Congress launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Centre over the West Bengal train accident, with party leader Rahul Gandhi saying that the tragedy is a result of the Modi administration's mismanagement of the Railways.&nbsp;
In a long post on X, Gandhi, while expressing his condolences, said that the increase in railway accidents in the last 10 years is a direct result of the mismanagement and negligence of the Modi government, which has resulted in the loss of lives and property of passengers on a daily basis.
He said that the opposition will continue to question the government over what he terms as blatant negligence, adding that they will hold the Modi government accountable for these accidents.&nbsp;
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also echoed similar sentiments, saying that they will continue to question the government over the tragedy.
"As a responsible Opposition, it is our bounden duty to underline how the Modi Government has systematically converted the Rail Ministry into a platform of 'Camera-driven' self-promotion," the Congress chief claimed.
"Today's tragedy is yet another reminder of this stark reality," he alleged.
"Make no mistake, we will remain persistent with our questions and shall make the Modi Government accountable for its criminal abandonment of the Indian Railways," Kharge said.

According to a railway official, when the automatic signalling system fails, the station master issues a written authority called TA 912, which authorises the driver to cross all red signals in the section because of the defect.

The automatic signalling system between Ranipatra Railway Station and Chattar Hat Junction in West Bengal, where a goods train hit Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express in the rear, was defective since 5.50 in the morning, according to a railway source.
"Train No 13174 (Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express) departed Rangapani station at 8:27 am and stopped between Ranipatra railway station and Chattar Hat due to automatic signalling failure from 5:50 am," the source told PTI.
According to another railway official, when the automatic signalling system fails, the station master issues a written authority called TA 912, which authorises the driver to cross all red signals in the section because of the defect.
"The station master of Ranipatra had issued TA 912 to Train No 1374 (Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express)," the source said.
He added, "Around the same time, a goods train, GFCJ, departed Rangapani at 8:42 am and hit 13174 in the rear portion resulting from the derailment of the guard's coach, two parcel coaches and a general seating coach."
The Railway Board in its initial statement said that the driver of the goods train violated the signal. It pegged the overall death toll at five. However, some local officials said it could be as high as 15.
Sources said that an investigation alone can establish whether the goods train was also given TA 912 to cross defective signals at speed or if it was the loco pilot, who violated the defective signal norm.
If it is the latter, the driver was supposed to stop the train for one minute at each defective signal and move on with 10 kmph speed.
The loco pilot's body has questioned the Railways' statement that the driver violated the red signal.
"It is highly objectionable to announce the dear loco pilot responsible when he is dead and CRS inquiry pending," Sanjay Pandhi, the working president of the Indian Railway Loco Runningmen Organisation (IRLRO), said.
According to Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Varma Sinha, the collision happened because a goods train disregarded the signal and hit the Kanchanjungha Express, which was on way to Sealdah from Agartala.

Earlier, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a post on X: &ldquo;Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations going on at war footing. Senior officials have reached site.&rdquo; The divisional railway manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway's Katihar division said the 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was bound for Sealdah from Agartala and the accident occurred around 9 am.

Six passengers who suffered injuries in the incident were provided with medical assistance at Central Railway Hospital in Lallaguda, they said.
Immediately, on receipt of the information, a team of Railway officials undertook the relief and restoration operation and cleared the coaches for examination after re-railing the affected coaches, SCR Chief Public Relations Officer Ch Rakesh said in a release.
The affected track was also restored, he said, adding the incident did not impact the regular train movements at the station and trains were operated in a normal manner.
The return journey of the affected train (Train No. 12760 Hyderabad &ndash; Tambaram Charminar Express) also started as per its scheduled time, the SCR official said.
The Commissioner of Railway Safety, South Central Circle will hold a statutory enquiry into the incident, the release added.

According to the sources, the affected coach has been detached from the train and fire tenders have been pressed into service.

Local administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were informed, seeking assistance and ambulances, and accident relief trains have reached the site, the official added.
Expressing shock over the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S jagan Mohan Reddy instructed the officials concerned to undertake rescue operations.
He asked the officials to arrange sufficient number of ambulances to ferry the injured.&nbsp;

Buxar Superintendent of Police Manish Kumar told PTI four passengers had died in the accident. A Railway Police Force official said at least 70 passengers have been injured and shifted to local hospitals. Those with serious injuries were rushed to AIIMS, Patna.
&ldquo;Will find the root cause of derailment,&rdquo; Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on X, even as he expressed condolences for the loss of lives.
The minister said evacuation and rescue operations were completed and all coaches have been checked.
The 23-coach 12506 North East Express had departed the Anand Vihar terminal in Delhi at 7:40 am on Wednesday for its nearly 33-hour journey to Kamakhya, about six kilometres away from Guwahati.
"The train was coming at a normal speed but suddenly we heard a loud sound and a plume of smoke rose out of the train. We rushed to see what happened. We saw that the train had derailed and the AC coaches were the most damaged,&rdquo; Hari Pathak, a local resident said.
Television visuals showed locals rushing to the rescue of the passengers and helping them come out of at least two toppled coaches. The visuals also showed a woman passenger in a state of shock being helped out of a coach by locals.
Several police officials were also seen at the spot helping rescue passengers from the train.
Chief Public Relations Officer of East Central Railway zone Birendra Kumar told PTI that the accident took place less than half an hour after the train left the Buxar station and was headed for Ara.
"The derailment took place near Raghunathpur station where the train does not have a scheduled stoppage," he said.
Relief measures were initiated immediately after the incident, with ambulances and doctors rushing to the site.
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav issued a statement saying that the departments of disaster management and health have been asked to take immediate steps to ensure the quickest possible relief to as many people as possible.
"I have also spoken to the district magistrates of Buxar and Bhojpur (where Ara is headquartered) with instructions to reach the site at the earliest and speed up relief work," he added.
A railways official said alternative arrangements have been made to ferry passengers of the derailed train to their respective destinations.
A scratch rake was dispatched from Patna to ferry passengers from the accident site, the official said. A scratch rake is a temporary rake with a similar configuration as the original train. Six buses too were sent to the accident site to evacuate the passengers to safety.
A railway official said one rake has been arranged from Ara to end the stranded passengers to their onward journeys.
"Medical teams have been sent to the spot," Deepak Kumar, Inspector, Railway Police Force, told reporters, adding that the district administration had alerted local hospitals in Buxar town.
"We have sent rescue and medical teams to the spot. The railways has also issued emergency helpline numbers for passengers. These are 9771449971 (Patna), 8905697493 (Danapur), 8306182542 (Ara), 8306182542 and 7759070004," he said.
War rooms have been established for monitoring and early restoration of the coaches and rescue operations were going on in full swing, a railway official said.
At least 18 trains operating on the route, including the Rajdhani Express between Delhi and Dibrugarh, have been diverted.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who spoke to the media at People&rsquo;s Medical College Hospital in Benazirabad &mdash; the district home to Nawabshah, confirmed the death toll, the Dawn newspaper reported.
He added that the injured could be shifted to Karachi if needed and directed the local administration and health officials to expedite relief and rescue efforts.
Federal Railways Minister Saad Rafiq earlier told the media that the number of casualties could rise as some of the injured were in critical after being hospitalised.

At least nine people were killed and more than 45 injured when 12 coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train derailed in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Thursday.

While four bodies were recovered from the accident site, others&nbsp;died in hospital later. Rescuers searched each coach for survivors and bodies through darkness and thick fog.
There were over 1,000 passengers on board the train at the time of the derailment, officials said, adding those stranded were provided drinking water and snacks.

An elderly woman was severely injured after falling while trying to board a moving train at Vasai Road railway station in Maharashtra's Palghar.
The CCTV footage from the station showed an elderly couple trying to board a moving train. The woman slipped into the gap between the train and the platform.
Her husband then grabbed her hand and saved the woman from being run over by the train. The train stopped after a few second and police staff and people at station pulled the woman on the platform.
The incident occurred around 5.30 pm on Saturday when the woman passenger, Pramila Maro, was travelling by the train from Bhavnagar to Hyderabad along with her husband, Railway police officials said.
