West Bengal BJP's Murshidabad unit has announced plans to construct a Ram temple in Berhampore, days after TMC MLA Humayun Kabir proposed to set up a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid at Beldanga in the same district.
The BJP said the temple&rsquo;s construction will begin on January 22, 2025, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. BJP&rsquo;s Berhampore organisational district president, Shakharav Sarkar, said land for the temple has already been identified, and the project is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore.&nbsp;
"We have already identified a land in Beharampore area and the construction work for the Ram Temple based on the design of the temple on Ayodhya will begin soon," he told reporters.
Kabir, the TMC MLA from Beldanga, had on Tuesday announced plans for the mosque, which he said would honour the sentiments of the region&rsquo;s significant minority population.
His remarks have sparked political controversy, with opposition parties accusing him of attempting to polarise communities for political gain.
The BJP&rsquo;s counterproposal to build a Ram temple is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its presence among the Hindu community in Murshidabad, a district where minorities make up around 75 per cent of the population.
Responding to the controversy, the TMC distanced itself from Kabir&rsquo;s remarks, describing them as his personal opinion.
&ldquo;The TMC has nothing to do with this statement of Kabir,&rdquo; a senior party leader said.&nbsp;
Kabir&rsquo;s announcement has also drawn criticism from the Congress, which accused him of playing divisive politics in a sensitive region.

The issue arose when some members of the ruling alliance raised concerns about Banerjee's comments as soon as the House convened. Birla intervened, stating that such remarks were unfortunate and underscoring that personal attacks against any member were inappropriate, especially when directed at women. He emphasized that while disagreements were part of democracy, dignity and respect should always be upheld.
Banerjee&rsquo;s comments were made during Wednesday&rsquo;s discussion on amendments to the Disaster Management Act, where he accused the central government of failing to cooperate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai countered, praising Prime Minister Modi&rsquo;s leadership, while Scindia supported him, highlighting India&rsquo;s global role in aiding other countries during the crisis.
Banerjee's remarks led to a verbal spat and an adjournment. When the House reconvened, Banerjee apologized, but Scindia rejected the apology, stating that while policy debates were welcome, personal attacks on him or on women would not be tolerated. Referring to Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari&rsquo;s assertion that minister Partha Bhowmik will be put behind bars within a month, Roy said the country, since 2014, has been witnessing rampant misuse of central agencies for harassing political leaders.
Bhowmik had moved a privilege motion against Adhikari.
"We have seen how the leader of opposition threatened the members of the state's ruling party, including ministers, with dire consequences," Roy said.

Despite contesting on less than half the seats in Tripura, the Trinamool Congress has tried to make a big impact among the voters.
The campaign has been led by party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, amid claims of being the only party which can oust the BJP from both the state and the Centre.
The TMC appears to have taken a leaf out of the BJP's book, by basing its pitch on the "Bengal model of development". Here's that the TMC is promising in Tripura, to make the most in the 28 seats where it is contesting.
The TMC is saying that it would create 2 lakh new jobs in 5 years, with 50,000 of these in the first year itself. It would give ₹1,000 every month to 1 lakh jobless youth, and also to the 10,000 sacked teachers unless the matter reaches a legal resolution.
To woo the tribal vote, the TMC has promised an additional secretariat in north Tripura for tribal council work.
A main feature of the party manifesto is introduction of schemes already implemented in Bengal. Farmers in Tripura would get ₹10,000 every year. Poor families would get ₹2,000 as funeral assistance. Female heads of households would get income support. ₹25,000 would be given to impoverished families at the time of daughters' weddings.
On the education front, the TMC has promised a ₹1,000 annual scholarship for SC/ST students in classes 4 to 8. The party said it would set up a skill university, and issue student credit cards for easy education loans. Students would also be given bicycles.
Startup incubators would be set up in all 8 districts of the state.

According to the ED, TMC leader Gokhale had said that Alankar Sawai paid him ₹23.54 lakh in cash for "social media work and other consultancy".
On being asked as to why Sawai had paid him in cash, Gokhale stated that only Sawai can answer this question, the ED told the court in its remand paper.
"Further, on being asked regarding any written agreement with Alankar Sawai in respect of social media work he stated that it was only verbal agreement with Alankar Sawai," the agency said.
The ED alleged that these cash deposits were received by Gokhale when he was a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Sawai is understood to have been questioned about these instances and his statement was recorded under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Official sources said the questioning and confronting of the two has not helped them unearth the fund trail as stated by Gokhale even as Sawai purportedly denied making any cash payments.

Kolkata Police registered an FIR against state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and 10 journalists for claiming that the second incident of stone-throwing on Vande Bharat Express took place in West Bengal giving the state a bad name, an officer said on Monday.
The incident had happened in Bihar when the Howrah-New Jalpaiguri semi-high-speed train was passing through that state on January 3.

Claiming that 99 per cent of the people of West Bengal were covered by state government schemes, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched a new mass outreach campaign of Trinamool Congress to check if people get benefits from the projects.
Under the "Didir Suraksha Kavach" (Didi&rsquo;s Protective Shield) initiative, around 3.5 lakh volunteers of the ruling Trinamool Congress will reach out to approximately 10 crore people of the state in 60 days starting January 11.
The party also launched a mobile app, &lsquo;Didir Doot&rsquo; (Didi&rsquo;s messenger), to record feedback from beneficiaries of the projects ahead of the panchayat polls due this year.
"We have covered around 99 per cent of the people through our welfare schemes. &lsquo;Duare Sarkar&rsquo; has resolved many of the existing issues. The government will do its job, but some complaints have also been received at the party level,&rdquo; Banerjee told a press conference here.

&lsquo;Duare Sarkar&rsquo; is an initiative of the state government for delivery of specific schemes at the doorsteps of the people.
This "Didir Suraksha Kavach" initiative will help leaders connect with the people and hear their problems, she said.
"There is a possibility that some family members may not know how to apply. Our workers will assist them," she said.
The TMC boss, however, asserted that the campaign was not planned with an eye on the panchayat election but the Opposition parties criticised Banerjee over the new outreach programme, claiming that the ruling party is trying to fool people ahead of the panchayat polls.

The prime accused in the arson and violence in Bengal's Bogtui village, which had in March claimed at least 10 lives, was found hanging on Monday in a temporary office of the CBI, a source in the central agency said.
Lalan Sheikh, arrested earlier this month from a hideout along the Bengal-Jharkhand border, died by hanging himself with a 'gamcha' (thin cotton towel) in the washroom of the office that the agency has set up in a guest house in Rampurhat area of Birbhu, district, the source said.
His family members, however, alleged that his "death resulted from the torture" that he was subjected to in CBI custody.

Talking to PTI, the CBI source said, "Sheikh was found hanging in the washroom of the guest house, where we have set up our temporary camp, around 4.30 pm. The two investigating officers (IOs) of the case were in the court at that time.
"One CRPF constable was outside the washroom, but the accused, despite his presence, managed to die by suicide. We have informed the police and the National Human Rights Commission of India about the incident. All necessary procedures are being followed," the source said.
The accused, following his arrest, was initially remanded in CBI custody for six days, and it was later extended by three more days, the CBI source said.
Claiming that Sheikh was "severely beaten up" in CBI custody, family members of Sheikh have sought a probe into the matter.
"My brother was brought to our village a few days ago (as part of the probe) and he told us that CBI officers had been beating him up in custody. He was scared of dying. We want action against the CBI officers who are responsible for my brother's death," Sheikh&rsquo;s elder sister told reporters.
A senior police officer of Birbhum district, when contacted, said a probe will soon be initiated.
"The reason behind the death is still unclear. We were informed by the CBI about the death around 4.40 pm. We will look into the case," he told PTI.
Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, taunting opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, sought to know if this was the "big revelation" that he was talking about.
Adhikari had last week asked people to "wait and see what happens on December 12, 14 and 21", refusing to divulge further details.
"Suvendu had been saying that he will reveal something big on December 12. Is this the big thing he was talking about? Today an important person in the investigation died in CBI custody. There are many skilled officers in CBI. Why did it happen? Was the accused killed?" Ghosh said.
BJP leader Rahul Sinha also demanded a neutral investigation into the case.
"There must be an investigation. We want to know if there was any conspiracy involved to protect a bigger culprit behind the Bogtui massacre," Sinha told PTI.
CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty, too, demanded an answer from the CBI over the custodial death.
"The CBI took nine months to arrest the prime accused, and now he died in its custody. The CBI is answerable for this. There must be a judicial probe into the death. Is it a truly a suicide or a murder?" Chakraborty told PTI.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) I investigation into Birbhum violence that claimed eight lives earlier this week.
The court directed an SIT formed by the West Bengal government to hand over case papers and accused persons arrested by it to the central probe agency.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice R Bharadwaj directed the CBI to file a progress report by April 7, the next date of hearing of the matter.
The bench said that the CBI probe was being ordered in the interest of justice.
Eight people, including two children, were charred to death in Bogtui village of Bengal’s Birbhum district in the suspected fallout of a TMC panachayat official’s murder.
The bench had suo motu taken up the case of the gruesome incident.

The Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI investigation into Birbhum violence that claimed eight lives earlier this week.
The court directed an SIT formed by the West Bengal government to hand over case papers and persons arrested to the central probe agency.
The court directed the CBI&nbsp;to file a progress report by April 7.
The bench said that the CBI probe was being ordered in the interest of justice.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)&nbsp;I investigation into Birbhum violence that claimed eight lives earlier this week.
The court directed an SIT formed by the West Bengal government to hand over case papers and accused persons arrested by it to the central probe agency.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice R Bharadwaj directed the&nbsp;CBI&nbsp;to file a progress report by April 7, the next date of hearing of the matter.
The bench said that the CBI probe was being ordered in the interest of justice.
Eight people, including two children, were charred to death in Bogtui village of Bengal&rsquo;s Birbhum district in the suspected fallout of a TMC panachayat official&rsquo;s murder.
The bench had suo motu taken up the case of the gruesome incident.
A set of PILs seeking CBI or NIA probe into the incident were also taken up for hearing by the court along with the suo motu petition. PTI AMR RMS RMS

The Kolkata High Court has taken suo moto cognizance of the Bhirbhum violence. The matter will be heard by a two-judge bench of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj. 
The incident left eight, including two children, dead in a suspected fallout of the murder of a ruling TMC panchayat official.
A forensic team is going to examine the burnt houses to find out the 'nature of the mishap'.
The West Bengal government has set up an Special Investigation Team to look into the matter. 
Delegations from other parties, including the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Bharatiya Janata Party, is set to visit the area of violence as well. 
At least 20 have been arrested in the matter so far.

The Kolkata High Court has taken suo moto cognizance, after violence in West Bengal's Birbhum district, left eight, including two children, dead.

A forensic team will examine nearly a dozen burnt houses, to find out the 'nature of the mishap'.

The West Bengal government has also set up a SIT to probe the matter. CM Mamata Banerjee, was quoted saying that while she was not justifying the killings, such incidents are more frequent in UP, Gujarat, MP and Rajasthan.

A 9-member delegation of BJP MPs including the party's national vice president Dilip Ghosh, along with others are visiting the venue, apart from a CPIM delegation. The Union home ministry has sought a detailed report from the state government.

In what could spell fresh trouble for Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, sitting MLA from Mongolkot in East Burdwan district, Siddiqullah Chowdhury, one of the key faces behind the Nandigram anti-land acquisition movement, has decided not to contest from his own constituency in the upcoming assembly polls.
A News18 report said&nbsp;Chowdhury has expressed displeasure over the &ldquo;indifferent behaviour&rdquo;, &ldquo;unorganised functioning of the district leadership&rdquo; and &ldquo;lack of courtesy&rdquo;.
Quoting Chowdhury, the report said, he has informed about the poor leadership at the district level to Mamata Banerjee as well. Chowdhury reportedly said he is a &ldquo;bhumiputra&rdquo; of Burdwan and cannot be a mute spectator if the district lags behind on the path of development due to poor leadership.

After the highway face-off with the Mamata govt over the movement of bodies of its workers, the BJP-TMC war is set to hit the streets of the state. The BJP is observing a strike in Basirhat, where 3 of its workers were killed in post-poll violence and a statewide Black Day. The saffron party will also hold a rally to Lalbazar, the police headquarters, on June 12. Workers from the two parties had come to blows over the removal of party flags from public places. A Trinamool worker was shot and then hacked to death. Two BJP workers were killed - one of them shot through the eye.

Responding to the Centres advisory after 4 people died in political clashes, West Bengal govt has said that situation was under control in the state. State Chief Secretary Malay Kumar De wrote that there have been a few stray post-poll clashes in the state perpetrated by some anti-social elements, and that the law enforcement authorities have been taking firm and appropriate actions in all such cases
