Gujarat: two held for issuing threats during India-Aus match attended by PM Modi-Albanese

Mangaluru autorickshaw blast: Accused 'inspired' by global terror outfit, say police

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Alok Kumar said the police are trying to find out the 24-year old's links with people outside Karnataka.

Police found materials that go into making bomb from the rented house in Mysuru of Mangaluru autorickshaw blast accused Mohammed Shariq, who was "influenced and inspired" by a global terrorist organisation, a senior police officer said on Monday.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Alok Kumar said the police are trying to find out the 24-year old's links with people outside Karnataka.
"His handler was Abdul Mateen Taha from Suddaguntepalya (in Bengaluru) on whom the National Investigation Agency has announced a reward of Rs five lakh," the ADGP said.
Shariq was "influenced and inspired" by a (terrorist) organisation with global presence, Kumar said.
Shariq, hailing from Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, was travelling in an autorickshaw with a pressure cooker fitted with detonator, wires and batteries, when it exploded on the outskirts of Mangaluru on Saturday.
He suffered burn injuries, is currently being treated in a city hospital and unable to speak.
Karnataka police termed the explosion "an act of terror" with intention to cause serious damage.
They are probing the incident along with central agencies.
"...Our priority is to see that he survives, we have to take him to a stage where we can question him," Kumar said.
"We found matchbox, sulphur, phosphorus, batteries, circuit and nut and bolts from the (Shariq's rented) house (in Mysuru). Mohan Kumar, the owner of the house, was not aware of these activities," Kumar said.
Taha was the "main handler". He along with Khwaja and Mohammed Pasha from Tamil Nadu were booked under the provisions of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act at Suddaguntepalya in Bengaluru in 2020.
Apart from Taha, Arafat Ali from Thirthahalli was also like his handler, he added.
Search operations were carried out in seven locations including Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Mysuru and Thirthahalli, the ADGP said.
"We are trying to find out those who harboured him," he added.
Shariq is being booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, police sources said.
He was also involved in painting objectionable graffiti in Mangaluru earlier and was later released on bail.
His name had also earlier surfaced when a communal clash broke out over putting up the Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar's photo at a public place on August 15 in the district headquarters town of Shivamogga.
The vandals had gone on a rampage and stabbed Prem Singh, a servant in a nearby shop.
In this connection, police arrested Mohammed Zabihulla alias Charbi, Syed Yasin and Maaz Muneer Ahmed while Shariq absconded.
Yasin and Maaz had told police at the time that they were "brainwashed" by Shariq. The group was planning to set up an Islamic State base in the country and wanted to "establish a Caliphate" in the country.
A messaging services app came handy for Shariq to establish a link with the Syria-based Islamic State (IS) militants from whom they got a PDF to learn how to make a bomb, a police officer from Shivamogga who investigated the case told PTI.
This year, the group prepared an improvised explosive device to carry out destruction and tested it on the banks of Tunga river. Their next target was to carry out explosions in various parts of Karnataka, the officer said.
"Shariq had made the gang members into believing that the independence India got from the British was not a real one. They need to struggle further to establish a Caliphate. Only then, India will get freedom", the Shivamogga-based terror module members had told the investigating police team then.&nbsp;

Karnataka police have identified the accused in Saturday's Mangaluru autorickshaw blast case.
According to media reports, the passenger identified as Mohammed Shariq is an accused in two separate unlawful activities cases in Karnataka since 2020.
24 year old Shariq was injured in the explosion on Saturday and has sustained 40% burn injuries. The driver of the auto rickshaw was also injured .
Earlier on Sunday, senior police officials confirmed the explosion inside the moving vehicle was an act of terror triggered by low-intensity explosives concealed in a pressure cooker.

Pakistan’s former Prime minister Imran Khan faces likely arrest after police filed an FIR against him under the country’s Anti-Terrorism Act on August 20. Khan reportedly threatened the country's institutions, police officials and a senior sessions judge at a mass rally on Saturday. 
According to copy of FIR seen by news agency PTI,  the case was registered at the Margalla Police Station of Islamabad at 10 pm on Saturday under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Moreover, the FIR reads that Khan in his speech had "terrorised and threatened top police officials and a respected female additional sessions judge" with the aim to stop them from performing their functions and abstain from pursuing any action against any individual related to his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party. 
Since April this year, Imran Khan has been carrying out massive rallies against the current regime after he lost power in a confidence vote. 
During his mass rally in Islamabad on Saturday, Khan reportedly vowed to file complaints against police officers and a judge. 
Additionally, Pakistan’s media watchdog has already put a ban on live telecasts of Khan’s speeches.  
The FIR was registered after a complaint by magistrate judge Ali Javed, approached the cops. 
What could Imran Khan face under Section 7 of ATA 
Section 7 of Pakistan’s anti terrorism act say--Whoever commits a terrorist act shall--- 
(1) if such an act has resulted in the death of any person be punished with death; 
(ii) in any other case be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than seven years but may extend to life imprisonment, and shall also be liable to fine.
Typically after an FIR is registered under anti-terrorism act, the police arrest and interogate the accused. However, in the latest development according to a report in the Times of India Khan has moved the Islamabad court and sought pre-arrest bail in the case. As per reports by Pakistani media Imran could also be put under house arrest. The law enforcement agencies are said to be waiting for instructions from higher-ups. The interior ministry has reportedly sought written permission from the Prime Minister’s Office for Khan’s arrest. Meanwhile, Khan has been receiving massive support from party workers who have gathered outside his residence.

Another encounter happened on Saturday, one terrorist was gunned down and more militants are expected at this moment at Chirmarg in the Zainapora area of Shopian. However, it is not yet known who this militant is.
It has been reported that along with a terrorist a soldier was also shot dead during an encounter.Following the information provided by the JK Police in the area, the police, army, and CRPF jointly launched an operation earlier. However, the hiding militants fired upon the joint team of forces as they led to a heightened of their search for the target location.It is the 15th encounter of this year and the 2nd of this month that security forces have been involved in.
Earlier on 5th Feb, two terrorists from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and The Resistance Front (TRF) were shot dead in the Zakura area of Srinagar City.

Security forces engaged with a group of terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian&nbsp;district on Saturday, with reports saying that a terrorist was gunned down while two army soldiers laid down their lives. Reports said that the police, army and the Central Reserve Police Force launched a search operation after receiving inputs about the presence of ultras in&nbsp;Chirmarg&nbsp;village of the volatile south Kashmir district. As the forces came close to the suspected spot, the hiding ultras opened a barrage of fire which was returned. In the initial round of firing an ultra and two soldiers died while another army trooper was injured.&nbsp; A defence ministry spokesperson based in Srinagar identified the slain soldiers as Santosh Yadav and Chavan Romit Tanaji, both from the&nbsp;Rashtriya Rifles unit. This is the 15th encounter between security&nbsp;forces and terrorists in Kashmir valley since the beginning of this year.

"And so, I am well aware of what considerations went behind the decision. Unfortunately, the people of Pakistan were not a consideration," Mr Khan said while addressing officers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad.
"The considerations, instead, were the same as in the 1980s, when we participated in the Afghan jihad," he said, referring to the Soviet-Afghan war, which was then dubbed as the "holy war".
"We ourselves are responsible... as we let [others] use us, sacrificed the reputation of our country for aid and made a foreign policy that went against the public interest [and was devised] for money."

Despite heightened security in Jammu and Kashmir owing to the recent target killings, suspected militants struck again in the capital city Srinagar, killing a policeman.&nbsp;
Reports said 29-year-old policeman Tauseef Ahmad was fired upon by the unidentified gunmen in SD Colony area of Batamaloo&nbsp;in Srinagar&nbsp;from a close range.&nbsp;Ahmad&nbsp;was immediately rushed to nearby&nbsp;SMHS hospital where doctors declared him dead. He had served with anti-insurgency Special Operation Group of the Jammu&nbsp;and Kashmir Police.&nbsp;
Soon after the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and conduted searches but the militants managed to flee.&nbsp;Since past two months Kashmir has seen an escalation in violence with unarmed civilians being targeted by the terror groups.
