The discount follows a slow first quarter for the film industry, with Hindi and other language films struggling to attract audiences

After facing a slump due to fewer releases and low occupancy, theatres are offering discounts on movie tickets to boost sales.
Multiplexes and single screens have teamed up to offer movie tickets at 99 rupees on May 31, observed as Cinema Lovers Day, across major chains such as PVR Inox, Cinepolis India, Miraj Cinemas, Multa A2, and MovieMax.
This promotional offer aims to attract audiences amidst a sluggish first quarter for the film industry.

Limited Hollywood releases and the ongoing national elections have also impacted ticket sales and the flow of new releases. Movie tickets are available for online booking as well as offline purchase. Interested viewers can book tickets through platforms such as BookMyShow, Paytm, or the respective websites of multiplexes. Further information regarding ticket offers and food and beverage deals will be disclosed at participating cinemas, on their websites, and through their social media channels.&nbsp;

While hearing a case on allowing outside food&nbsp; in cinema halls, a Supreme Court bench tickled some funny bones while trying to put forth its argument.&nbsp;
The bench comprising of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha was looking at petitions calling for a ban on food and beverages brought from outside in cinema halls.&nbsp;
The bench ruled in favour of theatres and multiplexes stating that they have the right to regulate food and beverages from outside and it did so with some light humour.&nbsp;
It set aside a Jammu &amp; Kashmir High Court order that allowed movie goers to bring food from outside, on the grounds that people should not be forced to eat whatever is served in the cinema halls.
The bench stated that cinema halls are for entertainment and like people choose which theatre to go to, the owners of the halls have the right to decide what is allowed and what is not allowed within the halls, as long as it does not endanger public safety or welfare.&nbsp;
'Theatres are private properties, the High Court overstepped its jurisdiction while saying any food can be allowed inside. Let the owners make the rules,' the judges said.&nbsp;
While trying to put forth his point, the CJI asked, 'What if someone starts getting jalebis inside cinema halls and then wipes their sticky fingers on the seats? I'm just stating an example. Who will clean it?'&nbsp;
The exchange became even funnier as he added the example of tandoori chicken, 'If someone has brought tandoori chicken then there will be complaints of bones left in the hall, that could be a bother to someone too.'&nbsp;
The High Court had stated in its judgement that free water must be provided by the theatres, especially to children.&nbsp;
Responding to this the bench said, 'Free water can be allowed but,' it continued with another cheeky example, 'what if the theatre sells nimbu paani for Rs 20, then you can't say I'll bring lemons from outside and squeeze it in my flask and make it inside the hall.'&nbsp;
The bench said whether or not to see a movie is entirely the choice of the viewer and, if he or she seeks to enter a cinema hall, they have to abide by the terms and conditions subject to which the entry is granted.
"It is open to the theatre owner to determine as to whether food from outside the precinct of the hall should be permitted within," it said, adding that it is evidently a matter of commercial decision of a theatre owner.
The Jammu &amp; Kashmir High Court in July 2018 had scrapped the ban on outside food and beverages in cinema halls reasoning that movie goers are forced to consume whatever is sold at the theatre.&nbsp;
In August 2018, the top court had stayed the high court direction to the cinema hall and multiplex owners of the state not to prohibit movie goers from carrying own food and water inside the theatres.

Aahana Kumra, the OTT, stage and big screen star says, "For me theatre is the reason why I became an actor.&nbsp; This snapshot is from my first ever sold-out show, 'By George' for Motley and it was directed by none other than Naseeruddin Shah. This was my debut on stage as a professional actor and right after this performance, I just went and hugged him, and wept with joy. That was the beginning of a story that I continue to be a part of till date."&nbsp;

Veteran actor Himani Shivpuri&nbsp;looks back at her journey with wonder and says, "Well, my story began while doing my MSc in Organic Chemistry when I got to know about the National School of Drama and left my academic career to join it. I went on to join the NSD Repertory Company where I did beautiful plays like 'Mitro Marajani', 'Othello', 'Surya Ki Antim Kiran Se Surya Ki Pehli Kiran Tak' and 'Aazar Ka Khwab'. My most memorable role was in 'Mitro&nbsp; Marajani' which was based on Krishna Sobti's Sahitya Award-winning novel. Mitro is a very bold character and it was a great challenge to play it. In fact, Krishna Sobti ji embraced me after watching the play and said, "You have brought my Mitro to life. This is how I imagined her to be." I treasure her words&nbsp;&nbsp; and wish more stories like this were written today."&nbsp; &nbsp;
Dilnaz Irani&nbsp;
Dilnaz Irani, who has made an impact on many mediums says, "My journey started with my first commercial play, 'I'm Not Bajirao'.&nbsp; Since then, every time I do a play, or perform 'The Vagina Monologues' for the 2000th time, I feel it is part of the same story that began all those years ago.&nbsp; Theatre is a bug, and once you are bitten by it, there is no going back. There is no antidote.&nbsp; I wouldn't give it up for anything in the world. The stage is where I can be myself and live someone else's life, at the same time."&nbsp;
Rajeev Siddhartha&nbsp;
Prolific performer, Rajeev Siddhartha recalls, "My theatre story began was when I was just eight years old and we did a play called 'The Stone Soup.'&nbsp;&nbsp; I had to come to the stage, take my jacket off and say my lines. It was, I suppose, the beginning of a lifelong journey and exploration. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to do many plays as a professional actor and I dare say, I am getting to a point where far from being a bundle of nerves before going on stage, I now feel at home whenever I make my entrance. That is why theatre will never die because as long as we want to tell stories, we will need theatre to be our conduit.
