Fintech firm InCred has turned unicorn after raising USD 60 million in a funding round from new and existing investors.
Following the fresh capital infusion, InCred has been valued at USD 1.04 billion and has become the second company to gain unicorn status this year, the company said in a statement.
The Series D round was led by Ranjan Pai of MEMG, who invested USD 9 million followed by Ravi Pillai, Chairman at RP Group of Companies, and Ram Nayak, Global Co-Head of the Investment Bank and Head of Fixed Income &amp; Currencies at Deutsche Bank, who invested USD 5.4 million and USD 1.2 million, respectively.
The fundraise also saw participation from several large ultra-high-net worth individuals and Family Offices, as well as institutional investors like Varanium Capital Advisors and Sattva Group, it said.
"This funding marks a significant milestone in our journey and takes us into the ranks of Unicorns. We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support our investors have shown.
"This equity capital will help us take advantage of these opportunities, strengthen our balance sheet and provide us enough runway for the next couple of years of expansion," InCred CEO Bhupinder Singh said.
The equity capital of Rs 500 crores will be strategically deployed across InCred's core business verticals: Consumer Loans, Student Loans, and MSME Lending, all three of which have seen strong growth, it said.

The funding, which makes InCred the second startup to join the unicorn club in 2023 after Zepto, involved participation from global private equity funds, corporate treasuries, family offices, and high-net-worth individuals.
<h3>Post-Merger Success</h3>
This development follows InCred's merger with KKR's local non-banking finance arm 16 months ago. The company, led by founder and group CEO Bhupinder Singh, plans to utilize the capital in its core business areas such as consumer loans, student loans, and MSME lending. 
<h3>IPO Vision</h3>
InCred, established in 2016 as a tech-enabled lending platform, manages a loan book of ₹7,500 crore and aspires to be integral to every Indian family's financial goals. The company envisions a future IPO to unlock substantial value for its shareholders.
Notable investors in InCred include Investcorp, Oaks Asset Management, Moore Capital, Elevar Equity, Ranjan Pai of the Manipal Group, and Gaurav Dalmia, the founding chairman of Landmark Holdings (Dalmia Group). There are 147 startups in India that have the potential to become unicorns in the next 5 years. This is as per the ASK Private Wealth Hurun India Future Unicorn Index.&nbsp; Out of about 122 startups in India that Hurun listed as likely to enter the country's unicorn club last year, it has dropped about 19 of them this year. However, 48 new additions have been made as well.&nbsp;
This comes at a time when the startup ecosystem is experiencing a funding winter and rising cases of corporate governance lapses. Currently, there are 83 unicorns in India, 51 gazelles and 96 cheetahs as per the index. This compares to 84 unicorns, 51 gazelles and 71 cheetahs last year.&nbsp;
Hurun Research Institute defines unicorns as startups that are founded after 2000, with a valuation of $1 billion, gazelles as startups that are most likely to become unicorns in the next three years, and cheetahs as startups that could become unicorns in the next five years. ASK Private Wealth's chief executive and managing director Rajesh Saluja said unsustainable business models adopted by startups have led to a dip in valuations but stressed that funding to the right companies continues. &ldquo;The slowdown in the economy has been tough for certain companies, with almost 20 percent of last year&rsquo;s gazelles and cheetahs either dropping off the list or being downgraded. Hurun Research believes these companies could no longer become unicorns within three years. Rising interest rates and geopolitical headwinds have combined to make it harder for startups to raise capital,&rdquo; says Anas Rahman Junaid, Hurun India founder and chief researcher. Junaid, however, said that the Indian startup story has high potential and he sees the overall number of unicorns in India touching 200 in the next five years.
Saluja said recent troubles on the governance front in some startups like Byjus will not impact funding to the broader Indian startup ecosystem and pointed to high interest among high networth individuals to invest in funds, which will be deployed in startups.

Around 18% of India's unicorn startups are founded or co-founded by women and 20 other firms are in pipeline to become unicorn, a joint study said on Tuesday.
The study conducted by TiE Delhi NCR, research firm Zinnov, Google, NetApp and venture capital firm Indian Angel Network found that despite comparable metrics, success, and high entrepreneurial intent, socio-cultural barriers hinder women founders' growth.
"Approximately 18% of India's total unicorns are founded by women, with 20 Potential Unicorns in the pipeline," the study said.
The startups that are in the pipeline to become unicorns include WinZO, Doubtnut, Infinity Learn, Locus, Pratilipi, Portea, SirionLabs, etc.
Women founded or co-founded start-ups that have already become unicorns include acko, BYJU's Pristyn Care, MyGlamm, MobiKwik, Open etc.
The total valuation of unicorn built by women founders stands at over $30 billion and total equity investments raised by them is over $12 billion.
The study, however, found a huge gender disparity in the Indian start-up ecosystem.
"Disparity in ticket size caused women founders to face an investment loss of about&nbsp; $3.7 billion over the past 3 years," the study said.
According to the study, from an investor's perspective, women founders come across as more cautious compared to their male counterparts, which lowers deal size offers to them.
"Women founders face more scrutiny on their commitment compared to their male counterparts which makes negotiations more challenging from their point of view," the study said.&nbsp;

According to Financial Express, the job cuts are an attempt to cut costs at the subsidiary, Impartus Innovations, which was bought for Rs 150 crore in a cash and stock deal.
A Tracxn report has estimated that 7,000-8,000 employees have been fired by edtech start-ups in this period, including, BYJU&rsquo;S, Toppr, WhiteHat Jr, Unacademy, Vedantu, Practically. Several players like Lido Learning, Udayy, Crejo.Fun, SuperLearn, etc., have also wound up operations due to continuing capital crunch and shifting consumer preferences.&nbsp; UpGrad has been founded by Ronnie Screwvala, Mayank Kumar and Phalgun Kompalli. The Edtech has managed raised over $600 million from Temasek, Bharti Enterprises and Bodhi Tree, among others, and is currently valued at around $2.2 billion.&nbsp;

Zomato-backed logistics technology platform Shiprocket has become the latest entrant to the country&rsquo;s unicorn club after raising $32 billion&nbsp; in a funding round which valued the company at over $1.2 billion. Shiprocket joins peers Delhivery, Xpressbees, and BlackBuck in the unicorn clique.&nbsp; The fresh funding round led was by Light Rock India and as per the startup&rsquo;s regulatory filing, Singapore&rsquo;s sovereign fund Temasek, Bertelsmann, Moore Strategic Ventures, Paypal, March Capital, and Huddle also participated.
The fresh funding comes at a time when the company has been on an acquisition spree. The startup has acquired five firms over the last one year.&nbsp;

India&rsquo;s largest home services marketplace Urban Company is facing serious charges of exploitation as over 100 women employees&nbsp;protested outside the office of the unicorn start-up in Gurugram&nbsp;demanding better wages.&nbsp;
The allegations against Urban Company&nbsp; The complaints came to light as social media got flooded with videos with beauticians alleging that Urban Company has hiked thecommissions it charges from them to over 30%, reducing their salaries significantly.&nbsp;

Home service marketplace Urban Company on Sunday denied allegations levelled by its women beautician partners of providing very low commission to them and claimed that the earnings are far more than the amount claimed by them.
But the company a blogpost on Sunday acknowledged that it is &ldquo;not perfect&rdquo; and might have made mistakes in its journey. The company said that it will be announcing important programmes to enhance earnings of partners in the coming weeks

The exchange has 3.5 million users and has more than doubled its user base in the last two months. The platform was founded in&nbsp;2018 by&nbsp;Sumit Gupta &amp;&nbsp;Neeraj Khandelwal.

Online payment startup, BharatPe&nbsp;has become India's latest unicorn club&nbsp;after it raised $370 million in a fresh funding round led by Tiger Global Management, taking its total valuation to $2.85 billion.&nbsp;
The company in its statement said&nbsp;Dragoneer Investor Group and Steadfast Capital also participated in the new round, which brings the startup&rsquo;s to-date raise to over $580 million against equity.

Foodtech unicorn&nbsp;Swiggy&nbsp;has elevated long-time employee Phani Kishan Addepalli as its co-founder, company chief executive Harsha Majety told employees in an internal communication to the startup's employees on Monday.&nbsp;
