With the BJP-led NDA commanding 49% votes in the electoral college for the presidential election, 64-year-old tribal leader Droupadi Murmu is set for a comfortable victory.

Droupadi Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha, was named the Bharatiya Janata Party led-National Democratic Alliance&rsquo;s (NDA) candidate for the 16th presidential polls scheduled to be held on July 18 consequent to the expiry of the term of current President Ram Nath Kovind.
With the NDA commanding 49% votes in the electoral college for the election, 64-year-old Murmu is set for a comfortable victory.
The woman of many firsts
If elected, Murmu, the former governor of Jharkhand, will be the first tribal woman to be the President of India, and the second woman to occupy the top constitutional post after Pratibha Patil. She was Jharkhand's first female governor and the first Odia woman and tribal leader to be named governor of an Indian state and serve a full term.
Early life
Born on June 20, 1958 in Baidaposi village of Odisha&rsquo;s Mayurbhanj district, Murmu belongs to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) and hails from the Santhal community, one of the most dominant ethnic groups.
Foray into politics
With a Bachelor of Arts degree, Murmu started as a teacher before entering politics in 1997 as the councillor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. The same year, she was declared Vice President of BJP&rsquo;s Scheduled Tribes (ST) Morcha. After being elected as a legislator on a BJP ticket from the Rairangpur constituency in 2000 and 2009, she served as a minister in Commerce and Transport and subsequently Fisheries and Animal Resources department between 2000 and 2004 during the BJD-BJP coalition government in Odisha.&nbsp;
In 2015, Murmu was sworn in as the Governor of Jharkhand.&nbsp;
In 2017, Murmu was seen as a contender for the president&rsquo;s post, when then-President Pranab Mukherjee was set to leave Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Political significance of her possible election
Her win, which looks highly likely, will boost BJP&rsquo;s tribal push in the upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. The four states have 128 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes, of which the BJP had won just 35 in the last assembly elections.
Political significance aside, what her election as President would mean for people hailing from tribal communities and how or if she will project their concerns, only time will tell. Precedents warrant caution from prejudging.

In Madhya Pradesh's Guna district, a tribal woman was allegedly set on fire and the entire ordeal was filmed by villagers on Saturday. The woman, Rampyari Bai and her husband Arjun belong to the Saharia tribe,  that comes under the particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs). 
The couple had approached the police a few days ago claiming threat to their lives as some powerful men of the village wanted to grab their land however no action was initiated. 
On Saturday afternoon, the accused were ploughing the land when she reached and objected to it. That is when, they allegedly set her ablaze. Rampyari was rushed to a hospital in Guna, about 65 kms away. There she was referred to another hospital in Bhopal that is four hours away. 
With 80% of burns, Rampyari is in a critical state fighting for her life. The 38-year-old told doctors that six people of the village poured diesel on her and set her on fire in her own farm. She named the accused as Pratap, Hanumat, Shyam Kirar, Pandit and also two women. Her husband Arjun has said that on his way to the farm he saw Pratap, Hanumat and Shyam Kirar fleeing the spot in a tractor along with their family members. When Arjun arrived at the farm, he saw Rampyari was on fire.
Countering Rampyari's claims, the accused say that she tried to immolate herself and was already in flames when they saw her. A viral video shows a woman on fire in a field and some men are heard saying, 'Let's take a video, she has set herself on fire.' They continue to film even as the woman screams in agony. It is not yet ascertained who filmed the video.
The farm where she was set on fire is claimed by Rampyari's family. According to Arjun, the land was alloted to them under a Chief Minister welfare scheme launched by the Digvijiya Singh government. Disputes over the land were settled by the local administration in Rampyari's family's favour in May.

He told the police that after setting her ablaze they even shot a video and shared it on social media. Countering Rampyari's claims, the accused say that she tried to immolate herself and was already in flames when they saw her.
Guna Superintendent of Police Pankaj Srivastava told local media that an FIR had been registered and two of the three accused had been taken into custody.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh over the incident. 'A party that puts up Droupadi Murmu for the presidential election allows such a terrible atrocity on a tribal woman. Shameful,' he tweeted.
Presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha too condemned the burning saying that this incident shows how shallow the state government's commitment is to tribal welfare.&nbsp;
