The Indian football team will begin the post-Sunil Chhetri era with a do-or-die clash against Qatar on Tuesday. The Blue Tigers need to either match or better the result of Afghanistan, who face Kuwait in the other Group A clash.

The influential Sunil Chhetri's absence will be a difficult void to fill as the Indian football team enters a testing transition phase with a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying match against heavyweights Qatar here on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old Chhetri called time on his glorious international career by playing in last week's fixture against Kuwait in Kolkata, which ended in a goal-less draw as the team failed to give him a fitting farewell.
Chhetri ended with 94 goals in 151 matches, having led the country with aplomb for more than a decade.
The Indian team will be led by the 32-year-old first-choice goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who has so far appeared in 72 internationals and is the most experienced player in the 23-member squad after Chhetri's retirement.
An acid test awaits India as they run into two-time Asian champions Qatar at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, knowing well that a defeat will end their campaign and dash all hopes of securing a maiden entry into the third round of the World Cup Qualifiers.
India remain in the second spot with five points and a goal difference of -3. Afghanistan, who also played out a 0-0 draw with Qatar in their last outing in Hofuf, Saudi Arabia, are in third spot with a goal difference of -10, the stalemate making the job much more difficult for Igor Stimac's wards.
Qatar, who have already qualified for the third round as group-toppers, have named a largely youthful squad, with 21 out of their 29 players below the age of 24.
"We have watched the Afghanistan versus Qatar game and will work on the attacking transition, with a hope to start scoring goals from the chances we create," said Stimac.
"I&rsquo;ve told them that the only thing they need to do is enjoy the game, be proud of their country, and take the opportunities.It&rsquo;s all about the 90 minutes for us tomorrow, and we are prepared to die on the pitch, if required.
India had their first practice in Doha on Sunday evening and are having the official training session on Monday at the match venue.
For the Blue Tigers, a result is a must. If they lose against Qatar, they will be eliminated from the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers third round.
They will then be doing battle in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers third round matches for a place at the 2027 tournament in Saudi Arabia.
However, if India beat Qatar, they will be in pole position to make the World Cup Qualifiers third round and a direct spot at the Asian Cup thanks to their much-superior goal difference over Afghanistan.
If India draw against Qatar, they will qualify for the third round only if the match between Kuwait and Afghanistan, which will kick off in Kuwait City two hours after India's match, also ends in a draw.
In that scenario, India will finish second in the group with six points, the same as Afghanistan, but with a better goal difference.
Kuwait are at the bottom of the table with four points but with Qatar already through to the third round, all the other three teams remain in contention for the second and final berth from Group A.
For over a decade, one question that has dogged Indian football is, "Who, after Sunil Chhetri?" The team is yet to find a lethal striker to succeed him.
Rahim Ali struggled as a substitute in the previous match and lacked clinical finishing skills. The likes of Manvir Singh, Vikram Partap Singh and David Lalhlansanga comprise India's forward line but they are yet to make a statement upfront.
"We are not thinking about it (Chhetri&rsquo;s absence). We've played several games over the last five years without him, and we have shown that we can play in a composed manner. We&rsquo;ve got other leaders in the side, who now need to step up," Stimac said.
The fancied Qatar side will look to exploit wherever the India team is found wanting, making it extremely important for defenders Anwar Ali, Mehtab Singh, Nikhil Poojary and Rahul Bheke to be on their toes at all times.
In the midfield, the likes of Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa, Brandon Fernandes, Liston Colaco and Lallianzuala Chhangte will need to be creative with their passing and intelligent with movement off the ball.

Chhetri had announced on Friday that he will retire from international football after next month's World Cup qualifier against Kuwait. This decision marks the end of an illustrious 19-year career, during which Chhetri has established himself as India's top goal-scorer with 94 goals and the most-capped player in the country's history.
The 39-year-old explained, &ldquo;The retirement decision was not because of physical aspect, I am still fit, running, chasing, defending, the hard work is not difficult, the reason is to do with the mental aspect,&rdquo; he said during a virtual interaction. Commenting on Chhetri's video post on Instagram, Kohli wrote for his good friend: "My brother. Proud."
Yuvraj called him a legend, saying the legacy of the 39-year-old veteran of 150 national appearances will remain for a very long time.
"A real legend of the game who took Indian football onto the global stage. Your passion has inspired a generation to take up the game... your legacy in Indian sports will be remembered forever...you can look back with pride as you get set for your final game, thank you legend," wrote Yuvraj in an Instagram story.
Chhetri, who made his international debut in 2005, has scored 94 goals for the country. He will leave the scene as India's all-time top scorer and most-capped player.
Legendary India forward Bhutia, who Chhetri succeeded as captain, told PTI that it was a great loss for Indian football.
"Sunil, no doubt, will go down as one of the greatest players India had ever produced. His contribution to Indian football is immense. It's a great loss for Indian football," said Bhutia, the former India captain.
"I am fortunate to have played with him as a senior player. When I came in (I M) Vijayan was senior to me, after that Sunil (Chhetri) came. I am fortunate to have served Indian football in between two stalwarts of Indian football," added Bhutia.
Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, member of the India squad for the T20 World Cup, wished Chhetri a "happy retirement".
"What a run you have had! Congratulations on an amazing career," wrote Chahal on 'X', while Chhetri's Bengaluru FC and India team-mate, goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, wished he could change his compatriot's mind.
"Never wanted to see this happen, I wish I could do something to change your mind but I also understand why it is happening bhai. The whole country needs to celebrate your international career on the 6th of June the way you deserve. My Captain," Sandhu wrote on 'X'.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) said Chhetri will continue to motivate the coming generations.
"Your legacy on and off-the-field will always be remembered! You have always been and will continue to inspire us. Thank you."
BCCI termed Chhetri a "phenomenal icon", saying his "career has been nothing short of extraordinary and you have been a phenomenal icon for Indian football and Indian sports,"
while India spinner Kuldeep Yadav congratulated the legend on a "fantastic career".
IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru saluted the No. 11 jersey, saying, "What a ride this has been, skipper! 94 international goals, so many laurels, an unbroken conviction and you've inspired so many young Indians to dream big. Happy farewell to the No.11 (No.9) but India's 1," wrote RCB on 'X'.

Chhetri, 39, first donned the senior national jersey on June 12, 2005, in a friendly match against Pakistan in Quetta.
He was India's scorer in the 1-1 draw. Since then, he has made 149 appearances for the national team, netting a record 93 goals.
A prolific goal-getter, Chhetri holds the unique record of scoring at least one goal in his first, 25th, 50th, 75th, 100th and 125th match for the Blue Tigers.
However, the match didn't end the way he would liked it to as two second-half goals by Afghanistan meant that they beat India 2-1.
Rahmat Akbari scored the equaliser and Sharif Mukhammad capitalised on a mistake from Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to clinch the victory for Afghanistan.
The loss left Chhetri in tears as both goals were conceded when he was off the field. India has now lost 5 and won none in their last 6 matches. They hadn't scored a single goal before this game in the last 5 matches.

Throughout the match, India made numerous attempts to breach the resilient Bangladeshi defence. However, they faced difficulty in finding the net, leading to a goalless first half. Even in the second half, chances seemed to slip away, with a Samuel Kynshi free-kick hitting the crossbar, keeping the score level.
It was in the 84th minute that left winger Bryce Miranda received a long pass near the opposition box. A foul by Bangladesh captain Rahmat Mia resulted in India being awarded a crucial penalty.
Stepping up to the challenge, Captain Sunil Chhetri confidently placed the ball into the bottom-left corner, granting India a late 1-0 advantage. The Indian side, under Igor Stimac's guidance, held firm to their lead, securing a significant win that keeps them firmly in the running for the knockout stage.

Veteran striker Sunil Chhetri was the only notable face in the 18-member Indian squad for the Hangzhou Asian Games as All India Football Federation (AIFF) finally managed to stich a second-rung team, but there is still a big question mark on head coach Igor Stimac accompanying the team.
Most of the clubs had shown unwillingness to release the 22 players named in the Indian squad as the Asian Games' football competition schedule clashes with the ISL, which starts on September 21.
This could be seen as a massive loss of face for AIFF president and BJP leader Kalyan Chaubey, who had actually made hectic parleys with the ministry to send the team despite not meeting the government criteria to compete in the quadrennial extravaganza.
After prolonged parleys, the AIFF was able to announce an under-strength team made up of nine players from the original 22, including Chhetri, while the remaining were made up of inexperienced players from the clubs.
But there are doubts whether Stimac will travel to Hangzhou at the helm of such an under-strength team. He had earlier said that the Asian Games was a priority.
Initially, the AIFF said through a press release that the team will comprise 17 players but later added Mohun Bagan's Deepak Tangri in the squad. It could be a rare instance of India sending an under-strength football team in a major competition. The only saving grace was the inclusion of the current Indian football poster boy Chhetri, who recently became a father.
The two other senior footballers, defender Sandesh Jhingan of FC Goa and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu of Bengaluru FC -- were not released by their clubs.
Azfar Noorani of Mumbai Kenkre FC, which played in the 2022-23 I-League but were relegated to second division, was also named in the team. The national federation, which was able to stitch together the team just three days before its departure for China, still thanked the Indian Super League clubs and the FSDL "for coordinating with it for the release of players".
The Indian team is scheduled to begin its Asian Games campaign with a match against China on September 19, followed by games against Bangladesh (September 21) and Myanmar (September 24).
The top two teams from the six groups will make it to the pre-quarterfinals, with four best-ranked third-placed sides also qualifying.
The football team did not meet the qualifying criteria to be part of the Asian Games contingent but got clearance from the sports ministry on the prospect of the best side being picked, with Chhetri, Jhingan and number one goalkeeper Gurpreet in the squad.
But the ISL clubs had other plans as they refused to release their players as doing so would mean missing three to four matches. They are, however, not bound to release the players as the Asian Games did not fall in the FIFA international match window. A hapless AIFF was even hoping that the ISL clubs would release any 22 players from the registered 50 for the Asian Games to allow the senior men's team to participate in the continental showpiece.
The under-strength team has just two goalkeepers, instead of three in a normal 22-member squad, and it could be problematic if there are injuries during the tournament.
The team will also have to pick 10 outfield players from 16 and any further injury can lead to limiting the number of substitutions and most of the players will have to be on the field for long time.
Bengaluru FC, which had six players in the original 22, refused to release Gurpreet but agreed to Chhetri and Rohit Danu to be with the national team. In the absence of Gurpeet, the Indian goal will be manned by either Gurmeet Singh or Dheeraj Singh Moirangthem.
FC Goa also refused to let go of Jhingan while East Bengal, which had two players in the earlier squad, did not have any in the final team. Mohun Bagan have two players in Sumit Rathi and Tangri while Gurkirat Singh is the lone player from Mumbai City FC.
Many of final team players have not played too many matches for their respective ISL clubs and have not been regular first XI players.

Under the guidance of national senior team head coach Igor Stimac, the Indian squad will showcase its talent in Hangzhou, China, the host city for the Games.
The participation of the Indian men's and women's football teams in the Hangzhou Games was initially uncertain due to the sports ministry's criteria of sending only top-8 ranked teams in the continent. However, after an appeal from the All India Football Federation (AIFF), both the men's and women's teams were granted approval to compete.
India's men's football team will be in Group A, alongside hosts China, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. The Asian Games' football competition follows an Under-23 format, but due to the event's one-year delay, players born up to January 1, 1999, who are 24 years old, have been allowed to participate.
This marks India's return to the Asian Games after missing the 2018 edition in Jakarta, making it the first time in nine years for the two-time Asian Games champions to participate in the continental event.

Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri has signed a one-year extension with Bengaluru FC on Monday. The one-year deal includes an option for an additional year, securing Chhetri's future with the club.
As the world's third-highest goal-scorer among active players, Chhetri proudly revealed his commitment to Bengaluru FC by unveiling a banner at the Kanteerava Stadium following India's triumph over Lebanon in the SAFF Championship semifinal on Saturday. With this extension, Chhetri will continue his journey with the club, with whom he has already won seven trophies.
"I have signed a Bengaluru FC contract a fair few times, and what I can tell you is that it always feels special, even when it probably should not, given it is a formality. I am so happy that I will be spending two more years here," expressed Chhetri after putting pen to paper.
Chhetri acknowledged the significant role played by the fans in influencing his decision. Despite receiving generous offers from other prestigious clubs over the years, Chhetri couldn't fathom leaving Bengaluru FC due to the profound impact the fans have had on him.
As the club captain since its inception in 2013, Chhetri holds the distinction of being the longest-serving player for the Blues, having been an integral part of the team for ten seasons. During this remarkable tenure, he has contributed to the club's success, securing titles such as the I-League (2014, 2016), the Federation Cup (2015, 2017), the Super Cup (2018), Indian Super League (2019), and most recently, the Durand Cup (2022).
"The strong bond between this city, the club, and all the people associated with it is truly exceptional. As a footballer, experiencing this level of connection is rare and special. I feel fortunate, grateful, and happy, and I hope that everyone associated with this family feels the same way about this extension," Chhetri added.
Chhetri has amassed over 250 appearances for Bengaluru FC across various competitions, showcasing his exceptional talent by scoring an impressive 116 goals in the process. He has also claimed the title of the club's top-scorer on seven occasions.
Parth Jindal, the owner of Bengaluru FC, expressed his delight and honored the club's bond with Chhetri, stating, "It is an absolute honor and privilege for us at Bengaluru FC that Sunil Chhetri has chosen to extend his stay with the club. He has been the face of this football club and continues to be its flag bearer. India skipper and mercurial striker Sunil Chhetri played down the talks about his retirement saying he has not put any timeline for himself to bid adieu to the game.
Chhetri is 38 but still continues to be the spearhead of the Indian attack, evidenced by the five goals he netted in the ongoing SAFF Championship from three matches.
"I don't know when my last game for the country is going to be. It derives from the fact that I have never had long-term targets, I think about next match, next 10 days. It (retirement) may come at a day when probably I don't want to, as there are a lot of things, and I will be done. Till that time, I never think about it," Chhetri said on the eve of India's semifinal against Lebanon.
Chhetri, the second-highest goal-scorer from Asia with 92 goals, said he has set some parameters for himself to determine about hanging his boots.

Captain Sunil Chhetri rose to the occasion with his 87th international goal as India won the Intercontinental Cup with a 2-0 victory over Lebanon in the final in Kalinga on Sunday.
Lallianzuala Chhangte struck the evening's other goal to cap an impressive display.
This is India's second title triumph in the tournament, following their win in the inaugural edition in 2018. Korea won in 2019.
In the last leg of his career, the 38-year-old Chhetri found the back of the net in the 46th minute of the title clash, breaking the deadlock right after play resumed after a goalless first half.
Buoyed by the lead and backed by a near-capacity crowd at the Kalinga Stadium, India consolidated their position when Lallianzuala Chhangte, the provider of the first goal, found the target in the 66th minute, leaving the fans delighted and their 99-ranked opponents stunned.
In hot and humid conditions, both the teams had their fair share of chances in the first half but could not make use of them, just like the goalless stalemate they played out in an inconsequential match two days ago.
And while India had more possession of the ball -- nearly 58 percent -- the Lebanese had seven shots at goal as compared to three by the home team which again seemed to be lacking in ideas in the opponent's final third.
However, all that changed after the half-time break.
First a charging Chhangte surged into the box and cut it back for Chhetri, who calmly tapped the ball in past the Lebanese goalkeeper Ali Sabeh from close for the opener. The goal was a result of an excellent build-up as Nikhil Poojary managed to slip in the ball through little space to Chhangte who then laid it for his inspirational skipper.
Their tails up after the opener, the Indians looked to press home the advantage and they wre rewarded with a second goal through Chhangte.
Having received a ball from Chhetri, substitute Naorem Mahesh Singh attempted to put it past the Lebanese custodian, who saved it but could not keep the ball with him. Off the rebound, Chhangte converted to double India's lead.
Earlier, the Blue Tigers started on a positive note and were on the lookout for goals but could not convert the few chances that came their way.
On the sixth minute, Ashique Kuruniyan was brought down inside the Lebanese box and the home team instantly appealed for a penalty but the referee was not interested, leaving even India head coach Igor Stimac furious.
India found themselves in a spot when Lebanon tried to hit on the counter, but Ashique committed a foul, took a yellow card for the team's sake, and prevented the visitors from charging towards the India goal.
In hot and humid conditions, the teams needed two cooling breaks.&nbsp;

Before India's 0-3 loss to Vietnam, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Singapore.

The Indian football team suffered a 0-3 defeat by hosts Vietnam in the Hung Thinh Friendly Tournament on Tuesday.&nbsp;
The Blue Tigers, who were seeking redemption against Vietnam after their draw against Singapore earlier, failed to challenge the home side.
In their previous game, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Singapore (Rank 159), who are ranked 55 places lower than the Indian team in the 104th spot in FIFA rankings.
Vietnam opened the scoring with Phan Van Duc who slotted home in the 10th minute. The visitors came close on some occasions courtesy of forwards Ashique Kuruniyan and Sunil Chhetri but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net. The home team scored two goals in the second half to complete the rout.
Team India are without a win since their 4-0 victory against Hong Kong back in June and will be disappointed by their performance during the international break.
With Igor Stimac's job under scanner regarding the team's form, India need some results to go their way before the crucial AFC Asian Cup next year.
