Senior India off-spinner R Ashwin announces retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.

Off-spinner R Ashwin announced his retirement from all formats of cricket on Wednesday, December 18.

India's premier off-spinner R Ashwin on Wednesday surprised the cricketing world by announcing his retirement with immediate effect in the middle of the Test series against Australia here.
Ashwin retires from the game as the second highest wicket-taker for India in Tests with 537 scalps in 106 games, leaving him only behind Anil Kumble (619 wickets). He will continue to play club cricket.
"I won't take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an India cricketer," Ashwin said at the end of the drawn third Test here in a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma during which he declined to take any questions and left after making the announcement.

Ashwin's announcement came after the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ended in a draw.
The 38-year-old played the day-night Test in Adelaide and picked up one wicket.

Robin Singh&rsquo;s cricketing journey is unlike any other in Indian cricket&mdash;a story that began in Trinidad, where he played alongside West Indian cricketers like Phil Simmons, David Williams, and Richard Gabriel. Though born and raised in Trinidad, his move to India in 1984 for academic reasons changed everything.
His love for cricket took him on an unexpected path, marking the start of an incredible journey that would make him a key figure in Indian cricket.
His cricketing career in India truly kicked off with his debut for Tamil Nadu in the 1985-86 Ranji Trophy season. His contributions were instrumental as the team won their first Ranji title in 33 years, showcasing his ability to deliver when it mattered most.
And his international debut came in 1989, but after just two matches, he was dropped. Many players would have faded away, but not Robin. His hard work paid off, and in 1996, he made a triumphant return to the Indian squad. Next, over 136 ODIs, he racked up 2,336 runs and took 69 wickets, establishing himself as a dependable all-rounder for the team.
He retired in 2004 but that didn&rsquo;t mark the end of Robin&rsquo;s cricketing journey&mdash;it was, in fact, the start of an equally exciting chapter. As a coach, Robin Singh was a force to be reckoned with. According to reports, Dravid was asked to explain in a private meeting with BCCI secretary Jay Shah and other officials as to what were the factors that led to his side failing to win the final in front of a packed home crowd on November 19.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced on Wednesday that Team India will tour the Island nation for a six-match white-ball series in July-August after the T20 World Cup.

According to the 2024 calender released by SLC, India is supposed to travel for 3 ODI and as many T20Is during July-August, which is effectively country's cricket season.

The crisis-ridden Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and its host broadcaster will have something to cheer about during the middle of 2024 when the Indian team makes it annual ritual tour of the island nation for a short six-match white-ball series, the board announced on Wednesday.
SLC has been banned by the ICC for government interference and the global body has also shifted the U-19 World Cup to South Africa. However the national teams (men and women) will be allowed to fulfil their bilateral commitments.
According to the 2024 calender released by SLC, India is supposed to travel for 3 ODI and as many T20Is during July-August, which is effectively country's cricket season.
The men's national team is due to play 52 international games in 2024, which includes 10 Tests, 21 ODIs and 21 T20Is. The T20Is, however, doesn't factor in the additional games that they will play during the T20 World Cup.
One of the major assignment will be the three-Test away series in England, which is a part of the current World Test Championship. The other tough assignment will be the two-Test series against South Africa in November.

He went into beast mode and single-handedly carried his side over the finish line with an unbeaten 48-ball-104.

Ruturaj Gaikwad displayed brute power and wonderful technique in equal measure with a maiden hundred that propelled India to a commanding 222 for 3 against Australia in the third T20 International here on Tuesday.
Gaikwad slammed a career-best 123 not out off just 57 balls with 13 fours and seven sixes, a first ton by an Indian batter against Australia in T20 Internationals.
The 30 runs that Gaikwad took off Glenn Maxwell in the 20th over could prove to be a game-changer. Skipper Matthew Wade's decision to give a part-time off-spinner 20th over of the innings backfired big-time.
On a wicket that had some extra bounce and swing, India had a shaky start losing their both their in-form batters Yashasvi Jaiswal (6) and Ishan Kishan (0) cheaply after Matthew Wade opted to bowl to make use of the dewy conditions.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav (39; 29b) looked set for a big knock with two sixes and five boundaries before debutant pacer Aaron Hardie dismissed him with a short ball just after the halfway mark.
With run-rate not an issue -- eight per over -- they needed someone to anchor their innings, and the Indian vice-captain Gaikwad played the role to perfection.
From 13 off 15 balls, the right-hander with orthodox technique, who often drew flak for his slow starts, switched gears after Surya's dismissal, displaying the wide array of shots in his repertoire.
His knock was not just about classical drives in the V but also a testament to his brute power. He packed a lot of punch in his pulls and an inside-out maximums. It was a different Gaikwad on display during last six overs.
Once he got his furst 50 off 32 balls, he then went berserk, taking another 20 to bring up his maiden triple digit score in the last over of Maxwell.

According to reports, the fixture has been shifted to the Chinnaswamy Stadium as the police department are under "immense pressure" to provide security to the visiting teams due to the upcoming elections in the state.
As per a Hyderabad Cricket Association official, &ldquo;The police department didn&rsquo;t give us the requisite permission to host the match as on that day the counting will happen. It&rsquo;s really unfortunate, but we can&rsquo;t do much."
The Telangana State Assembly elections are scheduled to take place on November 30 and the counting of votes coincides with the date of the match, i.e., December 3.
India will take on Australia in a 5-match T20 series starting on November 23, after the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. India will play its first game in Vishakapatnam

But what does Hardik Pandya's absence mean for Team India going forward in the tournament?
The Baroda lad was on his way to recovery at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and was making decent progress. Rohit Sharma and the team management were hoping to have his services somewhere near the semi-finals but it won't happen.
Hardik's injury however, came as a blessing in disguise for Team India as it paved they way for Mohammed Shami. The pacer took the World Cup by storm by picking up 14 wickets in his first 3 matches and cemented his place in the playing XI.
Even if Hardik returned, it wouldn't have been at the cost of an in-form Shami. His exclusion also helped Suryakumar Yadav to make his ODI World Cup debut but he wasn't very impressive. Had Hardik returned, it could have been in place of Surya, which would have given Rohit 6 bowling options up his sleeves.

The presence of a genuine quick bowler like Hardik Pandya will certainly allow India to explore options of playing three specialist spinners during the World Cup, reasoned skipper Rohit Sharma ahead of his side's opening game against Australia on Sunday.
India have left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and slow left-arm orthodox Ravindra Jadeja in their rank and Rohit dropped hints that all three could feature in the playing XI at Chepauk, which at times could offer a tacky surface.
Asked if he is game on playing the troika of slow operators, Rohit replied: &ldquo;Yeah, I mean that&rsquo;s the luxury we have where we can afford to play three spinners because I don't really consider Hardik Pandya as just a seamer," said Rohit in his pre-match press meet.
&ldquo;He (Hardik) is a proper fast bowler, who can crank up good speed. So, that gives us an advantage. That gives us that luxury of playing three spinners and three seamers as well. So, there's a possibility of that,&rdquo; he added.
Obviously, the option of playing Ashwin would then allow India to have greater batting depth.
&ldquo;It gives us that balance; gives us that number eight batting option as well. We have to come here again tomorrow afternoon and see what the pitch looks like but yeah, three spinners is definitely an option,&rdquo; said Rohit. 
Rohit believes in consistency in playing eleven and hence indicated that 9 or 10 players, permitting fitness, will play all games but the best playing eleven will be based on conditions.
&ldquo;We definitely want to be a team where we want to play the best 11, but you can pick your best 11 based on the conditions that you have in front of you. Where there is a bit of assistance to the slower bowlers, you need to bring in those slower bowlers.
&ldquo;So, your core of the team will remain the same. Your 8, 9, 10 players will remain the same. There will be one or two changes here and there, which you've got to be ready to accept and take it into your stride and move forward.&rdquo; Rohit was categorical in his feeling that the World Cup is not a place for personal preferences.
&ldquo;No one should have personal preferences. It's the team that matters and the team's goal that matters.&rdquo;&nbsp; 
&nbsp;India still have some middle-order puzzle as to when they can unleash a gun player like Suryakumar Yadav.
How does the team assess which conditions to use Shreyas Iyer or SKY? &ldquo;Look, in terms of playing in these conditions, there&rsquo;s a huge amount of experience. They've played so much cricket, they know how to play. It is not for me to assess that.
"It is for them to assess that in the middle and then you give them that freedom and clarity that this is what we want from you. Now how you do it, it is completely up to you.&rdquo;
While Rohit officially maintained that Shubman Gill, who is down with dengue, is still not ruled out, he gave enough indications that the young opener is unlikely to get fit for Sunday&rsquo;s game.
&ldquo;No, it doesn't worry. I mean obviously he is sick. I feel for him. But in terms of, you know, me being the human being first, I want him to get well, not the captain thinking, oh, I want Gill to play tomorrow. No, I want him to get well,&rdquo; Rohit answered to a query about how worried he is about his opening partner.
&ldquo;He's a young guy. He's got a fit body so he'll recover quickly.&rdquo;
