Meta confirmed the contribution, which is designated for the expenses related to the presidential inauguration.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has been working to repair ties with Trump. Although Zuckerberg did not publicly endorse a candidate in the 2024 election, he took steps toward reconciliation, including a Thanksgiving Eve dinner with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
This follows a period of tension, especially after Trump&rsquo;s removal from Facebook and Instagram in 2021 for his praise of those involved in the Capitol riots.
Trump had previously warned Zuckerberg in August that he would face severe consequences if he interfered with the 2024 election. However, Meta reinstated Trump&rsquo;s accounts on both platforms in January 2023.

US President-elect Donald Trump said Monday he intends to impose sweeping tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China, prompting a swift warning from Beijing that "no one will win a trade war."
In a series of posts to his Truth Social account, Trump vowed to hit some of the United States' largest trading partners with duties on all goods entering the country.
"On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25 percent tariff on ALL products coming into the United States," he wrote.
In another post, Trump said he would also be slapping China with a 10 percent tariff, "above any additional Tariffs," in response to what he said was its failure to tackle fentanyl smuggling.
Tariffs are a key part of Trump's economic agenda, with the Republican vowing wide-ranging duties on allies and adversaries alike while he was on the campaign trail.
Both China and Canada issued swift responses, each calling their trade relationships with the United States "mutually beneficial."
"No one will win a trade war," Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for China's embassy in the United States, told AFP by email, defending Beijing's efforts to curb fentanyl smuggling.
"China believes that China-US economic and trade cooperation is mutually beneficial in nature," Liu added.
Canada said it was "essential" to US energy supplies, and insisted the relationship benefits American workers.
"We will of course continue to discuss these issues with the incoming administration," said the statement from Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Trump's first term in the White House was marked by an aggressive and protectionist trade agenda that also targeted China, Mexico and Canada, as well as Europe.
While in the White House, Trump launched an all-out trade war with China, imposing significant tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese goods.
At the time he cited unfair trade practices, intellectual property theft, and the trade deficit as justifications.
China responded with retaliatory tariffs on American products, particularly affecting US farmers.
The US, Mexico and Canada are tied to a three-decade-old free trade agreement, now called the USMCA, that was renegotiated under Trump after he complained that the US businesses, especially automakers, were losing out.

The incident left an attendee dead and two others critically injured, Within minutes of the attack, pictures and videos of Trump being attacked went viral. Along with this, conspiracy theories too made its way on the internet.&nbsp;
The word that was trending on X after the assassination attempt was 'Staged'. Well, this very word has become synonymous with conspiracy theories on social media. It is often used to cast doubts on shooting or attacks.&nbsp;
The conspiracy theories began with questions like 'How did the attacker made its way to the roof? Why were they not stopped?'&nbsp;
Soon after this, people started calling the attack staged without any evidence. Some of the social media users said the attack looked staged. One of the internet users wrote on X, "No way they missed with that many shots and just nicked his ear? And then the fist pump and all the pictures of him with the flag. This is propaganda."
While another user said that it looks like a paintball attack.&nbsp; A user also said, "it sounded like a BB gun".
Yet another internet users said that the picture where Trump was showing his fist after the attack was 'too damn perfect' and described how they got the flag position perfect and everything. The user's take on the attack went viral but it was later deleted.&nbsp;
Other than conspiracy theories, incorrect attempts to identify the shooter also went viral and other people's reputations were being ruined. Later on, the FBI named the gunman as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was shot and killed by the Secret Service. &nbsp;

Donald Trump abruptly walks out of his defamation trial

Trump, who was not required to attend the civil lawsuit proceedings, had appeared agitated all morning, vigorously shaking his head as Kaplan's closing arguments got underway.

Former President Donald Trump abruptly walked out on closing arguments at his defamation trial Friday as a lawyer for writer E Jean Carroll urged a jury to award her client at least USD 12 million damages, saying Trump had shattered her reputation and her world by unleashing a flood of hate toward her through his public statements branding her a liar.
Just minutes after attorney Roberta Kaplan began her closing argument in Manhattan federal court, Trump suddenly rose from his seat at the defense table and walked toward the exit, pausing to scan the packed courtroom as members of the Secret Service leaped up to follow him out.
The unexpected departure prompted Judge Lewis A Kaplan to speak up, briefly interrupting the closing argument to say: &ldquo;The record will reflect that Mr Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom.&rdquo; The walkout came only minutes after the judge, without the jury present, threatened to send Trump attorney Alina Habba to jail for continuing to talk when he told her she was finished.
&ldquo;You are on the verge of spending some time in the lockup. Now sit down,&rdquo; the judge told Habba, who immediately complied.
Roberta Kaplan and the judge are unrelated.

Lawyers were summing up for nine jurors who will start deliberating later in the day whether Carroll, a longtime advice columnist, is entitled to more than the USD 5 million she was awarded in a separate trial last year.
The final remarks from the lawyers come a day after Trump managed to sneak past a federal judge's rules severely limiting what he could say during his turn on the witness stand, which wound up lasting just 3 minutes.
&ldquo;She said something that I considered to be a false accusation,&rdquo; Trump said, later adding: &ldquo;I just wanted to defend myself, my family and, frankly, the presidency.&rdquo; The jury was told by the judge to disregard both remarks.
A different jury last May concluded that Trump sexually abused Carroll in the spring of 1996 in the changing room of a luxury Manhattan department store. It also found that he defamed her in 2022 by claiming she made up the allegation to sell a memoir.
Trump, the Republican frontrunner in this year's presidential election, has long regretted his decision not to testify at that trial, blaming his lawyers for bad advice.
During her closing, Roberta Kaplan told jurors that the current case was not about a sexual assault.
&ldquo;We had that case,&rdquo; she said, referencing the first trial. &ldquo;That's why Donald Trump's testimony was so short yesterday. He doesn't get a do-over this time.&rdquo; The jury in this new trial has been told that it is there for the limited purpose and jurors must accept the verdict reached last year. The current jury will only determine whether additional damages are owed for statements Trump made in June 2019 while he was president. The claims had been delayed for years by court appeals.
Carroll's lawyers seek over USD 10 million in compensatory and punitive damages. Habba has argued against damages, saying Carroll's association with Trump had given her the fame she craved and that death threats she received cannot be blamed on Trump's remarks.
Carroll, 80, testified at last year's trial that she had a chance encounter with Trump at a Bergdorf Goodman store that was flirtatious and lighthearted until Trump cornered her in a changing room. Her claim that Trump raped her was rejected by last year's jury, though it agreed she was sexually abused.
Last week, Carroll testified that her career was shattered by Trump's statements about her claims over the last five years, most recently on the campaign trail for president. She said she bought bullets for a gun she inherited from her father and installed an electronic fence around her home.
On Thursday, Trump testified that he stood &ldquo;100 per cent" behind comments he made in an October 2002 deposition in which he denied Carroll's accusations, calling her &ldquo;sick&rdquo; and a &ldquo;whack job.&rdquo; Kaplan intends to instruct jurors Friday that the jury last year concluded that Trump had digitally penetrated Carroll in the department store, but the same jury did not find that he had raped her, according to how rape is defined under New York state law.
The Associated Press typically does not name people who say they have been sexually assaulted unless they come forward publicly, as Carroll has done.

His presence on the stand was a vivid reminder of the legal troubles he faces as he vies to reclaim the White House in 2024.

It also functioned as a campaign platform for the former president and leading Republican presidential candidate to raise anew to supporters his claims of political persecution at the hands of government lawyers and judges.
&ldquo;People are sick and tired of what's happening. I think it is a very sad day for America," Trump told reporters outside the courtroom after roughly three-and-a-half hours on the stand.
But its allegations of financial impropriety cut to the very heart of the brand he spent decades crafting. Engoron has already ruled that Trump committed fraud by inflating his financial statements, putting the ex-president's future control of Trump Tower and his other marquee properties into question.
The non-jury trial addresses other claims in the lawsuit brought by James against Trump, his company and top executives, including his eldest sons. She wants the defendants to fork over what she claims is more than USD 300 million in ill-gotten gains and to be banned from doing business in New York.
The civil trial is one of numerous legal proceedings facing Trump as he runs for a second term, including federal and state charges accusing him of crimes including illegally hoarding classified documents and scheming to overturn the 2020 presidential election. His legal and political strategies have now become completely intertwined as he hopscotches between campaign events and court hearings, a schedule that will only intensify once his criminal trials begin.
Trump has been particularly engaged in his fraud trial, aggrieved by the suggestion that he's worth less than he's claimed.
&ldquo;I'm worth billions of dollars more than the financial statements,&rdquo; he said Monday on the stand, telling a state lawyer, &ldquo;You go around and try and demean me and try and hurt me, probably for political reasons.&rdquo; His testimony got off to a contentious start, with the judge turning to Trump's attorney at one point and saying: &ldquo;I beseech you to control him if you can. If you can't, I will.&rdquo; The courtroom at 60 Centre Street had already become a familiar destination for Trump, who spent days over the past month voluntarily seated at the defense table, observing the proceedings. He took the stand once before &mdash; unexpectedly and briefly &mdash; after he was accused of violating a partial gag order. He denied violating the rules, but Engoron disagreed and fined him anyway.
His turn as a witness gave him the biggest opportunity yet to respond to allegations against him.
Summoned by lawyers for the state, Trump repeatedly bristled at the suggestion that he had ever intended to defraud financial institutions. He said he had been misquoted or taken too literally in past public comments about his business dealings and his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, and said disclaimers in his financial statements covered any missteps. He returned to a familiar position that no one had been victimized, though state lawyers contend that Trump was able to get lower interest rates and other benefits because of the wealth reflected on his financial statements.
&ldquo;Not one bank lost money. Not one insurance company lost money," he declared.
Tensions between Engoron and Trump &mdash; already on display in recent weeks, when the judge fined him a total of USD 15,000 for incendiary outside-of-court comments &mdash; were evident early on Monday when the ex-president was repeatedly scolded about the length and content of his answers.
Engoron, who determined in a ruling earlier that Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame, will decide the non-jury case. He cautioned at one point that he was prepared to draw &ldquo;negative inferences&rdquo; against the former president if he failed to rein in his answers.
&ldquo;I do not want to hear everything this witness has to say. He has a lot to say that has nothing to do with the case or the questions," the judge said.
Despite the testy back-and-forth early in the day, Trump was later able to veer into expansive answers without anyone cutting him off, using the opportunity to rail against James, the judge and the proceedings in general.
&ldquo;I think that she's a political hack, and I think she used this case to try and become governor, and she used it successfully to become attorney general. I think it's a disgrace that this case is going on," Trump said.

Of Engoron, Trump said, &ldquo;He ruled against me, and he said I was a fraud before he knew anything about me.&rdquo; James, who was in the courtroom, stared straight ahead at Trump as he spoke and was seen chuckling when Trump suggested she didn't know anything about one of his properties, which is located across the street from her office. Afterwards, she told reporters: &ldquo;He rambled. He hurled insults. But we expected that.&rdquo; Monday's testimony centered on the core of the allegations by the state attorney general: that Trump and his company intentionally inflated property values and deceived banks and insurers in the pursuit of business deals and loans.
Echoing the stance taken by two of his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric, in their own testimony last week, Trump sought to downplay his direct involvement in preparing and assessing financial statements that the attorney general claims were grossly inflated and fraudulent.
&ldquo;All I did was authorise and tell people to give whatever is necessary for the accountants to do the statements,&rdquo; he said. As for the results, &ldquo;I would look at them, I would see them and maybe on some occasions, I would have some suggestions.&rdquo; He also played down the significance of the statements, which went to banks and others to secure financing and deals.
&ldquo;Banks didn't find them very relevant, and they had a disclaimer clause -- you would call it a worthless statement clause,&rdquo; he said, insisting that after decades in real estate, &ldquo;I probably know banks as well as anybody. &hellip; I know what they look at. They look at the deal, they look at the location." He complained that his 2014 financial statements shouldn't be a subject of the lawsuit at all.
&ldquo;First of all it's so long ago, it's well beyond the statute of limitations,&rdquo; Trump said before turning on Engoron, saying he allowed state lawyers to pursue claims involving such years-old documents &ldquo;because he always rules against me.&rdquo; Engoron said, &ldquo;You can attack me in whichever way you want, but please answer the questions.&rdquo;

Trump told his supporters that he was subjected to one witch hunt after another as there was an attempt to stop him from Presidential re-run.

Former President Donald Trump blasted his historic federal indictment as &ldquo;ridiculous&rdquo; and &ldquo;baseless" on Saturday during his first public appearances since the charges were unsealed, painting the 37 felony counts as an attack on his supporters as he tried to turn dire legal peril to political advantage and project a sense of normalcy.
Speaking at Republican state conventions in Georgia and North Carolina, Trump cast his indictment by the Department of Justice as an attempt to damage his chances of returning to the White House as he campaigns for a second term.
&ldquo;They've launched one witch hunt after another to try and stop our movement, to thwart the will of the American people,&rdquo; Trump alleged in Georgia, later telling the crowd that, "In the end, they're not coming after me. They're coming after you.&rdquo; The strategy is a well-worn one for Trump, who remains the front-runner for the 2024 GOP nomination despite his mounting legal woes, which also include criminal charges filed against him in March in New York.
Again and again, in the face of investigation, Trump has tried to delegitimise law enforcement officials and portray himself &mdash; and his supporters &mdash; as victims, even when he is accused of serious crimes.
Trump also vowed Saturday to remain in the race, even if he is convicted in the case.
&ldquo;I'll never leave,&rdquo; he told Politico in an interview aboard his plane after his speech in Georgia. He further predicted that he wouldn't be convicted and sidestepped questions about whether he would pardon himself if he wins a second term.
&ldquo;I don't think I'll ever have to,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;I didn't do anything wrong.&rdquo; The indictment unsealed Friday charges Trump with willfully defying Justice Department demands that he return classified documents, enlisting aides in his efforts to hide the records and even telling his lawyers that he wanted to defy a subpoena for the materials stored at his residence.
The indictment includes allegations that he stored documents in a ballroom and bathroom at his Mar-a-Lago resort, among other places.
Trump is due to make his first federal court appearance Tuesday in Miami. He was charged alongside valet Walt Nauta, a personal aide whom prosecutors say moved boxes from a storage room to Trump's residence for him to review and later lied to investigators about the movement. Nauta traveled with Trump on Saturday, appearing by his side at a Georgia Waffle House stop where the former president signed autographs, posed for photos and told supporters, &ldquo;We did absolutely nothing wrong.&rdquo; Earlier Saturday, Trump was given a hero's welcome at the party convention in Georgia, where he drew loud applause as he slammed the investigation as &ldquo;a political hit job&rdquo; and accused his political enemies of launching &ldquo;one hoax and witch hunt after another&rdquo; to prevent his reelection.
&ldquo;The ridiculous and baseless indictment by the Biden administration's weaponized Department of Injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country," he said.
He also used his remarks to rail against President Joe Biden and his 2016 Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, accusing them of mishandling classified information and insisting he was treated unfairly because he is a Republican.
But Trump overlooked a critical difference: Only he has been accused of intentionally trying to impede investigators by not returning the documents in question.
In the Clinton probe, for instance, FBI investigators concluded that although she was extremely careless in her handling of classified emails on a private server, there was no evidence that she intended to break the law. And though the Biden investigation is still ongoing, no evidence has emerged to suggest that he intentionally held onto the records or even knew that they were there, with his representatives turning over records after they were discovered and voluntarily consenting to FBI searches.
Trump also lingered on Georgia's role in his 2020 defeat, repeating his lies that he had won the state and defending his efforts to overturn Biden's victory, which is the subject of another ongoing investigation, this one by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Willis has suggested that any indictments would likely come in August.
At the heart of the investigation is a recorded phone conversation in which Trump urges Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to &ldquo;find 11,780 votes&rdquo; &mdash; just enough to overtake Biden and overturn Trump's narrow loss in the state. Trump has defended the phone call as &ldquo;perfect," and on Saturday lashed out against both Willis and the special counsel in the Mar-a-Lago case.
But aside from reacting to the news, Trump's remarks in both states largely mirrored his pre-indictment rally speeches, lending a sense of normalcy to a campaign that is well-practiced in responding to crisis.
And despite the latest criminal charges, attendees cheered him on in Georgia and in North Carolina, where he spoke at a state GOP convention dinner Saturday evening.
About 100 supporters, some waving &ldquo;Witch Hunt&rdquo; signs, showed up to the Columbus, Georgia, airfield to greet Trump as he arrived. Jan Plemmons, 66, wearing an oversize foam &ldquo;Make America Great Again&rdquo; hat, called the federal charges &ldquo;absolutely ridiculous&rdquo; and said she was ready to campaign with Trump. To Michael Sellers, 67, it was &ldquo;criminal what they're doing to him." The indictment arrives as Trump is continuing to dominate the primary race. Among the various investigations Trump has faced, the documents case has long been considered the most perilous legal threat and the one most ripe for prosecution. But Trump's continued popularity among Republican voters is evident in how gingerly his primary rivals have treated the federal indictment.
Mike Pence, whose appearance in North Carolina marked the first shared venue with his former boss since the ex-vice president announced his own campaign this past week, condemned the &ldquo;politicization&rdquo; of the Justice Department and urged Attorney General Merrick Garland "to stop hiding behind the special counsel and stand before the American people&rdquo; to explain the basis for the federal investigation into Trump.
In an interview with The Associated Press after his speech, Pence said he had read the indictment but repeatedly declined to share his personal reaction to its contents &mdash; including the photographs of boxes with classified information stacked in a Mar-a-Lago bathroom and on a ballroom stage &mdash; or to criticize Trump.
&ldquo;The very nature of a grand jury is that there is no defense presented,&rdquo; Pence said. &ldquo;That's why I said today I'm going to urge patience, encourage people to be prayerful for the former president, but also for all those in authority and for the country going forward.&rdquo; At the North Carolina GOP gathering Friday night, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Trump's leading GOP rival, didn't mention Trump by name but compared his situation to that of Clinton.
&ldquo;Is there a different standard for a Democratic secretary of state versus a former Republican president?&rdquo; DeSantis asked. &ldquo;I think there needs to be one standard of justice in this country. ... At the end of the day, we will once and for all end the weaponization of government under my administration.&rdquo; Among the declared Republican contenders, only Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson has explicitly called for Trump to end his candidacy. Hutchinson told reporters in Georgia that the Republican Party &ldquo;should not lose its soul&rdquo; in defending Trump and said the evidence so far suggested that the former president treated national secrets &ldquo;like entertainment tools.&rdquo;

Trump's attorney, Christina Bobb, who was present at Mar-a-Lago when the agents conducted the search, signed two property receipts — one that was two pages long and another that is a single page.
In a statement earlier Friday, Trump claimed that the documents seized by agents were "all declassified," and argued that he would have turned them over if the Justice Department had asked.
While incumbent presidents generally have the power to declassify information, that authority lapses as soon as they leave office and it was not clear if the documents in question have ever been declassified.
And even an incumbent's powers to declassify may be limited regarding secrets dealing with nuclear weapons programs, covert operations and operatives, and some data shared with allies.
Trump kept possession of the documents despite multiple requests from agencies, including the National Archives, to turn over presidential records in accordance with federal law.
The Mar-a-Lago search warrant served Monday was part of an ongoing Justice Department investigation into the discovery of classified White House records recovered from Trump's home earlier this year.
The Archives had asked the department to investigate after saying 15 boxes of records it retrieved from the estate included classified records.
It remains unclear whether the Justice Department moved forward with the warrant simply as a means to retrieve the records or as part of a wider criminal investigation.
Multiple federal laws govern the handling of classified information, with both criminal and civil penalties, as well as presidential records.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, the same judge who signed off on the search warrant, unsealed the warrant and property receipt Friday at the request of the Justice Department after Attorney General Merrick Garland declared there was "substantial public interest in this matter," and Trump said he backed the warrant's "immediate" release.
The Justice Department told the judge Friday afternoon that Trump's lawyers did not object to the proposal to make it public.
In messages posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, "Not only will I not oppose the release of documents ... I am going a step further by ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents."
The Justice Department's request was striking because such warrants traditionally remain sealed during a pending investigation.
But the department appeared to recognize that its silence since the search had created a vacuum for bitter verbal attacks by Trump and his allies, and felt that the public was entitled to the FBI's side about what prompted Monday's action at the former president's home.
"The public's clear and powerful interest in understanding what occurred under these circumstances weighs heavily in favor of unsealing," said a motion filed in federal court in Florida on Thursday.
The information was released as Trump prepares for another run for the White House. During his 2016 campaign, he pointed frequently to an FBI investigation into his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, over whether she mishandled classified information.
To obtain a search warrant, federal authorities must prove to a judge that probable cause exists to believe that a crime was committed. Garland said he personally approved the warrant, a decision he said the department did not take lightly given that standard practice where possible is to select less intrusive tactics than a search of one's home.
In this case, according to a person familiar with the matter, there was substantial engagement with Trump and his representatives prior to the search warrant, including a subpoena for records and a visit to Mar-a-Lago a couple of months ago by FBI and Justice Department officials to assess how the documents were stored. The person was not authorized to discuss the matter by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.
FBI and Justice Department policy cautions against discussing ongoing investigations, both to protect the integrity of the inquiries and to avoid unfairly maligning someone who is being scrutinized but winds up ultimately not being charged.
That's especially true in the case of search warrants, where supporting court papers are routinely kept secret as the investigation proceeds.
In this case, though, Garland cited the fact that Trump himself had provided the first public confirmation of the FBI search, "as is his right."
The Justice Department, in its new filing, also said that disclosing information about it now would not harm the court's functions.
The Justice Department under Garland has been leery of public statements about politically charged investigations, or of confirming to what extent it might be investigating Trump as part of a broader probe into the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Reinhart, the same judge who signed off on the search warrant, unsealed the warrant and property receipt Friday at the request of the Justice Department after Attorney General Merrick Garland declared there was "substantial public interest in this matter," and Trump said he backed the warrant's "immediate" release.
The Justice Department told the judge Friday afternoon that Trump's lawyers did not object to the proposal to make it public.
In messages posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, "Not only will I not oppose the release of documents ... I am going a step further by ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents."
The Justice Department's request was striking because such warrants traditionally remain sealed during a pending investigation.

But the department appeared to recognize that its silence since the search had created a vacuum for bitter verbal attacks by Trump and his allies, and felt that the public was entitled to the FBI's side about what prompted Monday's action at the former president's home.
"The public's clear and powerful interest in understanding what occurred under these circumstances weighs heavily in favor of unsealing," said a motion filed in federal court in Florida on Thursday.
The information was released as Trump prepares for another run for the White House. During his 2016 campaign, he pointed frequently to an FBI investigation into his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, over whether she mishandled classified information.
To obtain a search warrant, federal authorities must prove to a judge that probable cause exists to believe that a crime was committed. Garland said he personally approved the warrant, a decision he said the department did not take lightly given that standard practice where possible is to select less intrusive tactics than a search of one's home.
In this case, according to a person familiar with the matter, there was substantial engagement with Trump and his representatives prior to the search warrant, including a subpoena for records and a visit to Mar-a-Lago a couple of months ago by FBI and Justice Department officials to assess how the documents were stored. The person was not authorized to discuss the matter by name and spoke on condition of anonymity.
FBI and Justice Department policy cautions against discussing ongoing investigations, both to protect the integrity of the inquiries and to avoid unfairly maligning someone who is being scrutinized but winds up ultimately not being charged.
That's especially true in the case of search warrants, where supporting court papers are routinely kept secret as the investigation proceeds.
In this case, though, Garland cited the fact that Trump himself had provided the first public confirmation of the FBI search, "as is his right."
The Justice Department, in its new filing, also said that disclosing information about it now would not harm the court's functions.
The Justice Department under Garland has been leery of public statements about politically charged investigations, or of confirming to what extent it might be investigating Trump as part of a broader probe into the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol and efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

The annual White House press corps gala returned Saturday night along with the roasting of Washington, the journalists who cover it and the man at the helm: President Joe Biden.
The White House Correspondents' Association dinner, which the pandemic sidelined in 2020 and 2021, returned with Biden as the first president in six years to accept an invitation. Donald Trump shunned the event while in office.
“Just imagine if my predecessor came to this dinner this year,” Biden told an audience of 2,600, among them journalists, government officials and celebrities. “Now that would really have been a real coup.” The president took the opportunity to make light of the criticism he has faced in his 18 months in office and take aim at his predecessor, the Republican Party and the members of the press.
“I'm really excited to be here tonight with the only group of Americans with a lower approval rating than I have," Biden said.
The night was filled with taped comedic skits including late-night TV hosts, comedians and even Biden himself.
The dinner had its serious moments, too, with tributes to pioneer journalists of colour, aspiring student reporters, and a tribute to the journalist detained, injured or killed during their coverage of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier in the night, in a return to some normalcy, journalists, government officials and celebrities paraded down the red carpet even as the threat of COVID-19 loomed over the massive hotel ballroom.
Comedy was back with “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah as the headliner following BIden. Celebrities were reappearing as well: Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson walked the carpet as did Brooke Shields and Caitlyn Jenner. The event drew a large swath of government officials and other prominent figures.
