According to a recent report by the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), KPMG, and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), India's sustainable tourism market is projected to grow at a huge annual rate (CAGR) of 19.3 per cent by 2032. Eco-tourism alone is projected to expand by 15.7% from 2019 to 2027, reaching a staggering market size of $4.55 billion. This growth represents a significant shift in both traveler preferences and the country's tourism strategy. &nbsp;
<h3>Government initiatives in boosting India&rsquo;s Eco-Tourism&nbsp;</h3>
India&rsquo;s rich biodiversity, ranging from tropical rainforests and arid deserts to mountain ecosystems and coastal regions, provides a perfect canvas for eco-tourism. National parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and bio-reserves across the country are attracting more visitors looking for nature-centric travel experiences. &nbsp;
The Indian government has been actively promoting eco-tourism through various initiatives aimed at conserving natural resources, protecting wildlife, and encouraging sustainable practices in tourism. In the 2023-24 budget, ₹1,412 crore was allocated to Swadesh Darshan 2.0, with a strong emphasis on promoting sustainable and eco-friendly tourism. In the Union Budget 2021-22, the government allocated ₹1,200 crore to develop tourism in the North-East, including eco-tourism projects. &nbsp;
As of 2022, the Green India Mission had an outlay of ₹47,000 crore, and part of these funds is being used to create eco-friendly tourism infrastructure in forest and wildlife-rich regions.&nbsp;

According to a report by ET Travel, one such brilliant example is Chambal Safari Lodge, which has been actively involved in conservation efforts for over 25 years. The lodge has reclaimed 20 acres of forest, protected 10 hectares of natural habitat, and has played a crucial role in boosting the local gharial population from 200 to more than 2,000.&nbsp;
A few more examples are Vanghat Lodge, a renowned eco-lodge that is deeply committed to sustainability along with CGH Earth Hotels in Kerala, Bamboo Forest Safari Lodge in Maharashtra among many more.&nbsp;
Periyar National Park in Kerala is also one of India&rsquo;s prime examples of community-based eco-tourism along with The Sunderbans, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Eco-tourism initiatives in this region focus on preserving the fragile ecosystem while promoting community participation. &nbsp;

The growing momentum in the Travel and Tourism sectors is expected to generate 5.82 crore jobs in India by 2033. This as per a top executive of global technology and digital talent solutions provider NLB Services. In August 2023, the tourism sector recorded 44% hike in talent demand and 1.6 million additional jobs were expected to be added in the entire year
<h3>Tourism Jobs</h3>
As per NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug, in 2020, the pandemic year, Tourism sector accounted for 390 lakh jobs, constituting 8% of the nation's total workforce.&nbsp;
"The growing synergy of the sector has led to steadfast employment generation across the country both in tier I and II locations. In the pandemic year 2020, the tourism sector accounted for 39 million jobs, constituting 8% of the nation's total workforce. Post the pandemic recovery tenure, this was one of the sectors that saw the quickest recovery," NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug said in a statement.
Serving as a crucial source of foreign exchange, travel, and tourism contributed Rs 15.9 lakh crore (USD 191.25 billion) to India's economy in 2022 and was estimated at Rs 16.5 lakh crore for 2023, he noted.
From the city perspective, Alug said, the top five states attracting domestic tourists so far include Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
Top cities driving the increase in hiring in the sector include Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kochi, he said adding that in tier II cities, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh, he stated.
Alug said the prominent job profiles that will continue to be in demand experiencing year-on-year surges include sales (18%), business development (17%), chefs (15%), travel consultants (15%), tour operators (15%), travel agents (15%), hoteliers (15%), guides (20%), wildlife experts (12%), and transportation providers (15%), among others.
He said the travel and tourism sector is also undergoing transformation, with many new subsets like destination wedding travel, religious tourism, international tourism, adventure sports tourism, ecotourism, cultural tourism, and rural tourism emerging in the new decade.
Another interesting emergence is that of sustainable tourism which has observed substantial global adoption, with a market value reaching USD 180 billion.
He further stated that companies are adopting the gig model to address talent shortages and meet the growing demand in the sector.
Since January 2023, there has been a 14% increase in gig roles within the travel and tourism sector, encompassing positions such as translators, photographers, and tour guides and this is further expected to increase by 18-20% in the next 2 years, Alug added.&nbsp;

Hotels' Association of India (HAI) on Monday said the hospitality and tourism sector expects to create 50 million direct and indirect jobs in the next 5-7 years but government support is required for getting the full industry and infrastructure status in states to tap the employment potential.
The infrastructure status for the hospitality sector can push up investments not only to create accommodation, but also in the process boost income and employment generation, HAI President Puneet Chhatwal said while speaking here at the 6th HAI Hoteliers' Conclave.
Chhatwal, who is also the Managing Director and CEO of Indian Hotels Company Ltd, said while tourism is a pillar of development creating about 10 per cent of the total employment and contributing 8 per cent to GDP with a huge multiplier effect that can help inclusive growth, "there is often a gap between this realisation and the actual policy implementation".
Addressing a press conference, HAI Vice-President K B Kachru said in the last two years there has been "a rise of 271 per cent in hirings".
"That is how business is moving. Now we need to focus a lot on developing tourism, not only at higher levels but also at entry levels... This focus has to remain and if we don't do that we will not be able to service...
"We are focussing to create over 50 million jobs in the next 5-7 years," Kachru, who is also the Chairman Emeritus and Principal Advisor South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group, said.
Earlier in the day, India's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant had asked the hospitality and tourism sector players to tell politicians about the creation of 25 million jobs by 2030 while seeking their help for the demand of industry and infrastructure status.
He had stated that somehow the tourism industry failed to tell politicians that it is a big creator of jobs, while agreeing with their demand for industry status.
From the tourism sector, Kant had said that Thailand has created close to 20 million jobs, Malaysia about 15 million and India 7.8 million.
Chhatwal said while the government's focus on infrastructure -- such as construction of roads, rails and doubling of airports -- has had a "direct correlation with the success of the sector", granting a full infrastructure status will help it grow further in all aspects.
"We have that status, but there are a lot of limitations that were put into it 12 years ago," he said, adding that the industry status at the state level will also help in making the sector stay competitive.
On the granting of industry status by states, Kachru said while 11 states have done it, there has been a gap in execution.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced its list of Best Tourism Villages 2023.
The accolade recognizes villages that are leading the way in nurturing rural areas and preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values, and culinary traditions and preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values, and culinary traditions.
In this third edition, 54 villages from all regions were selected from almost 260 applications. A further 20 villages have joined the Upgrade Programme, and all 74 villages are now part of the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages Network. The villages were named during the UNWTO General Assembly, taking place this week in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.&nbsp;

Indians are choosing domestic tourist destinations to spend their summer vacation days this year. This is reflected in the soaring demand for hotel rooms across tourist spots in India despite the steep increase in fares.&nbsp;
As per Mint, in the peak season of April to June, the Khyber Himalayan Resort &amp; Spa in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmi has recorded an occupancy rate of 91%, with most days sold out. The resort achieved an average daily room rate of ₹40,000 this summer, surpassing previous records. This surge in demand is unlike anything it has seen over the past decade of its opertaion.&nbsp;
Experts believe that the surge in demand is partly fuelled by the preference among Indians for domestic vacation this year. Soaring international airfares and accommodation costs have also pushed Indians to choose domestic places over international ones.
Demand for local travel and South Asian countries also increased after many faced delays in visa approvals for Europe and other Western countries.&nbsp;
As per Mint, other businesses in the Kashmir valley, such as Skyview by Empyrean at Patnitop in Jammu, saw a 29% increase over last season. Both its tourist ropeway lines and its cottage rooms have reported 95% occupancy in the past two months. It is averaging 14,000 travellers a month on its leisure ropeway project located at a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Katra.
&ldquo;It has been strong from a summer travel perspective, and we advanced the demand with a scheme we ran in March for the season", said Manu Sasidharan &nbsp;the head of hotels and accommodation at Cleartrip to Mint.
The demand for hill stations has seen a 50% to 60% surge in April-June quarter of 2023 compared to the same time period of 2022. This has also resulted in an increase in airfare by 40% to 50% in popular destinations that include Manali, Nainital, Mussoorie, Kashmir, Leh, and Ladakh.

In order to enter the race to attract wealthy global citizens for long-term stays, Indonesia has launched a "second home visa" program that will allow foreigners to stay and work in the country for five to 10 years.

As India assumes G20 presidency in December for a year, the G20 secretariat has identified 55 locations across the country to host over 200 meetings. These locations include Tier-2, Tier-3 cities which are rich in cultural heritage.

From big metros to smaller cities, including those rich in history and scenic beauty such as Hampi and Khajuraho, India has planned to host the G20 meetings at 55 locations across the country during its yearlong Presidency.
Top officials of the tourism ministry have said that the idea behind choosing historic cites, among other places, to host meetings, is to put a "spotlight on heritage sites".
India is expected to host over 200 G20 meetings during its yearlong Presidency of the influential group, which will culminate with an annual summit on September 9 and 10 next year.
"These meetings are planned to be held at 55 locations across the length and breadth of the country spanning various states. We will cover metros, state capitals, important tourist destinations, among other places," a senior official told PTI.
These 55 locations will also include Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities which have picturesque landscape and are rich in cultural heritage, he said.
"So, we are doing a meeting at the Runn of Kutch, one in Siliguri, there will be meetings at Hampi and Khajuraho as well," the official said.
The ruins of Hampi in Karnataka and the group of temples in Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh are among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India. &nbsp;The group of monuments at the Hampi site comprise the remnants of the capital city of the Vijayanagara Empire (14th-16th century AD) mixed with hilly terrain. It is a popular tourist destination among domestic and foreign travellers. &nbsp;The ancient temples at Khajuraho, renowned globally for their exquisite carvings, were built during the Chandela dynasty. Khajuraho is a small town in Chatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh and a favourite among travellers.
Only about 20 temples remain and they fall into three distinct groups and belong to two different religions &ndash; Hinduism and Jainism, according to the UNESCO's website.
When asked if any of the G20 meetings will be held close to heritage sites, the official said, "Meetings would be held in a convention hall or similar facility. But, they (participants) may be taken there for events. So, there may be events or visits to put a spotlight on these heritage sites." The Runn of Kutch in Gujarat's Kutch district is a major tourism attraction and is known for its expansive salt marsh 'White Runn', quaint 'bhunga' structures and glass-embedded Kutchi embroidery. Siliguri is a major tourist city in West Bengal and is famous for tea and timber.
While metros such as Delhi and well-known state capitals will host meetings, smaller cities are also being included to give a more diverse and rich experience to participants, officials said. &nbsp;India will assume the Presidency of the G20 for a year from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023.
Union Tourism Secretary Arvind Singh had recently said that India plans to position itself as a "major tourism destination" during its Presidency of the G20.
He had said this during a national conference of state tourism ministers hosted in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh from September 18-20.
Tourism-related aspects of the G20 leaders' summit were also discussed during the conference organised by the Ministry of Tourism.

While the requirement of a package tour is no longer necessary, tourists have to pay $200 daily as tourism tax in addition to hotel and food charges. 
Visitors from India were not required to pay a tourism tax before Covid-19 but now Indian travellers will be required to pay a  daily levy of Rs 1200. 
The Bhutan govt has said that the Sustainable Development Fee will ensure that their economy recovers from the Covid-19 setback and that they are also able to make tourism sustainable. 
Bhutan is one of the very few carbon-neutral countries in the world.

However, the leaseholder reportedly claimed that the bridge had been "disconnected" to prevent damage. Sudesh Shetty, the leaseholder, told The Indian Express that the locks of the bridge had been disconnected amid strong winds and waves.
Congress, which is in Opposition in Karnataka, used the opportunity to allege corruption by the BJP government. The floating bridge was made at a cost of Rs 80 lakhs by 3 local entrepreneurs.
