pay rise significantly above inflation, announced earlier this month that a ballot of its more than 300,000 members had found a majority in favour of strikes.
"Ministers have had more than two weeks since we confirmed that our members felt such injustice that they would strike for the first time," Cullen said, adding that an offer of formal negotiations was declined.
"They have the power and the means to stop this by opening serious talks that address our dispute."
The RCN will next week announce which particular arms of Britain's sprawling state-funded National Health Service (NHS) will be affected by the walkouts.

Local media reported that a petrol bomb was hurled at a vehicle which was carrying newspapers for distribution at Narayanpara in Kannur in the morning.
In Alappuzha, KSRTC buses, a tanker lorry and some other vehicles got damaged in the stone pelting allegedly by those supporting the hartal call.
Meanwhile, Kerala police beefed up security in the state and issued directions to the district police chiefs to ensure law and order after the PFI called for a day-long state-wide hartal.
Multi-agency teams spearheaded by the NIA had arrested 106 functionaries of the PFI on Thursday in near simultaneous raids at 93 locations in 15 states for allegedly supporting terror activities in the country.
Kerala, where PFI has some strong pockets, accounted for the maximum number of 22 arrests, officials said.

Thousands of truck drivers in South Korea have entered their seventh day against soaring fuel prices and demanding minimum pay guarantees.&nbsp;
The protest has hit the country&rsquo;s major industries, delaying car and steel production, and the shipment of raw materials for chips.&nbsp;
In the face of skyrocketing fuel prices, the drivers are demanding that minimum wage guarantees introduced two years ago during the pandemic be extended beyond a December 31 expiration. They are also demanding work rules that prevent overwork and extended hours that they say lead to unsafe driving.&nbsp;

While most unions said they will be on one-day strike, the Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, which has members who drive for cab aggregators, said it will go an "indefinite" strike from Monday.
The unions have refused to call of their strike despite an announcement by the Delhi government to form a committee to consider fare revision in a time-bound manner.
"We have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Monday in view of no action by the government to help us by slashing prices of fuels and revising fares," President, Sarvodaya Driver Association Delhi, Kamaljeet Gill, said.
General secretary of the Delhi Auto Rickshaw Sangh, Rajendra Soni, said the "unprecedented" hike in rates of CNG has taken a toll auto and cab drivers.
"We know that the Delhi government is forming some committee but we need solutions to our problems which is not in sight. We are demanding that the government (Centre and Delhi) provide Rs 35 per kg subsidy on CNG prices," he said.
Hundreds of auto, taxi and cab drivers staged a protest at the Delhi Secretariat recently demanding subsidy on CNG prices.
"We cannot keep plying our autos and cabs bearing losses everyday as the CNG prices are galloping. This is a symbolic protest to oppose the price hike," Soni said.
There are over 90,000 autos and more than 80,000 registered taxis complementing the public transport system in the city.
General secretary of STA Operators Ekta Manch, Shyamlal Gola, said that RTV buses, numbering around 10,000, will also be off road in support of the demands to revise fares and bring down CNG prices.
The feeder buses play a crucial role in last mile connectivity running from Metro stations to interior localities in the city. PTI
