Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, the Islamist leader who headed the offensive that forced Assad out, has begun talks on a transfer of power and vowed to pursue former senior government officials responsible for torture and war crimes.
His group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, is rooted in Syria's branch of Al-Qaeda and is proscribed by many Western governments as a terrorist organisation, though it has sought to moderate its rhetoric.
The fall of Assad, whose clan had zero tolerance for dissent and who maintained a complex web of prisons and detention centres to keep Syrians from straying from the Baath party line, sparked celebrations around the country and in the diaspora all over the world.
Syria's civil war killed 500,000 people and forced half the country to flee their homes, millions of them finding refuge abroad.
The country now faces profound uncertainty after the collapse of a government that had run every aspect of daily life in the image of Assad and his father, from whom the ousted president inherited power.

With Syria in flux and in the absence of a government authority just two days after Assad's escape, AFP journalists in Damascus were unable to obtain comment from the Syrian side on the Israeli strikes.
Israel, which borders Syria, also sent troops into a buffer zone east of the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights after Assad's fall, in what Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described as a "limited and temporary step" for "security reasons".
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday that the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel for almost 60 years, would perpetually remain part of Israel.
Israel backer the United States said the incursion must be "temporary", after the United Nations said Israel was violating a 1974 deal.

Lebanon's Hezbollah, which had helped prop up Assad, condemned the strikes late Monday and lambasted Israel for "occupying more land in the Golan Heights".
Hezbollah backer and Israel's arch-foe Iran also condemned the Israeli military's incursion into the buffer zone, calling it a "violation" of law.
After Assad for years deployed all the means at his government's disposal to put down the revolt, including air strikes and even chemical attacks on rebel bastions, it was ultimately a lightning offensive launched on November 27 that took him down.
The rebels started their renewed campaign in northern Syria on the very same day a ceasefire took effect in the Israel-Hezbollah war, which killed thousands in Lebanon.
The war saw Israel inflict staggering losses on Hezbollah, which had for years fought in support of Assad's government in Syria, long a conduit of weapons for the militant group from Iran.

The ouster of Assad has sparked a frantic search by families of the tens of thousands of people held in the country's network of jails and detention centres.

Deputy US Ambassador Robert Wood called it "a very fluid situation."

"As many folks said in the consultations... the situation is extremely fluid and is likely to change day to day for the time being," Woods said.
However, Woods noted that "just about everyone spoke about the need for Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence to be respected, and concern about the humanitarian situation," indicating the council is working on a joint statement.
"The intention is for the council to speak with one voice on the situation in Syria," he said.
When asked about the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, which led the rebel coalition which toppled Assad, and whether it would be removed from the UN sanctions list, both Nebenzia and Wood said the council has not yet broached the topic.
Since the Syrian civil war first broke out in 2011, the UNSC has largely been paralyzed in its response, with Russia consistently using its veto power to protect Assad's government.

An Israeli airstrike that demolished Iran's consulate in Syria killed two Iranian generals and five officers, according to Iranian officials. The strike appeared to signify an escalation of Israel's targeting of military officials from Iran, which supports militant groups fighting Israel in Gaza, and along its border with Lebanon.
Since the war in Gaza began nearly six months ago, clashes have increased between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah militants based in Lebanon. Hamas, which rules Gaza and attacked Israel on Oct. 7, is also backed by Iran.

Iran's ambassador, Hossein Akbari, vowed revenge for the strike &ldquo;at the same magnitude and harshness.&rdquo; Hamas and Islamic Jihad &mdash; another Palestinian militant group backed by Iran &mdash; accused Israel of seeking to widen the conflict in Gaza.
Experts said there was no doubt that Iran would retaliate. The strike in Syria was a &ldquo;major escalation,&rdquo; Charles Lister, a Syria expert at the Middle East Institute in Washington, said on the social media platform X.
A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, Nasser Kanaani, called on other countries to condemn the strike.

The Syrian Golan is a region in southwest Syria that was occupied by Israeli forces on June 5, 1967.
The 193-member UN General Assembly voted on the draft resolution &lsquo;The Syrian Golan&rsquo; under agenda item &lsquo;The situation in the Middle East&rsquo; on Tuesday. The resolution, introduced by Egypt, was adopted by a recorded vote with 91 in favour, eight against and 62 abstentions.
Apart from India, those voting in favour of the resolution included Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates. Australia, Canada, Israel, the UK and the US voted against it. The resolution said it is deeply concerned that Israel has not withdrawn from the Syrian Golan, which has been under occupation since 1967, contrary to the relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.
The resolution declared that Israel failed to comply with Security Council resolution 497 (1981), which decided that &ldquo;the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect.&rdquo; Tuesday's resolution also declared the Israeli decision of December 14, 1981, null and void and said it had no validity whatsoever. It called upon Israel to rescind its decision.
The resolution also stressed the illegality of the Israeli settlement construction and other activities in the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967.
It demanded Israel's withdrawal from all the occupied Syrian Golan to the line of June 4, 1967, in implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions, and determined &ldquo;that the continued occupation of the Syrian Golan and its de facto annexation constitute a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region.&rdquo; The resolution expressed grave concern over the halt in the peace process on the Syrian track and expressed hope that peace talks will soon resume from the point they had reached.&nbsp;

They would be the first Israeli strikes on Syria since the militant Palestinian group Hamas carried out its deadly attacks in southern Israel.
The airstrikes came a day before Iran's foreign minister was scheduled to visit Syria to meet officials over the volatile situation in the region.
Israel has targeted airports and sea ports in the government-held parts of Syria in an apparent attempt to prevent arms shipments from Iran to militant groups backed by Tehran, including Lebanon's Hezbollah. Thousands of Iran-backed fighters from around the region joined Syria's 12-year conflict helping tip the balance in favour of President Bashar Assad's forces.

Syria's health minister has raised the casualty tolls from a drone attack on Thursday that hit a packed military graduation ceremony in the central city of Homs to 80 killed and 240 wounded. It was one of the deadliest attacks on the Syrian army in recent years, with the country's conflict now in its thirteenth year.
Health Minister Hassan al-Ghabash said that civilians, including six children, and military personnel were among those killed. There were concerns the death toll could rise further as many of the wounded were in serious condition.
In an earlier statement, Syria's military said that drones laden with explosives targeted the ceremony packed with young officers and their families as it was wrapping up in Homs. It accused insurgents &ldquo;backed by known international forces&rdquo; of the attack, without naming any particular group.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres &ldquo;expressed deep concern&rdquo; at the drone attack in Homs as well as &ldquo;reports of retaliatory shelling&rdquo; in northwest Syria, his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.
The military has not provided any casualty numbers but Syria's state television said the government announced a three-day state of mourning, starting on Friday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, and the pro-government Sham FM radio station earlier reported the strikes.
The military accused insurgents &ldquo;backed by known international forces&rdquo; of the attack, without naming any particular group, and said that women and children were among those critically wounded.
The Syrian military said &ldquo;it will respond with full force and decisiveness to these terrorist organisations, wherever they exist&rdquo;.
Syria's crisis started with peaceful protests against President Bashar Assad's government in March 2011 but quickly morphed into a full-blown civil war following the government's brutal crackdown on the protesters.
The tide turned in Assad's favour against rebel groups in 2015, when Russia provided key military backing to Syria, as well as Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
So far, the war has killed half a million people, wounded hundreds of thousands and left many parts of the country destroyed. It has displaced half of Syria's prewar population of 23 million, including more than 5 million who are refugees outside Syria.
While most Arab governments have restored ties with the government Damascus, Syria remains divided, with a northwest enclave under the control of al-Qaida-linked militants from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group and Turkish-backed opposition fighters. The country's northeast is under the control of US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
Following the drone attack, the Syrian government forces shelled villages in Idlib province, in the rebel-held northwest. There were no immediate reports of casualties there.
The Syrian army shelled another village in the region earlier on Thursday, killing at least five civilians, activists and emergency workers said. The shelling hit a family house on the outskirts of the village of Kafr Nouran in western Aleppo province, according to opposition-held northwestern Syria's civil defence organisation known as the White Helmets.
The dead were an older woman and four of her children, according to the Observatory. Nine other members of the family were wounded, it said.
Northwestern Syria is mostly held by al-Qaida-linked fighters as well as Turkish-backed opposition forces. The vast majority of around 4.1 million people residing in the enclave live in poverty, relying on humanitarian aid to survive. Many of them are Syrians, internally displaced by the war from other parts of the country.
Meanwhile, local authorities in northeastern Syria, which is under US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces said Turkish drone attacks struck in Hassakeh and Qamishli provinces on Thursday, hitting oil production facilities, electrical substations and a dam.
A statement from the local Kurdish authorities said six members of their security forces and two civilians were killed.
Turkiye didn't immediately comment on the strikes but Ankara says the main Syrian Kurdish militia is allied with Turkiye's outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has led an insurgency against Turkiye since 1984 that has killed tens of thousands of people. Ankara has declared the PKK a terrorist group.
Syrian Kurdish forces were a major US ally in the war against the militant Islamic State group, which was defeated in Syria in March 2019.

Turkey-backed opposition fighters in Syria fatally shot at least three ethnic Kurds who were celebrating a holiday late Monday by lighting fires, Syrian opposition activists and pro-government media said.
The shooting near the northwestern town of Jinderis, which suffered substantial damage during last month&rsquo;s earthquake, underlined the high tensions between Turkey-backed opposition fighters and the Kurdish community in Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the shooting was carried out by members of the Ahrar Sharqiya group, an armed opposition group backed by Turkey.
The observatory said members of the group got into an argument with some Kurds after mocking them for lighting a fire in honor of the Kurdish new year celebration. Members of the Ahrar Sharqiya group shot and killed three Kurds and wounded four others, the observatory said. It said all those killed were from the same family.
The pro-government Sham FM radio station said four Kurds were killed in the shooting.
&nbsp; In the hours after the shooting, Kurds from Jinderis took to the streets. Some traveled in a convoy to the town of Atmeh, about nine miles away, where protesters called on the al-Qaida-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham to seize control of Jinderis from the Turkish-backed militias.
Roshin Othman, whose 50-year-old brother was among those killed and who joined the protesters, said that first a group of men began throwing stones at the Kurds who had set the fire and then &ldquo;went to their office and got weapons and began spraying bullets on everyone.&rdquo;
&ldquo;For the past five years our life is not a life,&rdquo; she said, referring to the time since Turkish-backed groups took control of Jinderis, &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had enough of injustice.&rdquo;
Clashes between Turkey-backed opposition gunmen and Kurdish fighters have left scores of people dead on both sides in Syria.
Since 2016, Turkey has launched three major operations inside Syria, targeting Syria&rsquo;s main Kurdish militia &mdash; the People&rsquo;s Protection Units or YPG &mdash; which Turkey considers a terrorist organization and an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers&rsquo; Party, or PKK. The PKK has for decades waged an insurgency within Turkey against the government in Ankara.
The YPG, however, forms the backbone of U.S.-led forces in the fight against Islamic State militants and has been a proven top U.S. ally in Syria.
Jinderis was controlled by Kurdish fighters until 2018 when it was taken by Turkey-backed opposition fighters who still hold it. The capture of the town displaced many Kurds.

Amreli district in Gujarat has been the epicentre of an 'earthquake swarm', which refers to a sequence of mostly small tremors which can continue for days, weeks, and even months. Between 23 and 25 February, some areas in Amreli recorded 4 quakes with magnitudes ranging from 3.1 to 3.4.
Residents of the Mitiyala village in the district have started sleeping outside their houses due to the frequent temblors, as per news agency PTI.

Asked about the recent seismic activity in Amreli, Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research's (ISR) officiating Director General Sumer Chopra told PTI that this is an "earthquake swarm" event in which small tremors keep on recurring. This is mostly seasonal.

"In the last two years and two months, we recorded 400 mild tremors in Amreli, out of which 86 per cent were below the intensity of 2, while 13 per cent were between the intensity of 2 and 3 and only in five events, it went above 3 magnitude,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Most of these mild tremors are not even felt by the people. Just our machine records them,&rdquo; he said.
With a caveat that &ldquo;earthquakes cannot be predicted&rdquo;, Chopra said the possibility of a major earthquake is low when the 'earthquake swarm' is taking place.

Over a week after the earthquake battered Syria and Turkey, the opposition-held town of Jindires in northwest Syria struggles as international aid has yet to come in.
Aid agencies and governments stepped up a scramble to send help to parts of Turkey and Syria devastated by an earthquake, but a week after the disaster many complained they still were struggling to meet basic needs, like finding shelter from the bitter cold.
The situation was particularly desperate in Syria, where a 12-year civil war has complicated relief efforts and meant days of wrangling over how to even move aid into the country, let alone distribute it.
Some people who lost their homes said they have received nothing. Mahmoud Haffar, head of the local council in Jinderis, says that locals have been able to scrounge up about 2,500 tents so far, but some 1,500 families still remain without shelter &mdash; as nighttime temperatures fall to around minus 4 degrees Celsius (26 degrees Fahrenheit).
All of the aid has come from local partners says Haffar - none of it from the United Nations.
The United Nations announced a deal with Damascus to deliver U.N. aid through two more border crossings from Turkey to rebel-held areas of northwest Syria &mdash; but the needs remain enormous.
Ibrahim Ibrahim is sifting through the rubble to recover any important documents he could find. He is living in one room with 35 others on the outskirts of town.
But with little heating and proper shelter, people are struggling with the cold temperatures sleeping on the streets or even cramming into a room.
&ldquo;We desperately need tents. We can stand the cold, no problem, we can sleep anywhere no problem but these women, children and injured who we took out from under the rubble who might be bruised etc. I just dropped my kids off (at) the hospital, their whole body is all blue," he says.
Until now, the U.N. has only been allowed to deliver aid to the area through a single border crossing with Turkey, or via government territory, which presents its own logistical and political challenges. The United Nations said Monday that President Bashar Assad of Syria had agreed to open two new crossing points from Turkey to his country&rsquo;s rebel-held northwest.
The crossings at Bab al-Salameh and Al Ra&eacute;e are to be opened for an initial period of three months.
In Syria, the toll in the northwestern rebel-held region has passed 2,200, according to the rescue group known as the White Helmets.
Over 1,400 people have died in government-held areas, according to the Syrian Health Ministry.
The toll is nearly certain to rise as search teams turn up more bodies &mdash; and the window for finding survivors was closing.
In the town of Afrin, 190 families have been housed on the floor of a basketball court.
Families slept on the floor using mattresses used for training and donated by locals.
The families separated from one another using blankets, hanging on columns or sports bars.
Sabah el Khodr says she and her two toddlers have been sick for the last 9 days.
Local officials said the shelter is temporary until new tents are secured. &ldquo;All my kids are sick, come and see. It has been a week from the god forsaken day that happened to us they have been sick. I just came from the hospital. We also have a martyr (lost someone). Our situation is very bad," she said.
Others were lucky and managed to secure a spot in one of the 45 temporary camp encampments created by local NGOs.
Side by side with people living in their trucks and cars, Abdelmajid Al Shawi has been in this camp for the last three days waiting for the world to heed the Syrian people's call, but they have yet to come.
&ldquo;We want our voice to reach the whole world but where is the aid?" he said."

A video was shared on social which reportedly showed a British rescuer crawling down a tunnel created through rubble. After crawling through the debris, the rescuer finds a Turkish man trapped for almost a week.
The video was recorded in Turkey's Hatay, according to accounts on social media.
