The assault on the military vehicle happened several weeks after terrorists ambushed two army vehicles, killing four soldiers.

Suspected terrorists fired upon a convoy of vehicles carrying security personnel in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday evening, prompting security forces to launch a search operation, officials said.
No security personnel was injured in the attack, they said.
"At around 1800h today, a Security Forces convoy of vehicles was fired upon by suspected terrorists from a jungle near Krishna Ghati, Poonch sector. No casualties to own troops. Joint search operations by Indian Army and JKP (Jammu and Kashmir Police) are in progress," the White Night Corps of the Army posted on X.
The vehicles that came under attack were carrying security personnel back to the camp, the officials said.
The incident came after a high-level security meeting chaired by Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi to chart out an anti-terror operation plan for the new year to foil design of terrorists in the region.
A similar ambush on Army vehicles took place in Poonch's Dhatya Morh in Dera Ki Gali area on December 21. Four Army personnel were killed in the attack.
Rajouri and Poonch districts, which were peaceful in the past, have witnessed targeted attacks by terrorists on the Army and civilians, they said.
Nineteen soldiers were killed in four attacks by terrorists in Rajouri and Poonch in 2023. The security forces have eliminated more than 30 terrorists in the two districts -- along the Line of Control (LoC) as well as in the hinterland -- last year

Police said the area has been cordoned off after the incident.
Meanwhile, the situation remained tense in the Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu following the deaths of three civilians who were allegedly picked up by Army for questioning in the recent Poonch ambush.
Mobile internet was suspended in the two districts. Several Kashmiri leaders condemned the incident.
The search operation is ongoing to track down the terrorists involved in the Poonch attack which left five Army soldiers dead.

Jammu and Kashmir Police first in country to introduce GPS tracker anklets for terror accused

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have introduced GPS trackers for terror accused after a NIA court obeserved that such devices must be introduced.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The Jammu and Kashmir Police has introduced GPS tracker anklets for monitoring the terror accused out on bail, becoming the first police force in the country to do so, officials said on Saturday.
The GPS tracker anklet is a wearable device affixed around the ankle of the person to be monitored and tracks their movement.
The device is already being used in Western countries such as the USA, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand to track the movement of accused persons on bail, parole and house arrest and accordingly de-congests prisons to a large extent.
The officials of the State Investigation Agency (SIA) of the J-K Police have introduced the GPS tracker anklet for monitoring of bail-out terror accused, the officials said.
They said the J-K Police is the first police department in the country to introduce such a device.
The officials said the devices were introduced after a Special NIA Court, Jammu, passed an order directing the police to affix a GPS tracker anklet on a terror accused -- the importance of which was highlighted by the prosecution department of the police.
Giving details of the case, the officials said in an FIR registered under various sections of UAPA, accused Ghulam Mohd Bhat had applied for bail.
During the pendency of the bail hearing, the accused sought to be released on interim bail. The accused is undergoing trial for being associated with different terrorist organisations and being involved in terror financing at the behest of proscribed terrorist organisation Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), they said.
Bhat was arrested in the current FIR while attempting to transport the proceeds of terrorism to the tune of Rs 2.5 lakh at the behest of HM.
The accused is also convicted by the NIA Court Patiala House, Delhi, in another case for being associated with a terrorist organisation and for conspiracy for a terrorist act, the officials said.
In the Special NIA Court, Jammu, the importance of close monitoring of the terror accused and the stringent conditions for grant of bail under the UAPA, 1967, was highlighted by the prosecution department of Zonal Police Headquarters (ZPHQ), Jammu, the officials said.
&ldquo;Finding merit in the submissions of the prosecution, the Special NIA Court, Jammu, was pleased to pass an order directing J-K Police to affix a GPS tracker anklet on the accused,&rdquo; they added.
J-K Police is the pioneering police department in the country to provide for affixing of GPS tracker anklets to persons seeking bail, they said.

Imran Khan, PTI leaders booked for terrorism, vandalism outside Islamabad court

Pakistani police on Sunday registered a terrorism case against Imran Khan and over a dozen PTI leaders for indulging in vandalism, attacking security personnel and creating unrest outside the judicial complex ahead of a court hearing in a graft case involving the ousted premier.
Clashes erupted outside the Islamabad Judicial Complex on Saturday when Khan arrived in Islamabad from Lahore to attend a much-awaited hearing in the Toshakhana case.
During the confrontation between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers and police, over 25 security personnel were injured, prompting Additional District and Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal to defer the court hearing till March 30.
The case was registered against arrested PTI workers and wanted party leaders. About 17 PTI leaders were named in the FIR lodged by the Islamabad Police, Geo News reported.
The FIR states that the workers damaged the police check post and the main gate of the judicial complex, it said.

Heavily-armed terrorists from Pakistan struck in Mumbai on November 26, 2008 in which at least 174 people, including 26 foreign nationals, were killed and over 300 people injured.

The Presidential Statement said that Security Council reminds all States that they have an "obligation to curb the terrorist activities of all individuals, groups, undertakings, and entities included on the ISIL (Da&rsquo;esh) and Al-Qaeda Sanctions list created pursuant to resolutions 1267" regardless of the nationality or residence of such individuals, groups, undertakings, or entities.
The Council urged member states to participate actively in maintaining and updating the ISIL and Al-Qaeda Sanctions List by contributing additional information, submitting delisting requests when appropriate, and by identifying and nominating for listing additional individuals, groups, undertakings, and entities.
China, an all-weather ally of Islamabad, has repeatedly placed holds and blocks on bids by India and the US to list Pakistan-based terrorists like Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar.
The Council reiterated the obligation of member states to prevent the movement of terrorists or terrorist groups by, inter alia, effective border controls, and, urged member states to exchange information expeditiously, improve cooperation among competent authorities to prevent the movement of terrorists and terrorist groups to and from their territories, the supply of weapons for terrorists and financing that would support terrorists and terrorist groups.
The statement underlined that safe havens provided to terrorists continue to be a significant concern and urged member states to cooperate fully in the fight against terrorism in order to find, "deny safe haven to, and bring to justice, extradite or prosecute, in accordance with applicable international law, any person who supports, facilitates, participates or attempts to participate in the financing, planning, preparation or commission of terrorist acts or provides safe havens."
Through the Presidential statement, the Council condemned in the strongest terms terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and all terrorist acts, including those on the basis of xenophobia, racism and other forms of intolerance, or in the name of religion or belief, and further reaffirmed that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilisation, or group.

The Council also strongly condemned attacks by terrorist groups or individuals on civilians, critical infrastructure and soft targets, including transnational and cross-border attacks, and demanded the immediate cessation of such attacks, and called on all member states to summon the requisite political will to denounce all acts of terrorism.
The Security Council expressed its deep concerns as terrorist groups continue to make efforts to destabilise governments.
The Council noted with concern that terrorist groups craft "distorted narratives" that are based on the misinterpretation and misrepresentation of religion to justify violence, and that terrorist groups further seek to use names or religion or religious symbols, in order to manipulate followers and for propaganda or recruitment purposes.
The Council recognised the "importance of conducting outreach to entities with expertise and experience in crafting counter-narratives and promoting tolerance and coexistence, including religious actors, to counter terrorist propaganda and narratives." The Council strongly condemned the flow of weapons, military equipment, unmanned aerial systems and their components, and IED components to and between Da&rsquo;esh, Al-Qaeda, their affiliates and associated individuals or groups and encouraged member states to prevent and disrupt procurement networks for such weapons.&nbsp;

However, there have been increases in radical nationalism and right-wing extremist ideology in Australia in the past couple of years, Burgess said.
&ldquo;Individuals are still fantasising about killing other Australians, still spouting their hateful ideologies in chat rooms, still honing their capabilities by researching bomb-making and training with weapons,&rdquo; Burgess said.
There have been 11 terrorist attacks and another 21 plots have been disrupted since the threat assessment was elevated from &ldquo;possible&rdquo; to &ldquo;probable&rdquo; in 2014, he said.
Half of the foiled plots were in the first two years of the upgraded risk when the Islamic State group was more prominent.
There have also been 153 terrorism-related charges stemming from 79 counterterrorism operations in Australia since 2014.
Burgess warned it was almost guaranteed that the threat level will increase again. But this would not necessarily be the result of a terrorist attack, with the overall security assessment taking into account individuals acting alone, he said.
People are being radicalised online at an extreme pace, sometimes in as short as weeks or months, he said.
But there are fewer groups planning months- or years-long sophisticated terrorist attacks with the aim of maximum destruction, he said.
More than 50 people convicted of terrorist offenses are also due for release in the future, but only a small number will be freed by 2025, Burgess said.

Asserting that terrorism is, undoubtedly, the most serious threat to global peace and security, he said, "But I believe that financing of terrorism is more dangerous than terrorism itself because the 'means and methods' of terrorism are nurtured from such funding." "Furthermore, the financing of terrorism weakens the economy of countries of the world," he said addressing delegates at the conference hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs here.

Modi said one of the sources of terror funding is organised crime which must not be seen in isolation.
"The gangs have deep links with terrorists. The money made in gun running, drugs and smuggling is being pumped into terrorism... Action against organised crimes is extremely important in the fight against terrorism." Asserting the country will not rest till terrorism is uprooted, Modi said the long-term impact of terrorism is particularly hard on the poor and local economy.
He said all terrorist attacks deserve equal outrage and action. Only a uniform, unified, zero-tolerance approach can defeat terrorism, Modi stressed.

Noting that terrorist groups continue plotting attacks in Pakistan, it said a local history of terrorism and ongoing ideological aspirations of violence by extremist elements have led to indiscriminate attacks on civilian as well as local military and police targets.
“Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, military installations, airports, universities, tourist locations, schools, hospitals, places of worship, and government facilities. Terrorists have targeted US diplomats and diplomatic facilities in the past,” the advisory said.

The Mumbai police have launched a manhunt for two suspected "Bangladeshi terrorists" carrying Indian passports, who were scheduled to fly to Serbia from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, but were barred from boarding the flight, an official said on Saturday.
According to the police, the Foreign Return Citizen (FRC) desk of the airport had received an email on July 18, informing them that two men travelling with Indian passports under the names of Sujan Sarkar and Sameer Roy were "Bangladeshi terrorists".
The sender of the email also urged the authorities to arrest the duo, the official said.
On receiving the email, all the concerned agencies, including the police, were alerted about the two suspects and a search was launched for them, he said.
During the enquiry, the police found out that the duo had been at the airport on July 18 to board a flight to Serbia, but the airline authorities had barred them from travelling, after they failed to furnish some documents, the official said.
The police suspect that the duo was still in the city and have initiated a search for them, he said.
It is suspected that the duo were carrying fake passports made by an agent and a rival agent may have sent the email to the airport authorities, the official said, adding that no FIR has been registered in this regard so far.

According to the police, the Foreign Return Citizen (FRC) desk of the airport had received an email on July 18, informing them that two men travelling with Indian passports under the names of Sujan Sarkar and Sameer Roy were "Bangladeshi terrorists".
The sender of the email also urged the authorities to arrest the duo, the official said.

On receiving the email, all the concerned agencies, including the police, were alerted about the two suspects and a search was launched for them, he said.
During the enquiry, the police found out that the duo had been at the airport on July 18 to board a flight to Serbia, but the airline authorities had barred them from travelling, after they failed to furnish some documents, the official said.
The police suspect that the duo was still in the city and have initiated a search for them, he said.
It is suspected that the duo were carrying fake passports made by an agent and a rival agent may have sent the email to the airport authorities, the official said, adding that no FIR has been registered in this regard so far.

A few spots on the globe appear to be hotspots of this fake location racket.
Chinese vessels are believed to use this technology to hide their illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific. Russian ships do this to allegedly smuggle sanctioned oil and stolen Ukrainian grain. North Korean ships hide their locations to export coal, and import oil in violation of UN sanctions. Ships may use fake locations to buy Iranian oil in violation of US sanctions. It's the same case with Venezuela. Meanwhile, many ships transmitting false locations are registered in Cyprus, to enjoy European financial services and legal safeguards, according to the New York Times.
A bigger emerging threat, especially in tense times like now, is the targeting of naval warships using this technology.
News reports suggest that locations of over 100 warships have been faked since August 2020. False data showed these warships entering disputed waters, or sailing near other countries' naval bases. The fake location data came from shore-based AIS receivers, while satellite data showed the real positions of these warships.
Most of the targeted warships were from NATO, and European fleets. Much of the false data showed the warships near Russian territories. This has sparked suspicion that Russia's prolific hackers may be behind the transmission of fake locations. It could be Moscow's plan to portray Western powers as aggressors.
If the spread of this technology is not stemmed, another big threat may be staring at the world.
Experts feel that this fake location tech is likely to spread to planes soon. Planes use satellite transponders similar to ships. Airplanes transmitting fake locations can be big danger, as they can be used for deadly terror attacks. It would also give a fillip to smuggling, and illegal border crossing.
The onus to take action lies on the United Nations. The UN needs to adopt and enforce stricter rules. Better security protocols for AIS transponder software are needed, apart from improved scrutiny of transponder manufacturers, and officials. A regular detailed analysis of satellite data can help spot defaulters. Finally, strict sanctions need to be imposed on ships and companies found faking locations.
Meanwhile, the Quadrilateral alliance, which includes India, USA, Japan, and Australia, seems to already be on the right track to curb this fake location racket.
The Quad is implementing a satellite surveillance system in the Indo-Pacific. It will monitor radio frequencies, and radar signals to track ships. This would help track ships which even have their AIS transponders switched off, thus sidestepping the fake location tactic. Satellite technology will be used to link surveillance centres in multiple nations in the region. The move is aimed at curbing weapons trafficking, and illegal fishing, mainly by China.
Over 70% of the Earth's surface is covered with water. Maritime trade and travel have been common for thousands of years. With modern technology making ships bigger and safer, we now have 70% of global trade by value being carried by sea. If authorities across the world fail to curb fake location technologies, waters of the world might just turn into the wild, wild west.

The body of Hussain, a resident of Sabzkot village of Kotli in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), was handed over to Pakistan by the Indian Army at Chakan Da Bagh crossing point on the LoC in Poonch district on September 5, an Indian Army official said, adding this is probably the first instance in more than two decades of Pakistan accepting the body of a terrorist.&nbsp;
In Islamabad, the Foreign Office said it summoned the Indian diplomat and registered a strong protest over what it called &ldquo;the extra-judicial killing&rdquo; of Hussain.&nbsp;
The Cd&rsquo;A was conveyed Pakistan&rsquo;s &ldquo;outright rejection of the claim&rdquo; that Hussain died of &ldquo;cardiac arrest&rdquo; as claimed by the Indian authorities as well as the narrative being spun that he had been sent by the Pakistan Army, the FO said.&nbsp;

Raina also claimed that the security forces have found photos and videos of the BJP office on Hussain's phone. "Hussain recced BJP office and sent videos to terrorists in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK)."
The clarification came after Congress came down heavily on the BJP over its alleged links with the terrorists.
Hussain, who was arrested in Reasi district on Sunday along with another LeT militant, was reported to be the IT and social media cell in-charge of the BJP's minority morcha in the Jammu province.
Soon after his arrest purported pictures of Hussain with Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina and his participation in party functions emerged on social media.

While the authorities are yet to be able to put a stop to the targeted killings, a former spymaster has some theories about who might be behind the attacks.

He opined that the cell is based in Jammu and Kashmir's capital city Srinagar, and it is most probably Pakistani terrorists who are running the operation. Most significantly, he suggested that these terrorists are using information gathered from "sympathisers" in the government system.
In the May 19 interview Dulat called the current wave of attacks the most "dangerous" form of terrorism since the dilution of Article 370, which led to the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status in August 2019.
He said that the terrorists behind the attacks are unknown, unlike earlier times when agencies and forces had an idea of the terrorist commanders. Dulat also said that it is very serious that the terror cell is probably operating from Srinagar - a phenomenon not seen since the 1990s.
He also called the terror cell "professional" in its operations. With terrorists using small arms which are more difficult to detect, Dulat said that silencers might be making a comeback to the Valley. Lastly, the ability of terrorists to tap into the government system for information is a cause for concern.
The spate of attacks has led to fresh concern regarding the security situation in the Union Territory. On May 12, government employee Rahul Bhat was killed at the Chadoora tehsil office in Budgam. Five days later, a grenade attack occurred at a liquor store, killing employee Ranjit Singh and injuring 3 others.
Then, on May 24, policeman Saifullah Qadri was killed near his Srinagar home. His 9-yr-old daughter was also injured. Just a day later, terrorists killed TV artiste Amreen Bhat at her Chadoora home. Her 10-yr-old nephew was also injured.
On May 31, government school teacher Rajni Bala was murdered by terrorists in Kulgam. On June 2 morning, bank manager Vijay Kumar, who hailed from Rajasthan, was shot dead in Kulgam. On the same day, in the evening, Dilkhush, a labourer from Bihar was killed, and another was injured in an attack in Budgam.
The Narendra Modi government has responded to the attacks with high-level meetings. With the Amarnath Yatra beginning on June 30, and lakhs of pilgrims heading to Jammu and Kashmir, the administration has only a few weeks to bring the situation under control.

He said that the terrorists behind the attacks are unknown, unlike earlier times when agencies and forces had an idea of the terrorist commanders. Dulat also said that it is very serious that the terror cell is probably operating from Srinagar - a phenomenon not seen since the 1990s.
He also called the terror cell "professional" in its operations. With terrorists using small arms which are more difficult to detect, Dulat said that silencers might be making a comeback to the Valley. Lastly, the ability of terrorists to tap into the government system for information is a cause for concern.
The spate of attacks has led to fresh concern regarding the security situation in the Union Territory. On May 12, government employee Rahul Bhat was killed at the Chadoora tehsil office in Budgam. Five days later, a grenade attack occurred at a liquor store, killing employee Ranjit Singh and injuring 3 others.
Then, on May 24, policeman Saifullah Qadri was killed near his Srinagar home. His 9-yr-old daughter was also injured. Just a day later, terrorists killed TV artiste Amreen Bhat at her Chadoora home. Her 10-yr-old nephew was also injured.
On May 31, government school teacher Rajni Bala was murdered by terrorists in Kulgam. On June 2 morning, bank manager Vijay Kumar, who hailed from Rajasthan, was shot dead in Kulgam. On the same day, in the evening, Dilkhush, a labourer from Bihar was killed, and another was injured in an attack in Budgam.
The Narendra Modi government has responded to the attacks with high-level meetings. With the Amarnath Yatra beginning on June 30, and lakhs of pilgrims heading to Jammu and Kashmir, the administration has only a few weeks to bring the situation under control.
