However, many of us cook and eat them in a wrong way unable to fully benefit from their nutritional properties.

According to Practicing Ayurveda Dr. Manisha Mishra tomato is an acidic fruit. Hence, one should avoid eating tomatoes daily and preferably consume them cooked. However, if you like eating them raw, then it&rsquo;s better to remove the seeds. The doctor also said that instead of green tomatoes, add red tomatoes to your diet. Lastly, one can only benefit from tomatoes if they are cooked in healthy fats like butter and ghee.&nbsp;
Dr. Manisha Mishra also mentioned that tomatoes are great for the skin too. If you apply raw tomatoes on your skin, it'll make it glow and reduce tanning.

A Jaipur-bound truckload of tomatoes, a precious commodity across the country now, went missing in what is suspected to be another "heist" linked to Karnataka.
A trader has claimed that he lost touch with the driver and cleaner of his truck, which was carrying 11 tonnes of tomatoes from the district headquarters town of Kolar, en route to the Rajasthan capital. A complaint has been filed with Kolar police, in which the trader has alleged that the truck was carrying tomatoes worth Rs 21 lakh.
Representatives at Kolar Agricultural Produce Market Committee, from where the produce left, pegged the price of tomatoes at Rs 160 per kg.
According to the complaint, the truck loaded with 750 crates left the local 'mandi' in Kolar on July 27 and the consignment was scheduled to reach its destination in Jaipur for supply to a local vegetable market there.
The truck, which was being tracked through the GPS tracking system, had apparently covered around 1,800 km since it left Kolar. The vehicle was supposed to reach its destination in Jaipur by Saturday night. But when it did not do so, the trader tried to contact the driver but his phone was switched off, a senior police officer said.
The concerned trader then filed a complaint at Kolar police station stating that the truck had gone missing.

The government on Friday said retail prices of tomatoes are expected to fall with higher supply of new crops from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
The retail prices have shot up to Rs 200-250 per kilogram in several parts of the country as supply chain got disrupted due to monsoon rains and other issues.
In a written reply to Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Ashwini Kumar Choubey said, "Prices of tomato are expected to come down with the increase in arrival of new crop from Nashik, Naryangaon and Aurangabad belt in Maharashtra and also from Madhya Pradesh." He said the "current increase in tomato prices may incentivize farmers to grow more tomato crop which is expected to stabilize the prices in coming months".
Choubey attributed the recent increase in prices to a combination of factors like "crop seasonality, white fly disease in Kolar (Karnataka), instantaneous arrival of monsoon rains in northern part of the country which adversely affected tomato crops in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and logistics disruptions in isolated areas due to heavy rains." The minister informed that the average daily retail price of tomato had crossed Rs 150 per kg in Delhi, Punjab, Chandigarh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the week July 10-16.
As on July 18, the average retail price in Delhi declined to Rs 130 per kg and to Rs 127.70 per kg in Punjab.
In order to check prices of tomatoes and make them affordable, the government has started their procurement under Price Stabilisation Fund and is making them available at a highly subsidised rate to consumers.
The National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) are continuously procuring tomatoes from 'mandis' in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra and making them available at affordable prices in major consuming centres in Delhi-NCR, Bihar, Rajasthan, etc.
Tomatoes have been disposed initially at retail price of Rs 90 per kg which has been reduced to Rs 80 per kg from July 16 and further to Rs 70 per kg from July 20.
Till July 18, a total of 391 tonne tomatoes had been procured for continuous retail disposal in major consumption centres for the benefit of consumers.

4. Multiple crop cycles with varying time spans across locations lead to more than one spell of price spike within the same year.
5. Empirical estimates show that even though margins (the wedge between wholesale and retail prices) respond to shocks, their elasticity to wholesale prices is low &ndash; for a one per cent rise in wholesale prices, the wedge increases by 0.1 per cent. Thus margins act as a shock absorbing mechanism and, therefore, inflation in retail prices is less volatile than wholesale.

The all-India average price stood at nearly Rs 117 per kg, according to government data.
To provide relief to retail consumers, the Centre is selling tomato at a discounted Rs 80 per kg in select cities like Delhi-NCR, Patna and Lucknow. About 18,000 kgs were sold in Delhi-NCR on Saturday through mobile vans.
National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF) and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) are selling tomato on behalf of the Centre through mobile vans.
"In addition to various parts of Delhi and Noida, sale of tomatoes at discounted rates started today at Lucknow, Patna and Muzaffarpur," Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh tweeted.

A gang of three allegedly hijacked and fled with a truck laden with tomatoes after an incident of road rage near Bengaluru according to police.
The police have registered a case and efforts are on to nab the culprits.
Farmer Mallesh from Hiriyur in Chitradurga district, was transporting a load of tomatoes to Kolar on July 8 and the truck accidentally bumped into the car in which the accused were travelling. The mirror of the car suffered damage in the accident.&nbsp;
The accused demanded a huge compensation from the farmer and the truck driver. When the duo said they don't have the money the accused then allegedly took control of the truck forcefully and started driving it.
The gang ultimately pushed the farmer and the driver out of the truck and sped away with tomatoes totalling about 2.5 tonnes, worth between Rs 2.5 to 3 lakh.

Gangotri Dham has witnessed the steepest increase, with tomatoes being sold at ₹250 per kg. Similarly, in Uttarkashi, the versatile vegetable is available at prices ranging from ₹180 to ₹200.
The price hike can be attributed to adverse weather conditions in the growing areas. Heavy rainfall and hotter-than-normal temperatures last month have severely affected tomato production, resulting in a fivefold increase in prices compared to previous years. While tomato prices typically rise during the lean production months of June and July, the situation this year has been exacerbated.
Delhi-NCR has witnessed a similar disruption in tomato supply, leading to retail prices surging up to ₹140 per kg. The region's reliance on producing centres, which have been impacted by heavy rains, has caused this supply disruption.
The situation in Mumbai is no different, with tomato prices crossing ₹150 per kg on 4 July. Additionally, ginger, chillies, and coriander have also experienced price surges.

Retail tomato prices have shot up to Rs 155 per kg across major cities in the country due to the supply disruption caused due to rain in the producing region, as per the official data.
In metros, retail tomato prices were ruling in the range of Rs 58-148 per kg, with the highest in Kolkata at Rs 148 per kg and lowest in Mumbai at Rs 58 per kg.
In Delhi and Chennai, prices were ruling at Rs 110 per kg and 117 per kg, respectively.
As per the data maintained by the consumer affairs ministry, the average all-India retail price was Rs 83.29 per kg, with a modal price of Rs 100 per kg.
The highest Rs 155 per kg was in Siliguri, West Bengal, the data showed.
Meanwhile, in the national capital, the local vendors are selling tomato in the range of Rs 120-140 per kg depending on the quality and locality.
"We have purchased best quality tomato at Rs 120 per kg from Azadpur wholesale market and selling at Rs 140 per kg in retail," local vendor Jyotish Kumar Jha in Paschim Vihar said.
The supply has been disrupted in the last two week from the producing states, where harvesting and transportation have been affected.
The government has maintained that the current spike in tomato prices is a seasonal phenomenon, and around this time, prices generally remain high. The prices are expected to cool down in the next 15 days and normalise in a month.

As per Indian Express, the reason for the current high prices can be traced back to their sudden fall in April-May, which led many growers to abandon their crops. The unusual heat of March and April also saw pest attacks that took a toll on production.
Ajay Kedia, a Mumbai-based commodity market expert and head of Kedia Advisory was quoted by NDTV saying, "This year, for a variety of reasons, fewer tomatoes were sown than in prior years. As the price of beans surged last year, many farmers switched to growing beans this year. However, a lack of monsoon rains has caused the crops to dry out and wilt. The limited supply of vegetables, particularly tomatoes are due to crop damage caused by heavy rainfall and extreme heat." Due to persistent rains that have harmed the crop and made transportation challenging, tomato prices have surged in the southern state of Karnataka and its capital city Bengaluru.
According to the database kept by the Department of Consumer Affairs' Price Monitoring Division, the average price of a kilo of tomatoes in retail marketplaces increased from ₹25 to ₹41. The range of the maximum tomato prices in retail markets was between ₹80 and ₹113.
Meanwhile, farmers say that prices of tomatoes are unlikely to come down anytime soon.&nbsp;

As per The Hindu, a 15-kg crate of tomatoes was sold for ₹1,100 in Kolar wholesale APMC market on Sunday and this is expected to further drive up the price in the retail market.&nbsp;
A farmer told the publication that the sowing itself was lower this year compared to the previous year. He also mentioned that farmers switched to beans this year as the price of beans skyrocketed last year.
&ldquo;The sowing of tomato this year is lower than the previous years, for various reasons. Many farmers in Kolar shifted to beans this year, as the price of beans skyrocketed last year. However, due to deficient monsoons crops have dried up and wilted. The tomato crop in the district may be only 30% of the usual,&rdquo; said Anji Reddy, a tomato farmer from Kolar told The Hindu.
The deficient rainfall has also lead to crop loss in Maharashtra. Buyers are now moving to West Bengal, Odisha, and even export from Bangladesh to meet the demand. The production would be only 30% of the usual.&nbsp;
As per Mint, in May, tomato rates crashed to ₹3-5 per KG and that many farmers were forced to throw away their produce by driving tractors through the crop. This is also one of the reasons for the farmer's lack of interest in the cultivation of tomatoes.
A tomato trader has told The Economic Times that Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are suffering from shortage of tomatoes and that they are now relying on Bengaluru for supply.&nbsp;
Usually during the period between June and July rains are expected to hit and vegetable prices generally see a downward direction. However, the scenes are quite different this year. The price of a kg of beans is in the range of ₹120- ₹140, prices of some varieties of carrots are inching the ₹100 mark, and capsicum prices have crossed ₹80 per kg. In addition to vegetables, egg prices have surged in the range of ₹7- ₹8 per egg.
With rise in vegetable prices, hotels are also expected to increase the rates. The Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels&rsquo; Association has told The Hindu that they are adopting a wait and watch approach but price hike on the menu is inevitable.
