Kanhaiya was allegedly murdered for supporting suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her comments on Muhammad, a historical figure considered a Prophet by Muslims.

Nearly 6 months after tailor Kanhaiya Lal was hacked to death in Rajasthan's Udaipur while the crime was recorded on camera, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet in the case on 22 December 2022.
The NIA named 9 persons who are residents of Udaipur, and 2 individuals named Salman and Abu Ibrahim, who are residents of Pakistan's Karachi.
Kanhaiya was allegedly murdered on 28 June 2022 for supporting suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her comments on Muhammad, a historical figure considered a Prophet by Muslims.
The accused persons have reportedly been charged under sections 120B, 449, 302, 307, 324, 153(A), 153(B), 295(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Sections 16, 18 and 20 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Section 4/25 (1B)(b) of Arms Act.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Hawa Singh Ghumaria said an First information report (FIR) against the deceased was registered on June 11 for sharing a controversial post on social media and he was arrested.
On June 15, while he was on bail, he told police that he was receiving threat calls. The local SHO summoned him, the complainant and some people from both the communities to the police station and settled the matter, he said.
After the murder, ASI Bhanwar Lal posted at Dhan Mandi police station has been suspended for negligence at that time, Inspector General of Police, Udaipur, Hinglaj Dan said.
It is alleged that the ASI did not pay heed to the concern raised by Kanhaiya Lal regarding the threat calls that he was receiving, he said.
The ADG said that those who had come to mediate are also being interrogated.

The NIA is looking into the role of "local self-radicalised" groups and other linkages of the two prime accused in the brutal killing of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli, officials said on Thursday.
The NIA said the two wanted to "strike terror among the masses across the country" through the gruesome act. 
Officials said the agency is looking into the role of "local self-radicalised gangs" and their possible international linkages even as preliminary probe suggests that more people could be involved in the conspiracy to murder Teli.
The NIA officials said the two became members of Pakistan-based Sunni Islamic organisation Dawat-e-Islami via a mobile application and one of them was in touch with some people in Pakistan. They, however, said it was too early to draw conclusions yet.
A team of around 10 NIA personnel, led by an inspector general-rank officer, is camping in Udaipur to take the probe forward.
The Karachi-based Dawat-e-Islami website says it is a "global non-political Islamic organisation working for the propagation of the Quran and Sunnah throughout the globe" and that it was established in 1981.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot visited the tailor’s family and told reporters that he wanted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to file the charge sheet in a fast-track court as soon as possible, so that the culprits are brought to justice.

One of the two prime accused in the brutal killing of a tailor in Udaipur has links with the Pakistan-based organisation Dawat-e-Islami and had visited Karachi in 2014, the Rajasthan Police chief said on Wednesday.
The police have detained three more people in connection with the killing so far, Director General of Police (DGP) M L Lather said at a press conference here.
Two men, identified as Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, allegedly hacked Kanhaiya Lal to death with a cleaver at his shop in Udaipur on Tuesday and posted videos online saying they are avenging an insult to Islam.
The duo was taken into custody on Tuesday and booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the various sections of IPC, the police chief said.
"One of the accused, Ghouse Mohammad, has links with the Karachi-based Ismalist organisation Dawat-e-Islami. He had visited Karachi in 2014. So far, we have detained five people, including the two prime accused," Lather said.
When asked whether both the accused had links with Dawat-e-Islami, Lather said that it cannot be ruled out as both of them were equally involved.
Lather said that looking into all the perspectives and on directions of the chief minister, it was considered as act of terror, so investigation was started after registering a case under the UAPA.
A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrived in Udaipur, he said, adding the case has been transferred to the NIA and state police will assist them.
Lather said Ghouse Mohammad in 2014 had visited Dawat-e-Islami, Karachi. The outfit has its offices in Mumbai and Delhi, he said. Detained accused Riaz works as a welder and Ghouse is into some petty works. “It is also found that the distinct weapon used to hack Kanhaiya was made by Riaz around four-five years ago,” said the DGP.
On the trans-border connection of the two prime accused, he said all digital evidence is being looked into.
A case has been lodged under IPC sections 302, 452, 153 (A), 153(B), 295(A) and 34, and sections 16, 18 and 20 of UAPA, 1967.
Lather also mentioned about the case lodged against Kanhaiya Lal on June 10 by one Nazim at Dhan Mandi police station over an alleged objectionable post hurting sentiments of a community. On June 11, Kanhaiya was arrested and released on bail the next day, he said.
On June 15, Kanhaiya filed a complaint at the police station that four-five people were following him and his life was in danger.
The SHO failed to assess the gravity of the situation and effective action was not taken on the Kanhaiya’s complaint, the state police chief said, adding the issue was resolved amicably without any legal action.
“The assistant sub-inspector was suspended yesterday, and today the SHO has been suspended for negligence,” he said.

A Special CBI Court in Rajasthan&rsquo;s Jodhpur district has ordered the registration of a criminal case against former Union minister Arun Shourie in relation to the sale of a luxury hotel in Rajasthan in 2002 during the Vajpayee govt. The court rejected a closure report filed by the CBI in the matter of the sale of Laxmi Vilas Palace Hotel in Udaipur. It said that Shourie, who was disinvestment minister in 2002 and retired IAS officer Pradip Baijal abused their positions to cause a loss of 244 crore to the govt in the sale of the hotel. The court has also ordered a case against hotelier Jyotsna Suri. The hotel which was valued ay 250 crores was sold for just 7.5 crores.
